Demel is one of the famous, old style coffee cafes in Vienna. It's a bit underwhelming in all honesty. The decor is opulent and pleasing to look at. Upon entering the main ground floor room looks plush and inviting. There is a bar on the left hand side with decadent desserts inviting you to dive in. Figuring out how seating works is a tad confusing as others have mentioned. If there is no seating in this main first room, walk straight back. There will more than likely be a standing sign that says 'Wait here to be seated.' If you are at the front of this line, you can watch as bakers create the magical sweets in front of you. Tall glass panes protect the confectionary delights and any germs tourists might be harboring. The bakers look kind of in different to their job and pay no mind to any who may be avidly staring at them or taking their photo. The wait here might be short, it might be long. It depends on how busy the cafe is. When I went, I waited in this line about 10 minutes before it moved and the line shifted up the stairs leading to the second floor. Here, I waited easily 35 minutes. The staircase served as the route up and down so at times you had to think thin and shove to one side allowing others to squeeze past you on their way down. Not the most efficient method if you ask me. The upstairs is just as elaborately decorated as the first floor. Large chandeliers, mirrors on the walls, and plush carpets bring the theme of extravagance to life. I was finally seated at a small round table in a corner. A glass case in the hall showcases the varying food and dessert options. You should get up from your table and scope those out immediately. You can tell the woman working behind the counter what you want and she writes down the order. You then go back to your table and the food is delivered by a waitress/waiter. If you want something heavier, Demel does have a food menu with sandwiches, soups, quiches, etc. These you order from your table with your waitress/waiter. You can of course get coffee, hot chocolate, smoothies, you name it. Everything is incredibly overpriced because hello, it's Vienna and you're in a historic coffee shop so be prepared to pay up. I went with an apple strudel and my boyfriend got the sacher torte Vienna is famous for. My strudel was great, but the best part was the home made cream. That was AMAZING and I was tempted to ask for a bowl of cream to legit eat with a spoon. Our total was about 11 euros for those two things. Do not come here hungry or planning to eat a full meal. Ich liebe DEMEL!!!! Yes it's crowded, touristie, and slightly pricey (for New Yorkers it's reasonable)but so what?? This is a must visit Viennese institution for all the cake addicts! Demel was the 2nd destination of my Viennese pastry-hopping. As some of the pastry snobs already know, the son of Sacher married the daughter of Demel and he ended up revealing the family secret recipe of Sachertorte to the Demel family, which led to the long-running lawsuit. At the end, Sacher won the case but Demel also created its own version of Sachertorte which is still very similar. Fascinated by the drama behind the Sachertorte battle, I was quite excited to compare the taste of both Cafe Sacher and Demel on the same day! Let me first start off with the ambiance. I loved the charming interior decorated with chandeliers and embroidered wall paper! You will definitely get rewarded visually for the typical Viennese cafe ambiance. The window displays are filled with tantalizing sweets creating a theme of the month dealing with the current events in Vienna. When you step inside the store, you are greeted with overwhelming amount of exquisite pastry and baked products selection. I almost had a panic attack because I got too excited and was inundated with the vast choice I was given in front of me! OMG!!! GASP!!! After deep contemplation, I made up my mind as to what to try besides sachertorte before escorted by the waitress to our table upstairs. We ordered the following: 1)Sachertorte : Ofcourse, duh!! Instead of the Cafe Sacher's circular chocolate seal with scalloped edges, Demel opted for the sharp-edged triangular shape chocolate seal, which appeared to me like a not so subtle attempt to prove it's different. Overall it's very similar to that of Cafe Sacher, but I personally preferred that of Cafe Sacher. The taste of chocolate flavor of Cafe Sacher version seemed a little bit more refined in my opinion. I'll be happy with either one of them to be honest in case you are thinking of buying some for me, they are both delicious! 4.5 stars 2) Karottentorte (carrot cake) : The carrot cake was moist and flavorful, definitely better than most average American carrot cakes! 4 stars 3) Passionsfruchttorte : This passion fruit mousse was amazing!!! 5 stars! 4) Melange: It's basically a Viennese version of cappuccino. If its good enough for Austrian royalty, its good enough for the peasant Chun P right? Maybe not...not good enough for Chun P that is! Demel's has been around for well over a 100 years and was "to go" dessert spot for the Hapsburgs, rulers of the former Austrian Hungarian Empire. Maybe Demel's was the best back in those days, but I just found it "pretty good". Most of the pastries around €4.50, I actually thought they would cost more. We got their famous Sachertorte which is a chocolate cake with a touch of apricot...pretty good but pretty dry. Apple strudel was pretty good too, but not great. I also got a almond cream cake that was fantastic. Service was typical Viennese: dull and all business. No air conditioning. No hostess here, just take any open table and a waitress will eventually come take your drink order, then give you a ticket to go back to the dessert display to make your picks, which will later show up at your table. When we were in Salzburg, we tried the famous Sacher-torte chocolate cake at the Sacher hotel. According to history, it was invented by Franz Sacher, who made the cake in 1832 for royalty. He later completed his training as a chef, moved to Budapest before settling in Vienna. Sacher's eldest son Eduard carried on his father's culinary legacy, completing his own training in Vienna with the Royal and Imperial Pastry Chef at the Demel bakery and chocolatier, during which time he perfected his father's recipe and developed the torte into its current form. The cake was first served at the Demel and later at the Hotel Sacher, established by Eduard in 1876. Both the Demel and the Sacher hotel claim their cake was the original, and taste much better. Stephen wanted to taste and judge it for himself. When you walk inside Demel, you'll first smell butter, then you'll find glass cases filled with desserts. It seems this is for those who wish to take food away, as they ask you to move on upstairs. To dine in, head to the end of the walkway and wait to be seated, or go upstairs for a better chance of seating. Don't be surprised if there's a line at both places. Don't be surprised if non tourists skip the queue and find their own table! Service is not this place strongest asset. They treat tourists poorly, or at least that is what I discovered. Before you say I have no clue on "European Service" I've already been traveling Europe for weeks, so I do comprehend that American service and European service is different. Even the Europeans from my group said that this place sucked in service, so I am glad I wasn't alone in that thought. We were first given a table next to the waiting line. Dim, full of foot traffic... No thanks. I want some natural light please! When asked for a table with sunlight, we were told to wait, despite all the empty tables we saw... And wait we did, for a good 15 minutes until someone finally got us a table. We also noticed the "nicer" table has the "reserved" sign on the table... when a tourist tried sitting down, the table is taken. When an Austrian sat down, the reserved sign was removed. We ordered the famous Sacher cake, plus some famous Viennese coffees. I got the Melange, Stephen got the Espresso with cream. The coffee was good, but no different than any other European coffee we've had. Stephen said this cake was moist compared to Sacher Hotel, but lacked a thicker layer of apricot. He prefers the Sacher Hotel cake more. There you have it, its off our bucket list. Next time I will just take the cake for "Take Away" and avoid the bad service. To give this place 4 or more stars means you're lucky to have received good service, or, you have no clue what good service means. read more

Spent a nice afternoon at this famous shop outlet in front of the Stephens Cathedral in Central Vienna. We savored the famous Apple strudel and had a pot of mint tea. While the food was good and the ambiance wonderful, we felt insulted by the waiter when we asked for more hot water for the tea. He let us wait for 15 minutes before bringing a tiny container of water fit for a small child. I am very disappointed that a cafe with such a long established reputation would be so cheap with their water! read more

This was super disappointing! So many articles, guidebooks, and blogs mention this very restaurant that I was probably setting myself up for disappointment. To start, this place is right in the center of the city (walking distance form the Hofburg complex). It's absolutely beautiful on the inside and all of the desserts in the glass case seem very tempting. I decided to go with a classic - apple strudel. It was probably the worst strudel we had on the entire trip. It was soggy and the apple filling was flavorless. Even worse - it was quite expensive! Vienna is known for its coffee and cakes so one must traverse the many coffee shops here. As I have quite a sweet tooth, it was necessary to stop by Demel to check out their selection of cakes! What a collection do they have! From cheesecakes to crumble cakes to find looking fancier styled cakes, there is a plethora of options to choose from. When in Vienna, one must try the sacher torte cake, which is a traditional cake made of firm Chocolate sponge layers with apricot jam layers covered in a dark chocolate icing. I'm really not sure how this cake became famous because based on my tasting along with other references who have also tried this cake, this cake is generally pretty dry. I fancy moist cakes; however, when in Vienna, one must sacher torte it! The apricot jam layer was a nice and surprising touch along with the thick dark chocolate icing. But let me share with you the star of this shop. I present to you-- dun dun dun, the Schokozauber. A chocolate domed cake with a cookie based bottom, layered with a creme brulee filling, chocolate mousse and pistachio creme center. Wowza. This will blow your mind! The line to view the display cabinet of sweet treats was insanely busy on a Sunday afternoon. We squeezed past the crowds and were quickly seated. From the seating area, you get to peer right into the kitchen where the magic is made. We tried the apple strudel, Viennese ice cream coffee, and a sacher torte. I don't know where to begin. I was in Vienna for 1 night and a friend of a friend suggested this place. And I was so happy we came here. When you walk in, you see over a hundred pastries on the left. And on the right is a gift shop with delectable chocolates. If you go to the bar you can order coffee and other drinks as well as food. There's more seating past the bar with a glass wall and can watch the bakers decorate all the pastries. We started off with dessert because those pastries in the front were too tempting. Then we got food. I ordered the ravioli and it was probably some of the best ravioli I've eaten. Better than anything I can find in America. It was so rich a d fulfilling. Oh lord. The Demel. I stayed in Vienna for a week on Graben, so this little piece of heaven was just around the corner. Instead of breakfast, I chose to sample something different at Demel every morning and just skip the whole lunch and/or "wholesome" breakfast thing altogether. There's a series of opulent tea rooms upstairs, or you can elect to dine in the side hall bordering the glass-walled kitchen, watching the chefs craft strudels and tortes. It's amazing to watch them prefect their art, and was a very satisfying way to start the morning. The Demel is a sumptuous affair for the senses; everything is done up in wooden panelling, gilded mirrors, and baroque moulding. It's truly just a sight to behold even if you don't order anything (though I don't know why you'd visit the Demel if not for dessert). You can either order at the counter, behind the dizzying array of cakes, or pick out a little table and wait to be seated. There's a room full of finger sandwiches and more savory items... but seriously.... I was there for the cake. Service was generally quite prompt. Eager to settle the long-standing dessert duel between the Sacher Hotel and Demel, I made sure to sample a Sacher/Demel torte from each. Sadly, I can't comment on a winner as the heady chocolate + apricot jam combo did not really vibe with my tastes. What did wow, however, were the 1) Annatorte and 2) stritzel. The Annatorte was hands down my favourite cake I had in Austria - it's a whimsical dark chocolate beauty, with layers of orange liqueur-saturated mousse and topped with thick, undulating curls of nougat. It's obscenely rich, so one slice may just about do you in. The stritzel is a braided loaf of fluffy, citrus-flavoured bread, painted with egg yolk and sprinkled with nuts. While not as eye-catching as the myriad of iced cakes and fruit tarts, I recommend you give this more sedate fellow a try as I really enjoyed the texture and flavours of this pastry. I did not purchase any boxes of candies, but their front showrooms - bedecked in elaborate flower arrangements and marble display cases - boasted everything from chocolate "cat's tongue" bars to tins of candied violets. There are wooden chests, which house a demeltorte apiece, and various jams and preserves. Everything, as per usual, is extremely elegant and calorically irresponsible. I was in love. tl;dr: a palace of dessert. Get fancy tea, skip a proper meal, and watch the chefs meticulously create cakes. Attempt to walk/run/etc. off your coffee and cake. Repeat. read more

Demel wasn't my first crush... but, pretty close to it. Before I came across Pierre Herme, I used to be obsessed about Demel. That feeling never goes away. In my last visit to Vienna, after checking in late evening, knowing that I'm directionally challenged and GPS can lead one astray, I spent two whole hours walking around Innere Stadt, mapping different pedestrian routes from my hotel to the bakery: so that I'd beat the rush when the shop opened in the morning (I was on a time budget). Later that night, I prayed hard that nothing untoward happen in the plaza, because I was pretty sure the security cameras would have picked up a middle-eastern looking man mapping routes suspiciously around midnight... I don't believe any contemporary operational bakery has the same pedigree as Demel, founded in 1786, and serving as purveyor to the Hapsburg court of Franz Joseph (1874). Baking was apparently a very litigious business in the early twentieth century with an intense legal battle fought between the owners of Hotel Sacher and the Demel Bakery over the use of the title "Original Sacher Torte"... and where that layer of apricot jam must go (only under the icing: Demel, also in the middle of the cake i.e. two layers: Sacher). Sacher won that argument and so Demel's version is called "Demeltorte" - not a loss in my books because Sachertorte may be the world's most famous chocolate cake, perhaps on account of that burden itself, it disappoints more than it wows... As a child, an astrologer warned me never to attend auctions, for I wouldn't resist myself and end up overpaying for what I was bidding on. I've mostly followed that advice, except when it comes to desserts for I often end up picking anything that catches my fancy and am unable to decide (to be fair to myself: it's also insurance against bad selection). So, I went the whole hog at Demel picking up 4 different slices of cake: Annatorte (chocolate cake, nougat topping, orange liqeur), Karottentorte (carrot cake), Nuss kaffeetorte (hazelnut and coffee cake), and Topfensouffletorte (soufflé cake). Annatorte was my favorite, and has a neat story to it: it was dedicated to Anna Demel and the nougat topping intended to reflect her hair (she wore it as a bun). It's said that the bakers at Demel were so creative and good at their craft that if you could draw it, they'd come up with a cake for it... I don't begrudge Demel their strict traditionalism. Their chief patissier once said that if he changed the recipes, people would chase him out of the bakery. But, it kills me to admit that some of the cake slices I had suffered from slow turnover, and could have been fresher. Buying slices leaves one exposed to the wisdom of the crowds, and I can't really say I'd put my life on the line based on tourists' taste in dessert! Einspänner is still my favorite and a big plus if you have a sweet tooth I'd their delicious selection of cakes and pastries. We came here after not wanting to wait in the long line at Cafe Central. We were so glad that we came. The aroma of sweet baked goods as you walk in the door is so comforting. We had the sausage and egg dish and the ham and eggs which were all delicious. But the Kaiserschmarrn was the star of the show. So delicious and had the perfect texture. The coffee was also delicious, as is to be expected in a Viennese coffee house. Definitely was worth the visit and would definitely come back! read more

Wow, their Sacher Torte is perfection. The apricot jam inside the cake is fragrant, moist, just begging to be eaten. The tortes come in little squares or huge triangular slices, served by kindly waitresses who understand people having their sugar fix. Demel is otherwise very traditional and a fixture in Wien. Don't waste your time with Hotel Sacher - go to Demel and enjoy the torte the way Franz Sacher intended it to be! read more

Would definitely not recommend although it's nice to look around the elegant, if uncomfortably packed, shop. Come here to experience the famous bakery that was a favorite of the Hapsburgs. I had a great time here, mostly because everything tasted so good, and I love the style of decor inside! It did seem very touristy, a lot of people ordering slices of gorgeous desserts to go, groups walking in just to look inside at the shop and area where you can see the pastry chefs at work. We came for an early lunch and dessert and there were a few tables still open. Our server spoke English to us and let us take our time even though it seemed like several tables (all tourists) around us just stopped in for dessert, not lunch. I had the Avocado Tartare & Norwegian Smoked Salmon- it came with a generous amount of spring greens and a light, acidic dressing. The avocado mix was delicious and went perfectly with the salmon. For dessert you order at the counter with all the sweets, get a ticket and give to your server. We split a dessert with layers of strawberry, banana, chocolate, meringue and a delicious crust. When there are legal battles over the real Sacher Torte, then you realize Demel bakery is the real deal in the dessert world. Established in the late 1780s, passed down the Demel family name for generations but now the ownership has changed a few times in the 1990s and onwards. However, having been there I don't think the uniqueness has lessened with the change of ownership. This bakery truly is a remarkable example of old world politeness and service. The servers are wearing such pristine white aprons over their uniforms and politely asking what would you like... Yes what would I like? Well, all the pastries, cakes, and sweet goodies for sure. When Sam and I stopped by here it was incredibly busy in the afternoon. But I think it would be busy no matter what time you go there. First we decided to quickly get our desserts to go because of the rush. But then we decided we are on vacation let's enjoy our time by sitting and taking our time and eating yummy pastries and cakes. We did not get a seat in the ground floor bakery area, but we did pass the amazing cake area where professional bakers and pastry chefs were working their wonders. Many tourists were taking pictures thru the glass windows of the creations. We went upstairs where after a little wait we were seated and enjoyed the famous Sacher Torte and some other pastries. In love with this place. One of the top places to go for the best austrian desserts. This place has very old history and I heard the founder was an inventor of famous Sacher cake, which later became world known at Sacher cafe, where that chef's son worked. This place has 3 levels. Each is unique and has its own feel. On the first floor, you can see through the glass pastry chefs working on culinary masterpieces. The amount of pastries here is way beyond my power to remember. I have tried traditional breakfast here, which included a coffee, an egg and a basket of pastries with jam and honey. That breakfast will be remembered for a while:) In addition, I tried their cream cake. That piece of cake was one of the best things I have had in a long while. Trying the Sacher torte is a must when you visit Vienna. I tried Cafe Sacher as well. I enjoyed the flavor of the chocolate here, but they don't have a layer of the apricot jam in the middle of the cake like Cafe Sacher does. Their layer is right under the chocolate and it makes it not as noticeable. This place is definitely a tourist trap. There were a lot of people waiting for a table. We didn't plan to visit this bakery but we saw a bunch of asian tourist taking photos of the store and we got curious so we entered the store to check it out. It was pretty crowded in the store and their cakes looked very appetizing. We asked the waitress which one was their specialty and she told us of the chocolate torte (The day before we went to Cafe Sacher and we noticed the similarity) so we ordered one to eat in. They gave us a receipt and asked us to have a seat. We decided to sit outside since the weather was nice and it was way too warm inside the bakery/cafe. The waitress who served the outside sitting area was not friendly at all. She didn't greet us, just simply asked us if we wanted to order a drink with a very firm voice. We told her we needed some time to browse (we just sat down!!!) and she just abruptly left. She did take the "receipt" so she knew we ordered the chocolate cake. We waited for about 15 minutes and the waitress never came back to check on us and our chocolate cake didn't got delivered. Pissed off, so we decided that we were not going to order a drink! Around minute 20, I was telling my friend if we should just leave because we felt IGNORED...My friend went inside to check and finally the waitress came out with a piece of the chocolate torte that we ordered. She definitely was NOT happy when we told her that we weren't going to order anything to drink... well, excuse me, we also WEREN'T HAPPY that a slice of pre-made chocolate cake took you 20+ minutes to bring out!!! Ok.. so the service was HORRIBLE and the ATTITUDE was just unacceptable for such a caliber place! (did I mention.. the torte cost $4.90 EURO..and it wasn't even a big slice...!)..now the review of "overly hyped chocolate torte"....(I actually managed to google this place and the torte while waiting!!! so I realized of the "fame" of this darn place!)..Honestly, it really WAS NOT AS GOOD AND YUMMY AS PEOPLE RAVE ABOUT!!! This is a great way to experience a Vienna coffee house. The line is relatively short if you do not have a reservation, and the place is so huge, the line moves quickly. We only had to stand in line on a busy mid-afternoon December Saturday for approximately 15-20 minutes to be seated. As you get closer to the tables, you walk upstairs via a staircase that provides a bird's eye view of the pastry chefs at work in the large kitchen, and delicious baking smells tickle your nose. The non-smoking dining area upstairs is large but broken up into smaller rooms. Huge, ornate chandeliers hang from the ceiling in each room and comfortable chairs and tables are generously spaced apart. The decorations are decadent. You place your order for desserts at a case and a table that contains these items on display. Savory menu items are also available, but we just came for sweets and coffee. Our hot chocolate with whipped cream (the best we have had in recent memory) and our Einspänner (large espresso with whipped cream) were divine. The anna torte, which we had read was highly recommended, was dense and chocolatey. It was good to try once but if I ever go back, it was not good enough to keep me from trying something else. We also got a mini sacher torte, adorned with a pink little pig. I am not a fan of sacher torte, but it was good. Our tab came to approximately 18 Euro. This was a fun way to relax and enjoy some delicious coffee drinks in a beautiful and sophisticated setting. Nearly everyone in our vicinity seemed to be tourists like us, but that did not matter because we were satisfied with what we got. read more

Got a take out but i do agree with most people here. The service sucks! I got the mini sacher torte and the demel mini torte ... The saher torte was better than the one from the hotel sacher IMO but as most people have already said.... It is overhyped and my understanding is that it might be the most delicious chocolate tarte when it was invented but we now live in the world where you can get much better tart from a bakery near your house. The demel torte was somethin that I expected to be better... But it turned out to be even worse than the sacher torte :( the description says it was a hazelnut and nougat tart but I could barely taste that. The only down side to this place is you'll never be able to eat dessert anywhere else again. This is where the tastes of sugar, butter, and flour really comes true. They have about 300 kinds of cakes and cookies to chose from and I hear each and every one of them is divinely good. Everything our party had was amazingly different and better than what we ever had before. From the coffee covered with the most wonderful deep flavor wiped cream to THE best apple strudel I've tasted with its surprising vanilla cream. I believe vanilla ice cream is melted into that cream and combined with the heavenly strudel it is a winning dish. The warm white wine with rum I ordered next to it per the server's recommendation was indeed a perfect pairing. This is the desserts palace. Three floors of beauty and wonderful tastes. The first floor has a glass wall with the kitchen and you can see how the magic happen in there, a beauty of its own. Expensive but service was very fast because we came kind of early, they had a lot of space, seating and variety of pastries, drinks, breads. The portions of cake/pastries were smaller as well. The bill forever, I swear our waitress hated us, everyone around us who came later than us left and we were stilled waiting for our bill. I understand Austrians take their time but out of all the restaurants we have been too, this place took an excessive amount of time to get the bill. She also gave us stank eye, I think she just has a personally vendetta against Americans, even though we didn't do anything to offend her. By the time we left around 12, there was a line to get seated. I have no idea what I ordered, I just saw a picture on Yelp and pointed at it. It was like a lemony cream pastry cake with vanilla sauce. I really liked it. The apple strudel was fresh and solid. The chocolate cake was really good, very moist but the chocolate on top was super sweet. The tea was good, the coffee was good. I don't think you can really go wrong with the drinks. We got ice cream when we left, it was only 1.30€ for a huge scoop! They have me twos scoops of the chocolate one (idk the german name) even though I asked and only paid for one! That lady was really nice who served us. We also got the berry flavor that's violet colored- i can't remember the name but it's like a flavor that's very popular in Austria. read more
