This is a little Mexican Ma&Pa donut shop. In fact, it's grandma and grandpa, as they had their 1 year old grand-son helping out today! We were in the area and dropped in to pick up a sampling. There wasn't a huge selection left at noon on this Wednesday, but prices are nice and economical. Our selections will make for a nice dessert treat for ourselves and our own 'lil grand-darlings.

I love Tom's. It's been a really long time since I've been here on a Sunday, because my kids are obsessed with Dunkin' Donuts...they're 13. On our Sunday donut run to the *other* place, I made sure to drop by Tom's, because I was yearning for one of their classic chocolate donuts. If you're a fan of Dinkel's donuts, this is the closest I've had to their chocolate donut. The anatomy of a Tom's chocolate donut: * Hand-dipped chocolate donut made in the back * Crispy outside * Melt-in-your-mouth inside * Not too dense, and a little light * Delicious! Small shop with Mexican pastries. Today's discovery (darn I left my phone in the car) sugar skulls! $3 for a small size. SUPER COOL! Now you'll have to go back just to see the skulls! Nice to be back.

I love donuts and have been wanting to try them out and finally did! Sooo good! And the price is wonderful! We picked them up around 730am and they were still warm! So far have tried the yeast/fluffy donuts; nice and light. The glaze and chocolate is just sweet enough. The cinnamon roll is good. Could be a little more cinnamon and sticky, but overall it's nice. It's not heavy. The Boston cream filling is nice and smooth. It doesn't leave that funky after taste some do. Tried the jelly from the jelly donut and not sure what it is, seems like a cross between raspberry and strawberry. Whatever it is, it's great! Also got an Apple fritter, a cake to try later. Best kept secret in highwood! If you like donuts you need to check them out! They also have other pastries and I can't wait to try those. You get a platter and tongs and you pick out what you want.

Their donuts are very fluffy and delicious!!!!! I love this place. Only thing is, cash and check only. No credit cards!

I loved the cake donuts!

I came here just for donuts and am pleased! I'm excited to share them. I got 14 donuts for $10.32, I think you pay price per ounce of donuts. Donuts are really fresh. You pick then yourself with tongs and put them on a tray- and the cashier puts em in a box for you. Cash or check only. I would come back!

Boston cream doughnut! Very yummy.

Just found this local gem located in between Highwood and lake forest right off of Sheridan Rd. The donuts here are soooo amazing and the prices are very reasonable. Since it was just me I didn't want to go too nuts with the amount of doughnuts I purchased, so I got a Boston cream, glazed and an apple fritter. Just loved them as they were not greasy or heavy and the Boston cream actually had a lot of custard in it! Don't you hate it when you get a cream doughnut and there is barely any in it? I do! Besides doughnuts they also have a great selection of Mexican pastries which looked very good. Perhaps next time I will give them a whirl. As a warning, make sure to bring cash. They do not accept credit/debit cards. Additionally, get there early. This place is very popular with the local community so I would bet they run out quickly.

Nice guy, little hole in the wall type shop. Not much selection. Got a few Mexican breads. Not very compelling to go to or return to.

There are no longer doughnuts here as advertised. Looks like a nice Mexican bakery, but not what we were craving.

Go early so you have the best selection of donuts. They are well priced and fresh. What else could you want?

Fantastic pastries for a fantastic price. My favorites are the Boston Creme donuts and a dense cake that I don't even know the name of.

Super light and delicious yeast donuts that are always fresh. A baker's dozen for $7.99?! Can't beat that!

I had a Caesar salad, my wife has the French onion soup and a grilled cheese and all items were solid. Also had the Chocolate chip cookies which were awesome. They have a ton of pastries that I look forward to trying down the line as well. Would definitely recommend.

I ordered the croque madame with the fried egg on top, and it was delicious. You can absolutely tell they use real butter--the true French way! My waistline might not thank them, but my tastebuds certainly did. I even brought home an almond croissant for the Hubby and snacked on a cheese and chive scone the next day, and everything was just fantastic. The only little hiccup is that the service can get a bit hectic. The staff seemed a little confused trying to match up the order numbers to the tables, and we almost got run over on our way out by a waiter sprinting to the patio! But even with the fast-paced environment, the food is wonderful whether you eat in or grab takeout. Definitely worth a visit! A much better experience here than MY 1st time. I think it's because they enlarged the dining area with more table space. It's still hard to have a conversation due to the high ceilings which echo the sound.

Recently, we had ordered a small cake from the Deerfields Bakery in Buffalo Grove, and really loved it.   A few days ago, while I was in the Deerfield area, I decided to stop by the Deerfield location for the first time in at least five or six years. This bakery has gone through a nice renovation. It is clean, bright, modern, and pleasant, just like the one in Buffalo Grove, except that it is a lot smaller.  Since it was after 4:00 pm when I went, within an hour of closing, some of the shelves were already empty, which is understandable and probably a good sign for the business. Out of nostalgia, I purchased a big smiley face cookie for $3.95.   The girl who helped me was very polite and friendly even though I was just purchasing one cookie.  That made the visit even more pleasant.  However, I would likely get some other baked goods instead next time, as this cookie and its icing were quite hard, and just tasted like a lot of sugar. I am deducting one star mostly because of the parking situation.  There are only four parking spaces by the building, once these spaces are occupied, customers have to walk to the parking lot in the back that's diagonal from the bakery, and cross a busy driveway shared with a bank.  This can be especially inconvenient when carrying a cake. Since the Buffalo Grove location is much larger and has its own parking lot that makes parking easy, I will most likely continue going to the Buffalo Grove location unless I happen to be in the Deerfield area.
