We came in after shopping at the Fashion Outlets mall -- I had zero interest in food court food that day -- so Shakou was a convenient nearby option. Located in Park Ridge, there is ample free street parking so that's really convenient. I ordered the ramen, which isn't usually my go-to at a non-specialty ramen place, but I was in the mood and we were already here. It was fine, but not something I'd return specifically for. The sushi, as usual, is great. Husband ordered the poke bowl, and that ended up being the standout of the meal. Really generous amount of sushi-grade fish and lots of fresh, bright ingredients. My parents split a dolsot bibimbap. The serving size was large and delicious. Overall, a perfectly good dinner, but next time I'd stick to sushi or the poke bowls.

Good sushi, and a lot of options to choose from. Like their specialty sushi items Dont choose the high table option because the table and chair ratio is off and is difficult to eat on lol

If you've been to any other Shakou location in the Chicago suburbs - this is a very similar experience with a more upscale and trendy vibe, varied menu, reasonable prices, and a large dining area. Perhaps the one area this restaurant seems to be a bit worse in is service, which feels a little slower than I typically expect. However this still works well as a place to take friends and family if you're not in a rush and casually enjoying drinks. Food here is always solid, with high quality ingredients and fun presentation that's generally quite colorful and artsy. If you're craving sushi, you'll find higher than average quality ingredients with their fish cuts or other seafood like scallops. But they're generally good in anything you try from the salad with a delicious miso ginger dressing and crisp vegetables to the tender bulgogi with equally tender grilled veggies. Shrimp and scallops are grilled nicely, though the portion size is a bit smaller compared to other dishes. Dessert here like the chocolate lava cake and exotic mamba aren't bad, but it's not quite as refined or satisfying as I'd expect for the price (a few dollars less than a full entree). Overall, another solid Shakou location to go with friends and family. The atmosphere is good, service can be slow and times, and food is generally delicious.

Try the early menu for some of the best deals in town! We always have a great meal here, whether sushi, shrimp or salmon it's always prepared with meticulous attention to detail. And hot food is served hot and cold food is served cold, a very important restaurant metric. Bh the way, did I mention the terrific house salad, too!

My husband and I met some friends at Shakou on a Sunday for dinner. When we arrived at 5:30 the restaurant was about one-third full. With the crowd size we were disappointed with the slow service we received. I ordered the scallops and jumbo shrimp and my husband ordered the bulgogi. The shrimp were not jumbo and I was disappointed with the size of the scallops but they did taste really good. The bulgogi was really well flavored and the vegetables cooked to be crispy. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake. I could tell that this had been sitting for a while since the ice cream and whipped cream had melted by the time it got to us. The flavor of the lava cake could have been much better, especially for a $13 price tag. It was not very moist. There are a lot of good things at Shakou but there are many things that could be improved upon.

I recently came in for dinner on a weeknight. I was promptly greeted by the hostess and taken to a table. My friend that I was dining with, of course, was running late. I appreciated that Server Elisha continued to check on me. Her customer service was above excellent throughout my visit. I asked her some questions about the menu, and she was very knowledgeable. The atmosphere of the restaurant was almost club like. It felt very clean and welcoming. Portion sizes were decent. Prices were upon average of sushi restaurants in Chicagoland. There was some street parking in front. However, as there are multiple restaurants located on this block, I parked around the corner. I would recommend!

This is one of the best spots in PR for dinner. The food is delicious. They have great entree options, a huge sushi menu and the service is fantastic. There is great music in the background that creates a fun vibe for a night out. There is bar seating and the bar staff make good cocktails.

    Black Widow Roll - OTG

If you don't watch yourself, it's almost too easy to pay a hundred dollars per person at Shakou - sometimes more if you have an expensive taste. Then again, you're paying for the high quality of the sushi and sashimi here. The two rolls I had were the Black Widow and the Niku Niku, both beautifully presented and aesthetically pleasing. It's unfortunate that this restaurant is so dimly lit where it will dilute and dull the wondrous array of colors of the rolls if you don't put your flash on while capturing a photo. It's sushi etiquette to eat each piece in one bite, yet in practice that nicety seems to be quite difficult with the portion sizes here...and if you have a small mouth like I do. Sure, eating it in two bites will make the highly packed rice crumble, but it also leads you to savor and appreciate the detecting subtle flavor and texture. Now, the Black Widow roll was decent, though I was expecting a bigger flavor profile. The fat, sliced scallops that lay on top of each piece adds a bouncy and firm texture, but I wish I could remark more on the taste. Yes, the scallop adds a buttery, delicate, and somewhat sweet flavor, but the entire rolls is disappointing as it didn't meet its potential to be layered with a world of wondrous flavors from the unagi sauce, tobiko, eel, or mayo. If anything, the roll was more memorable with its distinct mouthfeel and presentation. The Niku Niku roll was much more enjoyable, and my favorite from the two. Each bite is soft enough, but when compressed by the act of eating, the NY strip inside rebels with its tough and chewy attribute. The chili oil brings out a nice smoky heat that isn't necessary a burning sensation, but pleasantly spicy. The rest of the ingredients - the avocado, rice, vegetables, and soy paper - are naturally mild where the chili oil becomes the star of the show. All things considered, the classy and upscale atmosphere is appealing for a night out. Still, in terms of flavor profile, BluFish may have a competitive edge in this neighborhood.

Enjoyed a nice evening. I went to the Shakou in Naperville a few years ago that has since been shut down. We ordered spicy edamame to start and miso soups which were good. The edamame was VERY spicy and came in a large portion. We stuck to rolls for the evening and ordered the dragon fire (my favorite), ocean drive, and urban heat. The ocean drive roll was my boyfriend's favorite and paired nicely with the two spicy rolls we had and finished clean. Service was a little slower than expected, I had to flag our waitress down a couple times and asked a different waitress about my miso soup but nothing crazy to kill the vibe. Good sushi, it's a bit on the higher end if you're feeling fancy.

Shakou is a solid sushi restaurant with plenty of seating. Perfect for large parties. The service is a bit slow, but not unbearably long. I love the Dragon Fire and Black Widow sushi rolls. The bottom side of the rice of the Dragon Fire is pan fried to crunchy crisp. The Black Widow has a large piece of scallop on top. Both rolls were very unique and tasty! I would definitely order this roll again.

Great posh and swanky place, in the western edge of uptown Park Ridge. Finding street parking on a Tuesday night wasn't too bad. This place is all about modern contemporary design so be careful walking in, as the door and adjoining wall is glass and you don't want to be that guy who walks right into the wall. After you made it past the front glass doors, without smashing your face, you're greeted by the friendly hostess there. The dining area is large, with booths on the left side, tables and chairs in the middle and semi-right, and a large bar area in the right, with a couple of TVs. Not too many, like a Buffalo Wild Wings or Best Buy, but enough to catch up on what the latest sports activity is, while dining and drinking. Our server was really nice, attentive, and explained the specials to us. As of Nov 2022, they are using QR-codes for menus, or they do supply an iPad. We ordered the following: Seaweed salad -- not sure if this was off-menu or not, but I didn't see it on the menu, but the server said it was there. Ordered. It was OK... the seaweed had a sea-taste to it, that was a little overpowered. Served on a bed of lettuce Miso ramen -- we were in the mood for Ramen, so decided to give this a try. They only have one type of ramen, which was this. The ramen had a miso base pork broth with curve egg noodles, topped with fresh bean sprout, fire roasted corn, crunchy bamboo shoot, bok choy, black mushroom and pork belly... which was great! Rainbow roll -- again, my little hack to get a taste of the different sushi... from salmon, tuna, yellow tail. By default, they use spicy tuna, which for an extra $2, we opted for the regular tuna Topped it all off with a couple of yellowtail nigiri, and unagi and the overall dining experience was great!

It's quaint - doesn't have a lot of decor, but it's decent looking. We sat at a two top by the front door and window, but it is next to a short wall with a decorative piece on the shelf so it makes that table kind of private. We were amazed to see how many servers they had working that evening when we arrived 7:30 pm without a reservation. There were probably six open tables and within half an hour the place was completely packed so they had staffed up well with five servers for maybe 15 tables. We enjoyed the ike karaage which is octopus tentacles. They call them squid on the menu, but squid tentacles are much smaller than that. They were crispy on the outside and tender inside. The dipping sauce was super light and fluffy maybe with a tiny bit of lemon and miso and it complemented the karaage very well. We also had the blistered shishito peppers which were dusted with ground red pepper and came with a soy base dipping sauce and a lemon. We thought maybe they would be good with the miso lemon aïoli, but actually they were much better dipped in the soy sauce mixture. My entree was the sashimi salad, which really had an enormous amount of fish. All I could see was tuna and salmon chunks (probably leftovers that could not be used in sushi because of their shape) with a nice mixture of greens and tobiko. It was lightly dressed with a soy, ginger and sesame vinaigrette and very tasty. My husband had the hama chili roll and it was very light but flavorful. The pricing is great and we plan on returning in the near future.

Especially to save anybody else from what we had to endure. We came in for dinner after a long, exhausting day of running errands.... myself, my sister, and my 83-year-old mother. We were seated modestly quickly, which gave us hope. Unfortunately, that was the only thing that went right. Shortly after being seated, a man who appeared to be our server approached us not to take our order, but to tell us he was "too busy" to wait on us and that someone else would come. That set the tone immediately. When another server finally did come over, things didn't improve. It took OVER 15 minutes for Server to acknowledge us, And another 10 minutes just to take our order, while we watched multiple tables who were seated after us being served promptly and efficiently. At that point, we should have left. I eventually received an appetizer, but my mother and sister received nothing. As I sat there awkwardly picking at my food, we watched surrounding tables (who arrived after us), receive full meals before us. We flagged down our server, and only then were we casually informed that my mother's meal had been given to another table. No apology beforehand. No proactive communication. No attempt to correct it until we had to ask. Let that sink in: an elderly woman sat there (over a hour now), waiting, ignored, while her meal was served to someone else and no one thought to inform us. At that point, we got up and left. The front door staff were the only bright spots. They were polite and immediately got the manager. The manager assured my sister that the situation would be "handled," that we would be contacted, and that some form of recompense would be made for the experience. She was also so apologetic... But her apologies were as devoid is truth as her personality was devoid of any humanity. So her promises that she would reach out that we would be recompensed well...That never happened. No call. No follow-up. No accountability. As for the food? I can't fairly review it because we never actually received it. The small portion of appetizer I did get was nothing memorable, and the sake was honestly subpar. What I can review is the service, (if one can call it that,) and it was abysmal. Disorganized, inattentive, and completely lacking in basic professionalism and respect. Promises were made and not kept, which makes the experience even worse. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are too many places that actually value their customers' time, dignity, and experience. Save yourself the frustration and go elsewhere.

I grabbed a seat at the bar and waited about 10 minutes before the hostess came over. She politely let me know I needed to remove my hat or leave, even though I was tucked away in the corner. No big deal--I took it off... besides the inevitable hat hair! I was hoping to enjoy a glass of Moët or Dom Pérignon, but they don't offer either by the glass or in splits. The bartender recommended their Cava, and even let me sample it, which I appreciated. The only downside was the tasting glass had just come out of the dishwasher and was still warm, which took away from the experience. I ended up ordering the Cava, and it was a pleasant choice. The bartender recommended the Ahi Tuna Tartare, and it was easily the highlight of the meal. Beautiful presentation with vibrant colors, fresh ahi tuna, creamy avocado, sweet mango, and crispy wonton chips. Every bite was fresh, balanced, and packed with flavor. I would absolutely order it again. For my entrée, I ordered the Red King Crab Legs (half pound) for $88, served with garlic butter and garlic mashed potatoes. The crab itself was very good, but the plate leaned a little too heavily on the garlic for my taste. I asked for regular melted butter instead, and while the bartender happily brought it out, it unfortunately arrived cold. Between the cold butter and all the garlic, I didn't end up finishing the dish. The live piano music was a wonderful touch. She was incredibly talented and added to the upscale atmosphere throughout the evening. The service wasn't the best, but it was solid. There were a few small misses throughout the meal, but nothing that completely ruined the experience. I've been fortunate enough to enjoy seafood all over the country, and while Truluck's is a quality restaurant, I'd still rank Joe's Stone Crab in Chicago, Mama's Fish House in Paia, Hawaii, 555 East Steakhouse in Long Beach, and Swan Oyster Depot in San Francisco ahead of it. Overall, it was an okay dining experience. Nothing was bad, but nothing truly stood out enough to make me want to come back. I'm glad I gave it a try, but based on my personal experience, it just didn't live up to the expectations I had for the price point. 4 out of 5 stars. #TheFoodie99
