My first time in this restaurant. I was underwhelmed initially with the day old warmed bread. Then a very bland watery minestrone soup which was mostly cabbage. The italian vinaigrette I suspect bottled. Recommend switching to a nice balsamic. The sacchetti claimed to have cheeses and truffle mushrooms. They were tasty but i didn't see or taste mushrooms. Others had risotto which seemed to be prepared correctly with arborio rice and was tasty. The gnocchi were soft but the marinara sauce was strange. I thought pricing was typical for the area. The wine pour seemed skimpy for the price. The place is small and you will hear every word the next table is saying! read more

Such a great place!! Loved the old time music and atmosphere, and the quiet ambiance lit by these really cool and interesting glass art objects on the wall. But most of all, the surprising tastes of dinner we enjoyed tonight. The grouper was lovely and perfectly prepared and seasoned. We ordered the sauce on the side, which allowed us to really taste the full flavor of the fish and the chefs preparation. The side of sautéd veggies was lovely. Not too soft, really tasty with perfect ratio of butter, salt and garlic. We went with a side of pasta w garlic and oil, and it too was just right. A pinch of salt was all I added, and it was perfect. My husband ordered the pasta stuffed with truffle and cheese that was perfectly luscious. Again, he went easy on the sauce. We ordered wine. The Pinot Grigio was perfect and generous! The service was also just right. Helpful, friendly, accommodating - we really could not have asked for more. Since moving back to this neighborhood I have come to live this place as much as I did 45 years ago when I lived here. Food is very good and reasonably priced (a rarity here on the North Shore of Chicago). And their staff is very well trained and consistently friendly. Really just a gem. read more

So I ordered a extra crispy pizza tonight and it was good but, would be better if all the dough was cooked, at least half of it was not even cooked! Most of the time it's very good, but 30 percent of the time it's not as good as normal. It's a great place and super nice people, but not consistent pizza. read more

While the food here is DELICIOUS, I wish the atmosphere were a bit better and that the restaurant were cleaner. They renovated pretty recently but the restaurant doesn't have that Ma & Pa Italian restaurant vibe to it anymore. I wish they'd dim the lighting and make this place feel a little nicer. I haven't been here in around fifteen years more or less. It was very good back then and had a killer fish fry that we construction workers loved, not to mention the wonderful Italian meals. I bet I've been here thirty or more times over the years...long before YELP. We stopped in for a pizza and ended up in the side room which is a silly room with a TV fireplace! Absolutely no personality. The restaurant dining area is in need of a complete make over. It hasn't changed in all the time I've been here. Anyway the service was okay once they got to the table. It wasn't really busy with three tables having been filled in the silly room. I was just a couple more minutes from walking out. Still haven't figured out why they put us here instead of the main dining room which wasn't full at all. We had the Kitchen Special pizza. It included sausage, mushroom, onion, green pepper, bacon and Italian beef for a little over twenty bucks for a X-large which is an excellent value. Cheapest anywhere in the area by far and brought my two star review up another star to three. It was pretty good too but not near the top of my pizza list. Hubby and I seem to going back to places we haven't been to in a decade or more! Italian Kitchen is one of those places. The menu is old school, but there is nothing wrong with that. The service was good (more on that later). However, the ambience leaves something to be desired. It's not bad... just not a "date night" kind of place. I had wine... because it looks like the waiters/waitresses make the drinks themselves. So I took a pass. Wine was fine. I ordered salmon. I like my salmon a bit on the rare side. I told the waitress. When she brought out the meals for everyone (we were there with another couple), she explained she sent mine back because it was overcooked. Wow! That is great service. When she did bring mine, it was cooked just the way I like it. I probably won't rush back since there are other places with great old school italian in Highwood... but if someone suggests going here again, count me in! read more

Well I'm back for another review Tortellacchi and chicken piccata. I'm very very frustrated right now $45 for two Entrées no soup no salad nothing. I don't mind paying a little bit more for food here because normally it's very good there's been a few times but it wasn't very good I called and spoke with them and they made it right this time we ordered the same thing that we always do this time we were shorted on the portion sizes (remember in my last review I said that the portion sizes were back and was very excited) I called to talk to them to ask them about this John was not available so I spoke to a manager a woman I apologize I forgot her name. I asked her if they have change the portion size for that meal she said they have never changed any portion sizes (i've been eating there for 30 years I know what they set me up to expect) She proceeded to tell me that there were supposed to be 17 on one plate I said that's not correct we've only ever received seven she proceeded to argue with me I said well that means that I've been shorted the whole time that we've been ordering from you guys and she said we would never put seven on a plate and it looks terrible it's always been 17 I said well ma'am every time we've ever ordered it has always been seven tonight we received six. Now granted I didn't even get into the other things that I wanted to talk to her about because she was continuously arguing with me. So I'm going to put some pictures up again tonight. My order of the chicken piccata was exceptional it was very very good. However the pasta side dish keeps shrinking. On my order I asked for extra piccata sauce because I like to put it on my spaghetti I received maybe 2 tablespoons of piccata sauce in a side dish. My mom received six portions of her dish when there's normally seven she was telling me they were supposed to be 17 and that I must have ordered a half dish which I did not. But if she is correct then they have been shorting us 10 tortellacchi on every order we've ever ordered. Now I didn't want to accuse them of shorting my mom one piece of her dish so I thought I would call and check to see if they changed their portion size because maybe the delivery driver ate one of my moms portion. And when I asked the question again she argued with me. I said maybe you are confusing it with tortellini instead of tortellacchi She assured me that She was not confusing it with that. Needless to say we have only ever received seven on a plate tonight we received six. The reason I thought maybe the delivery driver had eaten one of my moms portions is because the food was picked up at 5:19 and we did not receive it until after six the order was supposed to be delivered at 5:45. No big deal waiting an extra 20 minutes for dinner from the Italian Kitchen is not a problem for me because usually I love their food when the right chef is in the kitchen. (I say this because last time the pasta was not cooked correctly and it was terrible Amongst other times and I chose not to leave a negative review because I normally love their food) tonight the pasta was cooked correctly however the filling was lacking wasn't very flavorful and there was half the portion of filling they usually have. It just seems to me that depending on who's in the kitchen it's going to depend on how well your meal goes and even though they say their portions have not changed I know for a fact that they have. The spaghetti that came with the meal was usually a whole lot more. And I understand maybe having to raise your prices due to the pandemic and like I said when their food is on it's actually worth it but when the portion sizes drop dramatically I'm saying maybe I'd rather spend my $45 elsewhere. At $17.20 and $17.75 per plate I expect more (Now remember there's no salads with this) The pictures that I'm adding below please remember that three of the tortellacchi have been eaten and a small amount of the spaghetti and one piece of chicken have been eaten. I don't mind singing praise when praises due but when I order from there I really look forward to their food but it's hit or miss. My order has been good the last three or four times that I have ordered but the last two times my mom's order was severely lacking and that makes me sad. read more

I came here with a group of co-workers for lunch during the lunch rush, so it took some time to get a table. We were accommodated with menus while waiting so we could place our order and the food would be ready when our table was ready. It didn't take too long at all. I ordered one the lunch specials which was chicken served with hot peppers in a nice sauce and came with a side of pasta in marinara sauce. It also included a starter salad all for $9.99, so that's a solid deal. The food came out rather quickly once we got seated at our table. It was a lot of food, but it was good. Italian Kitchen is definitely a solid value if you're looking for Italian food when in downtown Deerfield. Overall, I'll come back in the future. The portions are generous and the food is good. Tried calling for 45 at 6pm last Friday to make what would have been a substantial pickup order and they did not answer the phone. Been a while since I have been to this establishment but from what I recall they had a decent local take on Italian cuisine but when you refuse to answer your phone on a Friday from 5:40- 6:35 you have lost my business. LITERALLY called 7-10 times during a 45 min period and not once did someone answer. It wasn't a busy signal...just nobody bothered to answer. No excuse... you are a restaurant and it's Friday at 6 pm. I'll gladly move on and give my money to the vast array of Italian restaurants and pizza places other than you in the area. This place is really hit or miss. No consistency. The fish is usually good. The carbonara can be great or terrible. Service is so-so.

Great Italian classic food. We actually like to do take out or delivery from here. It is packed every Friday night so it's just easier. I am especially fond of their spinach lasagna. It's the absolute best in the north shore! Love the homemade tomato sauce with just the right amount of garlic and spices. It's filled with lots of noodles and cheesy goodness. The fish dishes are also really really good! I tried the bruschetta for the first time recently and I liked it but it's not really traditional. Think more like a cross of French bread pizza and a traditional bruschetta. It was made on garlic bread with the traditional tomatoes and olive oil but then had melted cheese on it. It was tasty and I would get it again with the proper expectation. Service is always super friendly. We started coming to Italian Kitchen about 30 years ago when we moved to this area. We thought it was great for a long time. Then things went to more average after a while. With the pandemic things really were sketchy for a while. Then about 2-3 weeks ago we ordered again. My son and I both looked at each other and said " What happened to Italian Kitchen!" It was great again. Just delicious. We ordered again this weekend and the same thing was true. I don't know if they got a new chef but the old great Italian Kitchen we remembered is back! read more

We had 17 people for my dad's 96th birthday party at The Italian Kitchen. Everything was excellent and the service was impeccable! While both entrees we had at the party were great, we loved the Lemon Sea Bass so much we ordered it tonight for delivery. And the Limoncello Cake is the bomb! read more

I think this place is overrated. Their food is ok, but there are so many better Italian restaurants around. I understand the loyalty being that it is a neighborhood place, but the prices lead one to expect a higher quality of food, but it just doesn't get there. A friend from high school was in town and tasked me with finding a place for our long overdue reunion. Italian Kitchen came up as an option because it was a) close to her hotel b) reasonably priced and c) appeared to be relatively well-liked on Yelp. I parked in back and came in through the back door, which meant navigating through the dining room. Ultimately, a poor choice on my part because the dining room was crowded, as one would expect at 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday. While I waited for my friend and her family, I watched a hostess argue with a man picking up a carry out order about his use of a coupon. She was refusing to believe that an item on his order was a regular menu item and not a special until he picked up a menu and pointed it out to her. I was intrigued about why she didn't know it was a regular menu item and, further, why she wasn't more helpful and willing to pick up the menu herself to look instead of being argumentative. That should have been a solid indicator of my evening. We were seated right away when my friend arrived with her husband and two children. The table was awkward -- half of it was a booth that was too high for an adult to comfortably sit at the table. It worked out okay for the kids, though one kneeled on the booth and leaned over the table to eat and the other stood. Service was spotty all night. Drinks were never refilled. Ever. Servers kept putting plates of food down at the completely empty end of the table. Yes, there's space there. But, shockingly, it is not helpful to have our appetizer out of reach of everyone. My friend's husband ordered a mojito, which was made with dark rum (unusual) and had no mint in it, though it did have a slice of lime. Everything about the service felt rushed and half-assed. The interior of the restaurant is dated and not in a vintage way. We had the calamari to start, which was one of the better parts of the meal. It was seasoned well and lightly fried. I had the meat lasagna as my entree. It was a huge portion (it ended up being two dinners). It was a bit heavier on the cheese than I would normally prefer and it was swimming in a dish of sauce but was overall pretty good. The salad that came with the entree was nothing exciting -- iceberg lettuce with a couple of tomatoes. I can see why so many people were picking up carry out orders -- the benefit of the food without the drawback of the service. If you live locally enough to do that, it seems like the way to go. read more

I had heard mixed reviews about this place for years. Finally decided to try it myself. I am glad I did. The menu was classic Italian with lots of heavy dishes - but that is what I was looking for at the time and why I went there. I had lasagna with was a huge flavorful portion. The warm bread was nice and so was the soup. I wouldn't hesitate to go back on a cold winter day as this is the stuff that warms you from the inside. What made it nice as well was the staff. They seemed to know the majority of the customers and clearly have a loyal following. When we went the place was less than half full, by the time we finished they were waiting in line. I just read a review of the day, raving about this restaurant. At first, I saw the Deerfield location and thought--oh, an Italian restaurant, sounds good . . . then it all fell in place. My mouth dropped. I have lived in the area since '87. I had heard from a friend who loves to love restaurants that this was 'great'. For years, I would drive by and look--it was inviting in appearance. It became one of those 'I wonder what it's like? I want to go.' It never happened until a few years ago when my two twenty-somethings were in the car and we drove by. I suggested enthusiastically that we stop and try. The two naysayers gave in and we walked in after the lunch hour. The owner was there and friendly. We ordered a variety of traditional items. They all disappointed. The naysayers delighted in their 'I told you so-s'. Recommendation: Go across the street o Biagi's. Much better. Go down Waukegan--the used to be very good, now relocated Rosebud is even better. So I politely say there are lots of average Italian restaurants where it does get way better than this. read more

I wish there was a 0. The food was terrible and the service was barely decent. My family of 3 ate here last weekend. The gnocchi wasn't cooked all the way they and the eggplant Parmesan looked as though they just threw two heaps of crap in the plate. The salad consisted of about a palm full of lettuce, a giant hunk of tomato and hunk of cucumber. The dressing was basically oil in a to go cup. The only thing the was appealing was the bread with oil and cheese. My son ended up needing to vomit in their bathroom and refused dessert after the spaghetti. Very disappointing. Ribs were completely dried out and spaghetti with marinara sauce came with a puddle of water. I can only assume that the chef (actually "cook" since he/she clearly was not a chef) couldn't care less. Not to take 5 more seconds to make sure the pasta is well drained shows a complete lack of care. The most telling of all was my salad which included the top of the tomato with the tomato core. Really? You just cut the tomato and didn't want to take the extra effort to toss out the core? On the positive side, everyone was very nice. Good service. We Had to put one star because YELP WONT ALLOW to leave zero stars. Here is our horrible story about The Italian Pizza Kitchen. We ordered bruschetta, a pizza and some spaghetti. The bruschetta was a bit pricy for and order of 3. $5.75 is what we paid. I thought perhaps the pieces were going to be larger than your average bruschetta since only THREE pieces came with it. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. I was thinking maybe big pieces??? NOT AT ALL!!! They were, small, smaller and smallest! See the sad pics that we took!! Next was the pizza, BBQ Deluxe. This consisted of bacon, onion, sausage and BBQ sauce. When we opened up the box all of the toppings had slid to one side of the pizza. Maybe the the driver carried upright? Maybe he is new to the world?? Maybe he could care less??? All I know is we were pissed!!!! It did taste good however. Sad that my hands were covered in BBQ sauce because I had to put the pizza back together UGH!!!!!!!! Real quick about the spaghetti.... It was good no complaints. Lol. Not a bad place, but not great either. I think one can do better elsewhere without trying too hard. I had to take a couple of tries at the menu because the waitress kept coming back to me to tell me they were out of stuff. Once perhaps, more than once is an immediate turn off. I think I got the fish and it was OK, but the rest of my family are pasta heads and they were not impressed. Nothing bad to report, but for the money spent, we will most likely not return. read more

The food is fairly priced, classic Italian and the folks who work here are all really warm and wonderful. Last time I went, I had the linguine with mussels and really enjoyed it; the sauce was flavorful and well seasoned, and both the pasta and the mussels were nicely cooked. Very cute staple in Deerfield. It's right on Deerfield road and has been here since the 60's. The place is very cozy and a little outdated in a good way. We were seated right away and our server was lovely. My mom and I split an entree and there was no additional cost (I hate that). We were thinking about one thing and the server invited us to try something else. Im so glad we did! Tremendous. It came with a very nice salad and the food was a nice portion. At the end of the meal, the manager came by and invited us to try their homemade lemon alcoholic drink. It was very good. Their was plenty of parking and it sounds like they've got some nice events going on during the week. It's casual and would be a nice place to bring a family. Will be back! read more
