They opened right down the road from us a few months ago and we've been wanting to give them a try. We like Mexican food. Went today 12/22/25 for lunch. The service was ...ok, not bad, certainly not great. The atmosphere was ok but freezing temps in the dining area. My wife went out to the car and got a coat. Unfortunately I didn't have one. I ordered one of their most popular dishes, the Quesabirria. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed in a new (to me) Mexican dish. It was the most tasteless cold Mexican food I've ever had. The birria dipping sauce was the only thing on my plate with any flavor. My wife got the taco salad and gave it about the same grade. Our favorite Mexican place (El Rincon) remains at the top of our list and DeMaiz lands solidly on the bottom with quite a few in between. Come to DeMaiz for fun, karaoke or margaritas but skip the food. read more

Two of us stopped in for a snack while out shopping. They haven't been open long and this was our first try. The interior is fairly small but beautifully decorated and has a nice vibe, and the outdoor patio as well. Our waiter was the manager who is super polite with a friendly and welcoming demeanor. I was blown away by the menu offerings, so many dishes I love but never see anywhere in these parts, so we've *finally* move up with our Latin food options here. We were only there to grab and snack and cold drink but I wished I could sample more after combing the menu. I opted for the appetizer elote and a single shrimp taco. The ingredients were very fresh, the corn was perfectly cooked and the sauce was creamy, tangy, and hit all the right notes. The shrimp were also perfectly cooked and the combination of filling ingredients made for a very tasty snack indeed. I ordered mine with a crisp corn tortilla and it was good but next time I might go for the flour. All in all everything was wonderful and I can't wait to try their more substantial dishes. I'm glad they are close enough to where we live that we can go back again often. As an aside, I try to eat local and was curious to know if this was a chain. So as of this writing there are only two locations, this one on Snow and Cottage Hill, the other in Mississippi. But the owners are the same who have Aztecas and San Miguel. read more

Really good Mexican. Had 'fancy' tacos. The margaritas were great too. The atmosphere was young & fun & our service was outstanding. Plenty of food for each guest. Most of us had left overs. My friend & I shared the 6 taco plate & it was very filling. read more

De Maíz opened two weeks ago ! What a great addition to West Mobile! I sat at the bar and was served by Jacqueline and Yelie, they were friendly, upbeat and fun to have as Bartenders! I ordered the pineapple margarita, it was delicious! What a spectacle to watch them make the drink. Oh, I haven't spoken of the ambiance, pardon my manners. The restaurant is open with high industrial ceilings and the vents are colored and there are gorgeous pots with cactii strewn about high above. There is agave artwork and faux greenery all over. It got pretty busy at 12pm and this addition should do well here in West Mobile. The bar is clean, organized and has beautiful white tiles with blue decorations and that compliments the bottles of tequila and other liquor on their shelves. There are at least 9 booths and several tables, the restaurant seats about 40 inside and not to mention the fun semi covered outside patio. Their outside patio features umbrellas, flowers growing on the wood and green succulents bordering you from the side walk. The vibe is relaxing and invigorating at the same time. I ordered three street tacos and requested them to be on corn tortillas. The single tacos were beautifully presented. The tacos were not hot nor warm, unfortunately, felt at about 80-90°, being from Los Angeles, I am spoiled, if you want to say, by getting hot tortillas all the time. The meat was warm, I am guessing it had to do with the burrito I had to go and those being delivered at the same time. They were delicious, all tacos were and my favorite was the chorizo. Had stopped by here when it had first opened and was quite satisfied with the service and food. Must say though that since that visit I have been back about 10-15 times and the last few am losing faith in their service. We went there for dinner and after being sat and ordered drinks we were asked to move by the staff so they could connect the table we were at to another for a larger party. Our party was three and we were seated at a table made for four so it wasn't like we were taking up a large table. Anyway, we moved and after about 30 minutes had not been waited on. We asked the hostess if we had a waiter and was told they had forgot us. The hostess asked 2 waitresses to take us and both seemed annoyed and said they were too busy. Another waitress overheard them arguing and took us. She was very apologetic for how they acted and was shocked that we had even been asked to move to start with. Fast forward to my recent visit for lunch. I walked in with a co worker at 1105 am. There was one table seated and us. 25 minutes later we still had no server. Took the family here last Sunday for lunch/brunch. Yep, that's right...they have a small brunch menu! Sign me up! We enjoyed the meal and the service was good. Not super fast but was ok. Frankly I am tired of rushed meals when we go out so it seemed appropriate. The menu is varied with good choices. Side note please add mole to the menu (the sauce not the animal. That would be gross). Probably in the minority here but I put mole on almost everything if given the chance. They clearly spent a good amount of money on the interior lighting and vibe as well as making sure the outside patio was made comfortable with heaters etc. large bar with pretty good selection of beers and spirits. I gave 4 stars out of 5 for two reasons. One, they have a live DJ on Sunday playing club music waaay to fricking loud. Cut that stuff out ASAP. Second, like so many other Mexican/taco places now, their prices are very high for tacos, burritos etc. sign of the times I guess but I walked away paying a little over $80 after tip for 3 people at Sunday lunch (no alcohol)...that's just not something I want to do every Sunday ... not for tacos and nachos anyway. Final word...they have TV's on all the walls (maybe outside I didn't look) so very good option for getting out to watch a game with some nachos and beers. read more

They do a lot of fun games like Tricia today on Wednesdays only thing I don't like what's going on & it's kept me away from going to any other games they do. Their Bartender Ally wins the trivia every wednesday night getting none wrong It's total BS first off the Workers have no business playing those games & second off I've seen multiple occasions where she was getting the answers yelled out to her by the Customers at the Bar. completely unfair & gives no one else a real chance of winning the 100$ Gift card. Good food but again cheating to not have to give the 100$ gift card there's some seriously morality issues going on with This & again. Workers shouldn't be playing these games it's insane read more

Definitely a must try restaurant! The restaurant is so cutely decorated and very hip. The service was outstanding. Our server constantly refilled drinks and chips and gave great recommendations on the food. We had the sizzling nachos and barris burritos... excellent!!! I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I felt the prices were a little high. $17 for a regular large house margarita and $12 for the small. Can't imagine what the top shelf would cost read more

This is more like a 2.5 star review. I did not enjoy my chorizo taco or birria, they were both terribly salty. The chorizo was leaking oily mess onto the plate. Service wasn't a home run either. Long wait before initial contact, server got the part of the order wrong. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident, but unfortunately the combo of issues is enough to keep me from coming back. DeMaiz Taco Cantina is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Mobile in my opinion. The ambiance is very interesting but I love it, the service is really caring and funny, and the food is unfathomable. Especially the quesabirria. I would totally recommend DeMaiz. read more

We brought our family for lunch and absolutely loved everything we ordered. The burritos were very flavorful and juicy. Our granddaughter had chicken tenders that were very good and were served with breaded fries that were to die for. This is our new favorite Mexican comfort food! read more

I ordered enchiladas with steak & cheese. They were ok, but there was no cheese in them and no enchilada sauce on them, so the enchiladas were pretty dry, just basically a tortilla with steak. The rice & beans were really good, and and meal included chips & salsa which I was surprised about, and they were really good. Mixed feelings, though, because the enchiladas were lacking. My daughter got the birria burrito and she loved it. ** I just realized what happened with my enchiladas. I went to eat my 2nd enchilada for dinner (had the 1st one for lunch) and it was all cheese, no steak. So they gave me one with steak & one with cheese. Weird! But there was still no enchilada sauce and no cheese on top. read more

I ordered online which was nice and convenient. I ordered the cali chicken bowl. It was ok. I didn't care for the lettuce in the bowl. It was more like a salad lettuce as opposed to like a lettuce that you would put on tacos and I also got tomatoes which were just cherry tomatoes cut in half as opposed to a diced tomato just my preference. Also the avocado wasn't ripe. My husband, got the chimichanga and he loved it. The chips and salsa were pretty good too, but it's got a little kick to it. deMaiz is new to Mobile but we had dined at their location in Pascagoula previously. The restaurant has a lively atmosphere where everyone seemed to be enjoying their experience. The service is excellent and they made sure that everything we needed was promptly served. The food is delicious, they have a variety of dishes, it will take some time to try them all. The refreshing part of the menu is the variety, deMaiz offers menu items that are different than other Mexican restaurants in Mobile. read more

We went as a family for Sunday lunch and were there for about an hour between 12 and 1:15 pm. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We were seated on the patio and heaters were in use and very effective in warming up the space on a chilly day. The menu aesthetic, prices, and food were identical to other established restaurants in our area such as Aztecas and Hacienda San Miguel serving Americanized Mexican/Tex-Mex food. The steak fajitas I ordered were coated in an unusual and unsavory red sauce that detracted from the steak flavor. The steak fajitas were more like a stew rather than sizzling off the grill with the smokey char flavor I hoped for. The salsa was unseasoned puréed tomato sauce with scant amounts of onions and cilantro. The pico served with my fajita complements was not satisfactory. The ambiance was uncomfortable because a dj was set up playing techno dance music at a high volume. It took away from the feel of the decor, warm and friendly staff, and made conversation at our table nearly impossible. A manager did adjust the volume but before we even had our meal it had been turned back up to dance club level which really made it difficult to just enjoy the whole experience and treat of dining out as a family. The staff was the best thing about this experience. All in all, this was a "one and done" for us as there are better options nearby in west Mobile at Villa Del Rey and the soon to be openTaco Mama. read more

First visit was great. At this point, they had only been open for 3 days. We went for lunch on Sunday. Salsa was very good. Also had the birria burrito, birria quesadillas, and nachos. The birria items come with a birria broth which I thought was fantastic. (also came with a spoon... smart) The decor is contemporary. They have a house DJ playing upbeat music which I thought was refreshing but I could understand how some people could find it off putting for that time of day. Having said that, it would make a great "date night" venue. Then menu offers a number of items that are not typical at other local Mexican joints, but you will still find the ol' TexMex standby's if that is what you are used to. West Mobile needed this imop. BTW: It's upscale. So don't wear sweat pants. read more
