Finally got to try this Yujo location out. First off, great experience overall. My girlfriend surprised me with their omakase experience and everything was amazing. Service was great and overall atmosphere was nice. We went on a weekday so not sure if it just isn't as busy but it seemed super quiet. Either people don't know about this place or it's not as busy on the weekdays. It is sort of hidden but people need to start coming. We were told the omakase we did was only on weekdays but it makes sense for the price! The only nitpicky thing that brings the rating down for me is the interaction between us and the chefs. We were the only ones at the bar and I think after going to the other 2 locations, it was a little underwhelming. Chefs were nice but they seemed a little down or just not as interested in making our experience "amazing". Maybe it was an off day for the location or just the chefs in general but I went for my birthday and I sort of expected a little more from them. Like I said though, everything else was great. Service was still exceptional. For my complimentary dessert, we were given 3 options but since we couldn't pick, the server told us they could give us a little bit of all 3 which was super nice and accommodating. You're not going to find the long-established edomae style sushi at Yujo or are you going to get the more exotic fish (kohada, iwashi, sawara, etc), but what you will get is a good omakase experience. Yujo enhances their nigiri pieces by putting tasty sauces on top and some of them are pretty creative: salted egg yolk, fish sauce, etc.. Their rice isn't bad either... not as "vinegary" as some other places. I went on a Thursday night to take advantage of their 20 courses - $100/person omakase "deal". If you sit at the bar, the chefs are friendly and will engage with you. If you want a really over the top piece, order the "Big Mac". It literally has like 6 things in it. read more

SOUND ON while watching the videos I posted bc that was literally what it was giving. Lots of "Ouuuu," "Ahhhh," and "YUMMM" all night lol. I was genuinely blown away. This was my first premium sushi experience, so yes... I was impressed and yes I'm a little dramatic My date and I chose the Omakase Umi (16 courses). Our greedy butts ordered an extra appetizer "just in case" we were still hungry... big mistake. I definitely had to unbutton my pants when I got to the car We started with an assorted sashimi selection featuring dry-aged fish, premium nigiri, a handroll, and dessert. (See pics below.) Our chef asked about spice level and wasabi tolerance and sir immediately said YES bring the wasabi, I am not a punk. Side note, I had a little allergy congestion and lowkey needed that kick anyway. I can't remember every single dish name, but honestly the whole experience spoke for itself. Our chef was super chill, explained each course thoroughly, and made the experience feel personal. & listen... don't be scared of the "different" ingredients. Try the little plant/berry garnishes too because now I'm obsessed with yuzu and mayberries (IYKYK). If you're open to trying new things and don't have strict allergy restrictions, GO. Sit at the bar, talk to the chefs, and enjoy the creativity right in front of you. Service was great, ambiance was relaxed, and it wasn't overly crowded which made it even better. We had the omakase $100 special that's available on tues-thurs that includes 20 dishes. Because of the price I didn't expect that much, especially because I've been to the salmon nigiri special nights at the other Yujo location. This Yujo location proved me wrong! All the pieces were high quality: They didn't skimp out on any of the fish, caviar, and uni. Every piece was unique and flavorful, and even the ube coconut ice cream dessert was fantastic. The presentation of every dish was also very pretty, and we also enjoyed talking to the sushi chefs throughout the entire night. It has a nice modern vibe to it and I think it can suit any occasion. My daughter and son-in-law have been telling me for years about a place they go for sushi that's simply amazing, and what a treat it was to finally visit. I had expected something similar to my favorite sushi spots, but maybe with a few outstanding special rolls. Yujo Umi was so much more. My son and son-in-law ordered the traditional omakase. My daughter chose a waygu roll and a couple hand rolls. I elected to try the 16-course omakase special ($100 with the tip included in the price) and added an oyster and waygu nigiri. I had no idea how good sushi could be. I could be mad at myself for not taking more pictures, but the bliss I experienced with every course left me somewhat entranced. The waitstaff explained each course, and next time I'll know to jot them down. Everything was so fresh and buttery. For the dessert, I chose an yuzu ice cream adorned with frosted corn flakes. It was the perfect ending to a meal I didn't want to end. They have apparently remodeled the place, and it has a nice ambiance. The staff was attentive without hovering, and so friendly. My hairstylist said great things about this place, so I had to try it out. They have a discount on Thursdays, but I could only go on the weekend. Formerly Kyodai, this restaurant is known for their omakase. We went on a Saturday night. Omakase was $110 per person with a set menu. We were seated right away with no wait time. There was the option to sit at the bar or table. Restroom was clean. The service was excellent and very attentive. Our waters were constantly refilled. Once we were done with one dish, we were immediately given the next item. The waitresses were very knowledgeable in presenting and explaining the ingredients of each dish given that it was during their soft opening. They were also very friendly with a smile on their faces. The presentation of each dish was nice. Having my fair share of omakase, I would say the food tasted average. There wasn't anything that stood out. Some of my favorites were the fatty salmon with uni and silky smooth egg custard. Overall, it was great place for date night. Great food, poor service. I ate here on my birthday and they do not do anything special for birthdays. They did not even wish me a happy birthday despite me adding it was my birthday on the reservation. Someone sitting next to me wanted to buy me oysters and a birthday shot but I was told my time slot for my reservation was over and I was asked to leave. I will not be coming here again. My girlfriend made reservations to try the $100 omakase special. It was 20 courses I believe. I didn't realize this place used to be Kyodai Handroll Bar. Definitely changed the interior design, and it's quite beautiful. A different vibe for sure. The $100 omakase had a nice selection of nigiri, cold plates, and a Handroll. I also ordered extra off the regular menu to try. Service here was good, our waitress was nice. I enjoyed all the nigiri pieces very much, this place has a great quality in fish. Some prices for the specialty rolls and fish were a tad higher than other omakase places. Presentation was beautiful, however some of the flavor combos on the cold tastings were just ok. Nothing was truly memorable, except the Hirame Kosho, that was probably the best tasting dish. Some of the others were lacking the flavors. I never got the opportunity to try the Salmon Wednesdays when Yujo was previously known as Kyodai Handroll Bar. You can bet that I was very ecstatic to find out that they are bringing back their salmon Wednesdays (only at the Frisco location so far). They've increased their prices a tiny bit but that's not surprising with inflation nowadays. I booked a reservation at 5 pm but honestly a reservation is not needed at this time because this is when they first open and it wasn't completely packed at all. It may start becoming packed as word gets around that salmon Wednesday is back so it may still be safe to reserve ahead of time. I love the vibe of the restaurant. There are such nice paintings and decorations along the walls, the lighting creates an intimate environment as well. They limit 15 pieces of nigiri per person, there's also an omakase option available. For my first plate, I got 5 pieces of fatty salmon, 5 aburi (seared) salmon, and 1 king salmon. My friend and I fell in love at first bite with the fatty salmon. The salmon was rich and I honestly didn't even need to dip it in soy sauce to enjoy it. I thought the fatty salmon was good, but honestly I thought the aburi salmon was even better. It is also partially fatty but even better because it has some smoke from the torch they use to wear it and some spicy mayo and light soy sauce on top. The sauces were not overpowering at all, and enhanced the taste of the salmon. The king salmon was very good as well, very rich salmon flavor, but honestly I still enjoyed the aburi salmon more. My second plate had 3 aburi salmon and 1 fatty king salmon. The fatty king salmon seemed like it was slightly seared but omg.... That was the most melt in your mouth bite I had of salmon ever. The salmon basically dissipated in my mouth and was sooo soo good. Definitely give it a try. I am very happy that salmon Wednesdays are back and I hope they eventually roll it out to all of their locations. I recommend the aburi salmon and fatty king salmon. read more

Fantastic experience! Tried their omekase and it was delicious. Each course was fantastic with excellent presentation. Absolutely delicious and quite filling. You can taste the quality of their sea food and wagyu. Each bite was an exquisite experience all on its own with blasts of flavors, textures, and phenomenal mouth feel. We also had a few of their cocktails that were also very delicious! Almost experienced a kami no glass with their "up all night" cocktail. The presentation and flavor of the "dawn at kawaguchi" was also outstanding. Service was top notch and highly attentive to our needs. Overall a great experience and I would not have changed a thing. Previously, Kyodai Frisco was my hubby's and my favorite spot and we always went there for special occasions. It has now changed ownership and is Yūjō Umi and I'm glad to say it is still just as good. We tried Kinzo a few weeks ago and even though it was VERY GOOD, we think Yujo reigns supreme. We went to Yujo tonight for the Thursday Omakase for $88 (what a deal!) and everything was chefs kiss ‍ -Old fashioned: 10/10...hubs said it was smooth and light - Can't remember the name of my cocktail but it had pineapple, whiskey, and egg white and it was DELISH 10/10 - Oysters with plum foam and ikura: 8.5/10....a tad sweet for me. Tastes like melted ice cream on an oyster...but somehow it works? - Toro tartar: 9/10 - 5-10 day dry-aged salmon: 10/10...perfection. The salmon was rich and buttery and the broth has a beautiful truffle flavor. - Tai (red snapper): 7.5/10 good but not my fave fish - Super salmon (salmon + Uni): 10000/10. Call me basic, but I'm a sucker for salmon. It's just melt-in-your mouth sea butter deliciousness. One of my faves of the night - Alamutsu (rosy seabass): 11/10 first time having this and wow was it good. Fatty and delish. - Hirame (flounder) 6.5/10...I don't love flounder. It's a bit sweet with a strong taste of the sea. If you're into that, you'll love it. - Gindara (black cod): 10/10 buttery with a nice char. First time having black cod nigir and I loved it. - Chawamushi (silky smooth egg custard) 9.5/10...only thing that would have made it better was if it had Uni on top - Kinmedai (golden eye snapper): 9/10 Love this mild fatty fish - Otoro: 100/10 such a treat! Melt in your mouth goodness. - Mackerel: 6/10...but to be fair, I'm not a huge fan of mackerel anyway. Hubs liked it. - King salmon: 9/10 was prepared with a nice smoky flavor - Hotate (scallop) and foie gras 10000/10 TO DIE FOR . The star of the show. - Yellowtail hand roll: 7.5/10 good but nothing special -Coffee ice cream with corn flakes: 8/10 corn flakes gave it a great texture - Tiramisu Mille cake: 7/10 I will say, my one critique is the new layout, half as much sushi bar seating as before, which doesn't make sense considering the new focus is all around omakase which most people prefer to sit at the sushi bar for that. My husband and I actually went in with low expectations after reading some of the 1-star reviews, but we came out blown away. Just like the other Yujo locations this place allows you to try an omakase for a bargain! When we went and the sign outside still said Kyodai so it was confusing if we were at the right spot or not. They haven't updated it yet, but indeed we were. On Thursdays they have 20% off the normal price. It's $110 (otherwise) for 16 courses. Plus there was $2 off drinks too. I don't know if it was happy hour or part of the Thursday deal. We sat at the bar instead of our down table. There was gold sparkles and the air around the area glittered which I found confusing at first. We like sitting at the bar because it allows for your dining experience to be a little more exclusive - only because we get to chat with the chefs and we were provided with a more little more love. What I mean by that is one of the dish comes with gold glitter that's spritz on! If you sit at the table they just add gold flakes. I hope that didn't ruin the surprise for anyone but it was a nice touch! The staff is very friendly and nice just like the other locations. I will say it was slower than the other places I think because this just opened and not a lot of people know about it. So now is the time to go! It's not hectic! I recently tried the new and updated Yujo, formerly Kyodai. The recipes are not the same. The hand rolls are not the same. I did not enjoy the new hand roll recipes. Not to mention that the hand rolls aren't made well enough to be placed in those freshness wrapper. The idea is to keep the nori crisp, but instead you get a mess. The nori also just does not taste as crispy as it used to. If you want that crispy nori without the hassle and all the flavor, there is a new hand roll joint in McKinney called Heian. This will curb your Kyodai hand roll fix. The new focus is on Omakase, having tried many Omakase's in Austin (Uchi, Uchiko, Tonari, etc.) the quality is sub par. You would be better off heading to downtown for an Omakase. It's not terrible, just doesn't standout. Like there wasn't any course where I was like "omg this is the only place where I have experienced this flavor!". It will crave any Omakase hankering, but it's just not a place I would genuinely go for Omakase. Service is always good. Same as before. The ambiance is alright. Love the addition of extra tables and chairs. The decor previously was better in my opinion, but the new look is cute too. read more

I came here on a Tuesday night and was lucky to be one of the first customers to try their newly launched UMI Set. It was a fun and unique experience as you can make your own sushi! The set starts with a bowl of miso soup, followed by an appetizer. Then they brought out a set with 9 different fishes, a bowl of sushi rice, 9 different types salt/seasonings, soy sauce, some seaweed, and an instruction paper. The fish was so fresh and tasty; my favorite was the otoro, king salmon, foie gras, and kanpachi. My waitress was very attentive and thorough when explaining the set. Truly wanted to enjoy it here... been bookmarking this place for so long after seeing all the photos :( The Nigiri flight was 7/10 but felt their hand roll set of 4 was 6/10... very skimpy with very bland flavors. Was not a fan of the rice used. We were about to order signature dishes but stopped here because we didn't enjoy the above. The experience of the food itself was disappointing but that itself wasn't a low Yelp rating worthy experience.. I don't like giving businesses less than 5 stars if possible -- I'd rather not comment. But, this food experience + seeing that they require 20-35% preset tip on their mobile CC machine felt way too much. The ambience and service was more 18%, 20% if generous.. Additionally, when we walked in, the place was 30% full with plenty of chairs and seats everywhere. But we were initially motioned to a very uncomfortable small high chair table. I felt that given it was prime dinner time but the restaurant was still empty, we could've just been nicely seated to a slightly comfortable area. read more

It is with serious regret that I must give Yujo Umi one star. First and foremost I want to be clear the service from the staff is always 5 star and was 5 star. I'm a big fan of the team and am familar with them from when they worked under Kyodai. The new concept unfortunately was very underwhelming. Both my wife and I ordered the Omakase. Each piece nigiri we had did not live up to the nigiri we used to have at Kyodai. The majority of pieces my wife and I had were simply unimpresive. Under the Kyodai concept and brand the nigiri was always delicately treated. Each piece seemed meticulous and thoughtful. Each garnish or light touch of sauce was well thought out. Unfortunately these fell flat. We even mentioned it to the server on multiple occasions. I could tell she seemed helpless because the menu and concept were what they were. The dishes in the omakase did not wow or leave us craving more. It used to be great to have a great hand roll place which provided outstanding nigiri. When the name changed I was still hopeful. I had eaten at Yujo on multiple occasions off Preston Road. So please know this is not just me wishing the concept didn't change. I've enjoyed Yujo on multiple occasions. But something seemed off and very different than my previous experiences. There's lots of work to be done at Yujo Umi. It's a big miss right now. They even still have same old signs... the sushi has also degraded in quality and the chefs are amateur ... the service is 1/5. Missing the mark time and time again.
