Hidden gem in a small town off the beaten path... pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of each dish. Excellent service! The Fish & Chips is one of the best we've had! Two whole fish fillets (not positive what kind of fish, not cod) and a condiment cup of coleslaw with a lemon wedge. The fish batter was light and crispy, not at all greasy. The sauces could all pass for homemade; full of flavors that work well together.. It comes with either fries or salad for $19.00 *Would order this again :) The Bahn Mi Bowl (minus rice) was initially served with sauce all over the top of the dish. It was just way too much sauce *imo*. The waitress was so sweet and it was no biggie to have it re-made with sauce on the side. The combination of ingredients in the bowl were so flavorful together, that it really didn't need the extra sauce on top. The crispy diced pork belly was marinated and the cabbage was tossed in a ginger soy flavored sauce. The pickled red onions, thinly sliced jalapenos and the lime wedges were a nice bursts of freshness that made the bowl feel filling without feeling heavy. $23 is a little pricey for a raw cabbage based salad, but I'm glad I tried it :) Now that I know that it's here... Great little spot in Etna. Crafty, local distillery, but the food is a step above. The pizzas are excellent, perfect! crust from a large oven. Meat lovers was great and the blueberry was fun and balanced. One brave person tried the ahi. Despite my reservations, it was really good. Tuna was fresh, rice and seasonings style correct. The mayo was good, but honestly I would do more of a spicy aoli with some ginger slivers. Service was top notch! Fast, courteous, and the reservation name is a nice touch. Went there for lunch on a Friday afternoon right when they opened. Burger was phenomenal ( it was the one with the candied bacon jam). Drunken pot stickers were also excellent. It was such a beautiful spring day that I rode past Mt. Shasta; its top covered in a huge Lensic cloud, through the forests and Scotts Valley hay fields rimmed with snow-capped mountains to Etna for brunch at Denny Bar Co. A busy place, especially considering how remote it is, but it is a sophisticated setup with high ratings. Their Etna scramble was very good: pan-fried cubes of potato mixed with some ham, onion and bell pepper covered by scrambled egg that was covered in cheese plus sourdough toast on the side. BLUF - A rare find in an area not normally known for its excellent cuisine. Service 5/5 - I dined at this location twice and the service was consistently cheerful, knowledgeable, and excellent. I had the pleasure of interacting with Sarah who knew not only the history of the location, but all of the tasting notes and intricacies that went into the production of their bobrun, gin, and vodka. I also was able to see a fantastic bartender, Hannah (the anagram) who was able to quickly, accurately, and consistently produce large drink orders with precision and still have time to engage with customers. On my first visit I was genuinely impressed because the entire staff seemed to be a group of great employees who were well lead, executing at a genuinely high level. I have rarely seen this level of service, so the leadership and management should be proud. As a student and advisor for leadership issues, this was a great example of how to do it right. Personality 5/5 - The location is in a historic building that was established during the gold rush years of this small town. It really does a great job of respecting the history (the tables are made from some original floorboards) while showcasing the distillery and the tasting room. I have been to several historic locations across the country that leaned too much into history or were too gimmicky, and the food was not that great. This location definitely strikes a great balance between the two. Quality 4.85/5 - The menu is an interesting collection of offerings that range from what would be considered standards at other excellent restaurants, with a few that reach the level of higher end locations without being pretentious. Everything was delicious, well-prepared, and consistent. My consistency rating is derived from conversations with other locals who said the dishes they ordered were their favorite, and it is the same every time they order it. The reason I did not give a perfect score is that on a few dishes some of my group were a little overwhelmed with the garlic. I think this could easily be fixed by offering "A little" or "standard" garlic. I was delighted with the garlic level, clearly I am not a vampire. Recommendation 5/5 - I believe this is worth a dedicated trip, perhaps not from the other side of the country (but why not it is a unique area), but definitely if you are in a neighboring state (or two) There are plenty of hiking, hunting, fishing, and other outdoor opportunities that could occupy your time in between meals and there are other interesting locations that offer excellent products that would also be worth your attention. My life will never be the same anymore. What an amazing place! We started off with the Burrata - which is an experience in and of itself. But then *drum roll* we had the Wild West Burger. A mix of elk/bison/wagyu and wild boar meat and let me tell you.... I wasn't ready: the heavens broke open, angels literally descended down upon me and my mouth had an other worldly celebration. The Chrysalis mocktail was some sort of glorious sorcery and it tasted so good. By far the best food ever. the one star is for the ambiance. I ordered a gin and tonic and it was served with multiple day old lime that was extremely dry, I asked for fresh cut lime and was given a bowl of half old half newly cut limes. The food was edible but the pizza I ordered had an olive pit. I don't blame them because they were probably canned black olives. Our to go food for the kids was never made so im preparing dinner now and the kids are pissed they didn't get their burgers. This place has so much potential and that is probably the reason I am so let down. This was my first time eating here and I'm kinda disgruntled that I'm cooking dinner right now. Very very mixed experience. The hostess was very rude. We came in with our children and I knew they'd be getting pizza and would just make a mess of the rolled up silverware so I gave it to the hostess saying "we won't need these, we din't want to give you guys extra dishes or work" and she gave we a really weird look and a "ummm okaay" and asked if we would use the napkins on them and I said I could get some napkins separate, honestly I was just trying to save them from doing extra dishes. I know walking in with kids can make some staff uneasy and I'm always thinking about making it all as easy as possible. The pizza is very good, but the clam chowder (which is $27!!!) and grilled cheese are terrible. The grilled cheese has nothing on the grilled part of the bread, no butter or mayo, just dry toasted and the cheese was barely melted. The fries are really neat and tasted good. We are from Monterey, if chowder in a bread bowl is on the menu I'm ordering it, my blood is mostly clam chowder now. It was the worst I've ever had. First, had I known the price I would not have bothered, I saw it on the specials board and didn't look at the menu, just would never occur to me they'd charge that much so I didn't check. I even double checked prices in Monterey to make sure it wasn't an across the board trend, nope, typical is $15-17 which is what I expected. So how was the nearly $30 chowder? I scraped the toppings off because I was there for the soup, I wouldn't put bacon on clam chowder anyway. The texture was glue like, grainy, needed salt, and it was like the ingredients had been ground together to make a rubbery ground turkey like substance. I could not discern any ingredient from the other. The bread bowl was burnt to a crisp and inedible. I had no intention of sending it back or saying anything but when the waiter asked I tried to as nicely as possible say it wasn't for me. The server get's 5 stars, he was always attentive and asked to bring something else. I said no think you (I didn't want to stay too long, never know how long a 3 year old will behave themselves in a restaurant) and he very kindly took the chowder off our check. He was great. I'd come back for the pizza, they should stick to what they do well! The atmosphere is great. We haven't been to Etna in a while and were sad to see the pharmacy gone but this looks like a great gathering place and the community deserves it. And maybe have a chat with the hostess (tall, slim, dark hair in a bun) about her facial expressions and attitude with guests. read more

Hiding out in Scott Valley, the town of Etna is a blast from the past. Farm lands meet the mountains with a stop off from the Pacific Crest Trail make for a unique location for Denny Bar. Everything I've had (except the calamari, tears) was unique, flavorful and exceptional. From burgers and fries to soup, apps and their wood fired pizzas and cocktails- it's all on point! I'm saving the 5th star for my next visit when I actually get to tour and taste their spirits. The last time we were there they recently reopened due to COVID and were not offering tours (for safety reasons). I am a foodie and travel to Napa Valley annually to Micheline Star restaurants to dine and this was "Napa worthy" dining. The BACON & BLEU STUFFED PEARS provided a balance of sweet and savory. The MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN SKEWERS with their varied sides was plentiful-think incredible Greek flavors. The PISTACHIO ALFREDO was a rich flavorful pasta, I wouldn't say I tasted the pistachio but what I did taste was so yummy. Been to Denny Bar many times, but this was the first time in quite awhile. Haven't been happy the last couple times. This time, ordered a "rib eye" steak. The other 3 people in our party tried other things. It was NOT a ribeye. I eat steak a lot, both at home and out. It had no flavor, and ribeyes are so flavorful due to the fat, it was probably a top sirloin they were trying to pass off as something better. Probably will be our last time trying Denny Bar. The food is excellent with big portions and they have a variety of options for meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans alike. My friend and I came to town for a long weekend get away to give him inspiration for writing his vows. While we were driving through town we came across The Distillery. While we didn't know if they served food, we were feeling a little thirsty. When we first walked in we were met with a friendly smile and a warm welcome. Though we didn't have reservations, they made room for us as long as we could give back the table by a certain time. This was already above and beyond but the real magic happened when our appetizers arrived. The brussels sprouts were incredible, the bread was like a chewy cloud, and they brought us an order of firecracker shrimp for free because there was a mistake in the kitchen. Afterwards the manager came over to talk to us and tell us the story of the place. All in all we had ab awesome time here. Service 12/10. Food 12/10. Ambiance 12/10. The distillery in the back is functioning and they do tastings. We loved this place so much we went all three days we were in town. The last day we went for lunch and dinner. Thank you to you all. Went there tonight for the first time. What an awesome place. We did not have a reservation but was still seated promptly. While waiting we went back and did a tasting. Karen was great telling everything and filling us in. Ended up buying three bottles from there. The waitress that I forgot here name caught us as the tasting was ending and seated us. My son bought our dinner for my birthday so I don't have a receipt with her name. We ordered squash blossom appetizer and it was great. Then we had pork chop and spinach ravioli and stuffed lamb shells. The food was superb. The waitress was awesome and Karen rocked it. We will be back! read more
