    Italian kitchen thank you!!

Italian Kitchen did an amazing job taking care of 15 of us from Deerfield having a reunion on March 18. The food is outstanding. The pizza was amazing. The tiramisu the salads. Everyone was so kind. The staff was courteous and thoughtful. What an experience we will return here a year after a year as we get together.

I had dined here years ago - Pre-Yelp - so I was expecting a retro old school restaurant with the red checked tablecloths and murals of Italy on the wall. The restaurant was similar to what I remembered but now there were backlit, colorful mosaic artworks on every wall (more on this later). The restaurant wasn't full and we were immediately seated in a booth, bread basket was offered (and accepted), drink orders taken. The menu is traditional old school Italian and I ordered eggplant Parmesan and my companion ordered spaghetti carbonara. Our entrees came with soup or salad. I picked clam chowder (pretty good, lots of veggies and clams) and my friend chose the green salad. There was a lull here as the tables began to fill with patrons and the other room was hosting a private party. Not that it signifies anything, but the median age in the restaurant was about 65. Well, actually, it could signify that the restaurant caters to a particular kind of taste, but actually, I did see several cars lined up outside for carryout and the drivers were below the median age. My companion enjoyed their carbonara. It was rich and creamy without being overly so, and had nice chunks of fried pancetta. My eggplant Parmesan arrived like a large lasagna. I typically enjoy thin crispy fried eggplant drenched in a red sauce. This was an enormous mound of eggplant surrounding ricotta and covered in Parmesan cheese and sauce and broiled. Plus a bowl of pasta. It wasn't what I was expecting but it was ok and I enjoyed the sauce. We weren't offered dessert so we paid the check and left. So, those backlit mosaics that covered all the walls of the restaurant...the artist, Zee Haag, creates these mosaic gemscapes out of semiprecious and precious gemstones, minerals and crystals. I at first thought them simple and gaudy but now I understand that all these gemstones are inlaid piece by piece. I tried to surreptitiously take photos (but then the restaurant became quite full) so I will have to return for more old school Italian and to examine the artwork more carefully.

The food and service is here is top notch. The prices are affordable and the food you get is of great quality. The Sachetti was exceptional and very cheesy. The shrimp and broccoli were pretty darn good and the salads as the side with ranch were a treat too. The meatballs were small but the taste was big!

What a find in the middle of Deerfield! Felt like an old school Italian restaurant on the east coast. Great staff, very welcoming with a real pride in the place (heard one say she has been there for 20+ years!). Home made pastas, authentic flavors and large portions. We will be back!

We went here for a birthday. This place has been around forever. We had a group of 7. This place is pretty small but it was somewhat busy. The takeout line outside was really long. Business is doing well. The waiter was alright but not the most attentive. It took a while to order. It took forever to get our food. We had to ask politely actually. I think this is a slower-paced restaurant where you spend a couple hours easily. I can appreciate that. I just hope the waiter can read the table with 3 teens and us not ordering alcohol or appetizers. Nobody complained about the food. My daughter and I really enjoyed the pesto chicken and pasta. She took it home and ate the leftovers.

    Side of pasta.

Now, after not visiting for quite a while we were there yesterday and I am VERY disappointed!! Their Frutti di Mare Pizza used to be great (and having lived near the Italian border I feel I can rate it) - now it's a Seafood gravy thrown on a breadbowl made of pizzadough. Bonta, if you change from making the real stuff then why would I come to you? I was so disappointed. (and - had I wanted this I would have ordered Pasta with Seafood and gravy. It did not taste bad for that but it was awful if you go there to expect an Italian Pizza! We also tried the Grilled Octopus appetizer - it was great just a little burned unfortunately. The Chicken Marsala was very good and also came with a soup that was good too. Again - the reason for me to go to Bonta was the Italian Pizza and this expectation was clearly not met. I might try another pizza but not that frutti di mare unless they get back to how they did it before The service was great, our waitress was very attentive!! (The owner walked around but she only talked to guests she knows as it seemed)

We ordered Pepperoni Thin, 1/2 cheese, 1/2 cheese thin, Gfree Pepperoni, Gfree Penne with meat sauce, Brussels, and Onion Rings. The pizza was crisp and the cheese was nicely cooked. I really love the sauce as it has a nice little sweetness to it. The Brussels were good and roasted perfectly and had a nice drizzle of sauce. The onion rings were large and had crunchy. The server was very attentive and funny. We really appreciated the fan! They also had live music. I def will be back here.

We enjoyed our food-- the Caesar salads were fresh and crisp and the entrees were generously portioned-- the spinach ravioli, vodka sauce rigatoni, shrimp linguine, and eggplant parm. My EP parm was excellent -- still crispy with tasty marinara sauce and a nice portion of gooey mozzarella-- the side of linguine with tomatoes and spinach was a nice surprise. We enjoyed the Santa Julia Malbec bottle too. They tack on a 3% charge that the staff doesn't share in so we asked to remove it. Overall good but the service needs to level up!

I noticed a portrait on the wall next to the stand and inquired who it was. Her name was Sara Rowe, and it's a loving memorial to a long time Melman partner. Melman combined her first name, Sara, with a classic Italian suffix to create the name "Saranello's". It's an upscale restaurant with upscale food. But at a mid-scale price point, Thanks for that! The food: I had the baked eggplant parm, since I'm from Chicago. You know what I mean if you're local. And it's my new benchmark. Well done! The wife had the braised short rib ravioli. It's now her desert island dish. It's a very very nice space. And our server knew the menu backwards and forwards. Anyone who's had the grated "parmesan" in the green can will appreciate the genuine Parmiggiano Reggiano they serve here. Freshly grated with no cellulose, and that beautiful tang! With homemade tiramisu for dessert, and a glass of wine, the tab was about $75, but you get what you pay for, and you'll get what you're paying for here!

It turns out, Nico is GREAT! Many of our favorites from Viaggio remain on the menu; the crusty bread, the Caesar salad, the gnocchi, the chicken Parmesan, all were top-notch. Terrific seafood dishes remain, too, although we didn't try them during this visit. And some new items that will be fun to try have been added, such as pizza. As always, the service was friendly and efficient. And best of all, the spumoni bombe is still on the menu! (It's our favorite and SO delicious.). We loved the old Viaggio's and really wanted to love Nico's, but one major design decision has completely changed the experience for us. The bar was always the heart of this restaurant. It was a comfortable neighborhood bar where locals could have dinner, drinks and conversation. The new owners installed the pizza oven and pizza-making station directly in the middle of it. As a result, the bar is now literally a pizza counter. When you sit there, you are sitting directly in front of a working pizza station, watching pizzas being prepared, with boxes and supplies around the bar. Instead of feeling like you're having dinner and drinks at a neighborhood bar, it feels like you're sitting at the counter of a pizzeria. For us, that simply isn't an appealing or relaxing way to spend an evening. The layout also makes normal bar service extremely awkward. The pizza operation physically separates the bartenders from many of the customers sitting at the bar, requiring them to walk around the bar to take orders and serve patrons. Finally, you are sitting directly in front of a large, very hot pizza oven. The heat is significant. The pizza maker working in front of the oven was, quite understandably, sweating heavily throughout the evening just a few feet in front of us while we were trying to eat dinner. That's not a criticism of the employee--it's an illustration of why placing a commercial pizza oven directly in the middle of a dining bar simply doesn't work. The frustrating part is that so much about Nico's is good, particularly the staff. But putting the pizza operation in the middle of what was previously the heart of the restaurant fundamentally changes the experience. I hope the owners reconsider the layout and return the bar to being a bar. We would happily come back.
