For many years, Deerfield's Bakery was our "happy place" for birthday cakes, holiday desserts and sweet treats! However, there really won't be any "sugar and spice" in this review. Over the Jewish New Year, I ordered and prepaid for a Frangipane Apple tart. According to the store's web site, this holiday special would feed 8-10 guests. When I arrived to pick up the pastry, I was shocked to see how small it was and immediately realized that we'd never get 7 pieces cut from the tart. The owners were not available, and the shop's new manager agreed that I would need a second dessert. His solution was to sell us a second pastry at a 25 per cent discount. May I add that the Frangipane tarts were dry, doughy, tasteless and short on apple slices. As a former consumer reporter, I did a bit of research and learned that a bakery item 7" in diameter will serve 5-7 guests maximum. The store's new owners have failed to answer my recent calls. Their cakes are awesome, it is so detailed, made to perfection, and delicious. Really make your mouth waters. All of their offers on the menu are fresh, new, and really taste so good. They also have cookies that is perfect for kids and with those people have a sweet tooth. This place is great spot to grab and buy some cakes for any kind of occasions and events. My cake was delicious! I walked in randomly to look around for a cake since I had gone to a couple of other places to look at cakes. As soon as I came in I could smell that yummy bakery smell. Once I started to look around I saw a variety of cookies, pastries, and cakes, lots of cakes. The cake that I got was really delicious, beautifully made, and affordable. Some bakeries are expensive, but I can say that based on the other two places I had been to this was reasonably priced for the type of cake it was. I was helped by a really nice gentleman that asked me what I was looking for and he talked to me about the different kind of cakes and what was inside them. Really took his time. Ugh. A waste of my calories. I walked into Deerfield's actually hoping for a slice of pie. They only had cherry and apple as far as individual slices, and I wasn't about to walk out of there with a full pie! So I opted for the S'Mores cupcake. It was so pretty: it had a nice, giant fluffy marshmallow-looking frosting top. I took my first bite into my cupcake and was instantly disappointed. The frosting literally had both the taste and consistency of a pure stick of butter. I could have bitten into a stick of Land o' Lakes and would have honestly gotten the same result. The cake was dry and flavorless as well; it didn't really taste like chocolate. To top it all off, the frosting pretty much fell off and separated from the rest of the cake, probably because the frosting was so hard and lacked any type of moisture or gel-like texture, so it didn't stay fastened onto the cupcake. I ate half of the cupcake to give it a fair shot, and then threw the rest out (and I don't typically throw dessert out). Truly disappointed. Will not return. read more

I haven't been in this bakery for quite a while and was shocked at how it looks. In the 46 years we have been in this area for 40 at least we've bought every cake etc there. I would never go back to this unprofessional sloppy looking shop The young people who were trying to be helpful but really had little knowledge were sweet but sloppy looking, a reflection of the store. Computer was down and there is no book or pictures. Size of the cakes were on rounders cut out by a young child & marked in a child's writing with size and quantity in magic marker. Whole experience was shocking I would never go there again and would be hesitant to feel their goods are anything but a reflection of the store. I ordered the Queen Elizabeth cake, layers of strawberries white cake and bananas covered with whipped cream and lady fingers. This time I feel as If they gave me a cake that was 5 days old. The bananas were brown on the inside and they were hardly any bananas or strawberries. Won't be ordering from them again. No cake for Mom's 100th Birthday! Called and called to place an order, no answer. Left message, no response for days. Went to the bakery and placed the order for a birthday cake in person, explaining it was for a 100th birthday, what to write etc, order was taken, date and time for pick up given. A week later rec'd a call from customer service saying that she didn't see an order for a cake. We said we went in person to the bakery to place the order and paid for it with a credit card. I drive by this place often when I commute to work. Decided to try it out and get some pastries for the office. Biggest problem - there are a lack of signs indicating prices for half the items. Only 2 people in the store - register guy and a young lady behind the counter who ignored all eye contact. Every time I had a question about the prices, I had to wait in line to talk to Register Guy. Turns out they also sell slightly discounted previously baked goods... But I didn't know because there are no signs..! Finally had to leave because this little sidetrip was taking too much time. Bought 2 pastries and paid cash but didn't get the 2.5% cash discount they advertise all over the store. Register Guy also rounded up the total price - what the.. ?? Never again. The cashier wanted to put the Paczki in a paper bag. I asked her can't you put them in a box? She stared at me blankly and still wanted to put them in a paper bag. They are Paczki! Two yeasty doughnut-y layers with filling inside, covered with powdered sugar. You do NOT put them in a paper bag. She said "well, we got this box" and what do you know, 4 Paczki fit perfectly. The young man behind the counter was also very flippant. After asking me "is there anything you want?" and I said "no not yet" his reply was "well you know where I'll be". And if he thought no one was watching him while he looked around the room before he shoved some brownie samples in his mouth, well he was WRONG. Totally unprofessional. The Paczki? Fresh, well-made and delicious. Nice choices like lemon, banana cream, peanut butter, and cookies n cream. The cupcakes, although very pretty, seemed old. Wow - Deerfield's makes some of the best cakes you'll ever eat. I tried their cake at a friend's wedding a couple years ago, and another at their daughter's 1st birthday. It convinced me to order one for my own daughter's 2nd birthday. Firstly, they have an outstanding selection. For kids' parties, if you go to Jewel or Dominick's, you're limited to the theme cakes listed in their book. I wanted a more obscure character on the cake (JoJos Circus, on Disney Channel). I called Deerfield's main number - which services their Deerfield, Schaumburg and Buffalo Grove sites - and the woman knew JoJo immediately. No need to come in and show a picture. And the finished product was absolutely beautiful. BTW, their website lists the huge variety of cakes they offer. Including X-rated cakes. There was one guest who complained that the rich frosting was too thick, which strikes me as ridiculous. Frosting is a good thing! Very professional operation. When I placed your order over the phone, I received an email confirmation listing exactly what I'd ordered. You check it, make sure all the spellings are OK, and that's it. I came here to get some holiday goodies for my office two days before xmas. I wanted to buy a lot of the same type of cookies that they only had in smaller batches. I asked them if I could. It several batches and if the can put them on one tray for me. They told me no but then offered me the tray for $10.00 but I would have to wrap it myself. I would expect a different response from a family owned establishment. None the less I bought a cake instead and a fruit cake as well. I asked if I could order a larger size of the fruit cake and they also said no. Seems like NO is a normal response there. On the bright side I have to say that the fruit cake was very good. I came back a second time to find some more of their fruitcake but they were out. While I was there I decided to get some cute cupcakes for the kids. I also bought an eclair for the road. I was very disappointed! The eclair seemed to have been sitting for a while. It was soggy and it dripped all over me when I went to take a bite in the car. I get home and give the kids the cupcakes and the tell me that they are hard. I cut into one of them and taste it and they were. These things must have been a couple days old. I've been going here for a few years now, great pastries, baked goods and their cakes are not too bad. But for all my visits there I can say I've only had one great experience as a customer. The staff pretty much ignores you, and they are constantly having personal conversations. There is a guy there in the mornings who never says a word to you and you have to guess which register he is going to ring you up at. It would not hurt to say I will help you over there - no you have to stand there while he silently decides how and when to help you. The lady that helps you with the special order cakes has been the only nice person I have ever dealt with there. Again great pastries but horrible service, and as a resident of Deerfield I try to support local businesses but I truly dislike going to Deerfields Bakery. I think the owners have forgotten that its not just baked goods that keep people coming back, its service as well. read more

I visited Deerfield Bakery on Sunday, 8/9/15 to stop and buy my father some cookies. Growing up, we always went to Deerfield Bakery and enjoyed excellent service and products. Sadly, I can say this is no longer the case. The staff there is rude, to say the least. The lady that helped me, Tanya, needs a SERIOUS attitude adjustment and probably should learn not to talk about the customer while they're still standing there. Little does Tanya know, I speak Spanish and understood every single word she was saying about me to the other women there. I started by asking about the different cookies in the front case, since nothing was labeled and I didn't know if anything contained nuts, soy, ect. This apparently annoyed Tanya. After making my selections, which took MAYBE 5 minutes since nothing was labeled, I went to pay. As I was standing at the register, Tanya made sure to turn to the other women, make a snide face and say in Spanish "this woman asking what is this, what is that, what comes in this? Is she going to give me a tip for all this?" Um... no Tanya, I'm not. I'm not going to give you a tip for doing a half-assed version of your job while giving me snide looks and an attitude then talking about me in Spanish practically to my face because YOUR job didn't put out labels and you thought I wouldn't understand you. It's not THAT hard to put cookies into a box. Management definitely needs to intervene and supervise. I would also recommend letting your staff know, more people speak Spanish nowadays, even if they look like they don't. I wonder how many other people know what Tanya has said about them to their faces. I keep reading reviews on here where management says they'll speak to their employees and address it but clearly it's not working. Maybe you should consider some new employees before they put you out of business. I doubt I will ever come back. read more

I hear a lot of people ranting and raving about Deerfields Bakery. I've been a couple of times and the last time was what prompted me to write this review. I just went this past Tuesday morning because I like their blueberry muffins. In addition to that, I wanted to try a sesame seed bagel. The bagel was GROSS. No taste at all if not for the cream cheese that I smeared on it. Just pretty much tasteless. The muffin was good, but their baked goods are not GREAT. My daughter and I had gone around Easter time and then again about a month or so ago and she wanted one of their huge cupcakes. So she got the chocolate one and I got the yellow one. I thought the cupcake was pretty gross, it just tasted funny...she, of course gobbled the entire thing down. I'm giving it two stars for the muffins...I get better bagels at Einsteins! THE BEST tasting sugar cookies...seriously, THE BEST. I don't know what they put into them but they taste unlike any others and the kids love their designs. I wish they weren't so high in price but as a treat, we'll get them. Cakes are great, made to order, friendly staff who can do just about anything. I'm on the fence with this place. Some of the staff are incredibly sweet and helpful, some are downright grouchy. Same goes for the pastries, there are some real gems here and a lot that just makes you go 'meh'.....bland. You can make better at home with a pre-boxed cake mix. As I mentioned before though, I'm a bit of a pastry snob. So I judge harsher than others. This place is just great for treats for the kiddies, or for a nice cake for grandpa's birthday. They do a great job decorating and I love the cookies they make for the holidays! So cute! But for your foodie friends, go elsewhere. A tip I will mention about the location, you have to make a very tight and fast turn off Waukegan road to get into their lot. Be careful when walking in the lot, especially near the road. AMAZING BAKERY, TERRIBLE SERVICE. Sadly, I've experienced this every time I come here. We could be the only ones in the building and the cash register people still look past me blankly, or pretend to be busy, or walk away as I'm heading up to pay. For me, the service is a deal breaker. If you want good service, go to their Buffalo Grove location. Over there, they got it right, and they have a drive thru! But, the bakery products are unbeatable. Outstanding cakes and pastries - try one and you'll never buy cake at a grocery store again. To me the supersugar icing and spongy cake of grocery store cakes reminds me of an inside-out Twinkie. I know some people like Twinkies, but I'd rather leave them for the post-apocalypse cockroaches to dine upon. When you have a Deerfield's cake, the real buttercream icing gives you the first indication that this cake wasn't bought at a grocery store. The light, fluffy, melt-away interior convinces you that this cake was worth $15. The cakes are located at the left end of the front case and in refrigerated cases in the back. I recommend bypassing the simple yellow cakes in the right hand case and exploring some of the beautiful creations to the left or in the front case. I brought their Bailey's Irish Cream cake to a dinner I attended on Saturday and 5 of us nearly ate the whole thing. Mmmmmm. read more

My mom grew up in Riverwoods and attended Holy Cross Church (across the street) as a kid. Needless to say, my mom and her siblings would often sneak out of church and run over to Deerfield's to stuff their faces with delicious baked goods before my grandma noticed (there were 9 kids- they often got away with this). Flash forward to a few years ago when my mom moved back to Deerfield to take care of my grandparents. Deerfield's Bakery is a few blocks' walk from the house and we have all become (re-)acquainted with it's awesomeness. The doughnuts are amazing and fresh. The chocolate coffecake is perfect- this is what I pick up to bring over to my mom's house if we get together for a family brunch. They have a million varieties of decorated sugar cookies that we often bring to different parties or special events. The variety of baked goods available is dizzying to a sugarholic like myself and I always leave with a satisfied sweet tooth. They now carry bacon doughnuts (which I discovered in Portland and have been fascinated by ever since) and as my brother and cousin have reported, they are salty-sweetly perfect. The customer service is so uncaring it made my mother- in-law CRY on her 50th wedding anniversary! She went to pick up a cake after she had made a special trip to the bakery to discuss her order. She was told it was banana-creme (which she hates) frosting. She was upset and the sales associate's attitude was not helpful and frankly quite just cold. Excellent coffee cakes (my favorites are the cheese and the cherry!). Very good donuts. I purchased a birthday cake there last weekend. Moist, tasty, and ready on time. They lose a star for the hoops you have to jump through when the store is busy. Nothing seemed easy last weekend. But, it's largely because of the volume of business they do. I won't expect to be recognized or helped out in any special way here. But that's just how it goes sometimes. read more
