Place is small, so with the pandemic, maybe only two people inside limit - one paying and one picking out their goods. Music is a bit loud but that's to be expected; I was still able to get some work done with headphones. The espresso itself was fantastic. Really smooth and flavorful. Plus they do it right and serve with sparkling water and a small nib of extra dark chocolate. If I lived in the are this would 100% be my go-to working cafe and I recommend stopping in if you get the chance.

Recently, we had ordered a small cake from the Deerfields Bakery in Buffalo Grove, and really loved it.   A few days ago, while I was in the Deerfield area, I decided to stop by the Deerfield location for the first time in at least five or six years. This bakery has gone through a nice renovation. It is clean, bright, modern, and pleasant, just like the one in Buffalo Grove, except that it is a lot smaller.  Since it was after 4:00 pm when I went, within an hour of closing, some of the shelves were already empty, which is understandable and probably a good sign for the business. Out of nostalgia, I purchased a big smiley face cookie for $3.95.   The girl who helped me was very polite and friendly even though I was just purchasing one cookie.  That made the visit even more pleasant.  However, I would likely get some other baked goods instead next time, as this cookie and its icing were quite hard, and just tasted like a lot of sugar. I am deducting one star mostly because of the parking situation.  There are only four parking spaces by the building, once these spaces are occupied, customers have to walk to the parking lot in the back that's diagonal from the bakery, and cross a busy driveway shared with a bank.  This can be especially inconvenient when carrying a cake. Since the Buffalo Grove location is much larger and has its own parking lot that makes parking easy, I will most likely continue going to the Buffalo Grove location unless I happen to be in the Deerfield area.

The signature chocolate donut barely tastes like chocolate anymore, and whatever chocolate is there feels cheaper and thinner than it used to be. The birthday cake donut? Honestly tasted like an Entenmann's donut--fine, but nothing special and definitely not bakery-worthy. The prices are still decent, but I'd gladly pay a little more if it meant bringing back the old recipes and higher-quality ingredients. This place built its reputation on standout baked goods, and right now the donuts just aren't living up to that legacy.

After looking for a donut shop other than Dunkin Donuts, Joe Donut popped up in my Google search. I ordered a chocolate glazed red velvet, which was surprisingly good. I also ordered an Oreo crumbled glazed donut. Because it was large and there was glaze and Oreo crumble, I ate it in two settings. I don't know if the Glenview location is a bakery or a bake shop, possibly getting donuts in daily from a bakery location. The donuts were fresh but there seemingly was a limited supply when I went. And I went around 8:45 AM. It may have been that the commuter crowd had bought most of what was available. The location is at a train stop. Nevertheless, if I'm near Glenview and have a taste for donuts, I'II stop by Joe Donut again.

We intended to enjoy our findings at home, but once we smelled the donuts and felt their warmth it was over with - we couldn't wait. I'm not sure anything beats doughy fresh donuts. Out of all the flavors, I enjoyed the classic cinnamon sugar but I was surprised by how much I liked the strawberry shortcake. I couldn't help but to think these are the perfect items to bring to the office or event. Not only are they absolutely delicious, but the portion sizes are much more practical in a sharable setting than regular size donuts.
