I absolutely love Roka Akor. Every other month I'm at Old Orchard and while they have a number of restaurants most are just OK. My sister and I had lunch there a few weeks ago. Their actual lunch menu is small but I believe you can order from the dinner menu as well. We ordered Seasonal Vegetable Tempura Set and Crunchy Spicy Tuna Maki, Salmon Avocado Maki, 2pc Chef Selection Nigiri. They each come with a substantial salad and prime beef and kimchi dumplings. Wow. What an experience. We sort of went overboard when visiting Roka Akor but it was a fabulous experience. We were a party of six with two birthdays. This was supposed to be special, and it was. We were seated right away in a nice spot. The server immediately brought our menus and we were served water and asked about drinks. Rola Akor serves either for sharing, or will deliver an individual entree. They are also outstanding at dealing with food allergies! They really take it seriously. We ordered a lot - we started with three maki rolls - Crispy Prawn Unagi, Salmon Avocado, and Kani Sake - all were fantastic. For our shared entrees we had Prime Skirt Steak (8oz), Sweet Garlic Soy, Teriyaki Chicken Breast, Shiitake Mushrooms, Yuzu Miso Marinated Black Cod, Pickled Red Onion, and Chilean Seabass, Ginger Jalapeno Sauce, Fresh Shaved Vegetable Salad. We also ordered vegetables - Broccolini, Ginger Shallot Dressing, Sweet Corn, Soy, Butter, and Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Wafu, Mustard, Bonito Flakes. Not sure if it was because we came to Roka Akor in the suburbs, but it was definitely low-quality "sushi", and some of the lamb cutlets were tasty but overcooked, even though we had asked for it to be medium rare. The prime skirt steak was tasty, and it was cooked perfectly. Also, we noticed a really bad smell when we were seated. Almost like sewage/bathroom smell--and we were nowhere near the bathroom, so that was a little disconcerting. Our table was also sticky, which made us wonder if it had been wiped down. Had a great Valentine's Day menu here at Roka! It's my first time visiting this location but I frequent the Oakbrook location a lot. The were very accommodating due to the water issue on actual Valentine's Day and so glad we were able to go and experience this! The first and second course were INCREDIBLE -- yellowtail jalapeño with a delicious sauce, the beef and the amazing truffle sauce, just so flavorful. The hamachi Serrano roll is the best on the menu in my opinion and they portion and coursed out very well. I've been here a couple times, came tonight to celebrate with girlfriends (table of 4) we got to the restaurant 10 min before when I thought our reservation was, at 5:30, I was mistaken; it was at 5 (that's on me) they still sat us. Food was great, we shared a bunch of items, ordered apps and wanted to wait until we were done with them to order our mains. Our server came over and informed us "my manger told me you'll need to order because you're sitting too long". Um, excuse me? I get you want to turn the table, but basically telling me to leave? So we ordered our mains, the busboy/person came by right away and cleared all our plates- it all felt really rushed. Mind you, the restaurant was not full. When we left, how long were we there that we were holding up previous reservations? 1 hour. We dined for 1 hour. Ridiculous to tell us to rush out. My first time at this restaurant. Upon entering the ambiance was pleasant, the decor soothing, minimalistic colors and clean lines. Smaller dining area for larger groups, we sat outside as a group of 2. Our waiter was Miguel, best waiter I've had since I started yelp. He was pleasant, knew every dish and ingredient inside and out and where it came from, and how it was to be prepared. Fabulous. The miso soup was what I would expect a miso soup to taste like. It made my stomach feel at ease because I have a sensitivity. The cod was pickled but not too abrasive, just perfect. I chose the teriyaki chicken for dinner. I like the idea that it was sliced and part of the bone was left as if sliced from the chicken. The teriyaki was nice to dip in, and I quite enjoyed the mushrooms. I did have a chocolate desert, it was very good, but the highlight of dinner was the purple dessert. Absolutely my favorite item I ate. Everything was really fantastic, but the purple dessert was tops! I have a wheat and dairy intolerance and everything I ate was free from those components. I will definitely come here again. The rating is 5 stars, I will forgive for the Passion fruit hisbiscus drink that I feel should be dropped from the menu stat. I wish I could have returned it, but I gave it a shot. Best sushi selections I have experienced in a long time. The creativity of rolls were second to none! Not sure which of my 2 rolls was my favorite as each had unique content and extremely flavorful. The Spicy Big Tuna roll was as unique as it was delicious! Included my favorites - tuna and avocado - but flipped the script with the fried rice at bottom. The texture alone was worth this dish. Tuna 4 Ways was flavorful with each bite. Loved the dynamic and would have enjoyed more if brown rice was available. Truly the only missing option for both rolls. My Honor and Glory whiskey cocktail was very pleasing. The logoed Roka cube added a classic, old-fashioned feel. Suntory whiskey will be added to my home bar too. Cannot overlook the service from greeting at the door until departure. Very pleasant staff, and gave me several seating options since I was solo. The patio view overlooked the large parking lot, as the restaurant is located in a plaza my servers were very attentive, and even gave me one of their specialty teas to brew later at my hotel . We returned for a nice little lunch here. Roka does have a nice vibe, an airy space, and a nice background music playlist. Did I say it was nice? Wife ordered a soft shell crab bao, but as they were out of bao's, they put the crab atop a salad and charged us $6 instead of $9, nice, again. She also had their salmon teriyaki lunch set ($26) and I had their chirashi bento set ($24). Both lunch sets came with a salad as well as 3 prime beef dumplings. I thought her lunch was a good value, and I thought my chirashi serving was on the skimpy side. However, given that it included a salad and 3 dumplings, and for $24, maybe it was more on the ok-grumbling as opposed to skimpy size. Taste was delicious and it was a nice lunch overall in any event. FYI and headsup - the booths are still on the tiny side and I'm not even super-fat. Have been a long time fan of River North Roka Akor and decided to pop into Old Orchard's location to give it a try for lunch. The core menu is pretty much the same which I was happy about. The space overall was much smaller and low key compared to the city. They sat us at tables which were half booth and half chairs but it was quite tight getting into the both side as the tables were only separated by a few inches. We basically felt like we were at a joint table with the other parties which wasn't a big deal for lunch, but wouldn't be ideal if we were looking to have a nice dinner out. As far as food went, we started with the waygu beef dumplings which were good but not as good as in the city. The sushi however was just as good. We ordered 4 types of Nigiri and all weee great. My favorites were the red snapper and Salmon, we also had the hamachi and Chu-Toro. For our roll we ordered the crispy spicy tuna wil Hoch was pretty good as well. To close we had the wood mushroom and truffle hot-pot. I've had this before and while it was good this time around, a lot of the veggies overpowered the dish instead of the truffle and rice as usual. Overall, it's definitely worth the visit especially if you're at the mall and craving sushi! read more

This is a fabulous place. I'm so glad we tried this place. I was craving black cod. Their portion size was quite generous. OMG it was moist, flaky, had a nice smokey flavor from being grilled inside a Ti leaf? We also ordered the salad with Wasabi dressing. The portion also was huge. We had the "Yelp" check in amuse bouche which was a ceviche on slice of cucumber. Wife had the black cod also and the corn which she raved about. I also had the veggie tempura. Roka Akor is one of my families favorites. I always get the big eye tuna, which is basically crispy rice spicy tuna, and the ribeye. The big eye tuna is my favorite crispy rice that I've had. It is perfectly crispy and the tuna is very fresh and tasty. The ribeye is cut into nice bite sized pieces and is perfectly seared. The sauce which is paired compliments the steak very well to make a wonderful bite. My mom always gets the ramen, the broth is very flavorful and there is a pretty large amount of meat that comes inside as well, alongside mushrooms. The sushi is very fresh with minimal sauce. It is not my personal favorite as I think it is pretty bland, but my parents love how fresh the fish is and appreciate the simple taste. Make sure to get the coconut lime sorbet to end off your meal! I've never had such a delicious sorbet and it has the perfect amount of sweet and sour. The restaurant is fairly small has big windows for lots of light. The service is always very attentive and quite fast. You can clearly see the kitchen as well which is always nice. read more

Good food, albeit pricy. We came in for a very late lunch and the restaurant is beautiful, very modern and sleek. It was relatively empty when we stepped in. We were greeted and seated promptly, but after that, service seemed more slow and inattentive. Maybe it was an off day. We got the crispy squid and grilled diver sea scallops for appetizers, and then got a sushi roll (the spicy crispy tuna) and Korean spiced lamb. My favorite item was the squid, to be honest. It was wonderfully crispy and spiced just right, and the accompanying sauce was delicious. The scallops were ok but wildly overpriced...gorgeous for sure, but come on. $17 for two pieces of scallop? (I don't know if it's changed since we dined here but I just checked and it's $22. If it's still just 2 pieces, it is not remotely worth it.) The garnishes didn't add much to the taste. The sushi roll was nothing special, it was well made and simple, a standard spicy tuna roll with a little crunchy bits on the outside. I've been at Roka Akor several times. A friend of mine was in town and treated me to a birthday dinner. She suggested we get the signature omasake. I forgot to take photos of the first 2 or 3 courses. There were so many courses, I couldn't keep up! Lol. First, everyone is given an amuse bouche. Can't remember what it was, but it was tasty. Next 2 were slices of fish (don't remember actually what) and a tataki. Other courses included sashimi, a roll, steak, tempura shrimp, brussels spout, mushroom hot pot and dessert of chocolate lava cake and ube pot au creme. I have to talk about the ube pot au creme!! Omg-it was sooooo good! I would go back just to eat that! It was purple, flavorful, silky texture and subtly sweet. A must get! If you order the omasake, bring your appetite. I brought home so much food. We couldn't finish. I'm sad because I somehow forgot to pack up the cake. Everything was fresh and well seasoned. I'll be honest, I don't love fish. I do love shellfish. But I enjoyed everything. The sashimi plate came with a lot of white fish so I only recommend it if you like white fish. Both the brussels and shrimp were crispy. The steak was tender and beautifully cooked. As many times as I've been to Roka Acor over the years, I've never eaten anything I disliked. Service was top notch!! A bit pricey but the combination of tasty dishes with beautiful presentation, combined with fast and friendly service make this a great place to enjoy a special meal. Here are my thoughts on some items I've tried: Crispy squid - Super tender with a perfectly crisp batter and nice light spice. The fresh chili combined with a light touch of lime for brightness help to make this a well balanced dish. The red chili aioli is slightly sweet with a good kick that makes it delicious. Shrimp tempura - Comes crispy with plenty of shrimp though I wish it wasn't broken up into so many small bits. The batter is also a bit light on flavor so that it depends on the aioli for the majority of the flavor. Hamachi serrano chili maki - Wow, very fresh and savory tasting. All the elements surrounding the fish really help to elevate the flavor of the fish. Very well designed and probably my favorite dish. Soft shell crab maki - Wonderful mix of textures. The other elements in the dish don't really detract from the crab flavor. Crispy brussel sprouts - I'm not a big brussel sprout fan but this dish has given me a life altering experience with this ingredient. The tender texture in this preparation is excellent and I can really get a nice fire grilled flavor. The bonito flakes are also equally strong in flavor, adding a nice saltiness and good umami. Overall, it's not cheap but the food is delicious and memorable. read more
