I utilized this airport because I had a México cruise trip scheduled with Carnival Cruise Lines. Upon arrival, this airport felt unique compared to most airports. Instead of the traditional method of exiting the plane by walking on a jet bridge, passengers had to walk down portable stairs onto the tarmac (paved surface on the airport runway). Then, there was a designated walkway to get inside the airport to pick up luggage from the baggage claim area/carousel. I absolutely adored the gorgeous, open-air conceptual design of the airport. I was met with the fresh Southern California breeze, a plethora of palm trees, and beautiful sunshine from the sky. I also appreciated that this airport was considerably less crowded with individuals. The ease of navigation within the smaller building made a difference in getting in and out. All in all, the entire environment was picturesque, calm, and relaxing. There were a couple of eateries and a convenience store available for the general public. Since I was in the South Concourse, these options included Boathouse on the Bay, Sheldrake Coffee Roasting & Sweet Jill's Bakery, and Travel@Ease Gifts and News. I finally came back to the Long Beach Airport on Tuesday, 05/19/26, around 10:30 AM to travel home. The line with Southwest Airlines was a tad long to drop off luggage. However, the TSA line was very swift at getting people through. I will be flying to and from this airport moving forward anytime I need to travel to the Southern California region.

Then we are on the plane, and 40 mins after scheduled departure time(3:25) we haven't left and the captain comes on and says the plane has turned into a pumpkin - there was to be a mandatory check in our destination and if we had been in the air by 359 it would have been fine but since we weren't, the mandatory check had to happen at the departure airport and we are now deplaning. I almost always fly American but the southwest terminal at lax is so much nicer I thought I would take a chance. After spending more than I would have on an American flight, I'm fine with southwest. The last few experiences weren't great but this was the last straw. STAY AWAY if you want to actually want to get somewhere. Even Spirit is superior. I fly every week and my experiences with southwest are the worst. If I could give zero stars I would!!

But we went out and we saw a Minke whale and 3 humpback whales! One even waved for us. It was great. Kid had a rough time & was crying on the plane due to skin infection but I was able to cope through the 4 hour 40 min flight by comforting him at the front of the cabin and we also stayed in the restroom for some time. First class passengers were accommodating for the most part and we had staff that helped with bandages and drinks. I did not get to experience the Hawaiian meal service since I was so exhausted from carrying my child the entire time. Didn't eat at all. Guess I'll have to look forward to that next time. Forgot my phone in row 1 upon landing but their cleaning crew came to hand me the phone after baggage claim ended. Overall the plane ride was good -- service was OK -- and I'm so thankful my family landed safely after enduring 2 hours of a tearful toddler feeling miserable on the flight. At least we had some quiet time for the other 3 hours while he slept from crying too much. Phew - just relieved the entire episode is over.

I'm not looking to trash the owners, I just don't want anyone to be in the same situation we were, having to look for another place last minute after a long day of traveling, I was almost in tears, plus I had to pay way more to stay somewhere else because there weren't a lot of options.

So rather than pay an astronomical fee for the privilege of proximity, I did a quick search of the area. There are plenty of options, but many of them just seemed suspect. The I came across the Varden. Definitely a boutique hotel, but definitely worth checking out. The rooms are typically small with barely room for a bed, a partial desk and a small bathroom area. But the room was extremely clean, the fixtures and bed were new and cool and for one person, really perfect. Particularly since other than sleeping and checking emails, what else do you really need? Well, for starters you need to feel safe. And this place does a great job of securing the facility at night, but you don't feel you're in a bad neighborhood anyway. You also might like to enjoy a welcoming attitude, and the staff and place has plenty of that. The young staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Being forewarned that the property has 3 levels and no elevator is important, but honestly, it's not a tough climb to floor 3. And as a testament at how great the staff are, they wouldn't take no, and they carried my bags to my 3rd floor room. Since I was there for meetings, I needed to press my clothes, so a call to the front desk resulted in a brand new Iron and Board appearing at my room within minutes. And being welcomed by a reception with snacks, wine and drinks between 5:00 - 7:00 everyday, is just super nice. They also do a continental breakfast from 6:00-9:00 daily. They have a hip space right behind the registration area for these treats so it's easy to walk through on your way in/out of the property. And best of all the price per night was less than 1/2 of what those big chain hotels were charging. And I was less than 4 blocks (and a very nice walk past lots of local stores/restaurants to give me a feel for the area) from the Convention Center. For all these reasons, if you're in Long Beach solo, I would highly recommend you check out the Varden.

So.. after leaving there, I found out my dad had bought calling cards from Cambodia Express. Tried them out to find that all nine cards had accounts that were suspended! I noticed that this particular terminal is the home for other cruise lines as well, including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Seabourn Cruise Line. Before I was able to successfully board the Carnival Radiance ship, I had options to either drop off the luggage with the porters or take the luggage with me. I decided to take my bags just so I can have them readily available. Next, I proceeded to the "Arrival Appointment On Time" where my designated boarding time was set for 12:30 PM on May 14th. The line was moving at a fair pace and it didn't take long. At the first station, a Carnival employee checked the boarding pass and respective identification, whether it was an ID + birth certificate or just solely the passport. Furthermore, items were screened through security. Lastly, the walk to the cruise was a bit of a distance. Then, it was an ease to board the cruise. I loved the presentation of the indoor space. It had a bunch of fun Carnival wall signage, airplane decor, etc. The workers inside the cruise terminal were firm and straightforward with the customer service. The building space was spacious and clean. The Long Beach Cruise Center can get crowded easily at peak hours of pick up and/or drop off. It was crowded with many vehicles upon returning on May 19th. Thankfully, I had a ride-share that picked me up at an alternative location nearby to beat the traffic. The Long Beach Cruise Center gets the job done when it comes to accessing cruise vacations.
