We used to order a lot of birthday cakes from this Deerfields Bakery.  They always did an excellent job.  Our daughter's favorite customized cake was an 8" to 10" chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream filling, and chocolate whipped cream frosting, which was huge, rich, and delicious.  Ever since she was little, it also became a tradition to pick up a big smiley face cookie for her whenever we picked up a cake. Recently, we had ordered a small cake from the Deerfields Bakery in Buffalo Grove, and really loved it.   A few days ago, while I was in the Deerfield area, I decided to stop by the Deerfield location for the first time in at least five or six years. This bakery has gone through a nice renovation. It is clean, bright, modern, and pleasant, just like the one in Buffalo Grove, except that it is a lot smaller.  Since it was after 4:00 pm when I went, within an hour of closing, some of the shelves were already empty, which is understandable and probably a good sign for the business. Out of nostalgia, I purchased a big smiley face cookie for $3.95.   The girl who helped me was very polite and friendly even though I was just purchasing one cookie.  That made the visit even more pleasant.  However, I would likely get some other baked goods instead next time, as this cookie and its icing were quite hard, and just tasted like a lot of sugar. I am deducting one star mostly because of the parking situation.  There are only four parking spaces by the building, once these spaces are occupied, customers have to walk to the parking lot in the back that's diagonal from the bakery, and cross a busy driveway shared with a bank.  This can be especially inconvenient when carrying a cake. Since the Buffalo Grove location is much larger and has its own parking lot that makes parking easy, I will most likely continue going to the Buffalo Grove location unless I happen to be in the Deerfield area. read more

Our wedding cake from Deerfields Bakery turned out incredibly delicious! We received many compliments. The design was exactly like what we asked for. We had one minor miscommunication regarding the wedding cake topper which is why I cannot rate 5/5 stars. Both my mother in law and I contacted the bakery on separate occasions about the cake topper and we were instructed to drop the cake topper off at the bakery a couple of weeks before the wedding. On the day of the wedding, our cake arrived without the cake topper. When I spoke with the bakery they told me that they normally do not place toppers. I've been going to Deerfield Bakery for over 20 years, which is why this is disappointing to write. The donut quality has clearly gone downhill. The signature chocolate donut barely tastes like chocolate anymore, and whatever chocolate is there feels cheaper and thinner than it used to be. The birthday cake donut? Honestly tasted like an Entenmann's donut--fine, but nothing special and definitely not bakery-worthy. The prices are still decent, but I'd gladly pay a little more if it meant bringing back the old recipes and higher-quality ingredients. This place built its reputation on standout baked goods, and right now the donuts just aren't living up to that legacy. read more

Pains me to write this review but I think the quality at Deerfield's bakery has gone down hill. I ordered decorated sugar cookies for my birthday, which were supposed to look like espresso martinis and say "a tini bit older." A few days before I was supposed to pick them up, the decorator said they weren't able to write on the cookies even though they used to be able to and on their website they advertise cookies with phrases on them. I picked up this box of cookies which genuinely looked more like medieval goblets than espresso martinis. Like zero decoration to make it look like an espresso martini. Oh well I had to DIY decorate them (see photo with icing - that's more like what I wanted!) Oh the cookie was also disappointing & not at all as tasty as I remember :( read more

Deerfields Bakery is one of my favorites in the suburbs. Although I don't go here or to their Buffalo Grove location frequently, whenever I go, I have gotten good, delicious pastries and received nice service. At this Deerfields, which is a much smaller establishment compared to their Buffalo Grove location, you will find a wonderful variety of cake slices, cookies, donuts, and more. The few times I have been here, I have always seen it busy. Most of the time, I get a few assorted donuts and a couple of cookies and, on some occasions, cake or cake slices as well. The quality of these pastries is always on point, and depending on what we like and get, the flavors of those items are usually good and to our liking. Deerfields is definitely a bakery worth checking out. Yes, they are on the pricey side, but their baked goods quality and flavor are of premium kind! I would recommend trying their mapke bacon Long John, cream-filled donuts variety, cake slices of Pistachio & Strawberry mousse, and Pomegranate Pistachio Mousse, etc. All of it do scrumptious and indulgent. read more

Skip this place if you're after fresh pastries or bread items. Everything consistently tastes like it was baked days ago, or that it was made somewhere far away and shipped in to be sold days later. Dry and stale without exception, and definitely worth knowing before you order. It's also very expensive. If I'm paying top dollar I'm expecting quality fresh items. When I was a kid this is where everyone always got their birthday cakes. This business is seasoned, as in it's been here forever and is familiar and comfortable, but they've also kept up with times. Growing up, a dozen donuts was an occasional (and dependably good) treat over a weekend when guests were visiting. They have excellent donuts and that's probably my favorite item here. Dad's was red velvet cake. Funny story: I was an unusually tall child, so I always got pressured into playing sports when I didn't really want to, especially basketball. The summer before 7th grade I was talked into signing up for summer basketball camp. Red velvet cake is one of those dessert choices that I could walk by and completely ignore (along with pretty much all cakes, cookies, donuts, brownies, and pastry). I have seen it on countless occasions at family gatherings, and it's commonly linked to Juneteenth, a holiday I always celebrate. But it's just not something I want to eat. I'm indifferent to baked desserts and prefer candy. However, recently I was offered cake slices from a couple bakeries, and this location was one of them. I did not visit the bakery, so I cannot speak to the service. What I can say is I demolished this red velvet cake. I not only demolished it, but I wiped the container to eat all the icing. I've been a patron of Deerfield's Bakery for 20 years at least! I used to work in the area and would frequently buy their frosted sugar cookies. I moved to the city 10 years ago, but will still take a drive to Deerfield!'s Bakery for the frosted sugar cookies. Today I made a special stop there before meeting my daughter who said she had a craving for one of the cookies. I got there right when they opened at 7 am. I bought 5 cookies for $21. I presented them to my daughter, she happily takes a bite and we all hear the audible CRUNCH as the frosting breaks apart crumbling all over. The cookie itself was extremely dry and flavorless. I called later to complain and was not offered my money back but was told that the cookies were checked daily. I said I wanted my money back and they told me they would have customer service call me tomorrow. I'm writing this review because it's not about the money, it's about being disappointed in a cookie that used to be so good. Does anybody care about quality anymore?! One of the great joys in my life is breakfast, and few do it better than Deerfields Bakery. Deerfields Bakery catered in breakfast at my husband's office for a meeting and I was the ultimate beneficiary. He brought home a tray of French toast, breakfast potatoes, and breakfast sausages. They reheated great. It tasted like I was in heaven. We froze what we couldn't eat that night. While initially pricey, the quality is definitely there and the baked goods we purchased tasted incredible and fresh. We ordered one box of butter cookies which we both loved. The cookie box had a good variety of flavors and textures. They definitely delivered in the butter department and were delicious. Many cookies in the box we received were broken which was a let down for photos, however broken cookies still taste yummy! The 6 inch cake we received appeared to be on the small side, but we knew what we were ordering in terms of size and price. Nonetheless, that 6 inch cake was truly all we needed to serve our party size. The cake looked gorgeous and tasted amazing. Each layer of cake was super dense in a good way. The strawberries were flavorful and the custard and cream were both adequate and very filling. You only need just a bit of cake to be happy and full! Walking through the bakery to pick up this cake, there was ample amount of baked goods to grab last minute, including beautifully decorated sugar cookies and cakes. We will definitely be returning for the next birthday or special occasion to splurge on something beautiful and sweet! read more

Horrible customer service . Disappointed in a custom cake we ordered . 2 managers wouldn't help us , were told owners would not speak to customers . The cake looked like a Pinterest fail cake . Manager was supposed to call me back after he spoke to owners . 24 hours later he never returned my call - he claimed he was too busy . Deerfield bakery is supposedly known for their cakes . Should have gone to jewel to buy a cake it would have looked better and probably tasted better . Our family will never return . Ordered a birthday cake from this bakery but I had never tried their pastries before. I would highly recommend trying a slice before committing to a full cake. I like that they have a variety of treats but I was not blown away by the cake I got. The fruit was not super fresh and overall there was no flavor. The ratio of cream/frosting to cake was off as there was so much cream and not a lot of sponge. I also thought it was ridiculous that they wanted to charge extra $60 just to add 2 little mushrooms on the top. The bakery is cute but service could be better.
