Two Dragon Maki, one unagi maki, and one cucumber and avocado maki.
    Sigmund K.

Been here a couple of times now, mostly for lunch since they have decent lunch specials. Prices have gone up over the years, although that's pretty standard for a lot of places. They have a small parking lot in the back and street parking available as well, and you can enter either through the back or front. Interior is on the smaller side but there's a good amount of seating still. They have an area with a water dispenser that has both hot and cold water as well as free tea bags. I went with my parents and toddler on a weekday afternoon and there were three other people in there. We ordered the Lunch Special set G, two Dragon Maki, one unagi maki, and one cucumber and avocado maki. I also ordered a fried shrimp maki later but forgot to get a picture of it. All the ingredients appear fresh and tasted great, though it seems to be on the smaller side portion-wise (maybe that's just me). Definitely one of the better sushi places around here though and I appreciate that they're not closed in the early afternoon until 4ish like a lot of other sushi places do. Can't wait to go back for more!

    Sushi wraps.

We were in the area in between running errands and wanted a snack. Ordered a few different sushi wraps. We were drawn to the price at $3.50 to $4 each. The sushi was fine but a wrap is tiny , and if you spend $12, it's a snack, nothing more, not exactly a cheap snack. Oh, and service is gruff...

Lunch combo A and unaki handroll

If you're in a pinch in the burbs and craving sushi, this might hold you over. While certainly on the cheaper end for sushi, not sure it's comparable to other go-to carry out spots in the city... like Lawrence fish market. I got a lunch combo that came with 12 pieces of nigiri and a tuna roll and added in an unaki handroll. The nigiri was fine, the most flavorful being the salmon, everything else was sort of bland. What I did like was each nigiri piece had wasabi on it between the fish and the rice... just like how they prepare it in Japan. The tuna roll was ok, again, not too much flavor. The unaki handroll was a pleasant surprise, not as sweet and nice and tender. I'd go back and order more handroll to try. Run by a nice older Asian couple and the lunch crowd was decent. Parking in the back and can walk through the back door or go around to the front. Nice, no frills sushi spot if you're in a pinch and in the burbs.

    Kappa Maki And Oshinko Roll

For this little not so good looking place it's better than to be expected. It has a pretty big sushi menu and they make it fresh in front of you. Dempster Sushi is one of the better restaurants in Morton Grove. Has parking in the back and I can walk in the front. The prices are really good on freshly made rolls and these are pretty okay portions. Came in for lunch to get sushi cheap. It's certainly a place for that, but it's not like the garbage from a gas station thankfully so you still get some quality from here. The prices are amazingly cheap so you can get a lot. It's about $3 for the cheapest. Vegetable rolls are the cheapest, and we got a few of these. Kappa Maki is one with cucumbers. Oshinko Roll is one with pickled radish. Both were a pretty good size for the cost. They are friendly and get the stuff out fast yet still it tasted like it was expertly crafted and fresh. Good enough we could come here again. It's a place that doesn't look like much from the outside and the inside. This is nothing fancy but even so it's good taste at affordable prices and okay portions so you get what it's worth.

We mainly do takeout platters here (and occasionally eat in during lunch), but this is our local spot for sushi/maki. The prices are good, the food is fresh, and the service is spot on. You need to order ahead for platters, but that is not uncommon. The menu is more classical than traditional and it certainly doesn't have the increasingly outrageous creations of more modern, hipper spots. Of course I like the crazier rolls too, but classic style has its appeal - especially if you're looking for volume and value. The dine-in area is small, but clean and modern. It feels like you're very close to the action of the food prep. I remember how it was before they moved two doors down. This is a huge upgrade. Sushi lady (I know she probably definitely has a name) and her team work very hard. She always greets me kindly and remembers way too much about my order history. Thanks, sushi-lady!

    Hwe Dup Bap

This is a small hole in the wall-ish counter serve sushi restaurant with really good lunch specials. The food quality is decent, I would say about average. The service is straightforward and average as well. I got the Hwe Dup Bap, which is assorted sashimi over rice and vegetables seasoned with a gochujang-like sauce and sesame oil. The price ($12 pre-tax) was really good compared to other places I've seen and had this dish, which are usually around $20. The cuts of fish were pretty small and thin, so I'd definitely only get this dish during the lunch special. I've also tried their sashimi platter, where the fish was good but also very thin. Overall I'd recommend this place if you're craving sushi and want something on the more affordable end, especially during lunch. I would probably not come in any other situation.

So tired of spending a small fortune on restaurant sushi for a family of 4 when the kids want something other than Jewel sushi. I tried this place because the prices looked good. So was the sushi. A lot of sushi for under $80. Everything was pretty fresh and tasty. 2 Boston (tuna) maki, 2 fried shrimp maki, 2 rainbow maki, 2 salmon maki, 1 Alaskan and several sashimi pieces.

I've had this place bookmarked for a very long time, and finally got to try it. At one point, if I'm not mistaken, it was called Dempster Fish Market, which I'm not sure if it has any association with Lawrence Fish Market, which if you haven't tried that place, its fantastic. In either case, based on the name, this is why I decided I needed to try Dempster Sushi. From the outside, this place can look slightly intimidating, because you can't really see the inside, from outside. But, there's nothing to be scared of. Walk in, and its just like any other friendly eatery. The menu is on flat screens mounted on the top, and you can pick a variety of sushi, sashimi, and maki. They have several lunch specials to choose from too, only available Monday-Friday, at certain hours. They are about $3-4 cheaper when so. Since it was Saturday, I didn't get the lunch specials. Tell the person behind the counter what you want, pay, and grab a seat. The dining area is cozy. It had about six tables, somewhat close together. There is also a water dispenser, if you want water. Instead, I went with the: - Rainbow maki. The rainbow maki had cucumber, avocado, tuna, fluke, salmon, shrimp, tai, and crab meat. When trying somewhere new, I usually gravitate toward this since it has a combination of most of the fish, which will give you an indication of the freshness of things. - Alaska maki. The Alaska maki was simple. It had salmon, avocado and it had six pieces The sushi came out really fast. People were nice, the price was nice, and the overall experience... nice. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located past the kitchen, past the "staff only" door, the bathroom is located on the right, near the backdoor. It is a single-person bathroom, unisex. There was a toilet, a sink, somewhat cramped, but got the job done. Sit or squat? Squat.

Great little no-frills sushi place, super reasonably priced lunch specials. Would be challenging for large groups, but their party trays look pretty good. -1 star for styrofoam plates. I've had real plates there before so I don't know if it was a one-off thing.

Spicy Tuna roll, Alaska Roll, Crunch Roll (B)
    Tiffany T.

Dempster Sushi is a decent sushi spot in Morton Grove. I ordered for takeout: Spicy Tuna Maki Alaska Maki Crunch Maki (B) The sushi is decently priced and tasty. The tuna and salmon in the rolls were fresh and I enjoyed the flavors of each roll. When I opened my box, the spicy tuna Maki was kind of falling apart and didn't look rolled as well as the other Maki rolls. It tasted good though. The spicy mayo had a slight kick to it and I was glad I asked for it. The Crunch Maki was pretty worth the $7. It had: Cucumber, Avocado, Sesame, Seaweed, Salmon, Sushi Rice, Crunch, Spicy Sauce, Unagi Sauce. I liked the flavor and tempura crunch. It tasted fresh and it tasted good on its own (without the soy sauce)! As for their service, I thought it was okay... While I was in the middle of ordering at the counter, the employee/manager left to answer the phone. He came back and was taking their order over the phone in front of me. Then, he asked me and my friend to wait in our car with the buzzer, even though there were no other customers in the restaurant. It just seemed like a lot... I'm definitely interested in trying the other crunch makis. For how close the restaurant is, and the price, I'll be back. I just hope the customer service will be a little better.

    Sushi Combination C

Had some dempster sushi delivered to us from a friend. The sushi was presented really lovely on a huge tray, with ice layers on top. This kept the sushi at the right temperature during transport (so definitely something that I'll ask for next time I do a takeaway order on my own). The selection was great this time. Sushi combo D. My friend told me once the "D" stood for delicious. I must agree that it definitely was! We had enough leftover for one more serving for that late night sushi *ahem "sushi sleepwalker" in our family. Combo D had shrimp, salmon, tuna, unagi, tamago, squid, surf clam, snapper, tako, a cali roll, and I think hamachi. It's really a significant jump from combo C to D as to the quantity as it goes from a 12" to a 16" tray- we had no leftovers with combo C (feeling satisfied), but had enough to fill a personal size container with the D in (and be stuffed). I really like how much wasabi and ginger they provide with this tray. I love the ginger as it allows my tongue to savor the next bite. I find that leftover sushi needs to be left out for a bit to let the rice come back to temperature from the fridge, otherwise, I feel the rice would be too hard/cold. Good times!

Can't believe I've been missing out on this place for so long. I've been on a sushi drought for the last year, unable to go out and meet up with friends for sushi and married to someone that doesn't eat seafood. About a week ago I had a craving for all things seafood and finally decided to get something just for myself (don't worry, hubby didn't go hungry). I ordered the Unagi bap, Crunch series C, and spicy salmon. It was so good and hit the spot. Unagi bap is much like Unagi don rice with Unagi and Unagi sauce. The crunch series was yummy and filling. And the spicy salmon was simple. You get a pretty good deal compared to most sit down places that charge over $10 for most rolls, here that's more the exception. I hear also the party trays are an even better deal and come with tons of food!

Sushi/maki tray for 4-5 people. Curbside pick up!

While quarantined during Covid-19 my family has been looking forward to our takeout and delivery meals on Friday and Saturday evenings. On Sat morning I had food envy when I saw the delicious looking sushi that Luke S had enjoyed for dinner before. I was inspired to order dinner that evening from Dempster Fish Market. There are 2 meals my kids will never turn down- pizza (which we had the night before) and sushi. They begged for a sushi tray so they could try many different rolls. Strangely they are only adventurous when it comes to sushi. The price of a sushi tray from here was even more affordable that some of our recent orders for our sushi loving family of 5...and so I agreed. I called Dempster that afternoon and they said a 2 hour lead time for a tray was ideal and so I called back 2 hours before I needed it. I ordered the sushi & maki tray since it had a lot of rolls that I knew my kids would like. Most were simple- the most extravagant being the dragon roll. When I arrived I called to let them know I arrived. A woman, who I believe was the owner, came out in a mask to deliver the tray right into the passenger seat of my car. One look at this massive tray and I feared a lot of it would be going to waste since sushi never appeals to me on day 2. However, my hungry kids got right to work on it and we finished the entire tray. They were in heaven with their usual favorites- salmon sushi, california rolls...and also found some new loves such as a soft shell crab roll. As soon as we finished my daughter asked if we could have the same exact dinner the following night. 2 nights in a row may be a bit extravagant for these days, but I promised we'll order another tray from Dempster Fish Market soon!

There is easy street parking available, but I was walking so did not need any parking. The restaurant space has plenty of tables and was clean. There were a few tables sat when I walked in. There are no signs to wait for host/seat yourself, so I stood at the front for a few minutes before who I think is the owner actually ended up coming up and helping. He was running around, very busy, helping prepare and serve the food to the tables that had already ordered. I asked if I could just place an order to go and just ordered a Pad Thai for carry out. The food came out honestly very quickly for just one person in the kitchen plus the owner, and with other tables already with tickets in, but I would not necessarily say this is a super fast in and out experience if you're in a rush. The take out container was packaged in a thick brown bag (no breaking through the bottom of the bag on the walk home here!) and the owner cashed me out himself. He was very kind but did not really engage in any of the small talk I attempted while waiting for the screens to load and payment to process. The Pad Thai was packed super neatly and cleanly in a plastic take out box. The serving size was deceptively large, and they pack in a heavy serving of noodles and bean sprouts and your protein of choice (chicken for me!) into this little box. I was shocked at how fresh everything tasted! This was a perfect Pad Thai and I will absolutely order this a million times over living right down the block. There were plenty of fresh bean sprouts, the noodles were cooked perfect, it wasn't dry or drowning in sauce, a little lime wedge on the side and I was a happy camper. I can't wait to come back and try more menu items, their amazing lunch specials, and support a local business. Thank you, Mai Thai and Sushi!
