We had a bit of an emergency this weekend with a surprise bout of unrelenting kennel cough, and Dr. Layh managed to squeeze us in with very short notice. Anyone who complains about Dr Lahy or his staff has not tried to use Argyle Animal Hospital. I moved our 3 dogs to Denton Animal Hospital after Argyle stood me up on 2 appointments. They put me and my 3 dogs in an exam room for over an hour one time and 45 minutes another AFTER I made confirmed appointments. Ever had to stay in a little room with 3 very active dogs? Also Denton;s prices are about half of what we were paying Argyle for similar services.. read more

My family has been going to this vet since before I could even walk! Our 6 dogs and I practically grew up going here, and we have never had anything short of a wonderful experience. They care very much for your animals, and have a genuine love that precludes them from overcharging you for service- something that is rare among veterinarians today. Not sure what kind of people work at this place, but we watched them put a dog outside in this freezing cold weather, and left it outside and closed the door leaving the poor thing all by itself. And not to mention this is on University Drive, a crazy busy road! What kind of veterinarian leaves an animal outside unattended? If I could give a zero star would. I had a very not great time with with old doctor that barely checked my dog out. He told me that my dog needed surgery and all this other stuff that wasn't relevant to what I was asking about. i had to ask him to check her lymph nodes. He pushed my dogs hernia inside her body to show me she has a hernia but it just hurt her. I hope he's not doing this to any other dogs because my dog was traumatized from the experience. he acted like we knew nothing about dog and that we didn't care about her health or didn't have the money to treat her. read more

I'M DISGUSTED! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE! I have worked in emergency and specialty veterinary medicine for over 20 years as a nurse. I have trained veterinarians straight out of vet school, I have 10 years experience in cardiology, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, surgery. You name it, I've seen it. However, I live in a on the West Coast, not in Texas. So, since I can't yell at the doctor in person, I want to forewarn people NOT to use this clinic. My college age daughter took in her three-month-old kitten, who she recently adopted from the Denton animal shelter, because she was quickly becoming fragile, not eating, lethargic, no eye discharge, no sneezing... She looked on yelp, saw that this hospital had good reviews and decided to take her kitten there. Then she came home and told me that, not only did they not get a body weight, but they didn't take a temperature. Let that sink in... THEY DID NOT TAKE A TEMPERATURE ON A LETHARGIC, SICK KITTEN! This is standard protocol for even a healthy animal. At the appointment, the doctor gives a steroid injection (WTF?! Why?), sends the kitten home with amoxicillin, no printed invoice showing what was done, no recommendations as to what to look for and went to recheck, not what was paid for, and what medications were sent home. Just a carbon copy hand written receipt! Mind blown. A week later, the kitten is the same, still eating with occasional diarrhea. Trying to focus on the easiest solutions, I suggest she test for parasites. I told my daughter to call and see if she can drop off a fecal sample to test. The receptionist doesn't sound like she knows what she's talking about and just said "sure". My daughters boyfriend goes in with the fecal sample and speaks to the doctor. First of all, my dog just had a fecal exam in a large city and it cost me $60. The Dr. quoted $90 for a fecal sample to be sent to the lab! He offered to do an in-house fecal for $13, but it doesn't test for everything. He also suggested that they do the next vaccination on the kitten. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! You want to vaccinate a sick kitten!? Then he proceeds to tell my daughters boyfriend to stop googling things and asking questions and to trust his 33 years of experience. I'm actually texting with my daughters boyfriend in the appointment and told him to tell this narcissistic, insecure doctor that I've worked in emergency and specialty veterinary medicine for over 20 years. I have more experience under my belt than he does. He quickly walked away and stopped answering questions. Do not trust your animals in this hospital. It sounds very old-school, with a very insecure Doctor that doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Pay the extra money and go to someone that is well-trained, well experienced, and truly cares that your pet gets better. read more

THIS IS THE WORST VET IN DENTON. They didn't seem to have time to actually look at my cat. THEY DID NOT LOOK AT MY CAT AT ALL. THEY ALSO GAVE US A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MEDICATION THAN THE ONE DISCUSSED AND REFUSED TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION LATER. They told us that they were prescribing cat steroids and gave us instructions about administering steroids. When we got home, they had given us dog antibiotics. When I called to ask whether my cat should have steroids or antibiotics, they refused to listen to me saying they had other patients and that dog antibiotics are totally safe for cats. That might be true, but I was given instructions for steroids and would like to actually treat my cat, not just give them a random medicine that won't kill them. ALSO, NO ONE WEARS MASKS IN HERE OR KNOWS HOW TO NOT BE PATRONIZING TO ANYONE WHO ISN'T A WHITE MAN. read more

We've been taking all our pets here, both cats and dogs, for over twenty years and are very grateful for their care. Best veterinarian we've ever had. I trust Dr. Layh because he's a straightforward practitioner who does a great job and does not try to sell you a bunch of unnecessary and expensive tests and treatments. He's caring and patient with both the animals and their owners, and will explain anything you need to know about the medical issue and appropriate treatments. If you think your must prove your love for your pet by giving your vet a money transfusion, there are plenty of wildly overpriced vets in this town who can help you. I just want my dog and cat healthy and happy, and Dr. Layh is always ready and willing to help. read more

I've used this business for years and Dr. Layh is as others have said, "old school" which is not a bad thing in todays money hungry business culture. He is no non-sense and doesn't usually try to gouge you or sell unnecessary services. The biggest reason for the one-star rating is his staff, techs and those who answer the phone are unfriendly and have an attitude which conveys a lack of regard for your concerns or questions. They are not helpful and borderline rude in their customer service skills and sensitivity to the needs of the customer. These guys are the ones who will be performing most of the work and with the kind of attitude I have been dealing with, I don't feel comfortable having them do anything for me. It's too bad Dr. Layh cannot find staff who shares a compassionate desire to help customers and their pets instead of simply collecting a paycheck. read more

Ok... here's what happened! We are in the middle of a two month journey traveling the country to know and remember how great America truly is and see sights we've never seen before. (With our two Rat Terriers and a kitten in our 19 foot travel trailer). We stayed in an RV park with a wasp nest next to it. The maintenance guy took care of it but there were still some buzzing around. Last night we noticed Coco was more sensitive than usual, didn't want to be touched, etc. This morning I noticed her cheek was swollen. What to do?!?! We were just leaving Fort Worth! Decided to drive on north of the big city to find a vet. Found Denton Animal Hospital on Yelp after being told by several others that they could see her hours later or not at all or to "drop her off and leave a deposit for her care!" . Oh please!!! This was one of our babies! Dr Layh was WONDERFUL! He gave her a ten day antibiotic injection with anti inflammatory and Keflex to go. The logical diagnosis and his compassion really touched me. He was also real cognizant of the fact that we were on the Road! His technician ( I'm sorry I don't remember his name) was also wonderful. I'm grateful for the care and if you can, go to Denton Animal Hospital! He would be our regular vet if we lived in the Denton area!! read more

They told me today that he could go home - he has yet to be able to urinate and has been home several hours already. Their 24 hour "emergency line" is a joke. It's been ringing for over a half hour with no answer. Incredibly frustrated that they would release my cat to me without having the problem fixed. If I had known they'd be unreachable, I'd never have trusted them to care for him. read more

He's an old school vet, that doesn't try to get you to buy services you didn't ask for. He's honest and nice and his staff was really sweet and helpful. We have two decently behaved cats that we bring to Dr. Layh, and the staff here has always been kind and friendly to us. They are always accommodating when I'm needing to pick up some flea meds and they are about to close, and have always been more than happy to clip their nails since I have trouble doing it myself. The place could probably be updated, but I would rather that they keep their prices low. My only complaint is that Dr. Layh seemed uncomfortable handling the cats when he was unsure if they would bite. read more

One person answered and i asked how much it is to vaccinate my 2 month old puppy and he told me $34 then when I asked what vaccinations it comes with he put me on hold for 10 minutes then another guy comes on the phone and I asked him how much it is and he told me $22 and i once again asked what all comes with it and his response was "I could tell you 6 different viruses and you aren't gonna understand anything I'm saying you just have to trust us" Then continued telling me how busy they are and that I should call around and ask other places or call back later to set up an appointment. I told him I go to school full time and have a job I don't have time to keep calling back to get disrespected. I had no issues and the price is very affordable. Yes it is an older building but maybe his prices are reasonable because of this. I have no problem with that he does knows his stuff, my dog looks and feels 95% better that what she went in for. I read some of there reviews and think everyone must expect the doctor to stay and chat be all friendly. Maybe his personality is not a talker but I am not either. Maybe that's why he isn't a Car salesman. I have been to doctors for myself or kids and doctor walks in and walks out or the only person I see mostly is the nurse. I took my dog to this man to try to get help for fleas and he has been nothing but rude the whole time. I paid my bills I bought $70 worth of medicine from him and ask him for my prescription for my dog and he Refuses to write it claiming the pharmacy I want to use does me know good but I can get my pets prescription for $45 instead of $70 I'm not sure how that's Not doing me any good. He was extremely rude to me on the phone and gave me a lecture about paying taxes and being a good citizen I'm not really sure what he was talking about. How is this nutjob still able to practice? After almost killing my dog who was hit by a car by neglecting him the surgery he needed (my dog sat in a filthy cage in that disgusting, outdated clinic for 2 weeks on 25 mg of tramadol with a crushed pelvis, broken femur and cracked ribs). I picked him up and took him to another vet where he had surgery the next day. Another surgery followed 6 days later. I was told this vet sees a lot of the incompetent Dr Layh's animals and I was also told I needed to file a complaint with the board of veternarians. I should have followed through. Not sure what McDonald's University of vet schools he graduated from, but if you care one ounce for your animal, you will not take them to this narcissitic nut! It's so disappointing you can't give 0 stars. I work in customer service so I consider myself a pretty patient person but I swear I almost lost it today with the place. My 1 year old Australian Shepherd was throwing up blood for 20 minutes straight before we could finally get her into the car and here (also went to another ER before this and they sent us here because for some reason they didn't have a doctor in so they couldn't help us). She ate the sharp plastic and all of her heart worm medication the day prior. Poison control warned us to take her in if this happened as it might rip her stomach. So we walk in and the older lady at the front desk doesn't even so much as acknowledge me for at least 3 minutes. Then she finally looks up and looks me dead in the eye and proceeds to answer the phone instead of helping the people in front of her first. Then when she finally gets done I tell her my dog has been throwing up blood for the last 20 or so minutes and she has the AUDACITY to ask me if WE HAVE AN APPOINTMENT?! I said no OBVIOUSLY and she says "it's going to be a while" so I tell her "It's an emergency" and she said "well we'll have to get a room ready" then as I'm filling out paperwork I watch another dog "with an appointment" go in next and she asks me the almost insulting question "did she eat something"... OF COURSE SHE DID. So I slammed the clip board back on the table and took my time that I would've sat waiting at a vet with HORRIBLE SERVICE and took her to the one on Teasley who has always treated us with respect and compassion and urgency. This place was he most insulting joke of a pet hospital I have ever been to. I'm horrified they let their front desk lady work there and treat people like that. DO BETTER. read more

This is an old school doc. He's very compassionate and understanding. Prices really reasonable. Staff very accommadating and sympathetic. My homeless dog rescues were taken excellent care of and when I needed to put my dog down, after 16 years, he was wonderful in understanding my grief and reluctance. This is a great place to go if you just want good common sense treatment and not a lot of designer (expensive) tests done to keep you animal healthy.
