This a local business and I love to support local businesses. I decided to get my really old road bike looked at hoping that it would just need air in tires and a tune-up. I walked in and was greeted right away. The staff is really friendly! She did an initial evaluation and then had others take a look. Well it needed more than a tune-up. The tires were shot, the gears were not switching. They gave me a list of things and I declined somethings but got the rest. I turned it in but it was busy they said and it would take 2 weeks. They would text me when ready. 2 weeks later, I did not receive a text. A week later, they called and informed me that they missed an issue at check-in and that it would take another week or so as they had to place an order. It is a good thing I have a mountain bike to train with! I received a text and went to go pick it up a couple weeks later as I just didn't have the time. When I picked up the bike, I wish they would have given me a refresher on all the things they fixed (one by one) but I could have also asked. I've ridden the bike and it is good as new. Overall, they did a good job on fixing the bike, Maybe a better checkout process and intake process so they don't miss anything. read more

Mike's Bike Shop... what can I say but probably the best choice I've made in awhile. I bought my stepson a new bicycle for Christmas. I made two mistakes that I have learned from. First I bought his new bicycle on Amazon without him to measure (luckily it was perfect size). Then I did not want to admit to him that I did exactly know how to assemble a bicycle, but I'd "give it a try". I was able to get it 95% of the way there but I just didn't feel it was safe yet. I called Mike's bike shop because of a referral from a friend. Matthew said he would be more than happy to have the service department look it over and do a safety check. I went in to drop it of and met a really nice guy named Michael, who you could tell knew what he was talking about and liked what her does. He took notes of all my silly worries about loose screw here, missed a washer over here, can't get the seat right, etc. he assured me they would check everything and make sure my kid was safe as far as equipment goes. I asked him a few more questions about adding some accessories that it hadn't came with. He added new excellent grips, we changed out the original uncomfortable seat, we added a very cool rechargeable LED headlight so he can see in the dark and people can see him, added some reflectors, and some killer BMX pegs. I figured dropping it of on a Friday morning would give them the weekend to fit the bike in, nope Michael said he would call me later in the afternoon when it was finished. Wow, was totally not expecting that kind of service at that speed and he didn't even break my delicate checking account. I would like thank all of Mike's Bike Shop's staff, but specifically Michael and Matthew. Michael went above and beyond to make sure I had an awesome kids bike. Thank you Michael. A boys first real bike is kind of a big deal and you and I hooked him up. So much so that he was riding around the neighborhood tonight and it 12 degrees outside plus wind chill. He is very HAPPY kid and that makes me a very happy dad/customer. I will be back for all my bicycle service and purchases in the future. I highly recommend the guys over at Mike's Bike Shop. So my husband surprised me by taking me here yesterday to buy me a bike for Mother's Day. We had a great person helping us by the name of Loren(Sp). I had no idea I was riding a bike that was too tall for me until it was pointed out. After riding three different bike's I decided to go with the suggestion of a smaller bike. This person was so knowledgeable and took the time to make sure I was comfortable and to explain why the size mattered. Thank you, Loren! This is the place to go, hands down:) PS: very disappointed...it's been 4 weeks and still no bike! Had to call to see if it came in two weeks ago. Yes it was it but there were chips in the paint. I forgot to check-in this time. Oh well. We live not too far from Mike's Bike Shop. It's a smaller shop which has been around for years. Being a cyclist, I've stopped here periodically over the years and now, my wife is looking for a new bike. Since they are relatively small, their selection of bikes is not huge and they focus on a few brands. But, they can get whatever you want. We were actually looking for a model they don't stock. But, no worries, the salesperson went to her computer and pulled up what we were looking for saying they could have it in and put together in a few days. She also offered options - showing us others in the same category she could get we may also like - options. They do have a large selection of parts and accessories. Pricing is about the same as other shops in the area. I also noticed that they had a few used bikes available, although the selection was small. Very warm and welcoming feeling walking in here...like they knew you since childhood. I picked up my bike I ordered online and everyone I spoke to was helpful and carried good conversation. I haven't rode a bike since my California Freestyle bike when I was in grade school so I'm out of touch with all the new features on bikes nowadays. Since COVID sold everything out, I ended buying a brand I never heard of...Bulls Bike Sharptail. I just went around the block with it and I'm happy with my purchase. Not even one star.... I fixed (I guess) my sons bicycle. Paid closed to $300 for maintenance and changed both tires. My son ride first time for this season. Flat tires (off cause didn't use for winter, we pump air). But some how I guess didn't put air in it right. I never check the edge for pump air (other bike...didn't know has to check edge of tires), and they never mention it. Now, some wrong with brakes. They'll almost hurt my son. Understand local shop (that's why I went), but I was wrong. maintenance are very important for rider. They should take seriously. So expensive for DID NOT fix and maintain for my sons bicycle. I guess we should simply go to dicks sports. Wish we can get all money back. Not recommended that store. read more

Stopped by for a new "big boy" bike for my learning to ride 7-year old. Joyce took the time to find the right bike with the right fit. They also took the time to adjust the hand brake to fit his hands so he would not have issues grabbing the brake while riding. Very rude! I've been coming here for several years now. I spoke with someone on the phone about bike parts and he suggested bringing my bike in to make sure I get the right components. I came in with the bike and started to talk with an older man (owner?) who wasn't very helpful and not paying attention to what had been figured out on the phone earlier. At that point I think the same younger man I spoke with on the phone came over to assist. He was as nice and professional as he had been on the phone call. At this point the older man said "I've got this" and shooed the repair guy away. Not only did he "not have this", it seemed obvious he wasn't interested in helping... just trying to sell me a new bike. Over the years., I've bought a bike rack, bike accessories and parts from this shop but I won't be visiting Mike's Bike Shop again anytime soon. read more

I was totally pleased when VJ got my defective SRAM e-taps replaced under warranty & reinstalled them on my beloved BMC. He also made some common sense suggestions for changing other things on the bike that made a big difference in performance for minimal cost. Interestingly enough, the owner of Mike's Bike Shop isn't named Mike at all, it's a gentleman named Wayne who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about bicycles, and actively involved in the Illinois bicycle community. His son also works at the store repairing bicycles. I struggled on what to rate the bike shop. On one hand, my experience is a tune up and repair which involved several shop visits and unfortunately, the bike still won't change gears. On the other hand, Wayne and his staff are always courteous and friendly, and appear very skilled. I'm keeping the score high in consideration of the good attitudes and personalities there, which is appreciated, and these days is hard to come by. Everyone who works there is very excited about cycling, and Wayne and his family have been personally involved with expansion of the local bike trails. While waiting for some of my recent repairs to be completed, he spent time educating me about CAMBr and other biking organizations. He is well known and respected in the community, as evident from the many people who dropped by to share biking stories during my visits. They sell many different brands, including Cannondale, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Raleigh, and several different BMX bicycles. They also carry a full line of accessories and parts and are close by the Deer Drove trails. read more

I called here a few months back asking about how much it would cost to install a new fork on my mountain bike. I was told it would be $40 to put the fork on (e.g., remove crown race from old fork and put on new fork, put new star nut in, etc.) and an additional $20 to cut the steerer. I asked why it would cost $60 to install a fork while other LBS were quoting $40, and I was told that "they're only charging $40 for the installation, the cutting of the steerer isn't included in their prices. They'll charge you at least $20 extra to cut the steerer." This is 100% not true. Every other LBS I talked to said that the cutting is included in the price. Plus, I'm completely aware that it takes no special skills or tools to cut a steerer.. all you need to do is measure the old steerer and cut the new one to match, you can even do this with a hacksaw. In the end, I took my bike and fork to Wheels of Northbrook, where they installed (AND cut the steerer) for $20 total. The owner of that place even offered to stay open later for me to drop it off, or let me bring it in the next day and have it done while I wait. I came in the next morning, and was out in 30 min, even saving $40. I might give Mike's Bike Shop another shot in the future, but I don't think I'll be getting service done there anytime soon. read more

Stay away from this place. I went there with my son looking for a bike. I was looking around to see what they have in stock. I am aware of bicycle shortage during this pandemic that's why I'm going to all local bicycle shop hoping to get lucky and find a bike for my son. Even just a nice frame since I'm planning to build a bike for him. Then this guy from the counter came. I asked him if they still have any stock bicycles for sale. He looked at me like I'm an ignorant who doesn't know anything about bicycles. Then he answered me in a very sarcastic way in front of my son saying "Are you not aware of the bicycle shortage and parts?" So I told him we are driving around to hoping to get lucky. And he just turned his back and laughed. Then my son looked at me and felt embarrassed. He could just tell us I am sorry but we don't have anything right now. That's all I need to know. That's not how you treat a customer. Or just maybe I am Asian that's why. So we drove to 7 mile cycle and the guy there took time to show us what they have in stock. And found a bike for my son worth $2200. Took it home and my son was very happy. read more

Sara was very helpful, she wanted to know what kind of riding I was doing and gave me several options to look at while very specifically pointing out the differences in each. Very knowledgeable, nice, and not pushy at all. Honestly a big part of the reason I walked out buying the bike she recommended for me. The store itself is nice with plenty of accessories and while not a huge selection of bikes, they have it where it counts...quality and range of use. New bikes come with a flat repair and tune up within 1 year. Was told hassle free return/exchange (within reason) if something didn't feel right. All in all great experience, had all my questions answered and purchased a new Specialized bike while on my lunch break. Can't beat that. read more

As soon as you walk in, you're greeted and the staff is very knowledgeable and passionate about bikes. Was able to score a nice Giant Roam 4 even with bikes being so scarce during these hard times. So disappointed. I bought a $40 bike basket there for my cruiser. I couldn't figure out how to put it on and called the shop. They said I could bring it in and they would put it on for me, not a problem. I did a few days later and they wanted to charge me $15 to put it on ? I couldn't believe it as many bike shops would do this for free. I returned the basket and will not be going back. Disappointing as they lost my families business long term over not putting on a basket. I bought the same basket at a bike shop in Barrington who will put it on for free. **May 2017 update** Mike's reached out to me based on my post, which I appreciated very much. They offered to replace the tubes and make it right, so I brought it back and gave it another shot. I was very satisfied with the service and fast turn-around. My bike rides like a dream, so I am thrilled. They asked more questions to understand my problem and recommended a tire pump with a pressure gauge to make sure my tires are properly inflated every time. It's been working great, so I wanted to make sure and update my review to account for their service and help to correct my problem! -------- I really wanted to like this place after my first bike shop in Arlington Heights closed. I'd had my bike (Fuji) for 3 or 4 years with no issues but then my bike tires kept going really low between rides. I figured I needed new tires, so I brought it to Mike's. I'd also never had a tune up, so I asked for that too. The staff were friendly and they had a good selection of bikes in the store, so it seemed like a good place. The gave me a quote for the tune up and said they would replace the tires if there was a leak. Then they told me that good quality bikes should actually need air in the tires before each ride, so the tires were probably fine. I wish I would have just asked them to replace the tires regardless. I'm not an avid biker, and this was my first "grown up" bike (as in one that didn't come from a big box store!) so I was skeptical but gave them the benefit of the doubt. They're the experts, right, but I said more than once that the tires weren't just a little soft--they were darn near rim-to-the-ground FLAT. The bike was ready as promised and the tires were inflated (they said no leaks, so did not replace). A few weeks went by before I could take it out on a ride and....flat. I was pretty discouraged and ended up just storing the bike for the rest of the summer. I travel a lot for work, so I couldn't take it back in for a while and by then I figured I'd just deal with it the next year. The next summer (2016) the tires are worse than ever and don't even hold air long enough to complete a 30 min ride, so I've got to do something. I'll try another store and insist the tires get changed. I just don't believe that for 3 or 4 years the tires would take air maybe twice a summer but now they can't last for one ride. I might not be a bike expert, but that just doesn't make sense to me! I don't feel like Mike's really listened to me. read more

Great little shop with employees who truly have a passion for their bikes. Been there three times and always happy to help and answer questions. Only three stars though because I took a bike in and said it had a flat tire. They didn't believe me, aired up the tire, and because it didn't deflate immediately... sent me on my merry way. No charge though, which is cool. Next morning- Tire was flatter than a Denny's Pancake. Took the tire back, and they said "Must be a flat". That's what I was thinking yesterday too. Also asked them about bikes in the $400 range- they said you won't find much and didn't seem interested in helping me on that price level. Anyway, I've found all bike shops have some level of "Uppityness" with their customers because they pride themselves in their knowledge so much. Sometimes though, that pride brings a fallen experience. We will be going back for sure, just could be a more enjoyable experience if the staff were a bit more approachable. read more

I go to Village CycleSport now. I purchased a bike at Mike's Bikes that came with the wrong model rear derailleur. At the time of purchase, I hadn't noticed this. It was only when I was on Specialized's website looking at the specks of my bike that is saw this. I told the shop about this issue and they said they'd need to follow up with Specialized. The shop told me they could install the correct rear derailleur onto my bike after they talked to Specialized, but there might be a small parts fee. With them wanting to charge me for something that wasn't my fault at all, I lost all respect for them. Luckily when I went to pick my bike up with the new rear derailleur, the guy saw my side of things and didn't charge me. read more

I was very happy with my experience purchasing a BMX bike for my son. He wanted a Fitbike brand, and he had very specific ideas about the features he needed. It was a pleasant surprise to find a shop that carried this higher-end bike, and they had several to choose from. I purchased one as a surprise birthday gift, but I was concerned that it might not be exactly what my son wanted. Wayne told me it could be exchanged within 7 days, so long as it was still in the exact condition as when it left the store. This made the purchase easy and worry free. My son loved the bike but we returned to the store to see if they had anything else he would rather have. We were helped by a guy named Matt, who spent about an hour talking to my son about bikes. It was clear he really knew his stuff, and he was able to determine what features we really needed in a bike. Best of all, he didn't try to up-sell us at all. We left with the bike I had originally purchased, and a much better understanding of the latest equipment. I would definitely send people to this bike shop after the service we received. I stopped short of giving it 5 stars only because the over-all selection of BMX bikes was limited, but I can't really blame them since it was January. If you are looking for a different style of bike, it looks like they have a broad range to choose from. read more

I am not a fan of this bike shop. I originally went to this shop because it was one of the only shops that sold the brand of bike that I ride. I assumed that they would be knowledgeable and helpful. I was wrong. After snapping two spokes in my rear rim I took my rim in for repair. The person working the service department informed me that it would take about two weeks to fix the rim (it's about a 20 min fix). I decided that two weeks was longer than I wanted to wait and asked to purchase the spokes so I could make the repair myself. The person became very angry and after some frustrating discussion he finally sold be the parts. I never went back. Shop around. There are several better bike shops close to Mikes read more
