This visit to the Denver Firefighters Museum is for one of my childhood friends, who blogs about firetrucks on Instagram and works as a 911 dispatcher in Tennessee. We had lots of time to kill before going to the convention center later in the day, so I suggested this museum to my parents when I found it during a random maps search around the city. And to all you parents out there, this museum could save your child's life in the event of a fire. Admission to get in was $9. Getting around the museum is kinda like being in IKEA, where they have footprints on the floor telling you where to go in order. This museum, which is in the shape of an actual fire station and has two floors, shows you the entire history of how and where the 911 dispatch system was first invented, types of firetrucks used over the years, how to dial 911 in case of a fire, where firefighters stay while on the job, and so forth. In the back on the first floor is an educational video of what to do if there's a fire. Upstairs there was so much more, we were shown firefighters' patches from almost every state, which stopped at Pennsylvania for some reason. I guess they're still collecting patches from Rhode Island all the way to Wyoming. I took pics of patches from Kentucky and Massachusetts (where my childhood friend used to live), Maine (where my dad is from), Nevada (where we live), and New Hampshire (where I was born and where my mom is from). It was very interesting seeing all the patches from each county and city in my state of residence. Replicas of dormitories where firefighters stay in while on the job were also shown, which I found very interesting. I took so many pics here but Yelp will only let me add 20 at a time. Don't forget to sign the guestbook upstairs and the survey downstairs before you leave! This was a very educational visit and we're very happy that we got a tour of this museum. This was a great place for us to take our little ones. They had a lot of cool things for them to look at and interact with and they had Firefighters reading the kids books in the play area which I thought was super sweet. It's a bit smaller than a traditional museum because they converted an old Firehouse which is a unique idea. Overall I really thought the museum was well down and helps teach kids (and adults) about the history of firefighters in the Denver area. read more

Went here for the first time with the family during the July 4th weekend on a library adventure pass. Very cool little museum. My son learned some great things about fire safety during the visit. He loved getting to practice 911 calls to the emergency dispatcher on the practice phone. Of course the fire trucks were a hit. They have a designated one that kids can sit and play in. The upstairs area also has a play area for kids. They also cover a lot of history of fire fighting in Denver, which was enjoyable for my husband and I to learn about. They have several fire poles upstairs that go down to the bottom floor. We enjoyed our time here very much. I would say you can spend 1-2 hours here if you take your time. We parked in a lot across from the Denver Mint which was much cheaper ($5) than the lots nearby which ran between $15-25. It's hard to find street parking so plan ahead and look up possible lots. Staff was friendly and gave us a brief overview of the museum when we arrived. They have a small gift shop in the front as well. read more

Pretty cool museum where tou can walk around on your own without a tour guide and just read and enjoy what they have. However, TONS of text is packed into each area, so it would be nice to have more hands on things to enjoy, or even more technology like videos to educate the customers. You can see the Denver Firefighters back when the department just began to now, and it's super cool to see the progression in transportation, tools, and technology. There is a small entrance fee to get into here, but its nothing ridiculous. They don't have much to do other than look around, but they do have a firetruck that kids can play in and they can even dress up like fireman. They also have a gift shop type area where they sell little toys and many cool shirts. I'd definitely come and check it out cuz it's in the first fire station, but I think they could make it more memorable with less text everywhere. Overall, a great time, and pretty short if you're looking for something to do in a time crunch. read more

I wanted to go here for a while and so glad I checked this off my must see and do in Denver list. Admission is $9 per person. If you're military or firefighter it's $8. There are also restrooms to use here. Overall, it's a very informative experience to visit the museum. It's a self-guided tour as well. It will take about an hour or more to get thru the museum. If you really take your time and read every bit of information at each exhibit, it could take 2 or more hours. There are also two floors to the museum. They did a really good job with the layout and exhibits. The building is an old Denver Fire Station. There are also numerous things to purchase at the gift shop. They also have a small section of books for sale as well. I was a bit surprised to see a local book about ghosts and hauntings in Colorado there. I highly recommend this museum especially if you have firefighters in your family or have friends that served. You will walk away with an even better appreciation of firefighters. read more

Fun, interesting and educational museum. In front is a cool gift shop with inexpensive to pricier stuff from stickers, books, tee's and toys. I loved the section where kids can don the gear and pretend to be firefighters. There's a wonderful section to teach home safety with a model home, every school should make a field trip here, and homeschoolers too. The building itself has beautiful wood doors, floors and lockers. I was in and out in an hour and one can take less time or spend 2 hours here. read more

I got two kiddos and I'm at home with them currently just figuring things out like any Mom. With that said I'm all about taking them to museums they can enjoy. Luckily this was a great stumble. My daughter is 3 and thinks fire trucks are so cool! So I reserved a pass here for free through Jeff co library system. With that said we came and enjoyed a few parts of the museum. I didn't get to read snd experience the whole thing with toe LO but we got to pretend drive s fire truck and then go upstairs to the kiddos play room. So fun!!! My daughter still asks to this day if we can go again. It really is a great find for kids under 5 or super educational for older kids. They do a great job balancing it out for young to old. I do hope to go again and actually have time to read everything regarding our history. read more

This is a great kid-friendly family spot! Although I don't have kids I decided to check this place out one day because it was free (check out my tip below on the free day). The facility which houses the museum isn't big itself- you can get through the place in less than an hour if you are kid-less. However all the old firefighter equipment was great and they had some pretty interesting artifacts and fun reads for adults. They have plenty of learning activities for the kids and its clearly marked with a cartoon dog for what they can and cannot touch. They teach kids about the firefighter outfits, trucks, making an escape route, and how to stop drop and roll! I even saw a birthday party going on upstairs for the kids! Great idea for the child that can't get enough of firefighters and fire trucks! One thing that stuck with me is that they had a lot of tributes to 9-11 in the upstairs floor. Even a piece of beam from one of the towers. TIP: We were able to get in for free from passes that we got from the Smithsonian museum. What an awesome treasure! We went for their monthly FREE day and was able to partake in a fire truck ride around downtown Denver, a scavenger hunt within the museum, and also freebies like a free firemans hat and free baby food from Beechnut! All the volunteers were very friendly and kind. The exhibits are small but pack alot into them. I am definitely more grateful and in awe of what our firefighters do for us! Tons of kid friendly portions - they are all marked with a Dalmation in a firemans hat named Blaze! Parking is street metered parking. Or there are plenty of $8 spots in the lot across the street. Was sad to hear they will be getting rid of the white 50's firetruck we rode today, but they said they are on the hunt for a replacement. Also, love their little gift shop area, the mini firetruck toy with light and siren is a must buy for your LO. read more

This was a fun visit for a 2 year old. I will say that there was more than I thought there ws going to be for him. It was a good mix of history interesting and educational for adults but things here and there for a kiddo to do. Some of his favorites was the dress up station and pole to slide down. The kids area was alright, it didn't feel clean or organized but was a nice addition. The rest of the museum was interested but I wish there was more we could touch, might have been because of covid. I will say that one visit is enough. There wouldn't be anything new or sections we didn't visit to need a second visit. It was quite small but reasonably priced. I'd say one visit in your lifetime would be absolutely worth it tho! read more

What a fun place! Granted, I was hoping to see some real firefighters, I was quite content to check out all the informative history and see the beginnings of firefighting. From art to historical memorabilia, this museum offers much in a self guided tour.There are also puppet shows, art/craft stations and numerous places to find out as much as you can about the dangers of fire and how to stay safe. This is a great safety update for kids. My favorite safety station was the "stop, drop and roll" area where you can put out (felt) flames by stopping, droping and rolling the flames to a felt mat. The second floor housed most of the art and memorabilia, and the main level is a blast with fire trucks the kids can ride, safety clothing to try on and a pole to slide down. Fun times! read more

This was a decent museum to take the grandson, something different. Nice mix of things he could touch and play with (like the fire truck and firemen gear) with displays that can keep an adult interested. It was obvious upstairs that there are organized children's activities but not on the day we attended. Parking was off site (street or a lot across the street). read more

This place is a hidden gem. There's a ton of fun stuff to do for kids. My 3 year old LOVED the birthday party he went to here. The kids can dress up, play in a real fire engine, do crafts about firemen, play computer games about fire safety, and so much more. Downside: very steep stairs (I actually fell down a couple) and there are a lot of things in the front that can't be touched (which is just a little hard with toddlers). The Denver Firefighters Museum is such a hidden gem. We were exploring places within walking distance of the Convention center to host a reception, and sure enough just two blocks away, sits the Denver Firefighters Museum. A place rich in history, resembling a portal to another time. Once you walk in the doors you start to feel the history within the walls. The event space itself, upstairs holds about 150 and was quite suitable for reception with a bar and food service. We couldn't have been happier with the management at the museum, Thomas was super great to work with and we will be coming back in the future. Again, this is a great space for events, whether a corporate reception or a kid's birthday, I think this venue has so much to offer to people of all ages. read more

Pretty neat museum with a lot to learn. It isn't huge, so plan to spend around 1-2 hours here. I took my four boys here and they really enjoyed playing in the kids fire truck and exploring some of the activities upstairs. It is a little challenging keeping several young boys from touching all the cool stuff here. It is a bit pricey for the size if you pay the standard price, but it is downtown where nothing is cheap to run. read more

We are being tourists in our own state this year. Having grown up in Colorado it is easy to take for granted all the things to do here with an attitude of, "we will get to that." Well the time is now and the latest tourist stop was the Firefighter's Museum. I had actually been on a Haunted Bus Tour and this was a stop on that tour back in October. While we didn't see any ghosts (boo - pun intended), we did have a lovely time. The museum is housed in the original fire station #1which is now a historic building. I love the smell and creak of old buildings which set the stage for a good experience. The museum is interesting for those that like to read as well as those that like to see. You can touch but only where Squiggy the dog is posted up which I would think would make for great fun for the wee littles. You can climb a fire engine, put on fire fighter clothing but you can't slide down a pole. The displays were informational with a lot of information packed into each area. We spent about an hour in the museum and then were off to the next adventure! read more

Help out the local firefighters by donating. This place is awesome for children's! Well I'm certainly a kid at heart so I enjoyed my visit. I actually stopped by with a friend to just look at the gift shop since we were a bit late. Felt like we wouldn't have enough time to look around so I ended up chatting with the lady who run this place. She was extremely sweet and we talked about our adventures and my reason for visiting Denver. In the end, she actually let me and my friend tour around for free since we only had 30 minutes till closing. So nice of her. So we basically rushed around everything. From sliding down the fire pole, getting inside the fire engine, trying on firefighter clothes..Yes..they fit us. We are tiny little asians. Lol. Pretty much ran around the whole place and in the end we left and donated some cash into the box. It was awesome! read more

My son has recently decided that he's obsessed with Fire Trucks. He found one somewhere recently and hasn't let it out of his sight. Through the power of Yelp, I found the Denver Firefighters Museum, and it was closer than I thought it would be! We went around lunch (12-1) and there were only 2 other people in the whole Museum with us. It was nice and quiet, we were able to take our time, look around, and play on the Kids Areas. When we bought our tickets, they explained to my son and I that the signs with Squirt, the Firefighting Dalmatian, were things it was OK for him to touch (being a 2.5 year old with Autism, it was hard to explain that to him) and the places were nicely marked. The upstairs was amazing. They have a 9/11 memorial wall and a piece of the WTC. It made me tear up, and someday, I'll explain to my son about what happened that day, and probably take him there to explain it. ImI liked the fact we were able to explore on our own timeline and we got to see everything in about an hour. My son got a new Fire Truck, a tee shirt and a hat! I think that we will go back when he's a little older, as I think he'll appreciate it more, but we did have a blast!! If you're like me and you didn't even know this place existed, check it out. Admission was reasonable, parking was easy (there are meters and a lot across the street, with $12 parking). You won't be disappointed!! read more

Kids can sit in a fire engine, pretending to drive it. Kids can slide down a fire pole. Kids can have practice fire drills. Kids can get dressed up in miniature firefighting outfits and hats. (It's adorbs.) Kids can color pictures and do puzzles relating to firemen. And you can have a birthday party here for your fireman loving kiddo. Adults can see some really cool firefighter history and artifacts. You can learn quite a bit about firefighting in general and firefighters in Denver specifically. You can also buy the firefighter's calendar if you have been looking for one. It's a pretty cool place. And the cost of entrance goes to a good cause. Definitely worth checking out at least once as an adult and multiple times if you have a kid. read more

A really fun place for kids (they have a big room upstairs for hosting kids' birthday parties, etc, which I thought was so well planned), and not half bad for adults (but you know, it's one of those places that an adult will probably not need to see a second time). A small but nice gift shop, lots of props, unique restrooms (check out the men's upstairs, it's as if you're put back in a period film!). Your family can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring in this museum! read more

Had an awesome time here. Well worth the entrance fee to see how the city's fire department handled fires back in the day and how technology had progressed in fire safety. The upstairs (which I feel a lot of people miss the stairs) was my favorite. Showed the old locker rooms, dorms and family rooms (fire fighters worked 7 days a week with 1 day off in between so the family room was paramount in order to keep the morale up). All in all, it was a great experience. Unlike nearly every museum I've gone to I can honestly say I'd return again! read more

I visited this museum in 5/04, and it was small but quite interesting. It's located in the historic Station Number 1 (built in 1909).

I thought there would be more trucks for my nephews to play on- there was only one. The do have stuff for kids to do- but it's kinda boring- a table of puzzles, a reading corner...the computer games were a big hit. Props to Denver though for recognizing and honoring these brave men and women. It gave me chill bumps to see the piece of metal from the Twin Towers and the touching painting behind it. read more

Cozy place, kids loved it! We attended a bitthday party here, the rental room was huge, and they had a little demonstration om safety. Not much to do, so an hour visit would be a stretch... but very much worth visiting if your kiddos(or you) are interested in fire trucks. read more

My 4-year old son was invited to a birthday party at this venue. While it's a beautiful museum with very interesting and well-cared for artifacts from decades passed, it is really not a place for children. Or at least, they aren't really welcome there. There are a small number of items that can be touched, but most everything is off limits. Children must be silent, not touch anything, and not run (upstairs, where birthday parties are held). The lady in the gift shop clearly doesn't like children at all. And my kid is a good kid who listens and doesn't run or touch things! I don't know why you'd advertise that you welcome children and children's birthday parties if they aren't really welcome and can't touch anything. The "presentation" given was also pretty disappointing and not really age appropriate (at least not for the audience I was a minority in). Telling young children to leave their beloved pets in a house fire is somewhat devastating. Truly, I couldn't wait to leave. Very cool museum, but not for kids. read more

I have to admit, seeing as how I live in Downtown Denver and had never heard of this place before, coupled with the fact they were running an Amazon Local for crazy cheap, I assumed this would be a so-so experience. Boy, was I wrong! This is an AMAZING place to go whether or not you're bringing along a little one or just finding a fun way to spend the day. The museum was much larger than I expected and much more intricate. We brought along my best girlfriend's one and a half year old, and there was so much to keep him busy. Big plus for parents of children that can't-stop-touching-everything age- the museum did a great job at making sure that all of the artifacts are cased in, so you don't have to worry about your kid destroying something valuable! Also, there are pitstops throughout the tour that cater specifically to children, be it coloring your own badge, practicing a stop-drop-and-roll, or our personal favorite, trying on firefighting gear and hopping into a real fire truck! It was amazing to see fire trucks and uniforms from the different eras, as well as how a fire station is set up. Educational and so much fun, this is a fantastic place to be. I was very excited to find that they had a firefighting jacket and hat I could fit into, so I hopped in the truck as well (even though the kids wouldn't give me turn to drive, haha)!
