Getting very expensive. Quality is starting to go sideways. Soups are too salty; really unhealthy (miso to udon).

1. Their fish is sub-par. VERY disappointed in the quality of the tuna, salmon, and eel. Frankly, if a restaurant can't get those basics right then I am definitely not going to try something more unusual like uni. 2. Sub-par sushi rice. There is a definite art to making the rice properly for good sushi. They clearly do not understand this art. 3. This sort of goes with the second point -- the rolls do not stay together. This is another very basic thing for sushi chefs. I am not sure why the rolls here can't stay together unless it is because of how bad the quality of their rice is. 4. This point may not be bad to some people but for me it's a huge turn off. The place is tiny so when it's full the noise from people gets loud. Not a big deal except that they play very loud music over the speakers as well. The combination can be a bit of a headache when you want a nice evening out. If you have never eaten good high quality sushi then you might not notice these points while eating. I can assure you though that there are much better sushi restaurants in town where you can receive sushi without these problems and really taste the difference. Denstesu, for me, seems like buffet sushi at sushi bar prices. What it comes down to is that it just isn't worth the price for quality this bad. That being said here are the good points. Don't expect your typical small rolls, because Densetsu has the tastiest big rolls ever. They're really busy over the weekends, so come early or expect you wait a bit before seating. Seating arrangements are pretty close, so get cozy with your neighbor. The staff are always welcoming and friendly, and are nice. On busier evenings sometimes service is backed up, but I'm naturally a patient restaurant eater. Some might not be so patient. Fish is fresh, and tastes fresh. Couldn't recommend this place more. If you're expecting lightning fast service, this might not be your place. If you're coming for atmosphere, great sushi, and don't mind a reasonable wait, then Densetsu is the place to hit up. This is due to the fact that the sushi is too big; you take one bite and then there's the other half left and everything unrolls onto your plate. The sushi bar was long and there were a number of tables including an outside section. Our waitress was very nice; she left near the end of our shift but was sure to tell us that we would still be taken care of by the staff. I ordered the Pink Dragon roll and had bites of my friends' salmon tower and superman burrito. The Pink Dragon roll (shrimp tempura, crab, and cucumber, topped with tuna, salmon, and avocado) was on the larger side and very delicious. The salmon on the salmon tower was better than most (well one, Chaucer's). And the superman burrito? Literally, a burrito of salmon, tuna, avocado, and crab meat. SO GOOD. I haven't had delicious sushi for over a year. So after reading all the rave reviews about Densetsu and my friend suggesting that we go for lunch today, I was more than ready to go. I went in with an empty stomach and a big appetite, ready to take on the magical place that everyone spoke about. Walking into the restaurant, we were greeted by a sweet waitress and asked where we'd like to be seated. The restaurant was crowded with a lunch diners so we requested to sit at the sushi bar. The friendliest sushi chef greeted us and made our sushi rolls soon after we ordered. The sushi bar staff was really attentive and made sure everything tasted great! I ordered the golden spicy tuna roll and my friend ordered the pink dragon roll. I need a moment to reminisce on the sushi rolls I tasted. Another moment. Sigh.. Oh sweet Jebus, both rolls were delicious. I haven't had quality sushi in so long that this was a pleasant surprise. The pink dragon sushi melted in my mouth and the crunchiness from the tempura on the golden spicy tuna roll was absolute perfection. After one giant and delicious roll, I was as happy as a clam with a full tummy and even happier taste buds. I have no idea why I haven't tried Densetsu before. This Japanese restaurant is situated in a random building. It's a pretty small and cutely decorated place. They serve traditional Japanese cuisine, like your basic udon, donburis, sushi, etc. They have a lunch happy hour where you can get bento boxes, I believe it ends before 3pm so come early! I got the spider roll for $8 dollars and got a beef donburi for $10. My boyfriend got just the chicken donburi and it was $9. I thought the prices were a a bit expensive for what the food was because I thought they would serve small portions but was I wrong. The donburis came with miso soup and a salad! I believe all their entrees came with the complimentary soup and salad. On top of the free soup and salads, the entrees themselves were huge! My boyfriend and I were full from just eating the soup, salad, and sushi roll. So we to-go'd both our rice bowls! TL;DR: Food for the price is good. Place is clean and small. Densetsu has new management now, as of December 2013 or so. I went to eat there for my first time since the original owner, Gina, sold it. I believe Densetsu was a huge hit when Gina was there - she truly was great at running the business and always putting the customer first; she also had a lot of experienced and loyal employees. Now that there is new management, I had the sense right away that Densetsu wouldn't be able to keep their grand reputation for too long. Though the menu is the same and hopefully the food quality and taste will still be good, the service and liveliness seems to have gone down the toilet. As for what I know of the typical customers that go to Densetsu, we already have our expectation of how our experience should be there and I felt that has disappeared. This place is garbage. We tried it because it got so many good reviews and it's just down the street to my place. The fish has been left out, it smells horrible. The service is absolutely the worst I've ever had. Their decor is tacky. Prices aren't even that great. I will never come back here again. We ordered a spider roll (fried, soft-shell crab roll), and what came out was an abomination to sushi everywhere. The entire roll was deep fried. It was cold (it's supposed to be a warm roll), and had this AWFUL fishy disgusting smell. We weren't even given water during our meal, despite asking for it 4 times. We ordered beer which never came. When we asked for our check we ended up waiting another 20 minutes. We left cash because we didn't trust them to bring our card back. Worst service ever. Worst sushi ever. What we ordered could have fed four easily. I like the sushi burrito. It's different, very good and filling. It had tuna and salmon sashimi inside, rice outside and then wrap in rice paper. There's also real paper outside so take that off before eating. hahaha. First timer won't be able to tell the difference between rice paper and regular paper. The crunchy fried roll was very crispy. This review is long overdue. Japanese woman here. Okay you know when you see Asians in an Asian restaurant it must be decent? At least that's how I tend to gauge a new restaurant I haven't been to. Well, let me tell you, everyone seems to come here. Also, the sushi chefs are Japanese. In my experience, it does matter since those especially from Japan are trained for years on end in the art of sushi. You can't just pick this up in a year or two. I've been coming here almost every week to two weeks. I also really adore sushi robata/sushi sake in Richardson, but, it is definitely more expensive and a little further to drive when I just want something quick and easy. This place helped to convert a friend of mine to loving Japanese food. Real sushi does not exist at the China Star. :) Even my dad loved this place when he visited from Hawaii. When Hawaii people approve, you know you have a good thing. They are just spoiled with good asian food, so they know what's what. Plus, they'll give you a straight answer whether you like it or not. I know sushi -- born and raised in Hawaii and enjoyed it in Japan. This place has fresh fish, but, that's not what impressed me. It was the rice! There's so many sushi places that just don't know how to do sushi rice. I don't know what it is, but, it definitely shouldn't be a dense mess. Also, the sushi was artfully arranged, in perfect accordance with the Japanese aesthetic of eating with your eyes. Candy cane roll is the best. Try the sushi omikase if you want something more traditional. Udon is not bad. Soup tastes good. Poke is not hawaiian style, but, still quite yummy. Haven't tried the bento boxes yet. Oyako don is okay. I probably could make it at home, but, when I'm lazy it's perfectly fine. They have a great plum flavored sake that is great for those who don't necessarily love sake. Staff is friendly and welcoming. You'll have them yelling "irrashai" which is what they do in Japan when you walk in anywhere. It means welcome! They'll also yell some form of "arigatto" or thank you when leaving. Servers are really great and the sushi chefs are funny. read more

I like this place. They really care about customer service. We ordered a bunch of rolls and they were delicious. We ordered a Udon because my cousin doesn't like rolls and the udon was really good. The noodles were soft and the soup was a good amount of oil. The rolls I liked were the Spider Roll, Lion King Roll and Volcano Roll. The food was alright, but the service was really awesome. I've been eating at Densetsu for the past 2 years but I'm only now writing a review for this place because this place pretty much speaks for itself. Densetsu is basically my go-to place for sushi. It seems like the best sushi restaurants are Korean owned, ironically enough. The sushi chefs here are very friendly and know how to make awesome sushi. The sashimi is great quality. All their rolls that I've had are amazing. This place is expensive but what quality sushi restaurant isn't? You won't even mind the price because the rolls are HUGE! One roll will definitely fill you up. You can't go wrong with any of the Chef's Special rolls. I order to-go about 75% of the time because the restaurant itself is pretty small and there's usually a wait. My favorite rolls are the red mountain, pink dragon, and the superman burrito! The ahi tuna tower is pretty on point too. And if you want to substitute tuna with salmon - they're cool with that too! Every time I try a new sushi restaurant I have to go back to Densetsu because I'm so unsatisfied with the other places. read more

For a small restaurant, this place packs in the crowd and delicious, fresh food. A friend and I shared several rolls and were pleasantly surprised with all of our picks! These were some of the yummiest (and largest!) rolls I have had around the area. The inside is small; plenty of low dining tables, sushi bar seating and patio seating. There is also a carryout counter towards the back. I think if I return for dinner I will look into a reservation... I suspect it gets more crazy for dinner. The menu is pretty extensive offering hot entrees, tons of roll options, all the basics and more. If you get overwhelmed with large menus, I would suggest looking at the menu online ahead of time. We started out with Miso soup (was good, just as you would expect), hamachi sushi (fresh, fresh, and more fresh!) and shared the following rolls: Spicy Tuna - outrageously delicious. The tuna was super fresh, not mushy and was also largest spicy tuna roll I have ever had. I am used to small, tight rolls - no this one. The size was that of a typical specialty roll. This roll alone would make me return - one of the best spicy tuna's I think have ever had. Heart-attack (sans cream cheese) - this was not a roll at all.. was half-ed jalapenos stuffed with "assorted fish", but tasted like crab mix and then fried. It was just okay, not what I was expecting so it wasn't really for me. Lacked flavor too. Candy Cane - rolled in a sweet mayo sauce, the taste was surprising yet kind of addicting. The yellowtail included was super fresh and the perfect amount. Again, really big rolls. Heavenly - if you like cucumbers this one is for you - sans rice, rolled in a couple layers of cukes. Really light and fresh tasting made this one different and good. The trend of this place is fresh fish, creative rolls and more fresh fish. When we asked for a manager they told me one wasn't available. After we sat down, we were already being rushed out. I came an hour out of my way to meet up with my friend whom I haven't seen in forever. We finally looked at the menu, and after we ordered, the the waiter took our menu and said it was last call (giving us 15 minutes to even eat) when we spoke to an "manager" aka "the closest thing" I almost laughed out loud. How do you not have a manager present. Especially when it's that busy, needless to say, "the pretend manager" paid for our drinks. Let me start off saying that I love this place and would eat there every day if I could. Densetsu is amazing because it isn't your typical sushi joint. They do have traditional rolls you will see every where you go but they have certain rolls you won't find anywhere else. GIGANTIC rolls you won't find anywhere, which will have you leaving full not like other sushi places. I usually can eat like 4 rolls by myself and not feel full but here I can barely eat two rolls by myself, that is how gigantic they are. The staff makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in to the door. The place has been getting popular sushi place, so you will have to wait to sit. The only down side is that it is a small place meaning you will wait right next to someone sitting down and eating or outside. read more

So I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been here 3-4 times in the past 2 months and put off writing a review especially since it meets all my criteria for my ideal restaurant- 1. Consistent friendly service- I hate those places where you have to "ask for Bob" in order to have a great experience. When I go eat, I shouldnt be on a quest for great service AND good food. We are recent transplants from Austin and love Midori sushi restaurant there. We were sad to leave it as they have the best sushi. Then we moved to Allen and learn that Densetsu is the sister restaurant to Midori's! How great is that, to find out we can still get our favorites?! You have to try the Tuna Tower, The Salmon Tower and the Superman Burrito to try first and then get sushi rolls from there ... They are all so delicious! My family took me here for Father's Day and we experienced extremely terrible service. My wife's salad came out and we still had no napkins or utensils. She asked and they brought only her a set. We had to ask for our own chopsticks and napkins when our food came out(more on that below). My sons food came out and he completely finished his meal before they realized that they lost our appetizer ticket. This series of events caused us to sit for an hour with no sushi at our table. Not to mention that we each had a glass that was empty for over 20 minutes which we had to ask to be refilled. At this point we asked to speak to the manager and we were told that she doesn't speak English. Finally we had to get our food to go as over an hour sitting in a high chair was too much for our 21 month old. As I waited to pay the check and my family was in the car I couldn't help but notice all the employees sitting at tables while there were several uncleared tables and spots at the sushi bar, I will not be back and I will strongly encourage my friends to do the same. read more
