Was down to the Kitchener market and thought I'd try the Pho Dau Bo in this location. Ordered the Vietnamese spring roll and a large pho with tendon and brisket. The spring rolls had IMHO a heavy filling and so not the best. Also no salad (pickled diakon, carrot, lettuce) was served with the spring rolls like you get in many other places. The Pho itself was ok but didn't contain any tendon or brisket as ordered, rather it seemed to have been made with flank. Not a terrible disappointment but not really what I ordered. read more

Mmmm - though the portions are relatively small, the food here is very flavourful and delicious! We came here after driving my sister back to her campus hall, and all ordered different things. My sister ordered a large pho with beef stomach and flank. Although the size of the physical bowl containing the noodles was large, the portion itself wasn't that large. It's perhaps comparable to a medium elsewhere. That said, the broth and essence was delicious! The onions were a bit thickly cut, and the broth wasn't too hot, but fortunately the bean sprouts and onion pieces still ended up being fully cooked. I got the tiger shrimp and grilled chicken bun/vermicelli. Half the bowl was loaded with lettuce and bean sprouts (my favourite!) and the peanut pieces were roasted to a great crisp. I particularly enjoyed the sauce! The noodles aren't what you usually expect; rather than a thinner vermicelli, they're slightly thicker (kind of like the lai fun at HK cafés). The chicken was quite dry and shredded beyond recognition, and I was quite surprised to find the shrimp not grilled but sautéed. The protein came with some stir fried onions and topped with a sort of sautéed lemongrass bit... It was tasty, but that wasn't what I was expecting from my grilled chicken at all! My mom got the bun/vermicelli as well, but got stir fried beef with lemongrass. She really enjoyed her dish; the flavours were indeed rich and prominent, and there was a subtle kick of spice added from the lemongrass sauce. Much like the other location at Mississauga that I've been to, Pho Dau Bo offers delicious Pho soup noodles and other Vietnamese and Thai dishes at an affordable price that are sure to fill you up. The price point is roughly $10/person. My go-to order is 342. Pho Dac Biet, which has every kind of beef in the soup. If you wanna get the best value, I would totally recommend you to order an XL size Pho and split it with another friend! Their appetizers aren't very much worth it, so if you want to get something else along with the pho I suggest getting the side orders, where you can get an order of BBQ grilled chicken or pork chop for $3. This place has honestly THE BEST pho I've had in Waterloo! The broth is super flavourful with an intense beef taste, hinted with basil, mint and a kick of lime. I got the House Special (Small) today and it was very filling for me. The price is super reasonable given the portions. One thing to make note of is that they closed at 8pm. Also, parking is kind of hard around that area so you might be doing some circles around the block before you can go eat. This is my family's recent go-to restaurant whenever they come to Waterloo! Their pho is consistently delicious, the broth has the right amount of salt and has very rich, clean flavors. The rice noodles are also cooked perfectly! It makes for a warm hearty meal in this cold weather. I have ordered both beef tendon/raw beef slices and chicken pho, both are excellent! We also get the shrimp rice paper rolls as an appetizer to share. It is wrapped nice and snug so it doesn't come apart when you eat it. The filling is shrimp, vermicelli noodles, lettuce and pork. Let me stop rambling and write something more useful! WRITE YOUR OWN ORDER DOWN on the ticket: I wish someone would've told me how this restaurant operates! The people working there probably thought I was a demeanding American when I flagged one of the servers down to take my order! One would THINK that they take your order, but NO! people, NO! When you walk in and see a ticket on each table and a pen, it's not there for looks! I learned afterwards that you (the customer) are supposed to write down what you want on the ticket, noting any allergies you may have, etc. You write down the number that you want and the quantity. I've never seen this done before ... but once you've written your order down, you can either flag them down and give them the menus or take it up to them. PHO (Rare Steak) - I paid $8.50 CDN to share with a co-worker who had never had pho before. When served, the soup was HOT (temperature hot)! (i like!) Typically, when I have pho, the soups are not as hot as they were served tonight, so I was extremely grateful for that. The noodles were fine -- rice vermicelli, not overly or undercooked. The rare beef was truly thinly sliced. They weren't overly generous with their rare beef, but they weren't stingy either. So, no complaints there. VERMICELLI with grilled pork and spring roll - $7.95 (i think) So, when we ordered from this section, I expected to see this dish served with rice vermicelli (as in the same type of noodles that came with me pho). But I was EXTREMELY surprised when it was server with SPAGHETTI NOODLES. WHAT, What? This is no Italian restaurant!!! This is Vietnamese!!! Spaghetti noodles should not be allowed in Asian restaurants! So, it's because of this that I knocked them down! Watch out people!!! Make sure you don't get stuck with spaghetti noodles! =) Now, I didn't try it, but the grilled pork did look a little dried out. It was served with a BOATLOAD of noodles, though. The ratio between noodles vs. veggies and meat were like 70/30, respectively. Enough on this! The restaurant is not a fancy restaurant, so if you're looking for a romantic, fancy, restaurant, this is definitely not your place. If you're looking for some casual restaurant where you can come with family or friends ... a place with some decent prices for decent food, then this is your place. Favourite restaurant in KW. Absolutely delicious!! Get the pho plain or with veggies/beef, and make sure to put on the basil and lemongrass leaves as well as the hot chili sauce and hoisin sauce they keep on every table (hoisin sauce is in the red bottles). I always get a "craving for pho dao bo" every week and for a while last year I went like twice a week with friends whom I introduced to this place and who love it just as much as I do now:) The singapore vermicelli noodles is sooooooooo good too! The flavour!! As well as the dry noodles bowls with shrimp. Oh yes. Gosh really everything here is the best. BUT you can't go wrong with the original pho. The broth is to DIE FOR. I didn't expect to find this type of authentic Vietnamese food here in Waterloo. This is still not Pho Linh quality - for those of you don't know it has the best Pho Toronto has to offer. Back to Waterloo. I had a grilled chicken with steam eggs and shredded pork on rice, I could taste spices like lemon grass marinated well into the chicken. The steam eggs and shredded pork was good but I wouldn't consider it great. Only if they had the Vietnam rice. The soup for the Pho was strong and a little on the salty side, but the texture of the noodles was good - even though they used dried noodles it was cooked just right not too soft or hard. Choose the meat that you feel most comfortable eating, however all of them taste good. The broth tastes good overall. However, it is quite salty, and if you're a nutrition freak you may be a little concerned. In the case that you are a nutrition freak, then I suggest replacing the traditional spring roll with the "summer roll" of the rice paper roll. Nice and sturdy, fresh taste from the lettuce, shrimp is cooked nicely and pork adds a nice texture to it. Add the vermicilli to add to the overall freshness and it tastes amazing. This is my favourite Pho place in kitchener. I grew up going to this specific restaurant. There is a Pho Dau Bo closer to my house on Fischer-Hallman road but it is nothing compared to this one. The reason is because everyone item on the menu at this pho dau bo is delicious. I've tried numerous items from the pho dau bo on Fischer-Hallman and it's just not on par. If you are just looking for the beef noodle soup then both are good but if you want to try and be satisfied with other things on the menu, definitely go to the king street location! read more

I've been wanting to visit this restaurant for years, and finally did last night. As has been pointed out, there is lots of parking in the back off of Charles Street, and there is a rear entrance. The ambience is very utilitarian. There's a plastic tray on every table containing spoons, plastic chop sticks, condiments, and a dispenser of the thinnest napkins I've ever encountered. If you're looking for something classy, or romantic, go elsewhere. Thanks to other reviews I was prepared for the "fill out your order system". I've seen this at other Vietnamese places, so there wasn't any learning curve for me. The menu is quite extensive, and there were a ton of Pho options. Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference between a lot of the Pho choices, but my default is always the house special, and that's what I went with; along with a Jackfruit Milkshake. My companion had a vermicelli chicken dish, and we ordered an appetizer of a ground meat roll with sausage. Green tea was brought to the table immediately, and was quite good. Our orders arrived very promptly, but not in any particular order. My Pho arrived first, then my companions entree, then the appetizer, then my shake. There's a door bell that sounds that alerts the server when an item is ready. It's a bit distracting, but you get used to it. My Pho was delicious. I wasn't sure what size to get, and went with a large because I had a good appetite. I still wasn't able to finish it. I'll definitely only get a medium next time. There were generous portions of beef, tendon and tripe, along with noodles. I always add the additional sprouts, basil and lime, and plenty of chilies. I can't overstate how good this was. My companion enjoyed her dish as well, but I did not have a taste I can't comment. The appetizer was a mixed bag. The meat stuffed rolls were tasty, but difficult to separate, and the sausage came in thin slices along the side of the plate and was pretty good, reminiscent of baloney. Not exactly what I expected. My Jackfruit shake was very good, but super sweet. Definitely more of a dessert than anything. When you're finished eating, stroll up to the cash and give your table number, with is indicated by one of those gold and black number stickers you see at Canadian Tire. You don't get a bill brought to your table, so don't want around. Be sure to grab a fruit candy at the cash. Overall, the food impressed me, as well as the speed of service and the price. From the moment I walk in I know I'm in for good food. It's decorated like a Vietnamese restaurant with Christmas lights strung along the wall board. Food comes out less than five minutes from when I ordered. Giant bowls of pho goodness. The broth is remarkable for being light on the MSG if there is even any in there. I'm pretty sure it's a house made broth. Everything else is just adequate. They don't splurge on the ingredients but there's enough there to chew on. The rare beef and brisket phõ was very tasty, and this place gets a bonus for having all of its condiments already on the table, so you don't forget anything. That makes for a damn good bowl of soup. Service was good and the complimentary tea is a huge plus (and should be the standard in my opinion, but it definitely isn't in the States). Out of all the pho places I have been to this has got to be one of my top choices. Shame the only one I've been to is their location in waterloo, but I can only hope their quality extends to their scarborough location as well. Order the Bun, they have quick and polite waitress staff and the food is served promptly definite plus whenever I go there I as absolutely famished. Their spring roll that comes with is nice and crispy on the outside yet manages to remain moist, without any of the grease leaking into the inside. Also tried their durian milkshake and now I can't get enough of the fruit, it is just amazing! The drink itself was a touch too sweet but I figure that is to capture the broadest number of people as durian is a hard fruit for most people to handle both by smell and taste.
