Went with friends for NY day lunch in the main restaurant. What a disappointment. Waiter was terrible. barely anyone there and yet we had to ask for service so we could order a drink when we got there. Never even acknowledged us even though he was waiting on table next to us. Brought champagne, poured, then never returned to pour again, so we had to get up and do it. Had to catch him to order and ask busboy about another bottle of wine. Brings wine and has to go find glasses. Pours wine then, again, disappears. Brings burgers and sandwiches with fries with no ketchup or mustard. Brings another bottle of wine with no fresh glasses. That bottle, and two others, were corked ( not their fault but should have comped a bottle to apologize.) finally gave up. To begin Valentine Day's weekend, my husband and I decided to order the Afternoon Tea for Two for pickup. What an absolutely delightful experience- kudos to the the chefs!! It was such fun to unpack our bag- beautifully presented in pink boxes and well packed containers. The presentation was so well done. Each savory sandwich was unique and delicious. And the sweets- oh my! Again each one was a beautiful explosion of flavors and textures. Each bite led to a new and pleasurable taste. We made reservations three months in advance to enjoy afternoon tea in the English Room on May 13th. I was looking forward to a relaxing experience. It was anything but that! We were seated next to a table of 3 couples with 2 very loud little girls that were yelling and running around almost the entire time. We had the same waiter and he brought them coloring sheets and crayons in hopes that they would stay seated. The parents ordered 4 bottles of champagne while we were there and seems oblivious to the noise level. As we were leaving, we noticed a man with a name tag and asked if we could speak with him. Erik Zelenka addressed us with, "What do you want?" He was arrogant and rude and interrupted us as we were speaking, so I called to speak with the Hotel Manager. I was informed that Mr. Zelenka was the Food Services Manager and that the hotel was run by a corporation and that there was no one above him to speak with. The woman I spoke with took the time to listen and offered a refund. This is not the kind of service one would expect from the Deer Path Inn and we will not be back! read more

I have been coming to the Deer Path Inn for many years with friends and family but after our experience this weekend, I can confidently say I will never be returning. As other commenters have mentioned, management has no shame in discriminating against customers they don't see fit the Lake Forest stereotype. I work for many families in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and Lincolnshire, and am truly shocked with the amount of couples who have had similar experiences. I wish I realized this sooner and am ashamed to have ever given them business in the past. I WISH I could give 5 stars. I got married here and everything was absolutely beautiful. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. But the $400 suite we spent the night in was horrendous. There was clearly some sort of dust or mold infestation in the bedroom area. Within about 5 minutes of laying down on the bed I began to have difficulty breathing. Within about an hour laying in the bed was no longer a viable option if I wanted to get air. I spent the first night married to my husband sitting on a couch in the sitting room. When my husband woke up in the morning he had sore throat and felt congested. Within the about 45 minutes of leaving, we both felt fine. It was very clearly something in the room. When I told the front desk the issue in the morning they told me they'd "look into it". Bottom line: come here for a meal, but don't spend the night. read more

I'vehad a horrible experience customer service wise with The English Room and Deer Path Inn. I called in end of January to make a reservation for afternoon tea for two for March to celebrate my 40th birthday. I realized the date I reserved I had a conflict with so I called shortly to reschedule the date. The person I talked to said no problem they had a opening two weeks later on March 16th and I said perfect I'll take it. I received a text confirmation for my original reservation date which I thought was odd. Which makes me think my reservation might not have been changed. I called The English Room, three times and left three messages..... No reply to any of my messages. I called the front desk of the Deer Path Inn today and they told me perhaps my messages were inaudible or maybe my voicemail was full..... neither are true. The person today took my name and phone number and told me they would call me back with further information on my reservation. Surprise, surprise never heard anything back. I'm incredibly disappointed. I just wanted to have a high tea for two to celebrate my birthday and instead I'm dealing with the worst customer service ever. read more

I went to Deer Path with eight women for the "High Tea" and we had the best time. The started us off with a complimentary glass of champagne, which was such a great touch. Everything from the food to the tea was so well done. Our server was very well versed on all of the tea options and was able to give us some really great suggestions. At the end of the meal, they even gave us a sample of our tea to take home. This hotel itself does not miss a detail, everything is beautifully decorated, and the service was impeccable. If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would. I have been a regular for years and consistently order sushi through their takeout service. The karai tuna roll which I paid 20 dollars for, was made from tuna that went bad. I ate one piece and instantly felt sick. The roll also smelled bad. I had to throw the roll in the trash as I could not eat spoilt fish. I paid over 120 dollars for my entire food order. When I called, I was told to leave a message with staff, which I did. I never got a response. I called again and was told to leave a voicemail for the manager, which I did. I never got a response. I called twice more and left messages without getting a callback. The fifth time I called, I was directed towards the manager of food for the restaurant and hotel. I left a voicemail. He called me back and proceeded to talk down to me on the phone, questioning why I didn't call sooner and also questioning what I meant by the tuna going bad. I explained that it tasted and smelled foul/spoilt, unlike when I have had the same exact roll on many occasions in the past. I said I would like to be refunded for the roll (20 dollars). I explained I called several times but no one returned my call. He took my number and said he would talk to the chef and call me back. He never called me back. I have no respect for restaurants that charge 20 dollars for sushi that is not fresh. Serving sushi that has gone bad is a violation of food & safety standards for restaurants. I am still awaiting the refund for the sushi roll. read more

Went to the Pub for lunch - last one before my Mum flew home to England. We live locally and thought it Would be fun to show her how Lake Forest does a British pub. Genuinely wished I hadn't bothered. Firstly I had to send the scotch egg back - the pork wasn't pink - it was slushy it was that raw. The replacement was fine - noticeably thinner layer of meat and less herbs. Mains: fish and chips and Cornish pasties. Pasties were ok. I can't compare to an English one as they can't be compared but this was good enough. The fish and chips were awful One portion of fish tasted 'off' One portion of the fries was cold. The other tasted of bleach or some other cleaning agent I didn't bother to complain - we were on our way to O'Hare. I have eaten in many many restaurants from Michelin star to greasy cafes in many different countries. This experience was not good at all. I can't see us returning. I came here to celebrate my birthday brunch with about 9 of my girlfriends and overall we had a fantastic time. The place has been renovated and our table was very nice in the main room downstairs. I would have liked to sit in the sun room next time as it looks beautiful but then again it's further from all the goodies. The service was top notch here. They really take care of you from the moment you sit down from when you leave to get your car from valet. The Sunday buffet brunch is $48 plus tax tip per person and there's almost everything you could think of. They had tons of meat, salads, sushi, lox, bagels and pastries, bottomless shrimp, fish, seriously the works. I mean there's definitely something here for everyone and everything was very good quality. When I wanted cream cheese on my bagel, one of the guys made it happen and brought it over without charging us extra for it. The mimosas were outstanding, it truly felt nice here. Our glasses were never even half full as refills kept on coming. The quality of the food was also superb but seriously come here starving as there is so much to eat and drink that you will get super full. The dessert table is also wonderful filled with chocolate covered strawberries, creme brulee, pecan pie, macaroons, the question should be what they didn't have. The only thing I wish they did was have an omelette station where you can choose your eggs how you want them as they only had eggs Benedict which I'm not the biggest fan of. The Deerpath Inn is a shining star for the town of Lake Forest. My son was married at the inn and we were also guests there. The service, the food, accommodations, and event planning and support were fabulous. The inn and the staff met our every need without delay. The event planners, Mary Ellen and Ashley, were phenomenal. They communicated efficiently and in a very timely manner, an aspect of service that is important to me. I couldn't believe how many staff people helped after the wedding party to collect any essential items and store them for us until the next day. Throughout the wedding service and party, attention was paid to the comfort of the bride and groom. They really appreciated this. The wedding meal was beautifully plated and quite delicious. Many of our wedding guests commented on how much they enjoyed the dinner. The appetizing breakfast in their wonderful dining room was nice as well. I really enjoy food that is freshly made. The accommodations are beautiful! The staff worked hard to ensure we were satisfied and their turn-down service at night and their free valet service were also added treats. This review is only based on my experience at the buffet that they serve inside the hotel. I generally dislike buffet style brunch or dinner, unless I am eating at one of the finer hotels in Vegas. However, it was Mothers day and my mom wanted to have brunch, so I had to give in. We called on Thursday and made last minute reservations for 8 people without any problems. They said that we were the last table and they probably weren't kidding because it was packed. The only reason I can't give this a 5 star rating is because it is soooo pricey. It was about $50/person, which in my opinion is way too much for a buffet. Anyway, if you want to eat high-end, classy buffet style food, then def come here. They have everything from bagels, eggs, meat, to sushi and shrimp. I am a huge sushi fanatic, so for me, sushi wasn't the BEST. Shrimp, however, was AMAZING. Service was good, but nothing too crazy since we serve ourselves for the most part. The actual hotel is BEAUTIFUL - it has a antique feel to it. This is a place I would keep in mind for a big party. We walked around to their garden after-wards where they also have seating and it was so gorgeous. If I ever have to go back to a brunch, especially in a hotel, this will be my number one choice because the food is just outstanding. read more

I used to love staying at the Deer Path Inn when I was working/staying in the Deerfield area years ago. Usually I'd stay in one of the chain hotels that were close to the office, but on the occasions where they were all booked up, the Deer Path Inn was a great alternative although a little bit of a drive. I've probably stayed here about a half dozen times and it was always a treat -- a great departure from the usual suburban dime-a-dozen chain hotel. The Deer Path Inn is right in central Lake Forest in a quiet neighborhood. Although I've never experienced it myself, I'd always heard stories about how the cops in North Shore towns will keep an especially close eye on you if you show up in a car with out of state plates. Just something to keep in mind. The decor of the place was really cool -- kind of like something you'd find in the English countryside. The main dining area looked very elegant, but I only ever ate downstairs at the pub -- very inviting and comfortable with great food. The rooms were quiet and elegantly decorated. Room service was also available and cable TV was included. In short, despite the decidedly unique 'old world' feel of the place, all of the amenities for the business traveler were available. I was only at the Deer Path Inn during the workweek, so I can't comment on the qualitiy of the accomodations or events on weekends. I've often thought over the years about returning to Deer Path Inn for one more visit just for old times' sake -- if it's anything like I remember, it ought to be a great time. read more

Enjoyed lunch in the English Room (Garden Room) today for the first time since the completion of the renovations. Absolutely stunning. Romantic, even at 12:00 in the afternoon. Food and service was impeccable (ordered French Onion Soup, Lobster Bisque, and two Chicken Clubs -- Chocolate Marquise for dessert). Relaxing, welcoming atmosphere staffed by professionals. An absolutely delightful experience all the way around and one we will repeat over and over! Deer Path Inn and its staff has made it impossible to go anywhere else. P.S. I had one of the most impeccable service experiences while staying at DPI for my 10 year anniversary. Unexpectedly and unprompted they pulled out all the stops. We were upgraded (to a larger room) and the staff sent an in room complimentary snack cart featuring chips and dips, charcuterie plate and hard sodas. We were blown away! We had the opportunity to try the Carry Out Tea from the Deer Path Inn. What a fun experience! We ordered in advance and paid, so there would be a safe, no contact experience. When we arrived at the appointed time, we gave our name to the doorman and he brought our tea. When we got home, we found our food to be. packaged perfectly: One container for the sandwiches, one for the sweets including a scone and one for the jam, lemon curd and clotted cream. The tea was in little tin containers and quite a nice blend. Besides looking perfect, all the food was delicious. I thought there was a chance, since it was take-out, the sandwich bread might be dry, but it was as fresh as if we were eating at the restaurant in the hotel. I can't tell you how pleased everyone was at our wonderful, socially distanced holiday tea. Oh how I love the Deer Path Inn...perfect for cocktails, lunching, and whatnotting. My favorite spot is the Pub, the space is small, cozy, the drinks are strong. I frequent the Pub every time I'm in Lake Forest. The food is alright...a bit greasy for my tastes, but hot damn, every now and then fries are necessary. The rooms are cozy as well! They are quite small compared to other hotels in the surrounding area, but this is the best spot if staying in Lake Forest...close to all of the local boutiques. The floral decor could be updated...but hey, what do you expect from a historic hotel? I've also been here for holiday meals...Easter, Thanksgiving...always fabulous presentation and fab service...especially if grandparents are in attendance. Went there with family to celebrate my mom's birthday. It's an old style dining room in an inn that is a historic landmark. Pleasant, somewhat sedate atmosphere. I had a wonderful seafood risotto that was loaded with shrimp and lobster. The menu has a wide variety of choices, poultry, steak, seafood, even pizza and sushi. My brother and I split a spicy tuna roll and it was pretty good. Enjoyed a great lobster bisque as well. We ordered a bottle of Riesling for the table, but they were out of it, so the waiter countered with a Pinot Gris. Turned out to be a decent recommendation, though at $45, it was a little more than what the Riesling would have been. Setup my "about-to-be" in-laws at the Deerpath Inn last week and they had a great stay. With my family all being in LF, there are not a lot of other options, so I'm glad that this worked out. I did not want my in-laws to stay out by the tollway. Anyway, they enjoyed the pub and breakfast area in the dining room a lot. They said the water in the showers was either blazing hot or freezing cold, but it is an older hotel, so things like that can be expected. I had a nice talk with the desk attendent when we checked in and he was very helpful. Will use the Deerpath Inn for future stays and always enjoy their pub. read more

My wife and I were in town for a reunion and stayed for two nights. I realize this is a historic hotel but in this case "historic" means "no updates" Our room was musty and the decor was tired and worn out - sort of like your grandparents house when they were no longer able to keep it up. I went to plug in my laptop and discovered the only three prong outlet was in the bathroom. The lamps had the old school wires, sort of made me think twice before plugging my phone charger into the same socket. We had a discounted rate of $249 - normal price would have been $350 which is ridiculous. I travel frequently for business, this place charges more than the W in many cities. Old school hotel reminds me of some places I've stayed in northern Germany. Lots of exposed wood and wall paper. If you are used to staying at the Marriott this will be a new experience for you. This is my third time here. The first two I was here for only a night in a single room. It was nice. This time I'm here for three days in a suite. Lots more room and I have six closets! Don't know what I'll do with those. There's a free breakfast with coffee, juice, toast and fruit in the dining room. The Pub is the bar, with Chimay on tap. Nice! The food is fine, runs from bar food to sushi to that favorite of prior generations Dover Sole (whatever that is). Free underground parking and conveniently located in downtown Lake Forest.
