I never drink shots, but I tell you what: That lemon drop went down a treat. It paired nicely with my IPA, which was citrusy. We sat on the patio, which is large and overlooks the seedy downtown San Diego streets. The weather is almost always perfect in SD, so I suggest sitting outside. But if you sit inside, that's kind of where the magic is happening. Because it wasn't until I walked around and looked at it closely that I realized that Villain's Brewing is horror themed! All around the restaurant and bar is horror movie paraphernalia, like Chucky paintings and a life-sized Freddy Krueger mannequin. I love a good themed establishment, and this one is very fun.

It had hoppy and citrus flavors and a finish that lingered on the palate. Next was the Harry Polanco Red Ale. This one had an intense copper color with caramel, hoppy and malty aromas. The flavor was full of malt and caramel with a strong bitterness and astringency that reminded me of an IPA. This ended up being my favorite of the three. We also tried the Foca Parlante Stout. It had a dark color with strong aromas of roasted coffee and caramel. The toasted malt and coffee flavors came through nicely. The view of the water from their location was amazing and it was fairly busy when we visited. I definitely want to come back and try the food next.

Inside and out on the patio. They have a very nice and large bar top. The place is quite large with an open and airy feel. Definitely cool brewery vibes. The bathroom was really impressive; huge and spotlessly clean. They have a great selection of beers on tap from light to IPA. Stouts, darks - a beer for everybody. Beer only right now. I enjoyed a very tasty Mexican Lager (La Bamba). Becky begrudgingly enjoyed one as well. She no longer drinks beer. She lost nearly 50 pounds by switching to low carb, low calorie seltzers a few years ago. That was our only disappointment, no seltzers. Not even in cans in the cooler. If we ever return, she'll have to bring her own. Sunny Grove does not have a kitchen, but they do host a different food truck or pop-up nearly every day. There's a larger back patio filled with various succulents and bushes, ample seating with plenty of natural shade from trees along with tables with umbrellas. The beers I had were world class. Muntz is always a treat but even better from the source and Nectaron Express was an amazing expression of New Zealand hops paired with "devils lettuce" terpenes. Places like this are what elevate this industry and I'm glad that I was able to visit. Definitely a destination that anyone should seek out.

The wall artwork is definitely striking to say the least but it adds to a very real and very distinct atmosphere that is quite unique in Tijuana. It isn't overwhelmingly hipster, but it doesn't pretend to be some traditional ale house. The wooden panels and sleek interior were quite comfortable, not to mention immaculately clean.
