I took a bike to Deerfield Cyclery this past week and instructed them to replace and re-cable a broken rear derailleur gear shifter. Nothing more. The sales assistant noticed and asked about the front tire that was flat, and I specifically told him NOT to fix it because I would do that myself. Either he or someone else added that to the repair order anyway without contacting me for approval. When I noticed that the flat tire had been fixed I told the assistant when I picked up the bike today that I did not request or authorize that. His response was that it was on the work order, and a lame apology. I'm an avid, highly knowledgeable cyclist who's worked in Sales And Customer Service for over thirty years, AND a former bike shop employee myself, AND I've been buying and selling quality pre-owned bicycles as a hobby for over twenty years. The only reason I didn't attempt the shifter replacement myself is because I currently don't have a repair stand. I HAD become a regular customer of Deerfield Cyclery AND recommended them to my own bike customers, but that ended today. I will no longer literally drive right past three other bike shops in the immediate area to do business with them. read more

I brought my bike in to change my rear wheel tire. I rode my bike twice after I picked it up from the shop and discovered that my rear wheel tire was not tightly applied and almost fell off my bike while riding. I appreciate that the repair was done quickly, but I would've preferred that they took their time and did the repair properly. read more

Great small business. I went with my mom for a pair of spin shoes. They had a great selection for on and off the bike. The staff members knew exactly what shoes would be best for what my mom was looking for, so our trip was short and sweet, and my mom left happy with a great pair of shoes. We even brought our puppy, and though I don't think either employee actually enjoyed her, they were friendly which is perfectly fine with me! read more

I recently purchase bikes for my kids. I purchased a Trek for my son from Deerfield Cyclery, and a Specialized for my daughter from another bike shop. I will say that my experience with Deerfield Cyclery has been poor in comparison with the other shop. Both bikes came with a free adjustment. In the case of the other shop, I dropped the bike off on a Saturday and picked it up an hour later. With Deerfield Cyclery, I was told by the kid at the counter that they did not do weekend tune ups and that I would have to leave the bike and pick it up the following week. Finally, I have found the staff at Deerfield Cyclery to be inexperienced and not very helpful. I would recommend that you select another shop where the owner is present on the weekend to answer your questions and repair your bike. read more

My bike is not special, plan old diamondback. It needed a spoke replaced, the front derailer tuned and a bottom bracket replaced. It cost $90 but the bike has never been better. Since I like the bike it was money well spent. Very nice people. read more

In Deerfield it feels like the cult of this store is a right of passage into the community. I went here with my daughter who is a very timid rider and the staff could not be bothered to be helpful or even nice to her. The employee who was helping us was almost snobby as to the inferiority of all other options. The recommend bike wasn't girly enough so she wanted another option to that the staff was very cold and said we may want to go look at other places. read more

My husband and I were in the area visiting so we decided to check this place out. The shop owner, Greg was there and all I can say is "WOW"! He is so knowledgable and so helpful. My husband rides a lot but, because I'm a beginner, I don't know much about parts etc. Greg really took the time to explain things to me and helped me understand exactly what I needed to be doing in order to become a better rider. If 6 stars were possible, I'd give it to Deerfield Cyclery. When purchasing my first road bike, their focus was on listening to my objectives and skill level. Then they matched the perfect bike for me. A Giant Defy 2. They didn't try to up-sell which another store tried to do (a turn off). On the contrary, it was bike to rider fit first. As my road cycling passion grew, they helped with selecting a trainer. I would ask Greg for cycling DVDs to help develop during the off season. He would ask for my objectives and a week later the best fitting spinning DVD would arrive. After I slightly damaging l my bike, Greg gave great advice on waiting to fix the cosmetic problem (broken shifter cover) until the upgrade components I desired were on sale. The cost wouldn't be that much different and would get a better riding experience. Nice: A shop owner forgoing the quick sell in favor of a down the road better value for the customer. I've been buying and repairing my bike at Deerfield Cyclery since I was a kid! The owner, Greg, is very friendly and is always willing to take time out of his busy day to help everyone in the store. I've also been pleasantly surprised each time I visit the store by how well Greg has done with the hiring of his younger staff members. I feel comfortable asking any bicycle questions to every staff member at the store and the prices are always competitive with the big stores that offer no service to you at all! Had my cross bike fixed there in the Spring. not a cheap tune-up, did not fix the issue i brought the bike for (repeat flat), as i had a flat tire on my next ride, did not check the wear on the shifting cable as these broke on the trainer a week after. while the first issue was understandably hard to diagnose (rim tape), i am puzzled as to why a simple check of the shifting cable wear is not included in a $300 tune-up. read more

I've been frequenting Deerfield Cyclery since I moved up to this area in 2009, and have always found the store and service superlative. I purchased a road bike from the owner Greg back in 2010 and he did a fantastic job of making sure I was not only fitted properly to the bike, but happy with every aspect of the purchase. He went out of his way to ensure my previous road bike was adjusted so as to maximize the fit on that bike as well, and put a new stem on it; which greatly improved my cycling position and comfort. My bike was way overdue for a good tune-up, so I took it downtown to Kozy's, so find out how much it would cost me. The mechanic looked at it, and said the bike needed a new chain, a new cable, a new cassette, and a few other things. The total cost would be about $240. I thanked him, and took it back to Deerfield Cyclery, which is right around where I live. I asked them how much would it cost to get it in good shape, and they told me that it just needed the annual tune-up, which costs $89. I asked them- "Are you sure it doesn't need a new chain, or any other parts?", and they said "Nope, it just needs a good tune-up". So I left it with them, and I just picked it up, a week later. The bike looks just like new- they thoroughly cleaned all the parts, oiled up everything, and the bike is riding as smoothly as when I first bought it. I highly recommend this place- they performed an excellent service on my bike, without trying to sell me additional parts and things that were not necessary. As a regular consumer of bikes, bike equipment and maintenance I cover both ends of the spectrum from serious road riding to purchasing training wheels for my daughter's bike. What sets Deerfield Cyclery apart from other shops is the service it provides to their customers. We have had excellent assistance in purchasing new sets of wheels for our kids. Definitely not the best place I have been to. I dropped off my bike for a complete check up, since I have not had lots of time to use it and was going to start using it to commute to work. Everything in the beginning was OK, i mean I just asked for a complete check up and got an estimate of when it will be done. So no big deal. The people I talked to were nice and all, but the quality of the work was not as good as I expected. They did replace some things and fix some minor issues I had with the the bike. But for $150 i expected them to at least adjust my derailleurs so the chain does not rub and make sure all the bolts were tightened. First ride around after I got home I shifted through all me gears and saw that my chain was rubbing. That's not a big issue, I can fine tune that stuff myself. The problem was that whoever inspected my wheels, did not tighten the quick release on the front tire and when I hopped a curb the front wheel rolled out from the frame and I nearly wiped out in the middle of the street. If the road was busy I would have gotten flatten. If I had test rode it in front of their store I would definitely not be alive to write this review. read more

I'm not sure how Deerfield Cyclery has received negative reviews. I met the owner (Greg) when he came to our corporate office to educate on biking. Since that meeting, I've been to his shop 3 times and without question have found Greg and his team to be THE most educated of all cycle shops that I've visited (and I've seen many). His team is wonderfully educated about bikes and spends the time to make sure you buy a bike that is suited to your needs. Once purchased Greg performs a 30 minute bike fitting that ensures that all adjustments are fit to your body. The service level is outstanding, as is the technical advice. I've driven by Deerfield Cyclery many times and never ever thought to stop in. Now that I have, I will never buy a bike from another shop. There is no question in my mind that you will not receive better service than with Greg and his team. I would highly recommend visiting. read more

I am not sure why all the good reviews of this place are hidden, but I am glad I took a second look at the filtered reviews. I was looking for bikes for the whole family for Christmas. I work in Deerfield so I decided to try the cyclery first. I was greeted by Steve the manager and was shown some really great bikes. Although they would have to special order 2 of the 4 I needed they assured me they would be able to get them in a few days. I felt like I was treated well but decided to check out a few other stores. Went to garner and it was a waste of time. The employee was pushy and kept trying to steer me towards an in stock bike. Also kept telling me that I can't return a bike no matter what. I also had a less than pleasing experience at M&M cyclery. I went back to Deerfield cyclery and placed my order. They came through for me. Just need nice weather and we can enjoy a family bike ride.
