I dined in. 2-star experience for dining in. Being in the area and I've passed by this sushi spot many times. Always curious how this place would taste. The sushi selection and freshness were okay. It's acceptable. It is definitely more for grab and go for huge catering orders. They offer a pretty extensive party tray selections. It doesn't matter if you're walking in from the front or the back, customers will still have to place their orders with the cashier. Cashier will ask if this is to go or dine in. I opted in for dine in to test the service. After paying for my order and selecting a table for myself, I still had to get up to get my own order from the cashier. There were 5 employees in the store, no water was served. My takeaway, dine in is a self service option. Quality: Fish portion was okay. Quality of sushi was okay. Been here a couple of times now, mostly for lunch since they have decent lunch specials. Prices have gone up over the years, although that's pretty standard for a lot of places. They have a small parking lot in the back and street parking available as well, and you can enter either through the back or front. Interior is on the smaller side but there's a good amount of seating still. They have an area with a water dispenser that has both hot and cold water as well as free tea bags. I went with my parents and toddler on a weekday afternoon and there were three other people in there. We ordered the Lunch Special set G, two Dragon Maki, one unagi maki, and one cucumber and avocado maki. I also ordered a fried shrimp maki later but forgot to get a picture of it. All the ingredients appear fresh and tasted great, though it seems to be on the smaller side portion-wise (maybe that's just me). Definitely one of the better sushi places around here though and I appreciate that they're not closed in the early afternoon until 4ish like a lot of other sushi places do. If you're in a pinch in the burbs and craving sushi, this might hold you over. While certainly on the cheaper end for sushi, not sure it's comparable to other go-to carry out spots in the city... like Lawrence fish market. I got a lunch combo that came with 12 pieces of nigiri and a tuna roll and added in an unaki handroll. The nigiri was fine, the most flavorful being the salmon, everything else was sort of bland. What I did like was each nigiri piece had wasabi on it between the fish and the rice... just like how they prepare it in Japan. The tuna roll was ok, again, not too much flavor. The unaki handroll was a pleasant surprise, not as sweet and nice and tender. I'd go back and order more handroll to try. Run by a nice older Asian couple and the lunch crowd was decent. It's certainly a place for that, but it's not like the garbage from a gas station thankfully so you still get some quality from here. The prices are amazingly cheap so you can get a lot. It's about $3 for the cheapest. Vegetable rolls are the cheapest, and we got a few of these. Kappa Maki is one with cucumbers. Oshinko Roll is one with pickled radish. Dempster Sushi has long been a value spot for sushi. The interior is quite dated, the employees are neither friendly nor unfriendly, the inside of the restaurant does not smell very good. They have several lunch specials to choose from too, only available Monday-Friday, at certain hours. They are about $3-4 cheaper when so. Since it was Saturday, I didn't get the lunch specials. Tell the person behind the counter what you want, pay, and grab a seat. The dining area is cozy. It had about six tables, somewhat close together. There is also a water dispenser, if you want water. Instead, I went with the: - Rainbow maki. The rainbow maki had cucumber, avocado, tuna, fluke, salmon, shrimp, tai, and crab meat. When trying somewhere new, I usually gravitate toward this since it has a combination of most of the fish, which will give you an indication of the freshness of things. - Alaska maki. It had: Cucumber, Avocado, Sesame, Seaweed, Salmon, Sushi Rice, Crunch, Spicy Sauce, Unagi Sauce. I liked the flavor and tempura crunch. It tasted fresh and it tasted good on its own (without the soy sauce)! As for their service, I thought it was okay... While I was in the middle of ordering at the counter, the employee/manager left to answer the phone. He came back and was taking their order over the phone in front of me. My friend told me once the "D" stood for delicious. I must agree that it definitely was! We had enough leftover for one more serving for that late night sushi *ahem "sushi sleepwalker" in our family. It's really a significant jump from combo C to D as to the quantity as it goes from a 12" to a 16" tray- we had no leftovers with combo C (feeling satisfied), but had enough to fill a personal size container with the D in (and be stuffed). I really like how much wasabi and ginger they provide with this tray. I love the ginger as it allows my tongue to savor the next bite. I ordered the sushi & maki tray since it had a lot of rolls that I knew my kids would like. Most were simple- the most extravagant being the dragon roll. When I arrived I called to let them know I arrived. A woman, who I believe was the owner, came out in a mask to deliver the tray right into the passenger seat of my car. One look at this massive tray and I feared a lot of it would be going to waste since sushi never appeals to me on day 2. However, my hungry kids got right to work on it and we finished the entire tray. Here's some background so you can decide if Dempster Sushi is for you. The number one ethnic food in South Korea is Japanese, and the favorite ethnic food in Japan is Korean. There aren't very many options for authentic Japanese sushi in the greater Chicagoland area, there aren't any in Southeast Wisconsin. If you're looking for authentic Japanese sushi, this place has the taste, but not the Japanese style presentation. If you're looking for Korean style Japanese sushi, then this is your place, it's the best Korean style sushi place I've been to in the Midwest. If you're looking for American style sushi, you might be disappointed, the prices are lower, it's not a fancy place, they don't have a lot of those non traditional American sushi creations. The side orders are limited and not as good as the traditional sushi choices. I would certainly not describe this place as a "hole in the wall," it's clean and very typical of South Korean casual restaurants. The service is very good by Korean standards, no-nonsense, efficient, accurate, and quick. South Koreans don't do that obsequious American waitstaff performance nor do they bother with the Japanese traditional sushi service aesthetic. They do use very fresh ingredients. They package carry out well in terms of the safety of the sushi, I usually eat here and I'm often the only non-Korean customer (which I like). I've watched them prepare and they are very clean, most of them wear masks and all wash hands often. The more you order, the better the deal is, they have truly excellent pricing on party platters. When you call in an order it is always ready on time or earlier. It's definitely one of the more affordable places in the area for solid quality sushi, but after having experienced Lawrence Fish Market, I can't say that it's better. It is pricier than Lawrence and the quantity of food just wasn't as much. I ordered a dragon maki (lunch special), orange roll, and rainbow roll. Their specialty is definitely more the sashimi, so I'd go that route again in a heartbeat. Their orange roll was my favorite, but because I really love salmon sashimi. If you're not as big a lover and like variety, then the rainbow roll is probably a better choice. We got salmon avocado, salmon handroll, tuna avocado, and unagi. The unagi wasn't as saucy as mosy =tunagi rolls are which was really nice. I would recommend it for this reason. I'm so sad. I've been coming here since I was a kid and I thought it would be a place I supported forever but I don't know anymore. The prices have gone way up and the quality has gone way down. What was a $40 sashimi tray is now a $55 tray but the number of pieces has gone down as well as the size of the sashimi cut. The california rolls are also badly made now. People don't necessarily come here because the quality is amazing but because the prices were great, but I cannot say it is worth it anymore. The fish is fresh and good quality. The amount of rice is just right and cooked right too. It's also made fresh as well. If you dine in a the tea and coffee is free. A great place to grab a sushi fix and for the cheap too, $7.50 for lunch special G. The place wasn't overly busy, which I sort of expected being lunch and their great deals. I was hungry for some sushi today, so I called in my order and picked up today for our lunch with my family! They are available for carry out ONLY during the Covid-19 crisis! It was painless ordering and pick up was a breeze! I parked in the back of the restaurant, walked in (with face masks) and gave them my name and paid with my credit card! They had a huge bottle of sanitizer on the counter so you can use it after you use their own to sign your bill! They showed you what's in the carry out container before they put it in the plastic bag, just to be sure it's the correct order! (I thought that was pretty smart)! The owner's son at this place doesn't even acknowledge me when customers make eye contact, and rarely responds when we greet him. They only give one or two napkins and always ask if I need chopsticks. Are there more customers who don't use chopsticks or those who do? One time I asked why they ask if I need chopsticks, and he replied with an annoyed look, "Because some customers don't use chopsticks!" They talk like they're considering the customers, but their usual attitude and how they hand out napkins show their true character. At long last I finally made it to Dempster Fish Market on where else Dempster Ave. They have moved 2 doors to the west in the same strip mall to the NE corner of Dempster & Marmora. I never went to old location, but from what the previous reviews said there was very limited seating. The new location while not huge it has 6 tables of 4, plus a couple of stools by the front window facing Dempster Avenue. I arrived just after noon and parked in the back lot. There is also street parking along Marmora w/entry off of the back parking lot and off of Dempster Avenue. They have a very efficient use of space as the entire restaurant is filled w/serving area and food prep on the east w/a central corridor that goes from the parking in the back to the front entry. The seating area is to the west of along Marmora Avenue. They have a very nice selection of sushi, everything from individual pieces of sushi to individual rolls, to lunch specials to party trays. Their sushi is good quality & the prices are very reasonable. I ordered the double A-A. This comes w/a 6 piece California roll, 2 pieces of sake, 2 pieces of hamachi, 1 ebi, 1 maguro, 2 pieces of ?? all for $10. You go in order, pay and grab a seat and wait. The restaurant seating was full when I went in, but as I placed my order a table for 4 cleared out and I grabbed a seat and waited. A young lady that also placed an order also sat at my table. The nice thing is that people seemed to cycle in and out pretty quickly so there is seating available. Delicious, high quality sushi and a great value. Both the best and the cheapest sushi that I have had for years. Simple stuff, fancy stuff, they do it all really well, for surprisingly low prices. Parking in the rear, so convenient. Closed for two weeks in late June & early July, not so convenient. But hey, everybody deserves a break. I just had to go to Plan B that day. read more
