If you get Dr Ishimaru as your OB consider yourself lucky ! She is hands down one of the best doctors in her field. Her office is located in Redondo right next to the old South Bay hospital. She is the only one out of her group that has their own office so I think that says something. I'm not quite sure why there were some bad reviews on here regarding the office staff but personally, I've had nothing but excellent experience with them. You gotta keep in mind they have a lot of patients so you can't assume that you're the only client that needs help. She is the doctor that is currently scheduled to do my C-section and I hope she ends up doing it as planned because I can feel safe because I am absolutely confident in her abilities as a skilled physician. Pro tip is if you want to see her most of the time versus other doctors I would schedule out as many appointments in advance as possible because she gets booked fast . read more

I was referred to Dr. Ishimaru's office for an urgent matter and have been trying for the past 2 days to reach someone in this office to book an appointment. After being on hold for 15 minutes, someone finally picked up the phone to only immediately hang up on me. This appears to be a common practice with the staff, as even shared by another review dating back to 2 years ago. Dr. Ishimaru was my OBGYN last year during my pregnancy. She is an EXCELLENT doctor in every way. She is very knowledgeable, warm, caring, has great bedside manner, and made me feel very comfortable and at ease during my entire pregnancy. She was also very easy to reach through messages via MyChart and replied back in a very timely fashion. Her office is clean, it's easy to find parking, and her staff is professional and pleasant. The only downside was that she only works on call in L&D one day a week so she wasn't the actual OB to deliver my baby. The other OBs there are also great but ideally I wish it could have been Dr. Ishimaru! She did come to see me afterwards when I was recovering in L&D the next few days and she was SO sweet and answered all my questions. When I searched through Yelp and this doctor came in with high recommendation, I called knowing that it might take as long as a year to make an appointment. That was 2022. My appointment was indeed almost a year later in July 2023. Since then, they've called me 4 times to change. On the last call, they swear they will not change the appointment. It has been almost 2 years and I ended up having to get an appointment in the same office, but with another doctor. I understand a doctor may be popular, but someone who has no respect for her patients' health and time like this speaks for the type of doctor she most probably is. This review is for Dr. Ishimaru's office staff. I made an appointment with Dr. Ishimaru over a year ago (yes, it took that long to get an appointment!). My appointment time was for 10am. When I arrived in Torrance, I was told she had two office locations and that my appointment was for the office in Redondo Beach. I was not aware of that, as no one had informed me that she had multiple office locations. The staff at the Torrance location said they would call over to Redondo to let them know I would be a little late. I arrived at the Redondo office 15 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. When I went to sign in, I was told I was too late and now needed to be rescheduled. I let the office staff know that I was only 15 minutes late and that I was sent to the wrong office location. They then told me that I was actually 30 minutes late and that I was supposed to have arrived at 9:45am. Considering my appointment time was at 10am and I had already filled out all of the patient paperwork online before I arrived, I was quite confused by this. Why would you tell me that my appointment is at 10am if you really want me there at 9:45am?? Would it not make more sense to tell the patient to arrive at the actual time of their appointment? I pleaded with the front desk staff to please let me be seen. I told them I had, had this appointment for well over a year, that I had a prescription that needed to be renewed and that I would really appreciate being seen. They didn't care and told me the doctor was already running behind and had a meeting she needed to get to - so she just could not see me. When I asked to be rescheduled for the near future, I was told she was fully booked until September of next year!! At that point, I was beyond frustrated and told them I would find a different doctor. If you are looking for a doctor that is going to make time for you, where you don't need to make an appointment a year ahead of time to be seen - I recommend you find someone else! Could not believe I was being denied my appointment time and forced to reschedule - all because their office staff did not communicate clearly. read more

This review is long over due. I was referred to Dr. Denise Ishimaru by my Doula as I was not happy with my current OB as I was pregnant. Dr. Ishimaru was one of a kind. It was not hard becoming a patient as they were accepting new patients. It was very easy to schedule all my appointments which I did in advance until the week I gave birth. Her front desk staff could be a little better. Jennifer was always very professional and sweet though. The other receptionist not so much. Some of her medical assistants are not that great either. But these are minor things and am sure they're working on making her whole team better. I never felt pressure into doing anything I didn't want to do (glucose test and vaccines). She always gave me her opinion because I asked for it. She felt like a friend always made me feel comfortable and always there to listen. Once a month they have a "meet and greet" with all the Doctors as you don't know which Doctor will be on call to deliver your baby. Unfortunately, she didn't deliver my Son but her other Doctor did and all went very smooth. LCM, Dr. E. Denebeim & Dr. M. I was referred to Dr. Ishimaru by my perinatologist, he highly recommended her when I told him that I don't feel comfortable with my current gynecologist and was looking for other ones. I'm so grateful he did! I was definitely pleased with the medical assistant at the front, she was pleasant and helpful. The whole office has a good feel. My first impression of Dr. Ishimaru was really great. She made feel comfortable right away and went over my history. We discussed my concerns, expectations and I didn't feel for a sec that she's trying to make the appointment as quick as possible as other doctors do. I had a great experience with Dr. Ishimaru. I visited her as a new patient couple of weeks ago. My wait time for this first visit was about one month or so. I thought that's long time but by reading yelp review, I assume that Dr. Ishimaru is pretty popular doctor and wait is inevitable. Dr. Ishimaru is absolutely incredible! And I say that after meeting her just twice. From the start of my prenatal care, she was the doctor who I really tried to get appointments with because of the great reviews I read on her. Unfortunately was never able to book with her because she was basically always fully booked (not surprisingly). Throughout my pregnancy I mainly saw Dr. Richey (who is also amazing) as well as Dr Chu (love her!!) and other doctors on the team. However, Dr Ishimaru ended up being the one delivering my baby! I love Dr.Ishimaru. When I had my son in April 2014, I switched from other OB to Dr. Ishimaru, and believe it was a very wise thing I did. Since everybody loves the doctor, the appointment is very hard to make but I think it's worth. She is always calm, hear your concern, and makes you at ease. Very thoughtful and caring. She always ask me what I want to do and but when I ask for her suggestion she always answer from her own experience as a mother as well. I was desperate of finding new OBGYN since my other dr. closed. My very first OBGYN retired and second Dr. was closed.. Therefore, I Haven't gone my regular check up for 2yrs. Can't believe I haven not written about her. My former OB from San Pedro decided to get a job at a different place, and he dropped the news when I was 20 weeks preggo with my second kid. He was an amazing OB/Surgeon and I was in crisis mode, as I have had him for a very long time and he's gone through a Myomectomy and a C-section with me and I was scared to try to find a new doctor. He told me that he wanted to make sure I get referred to a good doctor, and in Torrance area, there are three doctors that he'd refer me to. They were: Dr Ishimaru, Dr Kwok, and Dr Richey. Turns out Dr Ishimaru is also my sister in law's OB and I heard so many great things about her, so I decided to go with Dr Ishimaru. She is one of the best doctors I have known throughout my life. With every single bump in my pregnancy, and my craziness (especially with raging hormones), she helped me get through every single one of them and didn't make me sound like I was crazy. My second C (I can only do a C-section due to a very invasive Myomectomy I had before having kids. I am lucky I get to have kids, even) was tough as usual, but I was able to survive out of it thanks to Dr Ishimaru. BTW, Dr Richey also stopped by at the hospital room as well, when I was recovering from my C. Dr Ishimaru and Dr Richey work together. She was awesome, too, and I was glad to get to have Dr Richey as the one on duty if Dr Ishimaru was not available. Her practice has gotten really busy, though, not that she wasn't busy before, but even busier nowadays. Make sure you let plenty of time before trying to set up an appointment, like months in advance. Wish she wasn't so busy, but I am glad that such a great doctor is spreading a lot of love to lots of people. read more

I'm having some health challenges right now and really wanted a good doctor to help me figure out what's going on, but when I called and asked if I could get in as soon as possible, the receptionist told me too bad cause I'm a new patient and I would have to wait until March. While I love Dr. Ishimaru, there are a few things that have made me reconsider her as my physician: The nurses tried to shame me into getting an optional pregnancy procedure because "all of Dr. Ishimaru's patients do it." You cannot guarantee getting to see your own doctor since she joined the Providence group. I never had problems booking appointments 1 month in advance, but now I am lucky if I can book 2-3 months in advance. Emergency visits went from fairly accessible to never accessible. A nurse practitioner is the best they offer (not to knock nurses, but they are not MDs.) Availability of a physician you have had for 7+ years should never feel like you must struggle just to be seen. Her Redondo Beach staff are rude and disrespectful and talk to my husband the way a car mechanic would talk to a woman who knows nothing about cars. He is a male, but that does not make him ignorant about everything female. read more

Thought I would give an update now that we have our daughter. The birthing experience was wonderful with Dr. Ishimaru. She came by the hospital that morning when we were admitted before she went to the office, came by during her lunch break to sit with us for a while, and then came back after work to help deliver our baby. She was patient, encouraging, and reassuring the whole time. My husband and I loved working with her and hope to have her deliver our other future children too! read more

She is very warm and friendly, I never feel rushed and I feel like her philosophy is similar to a midwife. We didn't get to deliver with Dr. Ishimaru because she wasn't on call that day/hour--but Dr. Richey was great too--we were super happy with our experience. Dr. Ishimaru is absolutely wonderful. She saw me through two pregnancies start to finish and delivered two beautiful babies for me. I couldn't possibly say enough about how much respect my husband and I have for her, and how much she has in return for her patients. She went out of her way to ensure that my deliveries went how I wanted and that my and my babies health were protected. I think the highest compliments I've heard for her though are from the nurses at Little Company of Mary. They LOVE her. One nurse told me that several of the younger OB nurses (who are having families) have seen how patient she is with her patients' deliveries and have switched to her themselves. So many of the nurses went out of their way to compliment her work. To the reviewer who gave 1-star without actually having seen the doctor, I would encourage this person to remember that OB schedules can be unpredictable. I'm sure this same reviewer would appreciate that their OB would stop by if it were them in labor. That being said, in countless appointments in the last three and a half years, the only one of mine that Dr. Ishimaru missed was when she was delivering her own baby. read more

I had a terrible first impression of Dr Ishimaru's practice. I was a first time patient and made an appointment about a month and a half early, as this was their first available appointment. The day of my appointment arrived, I had taken the day off work for the appointment and called to confirm it. I arrived at the Dr office early so I could fill out new patient forms, but waited a half hour for the door to open as it was locked (even though I was told to come in early at that time by the office).When I walked in and waited a while I had to ask for the new patient forms, as the receptionist didn't acknowledge anyone, and seemed annoyed when I asked. I proceeded to fill out my paperwork and about 45 minutes after my appt time was told that the Dr called, was at a meeting and to re-schedule. I was pretty upset, because I had taken a day off work for this, AND confirmed my appt that morning with them. It was as if it was no big deal to them for me to just re-schedule. The Dr office could have called earlier to let me know that she may not be able to make my appt (due to a meeting), or had me see another Dr since I was already there. I decided to leave and never completed my paperwork, as it didn't seem the practice was very organized. I never heard from the Dr's office again, no follow up etc... obviously they don't care that they lost business with me, as well as any referrals I would have provided for them. Dr. Ishimaru is a great doctor -- she listens and cares about you. You don't feel like you're part of a factory where they just turn over patients. As a result of her being so good, she's very busy so it's difficult to get an appointment with her. Her performance as a doctor merits five stars, but the appointment scheduling line she uses gets 1 star. Many times during office hours, you get a message that they're not there. So you leave a message and you don't get a call back. Ever. If you're lucky enough to get through, you'll be on hold for at least 15 minutes before you get to talk to someone. It's not like I'm not used to getting dissed by vendors. There's not a lot of pride and honor in people's work ethic. HOWEVER, what I find completely infuriating is when this BS happens in the medical profession. It's one thing for the DMV to act laissez faire -- the medical profession is a whole other playing field. I hope they take heed. I'm a first time mom, and my regular GYN referred me to Dr. Ishimaru for our prenatal care. We're 5 months along with twins, and every visit with Dr. Ishimaru's office has been wonderful! The front office staff are kind, remember who we are, and have also been helpful in answering insurance billing questions. Dr. Ishimaru always takes the time to answer our many questions and is never in a rush. The few times I have called with emergency questions, I always receive a prompt phone call back. She has great bedside manner and always knows how to put an anxious mom at ease. Dr. Ishimaru was my OB throughout my first pregnancy and was everything I could have asked for in a doctor. She inspires trust and confidence and really took the time to listen and talk through any of my concerns. I never felt rushed in the office and was lucky enough to also be able to communicate with her online through the health portal.
