    Bean and jalapeno tamales
    Andrea G.

They make the best bean tamales on Earth! We're vegan/vegetarian and good tamales are difficult for us to find. We live in California and discovered Delia's while visiting family in the area. Their tamales are amazing. They are the perfect mix of masa and filling. They aren't huge, which is fantastic because I can eat a few different varieties in one sitting. The salsas are what put this place over the top. They have a flavorful red salsa which tastes great without too much heat. Then there is the green salsa, which is hot and delicious. Oh, and they're cheap too. I think we only paid around $14 for 18 tamales last night.

If you can ever get to a Delia's and you like tamales, you must go here. It's a staple of my trips to southern Texas. It's cheap, no-frills, great salsa, and flavorful tamales. The bean and jalapeno tamales with Delia's hot salsa is a real treat.

Well I think I've found the best tamales I've ever eaten anywhere. There's no amount of reviews that will do these corn husk wrapped tamales justice they are so simple yet so delicious. My visit here today wasn't by accident once I knew I was going to be in the area I was determined to get my fill of the most authentic tamales I could fine and I think I succeeded. I ordered the beef tamales but with all the choices I'm not so sure if I shouldn't have ordered a half dozen of each but I knew that would be a waste since they come in minimum quantities of six I had to settle, so beef it was. I've read a review stating these tamales are on the thin side well they were perfect in my opinion with a perfect ratio of filling to masa. I ordered a dozen because I thought that would be the right amount after a half dozen it was apparent these aren't on the thin side after all I managed to down two more just because I knew this experience wasn't going to be easily repeatable in the near future. The green salsa was as equally amazing as was the old style 10 oz glass bottle of Coca-Cola made with real cane sugar to wash it all down. Located about 5 miles north of the U.S. Border with Mexico in Mission this simple little restaurant is everything you could hope for when it comes to authentic tamales, the validation was the steady flow of repeat customers ordering take out as well as dining in. It was a nice surprise to find out I can order these online and have them in a day or two, there is no doubt I will be placing an order in the next week or so, check out their website and give them a try I plan to be a regular customer even though it will be via FedEx and I can't check in lol.

    Never disappoints!!

Another recent discovery here in Mission, TX. This small restaurant is off the main road in a strip…read moremall and seats maybe 40-50 people. The menu is simple but offers some variety. We were served a small plate with warm, crisp tortilla chips that were sprinkled with a seasoned powder (not Tajin) that was pretty salty. I shook off the powder as it made them too salty, even for my tastes. The greenish salsa was also a little salty but VERY TASTY and had a little kick. From where we were seated I observed the cook blackening the tomatillos on a grill in the kitchen. These were the backbone of this salsa. If it weren't quite so salty I'd be raving about them. I ordered a platter with three main items - Lonches, Sincronizada and Street tacos. All three items must be filled with the same protein, so I chose Birria. Other choices include pollo, bistek, trompo and fajita. The birria was nice and juicy and well seasoned. The Lonches were larger pieces of bread than I'm accustomed to finding, especially in Progresso, where they are quite popular. They were also toasted it seemed instead of being soft and pillowy. The street tacos were excellent with toppings of red onion and cilantro. The Sincronizada was something I'd never eaten before and was a smaller version of the one they serve as a main course. It was not the traditional dish which comes with slices of ham, but it was pretty good filled with birria. Charro beans were also served if I remember correctly. I ate one of the lonches, one of the tacos (the other I gave to my son) and the Sincronizada and was stuffed; leftovers for a later meal. The wife ordered the full version of a Sincronizada filled with pollo (chicken) and wasn't able to even finish half of it. It was huge! They brought us two bottles of salsa - a green salsa and a reddish/orange salsa. Both were pretty hot by my standards and the reddish one would absolutely hurt you if you added too much. So... a word to the wise... caution advised. They were quite tasty. All in all we will come back. I particularly want to try out some of their other proteins and their fajitas.

The RGV has many taquerías, most offering the same items on the menu. Few stand out as exceptional…read more When I saw that Ana Liz Taquería won the James Beard Award, my expectations were high, and with this visit they won my admiration. Ana Liz Taquería is located a few blocks north of Expressway 83 in Mission on the west side of Conway. Parking in the front is quite limited, but there is additional parking in the back. I found the taquería small but bright, clean, and pleasant inside. I was welcomed as I entered by one of the several friendly employees who handed me a menu (English on one side, Spanish on the other). She informed me of the protocol: order and pay at the window, then I'd be given a number to place at my table, and my order would be brought to me. The menu has many entrees that sounded wonderful: various kinds of tacos, tostadas, flautas, quesadillas, botanas, and other antojitos. I ordered the chile relleno taco, the alambre taco, and vampiro, all with fajita meat. I thought the chile relleno taco would be my favorite because I love any kind of chile relleno. While I did absolutely love it, I was captivated by the deliciousness of the fajita vampiro which includes melted cheese, guacamole, juicy fajita chunks, and pico de gallo... oh my! It was heavenly! One of the things that stood out to me was that the beef was not over-cooked as most taquerías do... This was cooked to perfection, still juicy, and well seasoned. To accompany the food, the server brought out an assortment of salsas, some fresh Mexican style cream, and some lime. I tried all the salsas except for one ( salsa macha). They were all excellent and ranged from mild to medium spiciness. Something else worth noting is the import their corn, and make their own tortillas. The vampiro was made with blue Mexican corn. For drinks, I ordered the limonada which they provide freshly bottled with a glass of ice. It was a perfect blend. Some reviewers mentioned the price... yes. The prices are higher here than at most taquerías. However, considering the exceptional quality, flavor, and service, AND that they are a James Beard Award winning establishment... it is well worth it. Ana Liz Taquería is 20 miles away from where I live, but I will definitely be back when I want some extra special Mexican tacos!

The hands-down best taco restaurant I've ever been to (including taquerias I've been to in Mexico…read moreand in Texas' biggest cities). The vampiros are so insanely delicious, I regret not filling up on them when I order anything else. Their tortillas and fajita are really good too. The restaurant itself is nothing crazy, very mom and pop, and the parking is a tough situation. Very crowded lot. Service is also not phenomenal but the food is absolutely delicious! One feature of their service I'd love for them to fix: when you order, you wait in line at a window before being seated. If you decide later you want a single extra taco, you have to go get back in line AND they take just as long as they took to bring your food originally so if you don't order something initially, it'll take so long to get it after the fact that you'll wish you just left. Customers who are already seated should be able to order with waitstaff and not wait in line again for twenty minutes. That does not make sense.
