I've been going to Deerfield bakery since I was 5 years old. I would walk up town to the bakery in the morning with my dad as a kid. Well worth the trip! The fresh donuts are simply the best and freshest around. My favorite is the Bavarian creme-filled Bismark! The cookies, eclairs, coffee cake's are master-class! I am new to the area and Deerfield Bakery had been highlyh recommended. I was in your Deerfield store at 10 a.m. today (3/14/14). While I was picking out coffee cakes, a nice customer said I should get a card and start accruing oints. The line was long at the (single) check out line and when it was my turn, I asked about the point system. I was told I had to register on line. When I tried to register at home, your site said I needed a card which no one at your store offered. Long story short, train you staff. Also to have only a single check out line open with staff standiing around does not leave a good impression. At least build a small counter so people can put their purchases down while waiting for check out. One lady behind me was trying to balance a cake and other purcheses and she did not looi happy. I grew up in Deerfield and recently moved back to the area from the city. I remember what a treat it was heading here in my early years, and now that I have little ones of my own, I love the look on their faces when I say we are going to Deerfields. I recently ordered a custom cake for my sons baptism. I had a very specific design request and was very satisfied to see exactly what I wanted when I picked the cake up. I also purchased cupcakes recently and loved the "big cupcake" or mini cake, perfect for a smash cake for a first birthday! I'm surprised to see all the negative reviews on service. Their "peanut-free" advertising is totally misleading. One of the representatives at the Schaumburg location claimed that there may be cross-contamination on everything that is made at the bakery. If your business can't guarantee peanut-free products, stop mislabeling your website and take your signs down at your stores. Very disappointing. read more

The great tasting bakery goods are overshadowed by the rude, mean staff, especially the older woman who usually is at checkout. It would be one thing if I was there only one time and she was just having a bad day, but on subsequent trips she is just as rude and nasty to me. I thought it was just me, but she's like that with everyone. Hire some nicer people at the Deerfield location please or make your employees take a customer service seminar. This place is no longer what it used to be. Their donuts and sweet rolls are hard and dried out and when i look at the workers they appear to be sloppy and non caring. The frosting now looks fake and thrown on. Gross! The cupcakes are dry and hard as though they had been sitting there for at least a week. Expect bad service and for some staff to act rudely. The cashier who handles money all day touched my cupcakes (actually picked them up by the frosting) to transfer them to another box! I was completely disgusted! When I asked for different cupcakes that weren't handled by the cashier, I was asked for payment on the new cupcakes (I had already paid for the other cupcakes in full...what?)! This place has good baked goods (hence the two stars), but unfortunately the service (both unfriendly on many occasions and unsanitary) just makes me want to stay away from this place! Ordered 2 cakes from Deerfield's bakery for my daughters birthday. Spent about 45 minutes placing orders and working with 4+ people (not by choice) while each person we worked with was kind I believe this is also the reason for the mistake on our order. Both cakes were supposed to be ready on the same day to eliminate driving there twice. Thank GOD the cake for Saturday was done and perfect. The second cake was no where to be found. No cake was ever made. After 45 minutes if multiple people trying to find out what happened to the cake they decided they would just make another one for me to pick up the next day (the very thing I was trying to avoid.) Working in client service I find it important to be apologetic when necessary(which they were) and right the wrong (which they semi did) I was a first time customer to Deerfield's Bakery and while everyone was pleasant I feel completely forgetting to make a cake is a big mistake thankfully my second cake was not as extravagant as my first but a refund or discount or something would have been appreciated. For how well known Deerfield's Bakery is I would have expected a little more on the customers side aside from an "I'm sorry." I don't know if we will be back but I will say my first cake was beautifully made and did taste great. I also appreciated how pleasant everyone was who works there. read more

Delicious, delicious, delicious! We hadn't been back in a number of years and were delighted to find that this bakery was still there. We window shopped at all the beautiful cakes, but only stopped for donuts and coffee. The cinnamon rolls were sumptuous and to my surprise, the coffee was really good - Starbuck's quality. It was the day before Valentine's day and there were a number of specialty items to help celebrate. The cakes were all beautifully decorated. There was a good selection of pastries, cookies and other tempting treats. I am sure glad that we don't live anywhere close to Deerfield or this bakery would account for at least ten pounds per year. read more

I recently ordered a birthday cake for my nephew's 5th birthday. I wasn't going to be able to spend it with him due to the stay-at-home order so I wanted to send something special. I called Amanda at Deerfields Bakery & asked if they could deliver a cake during this pandemic & she said they could. I ordered a chocolate layer cake with buttercream frosting. I asked her if they could decorate it with his name & the #5 on it, & just make it look as special as possible for him. Well, it was the most gorgeous cake that I have ever seen. They decorated it with with "Happy Birthday Logan" & balloons in different colors. In each balloon was a 5. They trimmed it in colored buttercream frosting. The cake looked absolutely fantastic, just amazing. It looked so incredible that I wondered if it was going to taste as great as it looked. Well, it did taste as great as it looked. My nephew & his family said it was moist & delicious, and the frosting was the best. I am so happy that I called them, & ordered from them. They really made it special. One star missing is because their hours are not the greatest. That aside, this place is so delicious. My parents even got their wedding cake from here. Oxymoron: we always went here the day we went to the dentist, because he's right next door. As a little kid waiting for the flouride to set made me so anxious! So this year for my daughters birthday I ordered her cake and cookies from Deerfields Bakery . I gave them a picture of how I wanted the cookies and cake to look, I was worried it wont look right. But can I tell you they master it the cookies and cake look just like the characters I wanted them to look like. The cake was so delicious and the cookies! As mentioned below, I've had not-so-good customer service at this place over the years...but go there despite that for the excellent baked goods. After my bad review below, I got a note from the manager asking me to help pinpoint the problem. I wrote back with some suggestions and he thanked me. Today, I braced myself and went in to get some cookies for a work thing...and was pleasantly greeted upon entry...and asked if I needed help! I had to pay for my items in two transactions and they didn't balk or look annoyed! I'm encouraged that the manager asked for feedback and even more encouraged that they perhaps took it to heart! _________________________________________________ I've been here enough and my most recent experience is very typical. I can boil this down very simply to the following six words. five star food...one star service. Still the worst! Cannot believe people still come to this awful Bakery! They are such Liars! They are trained to say that everything in the bakery was baked fresh this morning. Once again went in 6 months ago and again yesterday. Both times asked when the item was baked both times was told this morning. Got the brownie home I laughed because I was banging it on the counter because it was that hard. Frosting hard as a rock and the brownie even harder. Baked this morning? I don't think so! Six months ago I bought an eclair and the frosting was so stale it literally fell off the top onto the floor as I went to bite into it. And they had told me it was baked that morning. Hands down the best bakery in Chicago. I drive from the city to Deerfield for every special occasion that I need a cake for. I'm a bit surprised by some of the comments as I have only found the staff to be wonderful--friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to go out of their way to accomodate my needs. They have created some amazing cakes for birthday parties for my friends (in the shapes of cowboy foots, wine bottles and glasses) and they are always as delicious as they are gorgeous. The whole 3 day rule is so unclear and makes dealing with them difficult if they want 96 hours to make a cake then they should say so. If I am calling 3 days before and being told they need 3 full days makes no sense. Their cakes are good but their handling of orders is not clear or accomdating at all. My entire family has been coming here since they opened in the 70s. My mom and dad grew up in Northbrook and they always said there was no better bakery. I tend to agree. All of our celebratory cakes have always been ordered from here and now that I'm older, I always order my pastries/cakes from here. I am willing to drive out of my way (as I no longer live close by) to get the best sweets! They have THE BEST buttercream (not too sweet!)! The quality and service has declined considerably over the last several years. This morning I stopped in to purchase a dozen donuts for my colleagues. When I went to check out, I noticed a sign stating that credit card purchases will be applied a 2.5% service fee. I asked if it applied to debit cards too and was told yes. The only way to avoid this service fee is to pay cash. This is absurd. I just paid $24.55 for a dozen mediocre DONUTS. It makes NO sense to nickle and dime the customer for a 2.5% fee. You're already overcharging me for a below average product that tasted like old oil and looked like a toddler made them. Lovin' Oven offers much tastier donuts and they do the work of packing the box of donuts for you at half the price. The service was also lackluster. Seems like the employees aren't empowered to provide the level of service I would expect from this establishment, customer focused and accommodating. I recently ordered my son's first birthday cake from Deerfield's and it was phenomenal. Everything from the incredibly moist devils food cake to the buttercream filling and the 3D sailboat were amazing. Plus the price was really reasonable for a cake that fed 30-40 people. We loved it and got rave reviews from our guests. Also, I ordered their cookies to use as party favors in the shape of sailboats and anchors. They were so cute and Deerfield's even individually wrapped them and put a favor tag (that I had provided) on each one with coordinating ribbon. The cookies not only looked amazing but they tasted great! I will definitely be returning to Deerfield's for all of my son's future birthday parties! What can I say about Deerfield's Bakery but the BEST- for 30+ years my family and I have been going to Deerfields for an AM doughnut or muffin and sometimes that extra special dessert. I love how the cakes are decorated, and especially how they taste! My sister has been getting her all time favorite cake their for her bday for the past 32 years. I recently went in there to pick up the Queen Elizabeth (her favorite) for her 36 bday and also got 3 cookies for my 2 nephews and niece. First of all I love being in their - the smells and they amazing personalized service. It is that neighborhood staple. Not only was the cake spot on as it is every year and gone in 1 day. I become the super cool aunt and my nephews gobbled their truck cookies, looked at their mom and said "this is my new favorite food- can I have these at my bday party?" Last week we did! As business have been closing down or going down the tubes - Deerfield's is still going strong and tasting better ever day. They now even have gluten free cupcakes which is right up my alley (I am gluten free) and they are amazing Deerfield's thank you for being part of my life and as I like to think I do - we both get better with age!! I've been to many, many bakeries and this is by far the best! The store is very welcoming and very well kept. The employees are always very nice, and helpful. I was recently in to ask some questions about colors for a future cake order to see if they could match a color, and the stores manager was truly helpful, he went above and beyond by bringing me samples of the buttercream! This bakery came highly recommended and did not disappoint! We were greeted promptly and assisted right away with my custom cake order. The lady helping me took the time to explain all options, once the order was complete we went over it together to make sure everything was accurate. Then an email confirmation was sent and the cake paid for. Easy peasy! The day of our celebration we picked up went without any problems.
