I've ordered my Thanksgiving pies from Deerfield's Bakery for years. This year I ordered a pecan and cherry. The pecan was inedible and the cherry was so-so.. Nothing special and certainly not what I'm used to getting from this well-respected bakery. The pecan pie was incredibly dry. So dry that it could not be cut into individual pieces. Maybe it had been in the freezer for an extended period of time? I was so disappointed that I will be getting all future pies down the street from Whole Foods at about half the price. I've always been willing to pay extra for quality pies, so it's incredibly disappointing when this happens. With that said, the service and team have always been excellent. Super nice and efficient. Just not sure what happened this year to the quality of the pies. read more

Everything I have ever purchased from here has exceeded my expectations and when I bring donuts to work, everyone raves how good they are. Other than sub par chain donut places in the city, there are almost none that I know of in the NW side of Chicago that are as good as Deerfield's. Just not a fan, unfortunately. My petit four was the worst one I've ever had. Cake was hard and staling, and I could barely taste the almond flavor. The white coating was really hard too, and it was just a waste of calories. I should earn negative calories for that. I was also expecting a thin layer of frosting or fruit jam inside (like other petit fours I've had), but it was just a chunk of cake. (Go to Bennison's for gold standard petit fours!) The cupcakes were subpar. Strawberry just tasted like white cake dyed bright pink, and the jumbo raspberry filled one was not memorable. Jam was kind of chunky too. Snickers looked tasty: chocolate cake with chocolate icing and mini Snickers chunks on top. Ratio of icing to cake was too high though. All cupcakes had cloyingly sweet icing. I did like that they have mini sweet rolls and danishes for less than a dollar. The mini Bavarian cream donut had fresh cream in a fresh yeast donut, but the chocolate icing was heavy on the sugar. As "pie," the item was fine. However, I paid nearly $20 for a CHERRY pie that, when ordered, I noted was for my aging mother's birthday. It was the only request she had, and so I tried to make it special by ordering from Deerfield's Bakery rather than picking up something at a local grocery store for half the price. Alas, I received an APPLE pie (photos attached) that had what appeared as canned cherry filling dabbed in the center of the pie. It wasn't a cherry pie. It was an apple pie with a touch of cherry. There was zero request for apple---I ordered a cherry pie with a lattice top as the receipt verified. She didn't want an apple pie, I didn't order an apple pie, and I was disappointed in the experience. If they didn't have cherries to make cherry pie, I should have been notified as I had ordered the pie nearly a WEEK before pick-up. Just stopped in today to pick up a birthday cake for my daughter. Nick and Jenna were incredible with the customer service they provided. They went out of there way to make the cakes (yup bought 2 lol) look great, I got 1 for today and 1 for the weekend when guest come over. Thank you for the wonderful service! I stopped in today for a cookie for each of my kids, as we do sometimes after school and Aryssa who checked us out went above and beyond. See my daughter dropped her cookie or her brother licked her's or something along those lines so she began to cry... without any asking Aryssa offered her a new cookie free of charge. Congrats on the fiftieth anniversary and remodel! Although we were too late to get a free slice of cake to celebrate, the staff was great, the new space is open and welcoming, and the treats were super tasty. Even though we'd come at the end of the day, the pastries tasted fresh. We even saved some for the next day! If you haven't been to Deerfield's in a while, do yourself a favor and stop by. Incredible changes to recipes have resulted in absolutely delicious pastries, muffins, cakes. The new pastries are made from a croissant dough, buttery, light, melt in your mouth. Tried a new doughnut made of croissant dough, filled with pistachio cream and glazed with pistachio frosting. Ordered a birthday cake for my wife. Asked that they add Happy Birthday to the cake with a yellow background on top of the cake. When I opened the cake just before serving, the Happy Birthday notice was not there. They screwed up big time and even giving my money back would not make me feel better. This is a screwed up bakery that does not know how to take an order correctly and add a Happy Birthday to a premade cake.. I will never shop there again and if you do, check the goods. For many years this was my go to bakery; they had wonderful Napoleons and other pastries second only to Lutz's (distant second) coffee cakes and my favorite cake, Grand Marnier chocolate. Years ago the Napoleons and other pastries got much smaller, and the cakes got more expensive. Sunday I stopped in: no Napoleons but enormous pastries 6 for $6? I bought the unnecessary pastries and asked about the Grand Marnier cake only to be told that it had been discontinued several years ago. I don't know what's happening with Deerfield's (market pressures from the grocery stores probably) but it's depressing. read more

It seems Deerfields is slowly spinning the drain. This updated review is about the cupcakes and cakes. I've always put up with the lousy and weird service at Deerfields because the cakes are awesome. Moist. Juicy. And the icing is to die for. But it seems there's been a change in recipes for the icing. Or something was off. I got a birthday cake for my hubby and we both recognized something tasted different. The icing didn't have the whipped decadent we've come to expect. Perhaps they've gone to a cheaper version or it was an off day. I don't know. I just know the quality wasn't there. The service is always off -- there's no clear line, you wait by the bakery back room to get your cake. Things are discombobulated (aren't you impressed by my big words?). I think it's time for me to try a new place. When I hear on Yelp that things are turning around I'll try them again. read more

I love birthdays, mostly because it's a an excuse to get a cake from Deerfield Bakery! I was a fan even when I lived in the city (hence the review way back in 2010), but for my kid's recent birthday I was psyched that Deerfields Bakery was just a short drive away. My social media savvy 3 year old had been playing on pinterest for months looking for the perfect Cinderella birthday cake. She was all about the Cinderella doll cake where the dress is actually made out of cake. And since I always wanted one of those as a little girl I obliged. And she decided on a mickey mouse smash cake for her brother, who hasn't quite figured out how to use pinterest at 1 yrs old. Maybe next year! I ordered at the bakery rather than call online since: a) I had to bring them a cinderella barbie doll for the cake b) great opportunity to sample some deliciousness The woman who took my order was extremely helpful and patient. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted the Mickey Mouse smash cake to look like so we played around on pinterest together, which I'm sure the few people behind me loved. I ordered a week before the party, but I believe they just need 2 days. I would have preferred to have the cakes delivered, but unfortunately they only give you a few hour window and feared my cakes would be late. I sent my husband the morning of the party and he almost passed out when he saw the Cinderella cake that may have been larger than our wedding cake. I had expected it to feed about 80 people, but based on the amount of cake I brought home after the party think it could have fed about 800 people. Oh well- more leftovers for me! The cakes were gorgeous and beyond tasty. I had at least 20 people come up to me during the party to ask where they were from. And when I mentioned Deerfield the response was always "of course. I came in here with several coworkers and a herd of rowdy middle school students at 5:30pm on a Tuesday evening. The store was quiet and nearly all the shelves were empty except for a few items. Strange. After observing us wandering around for a few moments, one woman behind the counter asked, "What's going on? Do you need something?" "We're here to buy some things. Where are all your baked goods?" I was confused. She responded with annoyance, "Uh, we're closed in one minute." Ah, we had unknowingly arrived at closing time. We didn't realize this, and I really wish the employees would have been a lot nicer about it. I also know that coming in with ten loud kids is a bit overwhelming, but there are several other ways to handle it than rolling your eyes at us and not giving us many smiles. We rushed our students to pick out some treats, paid, and left in a hurry. I'm sure they were glad to see us go. But you know what? I'm not coming back. I didn't appreciate their annoyance (although I am sorry we were loud and came in at closing time) and their doughnuts were nothing to write home about anyway. read more

Been hearing about this place over the years from family and friends and finally decided to drop by because I was in the area. I was surprised how big the bakery is and how much variety they have. Make sure to bring cash they charge more for credit card, 2.5%. The staff wasn't the friendliest and we were not greeted when we walked in. There is a parking lot in the back. One thing I didn't like about the bakery was that everything was out in the open. What if someone touches something or sneezes on it accidentally? Most bakeries I've been to would have the food covered up or behind a counter. We opted for the cheese strudel. It tastes decent but nothing crazy to write about. I think they are also known for their cookie trays. The first time I had Deerfields was at my family's house eating it from a cookie tray. The place is great for the area but don't make a special trip if you are 30 minutes or further out. read more

The original Deerfield's Bakery (with a location in Buffalo Grove and Schaumburg) serves a nice assortment of donuts, muffins, cupcakes, danishes, cakes, cookies, etc. Situated in downtown Deerfield, this bakery can be hard to spot off of Waukegan Rd but is worth finding if you're looking for quality baked goods in Deerfield. For me, there are plenty of sweet options available but I think where Deerfields truly excels is actually their breads and bagels. They offer a wide variety of options, with a variety of textures without having to travel as far as Breadsmith (and I think it's a little better than Panera's bread). The sweet options are also fairly good here, although I'm a fan of some options more than others. I feel that options that depend on fresh fruit, nuts, or butter for flavor definitely taste better than the other options -- hence why I prefer croissants and turnovers to donuts and sweet rolls. But whatever you get, the options are all attractively presented (particularly cakes and cupcakes) and delicious. If you're in Deerfield, this is the place to go for fine pastries at very reasonable prices. read more
