Picked Tom's Pastry as my turn around point for my bike ride. It's a small shop that indeed has Mexican pastries at its core but strong donuts too. I grabbed a choc/vanilla frosted yeast-raised and a choc frosted frycake. Both were top notch - yeast-raised was moist (and the frosting was fresh with give so that it didn't all fall off with one bite). The frycake - good chocolate flavor in the glaze (like the other donut) and the cake - crispy outside, but light inside. Place is small, so with the pandemic, maybe only two people inside limit - one paying and one picking out their goods. This is a little Mexican Ma&Pa donut shop. In fact, it's grandma and grandpa, as they had their 1 year old grand-son helping out today! We were in the area and dropped in to pick up a sampling. There wasn't a huge selection left at noon on this Wednesday, but prices are nice and economical. Our selections will make for a nice dessert treat for ourselves and our own 'lil grand-darlings. read more

I love Tom's. It's been a really long time since I've been here on a Sunday, because my kids are obsessed with Dunkin' Donuts...they're 13. On our Sunday donut run to the *other* place, I made sure to drop by Tom's, because I was yearning for one of their classic chocolate donuts. If you're a fan of Dinkel's donuts, this is the closest I've had to their chocolate donut. The anatomy of a Tom's chocolate donut: * Hand-dipped chocolate donut made in the back * Crispy outside * Melt-in-your-mouth inside * Not too dense, and a little light * Delicious! Small shop with Mexican pastries. Today's discovery (darn I left my phone in the car) sugar skulls! $3 for a small size. SUPER COOL! Now you'll have to go back just to see the skulls! There are no longer doughnuts here as advertised. Looks like a nice Mexican bakery, but not what we were craving.

I love donuts and have been wanting to try them out and finally did! Sooo good! And the price is wonderful! We picked them up around 730am and they were still warm! So far have tried the yeast/fluffy donuts; nice and light. The glaze and chocolate is just sweet enough. The cinnamon roll is good. Could be a little more cinnamon and sticky, but overall it's nice. It's not heavy. The Boston cream filling is nice and smooth. It doesn't leave that funky after taste some do. Tried the jelly from the jelly donut and not sure what it is, seems like a cross between raspberry and strawberry. Whatever it is, it's great! Also got an Apple fritter, a cake to try later. Best kept secret in highwood! If you like donuts you need to check them out! They also have other pastries and I can't wait to try those. Homemade, handmade excellent quality donuts . The texture is unbelievably fluffy and crispy in the right spots. Not super sweet like Krispy Kreme or mass produced with cheap ingredients like dunkin donuts .. It's not cute. It's not large. It's tardis-like. There's a small front room for stacked trays of delicious baked goods. The Dr. Who tardis area has to be the back bakery--so much delight pouring into the front room. I had a very flaky, strawberry cheese turnover--couldn't think of a better one. It's easy to pull into the ample parking lot, get your treat(s) and leave--but only after a friendly smile from the cashier. read more

Was bored, started looking up donut places near by found this gem on yelp! A solid 4.5 stars here. I came by 8:30am on a Friday and they still have a ton of variety of donuts. The woman in the shop was super kind and friendly, I ordered a dozen donuts. Some were cake, some yeast, all very good. I took half a star off because the apple fritter didn't have much apple pieces which I love and was greasy in some of the end bits around the end. However the donuts here are all fresh and taste that way... def no stale donuts here, as they make them every morning and once they run out they are out. I love bakeries like that. Nothing fancy here just good ol' fresh homemade donuts. Worth checking out if your in the area in the morning. read more

Just found this local gem located in between Highwood and lake forest right off of Sheridan Rd. The donuts here are soooo amazing and the prices are very reasonable. Since it was just me I didn't want to go too nuts with the amount of doughnuts I purchased, so I got a Boston cream, glazed and an apple fritter. Just loved them as they were not greasy or heavy and the Boston cream actually had a lot of custard in it! Don't you hate it when you get a cream doughnut and there is barely any in it? I do! Besides doughnuts they also have a great selection of Mexican pastries which looked very good. Perhaps next time I will give them a whirl. As a warning, make sure to bring cash. They do not accept credit/debit cards. Additionally, get there early. This place is very popular with the local community so I would bet they run out quickly. read more

Yeah, I'm going to be the turd who shrugs at a hard-working small business that everybody else loves. I'm at peace with it. The doughnuts are decent, possibly good, definitely not great. I tried the apple fritter per my usual...in fact, I came here solely to try the apple fritter, and it was merely so-so. My main criticisms are the lack of apples (there were none) and cinnamon/spice flavor. However, the fritter had a nice exterior crust that is rarely achieved, as well as the perfect level of sugar. I liked my other selection more, the coconut cake doughnut. They use a lot of glaze on the outside, but the cake itself was very nice. I was surprised by and disappointed with the narrow selection at 7:30 on a Friday morning; perhaps they do more business later in the day or on the weekends? A woman in front of me was getting a dozen and had only about five or six varieties from which to choose. On the plus side, the two items together plus tax cost me only $1.84. read more

Stopped in on a whim to see what they had. Nice selection of Mexican pastries. Ended up purchasing a chocolate covered donut and a raspberry and cheese filled turnover. Great donuts!! I read about this place on Yelp and I decided to stop by for some donuts for my dad. The woman was very friendly and helpful. There were all sorts of pastries inside, but we only went for the donuts. The donuts were on a cooling rack and she gave us tongs and a tray to pick out our donuts with. We bought 7 large donuts for $4.99. We took them home and ate a couple right away. The glazed was fantastic. My father really enjoyed his choice of custard filled. The donuts are not very fancy. There were no bacon topped donuts or crazy flavors. They were, however, good donuts from an independent business. Next time I'll try their specialty pastries. What you see is what you get. They don't have a huge selection but everything I've had here has been good. It is a self- serve traditional Mexican bakery. The conca rolls are always fresh, sometimes they even have churros! There are no prices posted but every time I go in I walk out with a bag full of goodies for under $5.
