This kitchen supply store is worth the drive from north texas. It had originally been a hospital. So each room is a different room in the hospital. From cookbooks to dishes, flatware linens gadgets. It's all incredible. The service is over the top amazing. The prices were very good. I didn't feel like I was in a tourist trap that everything was marked up, plan on spending some time looking around. This place is HUGE!!! I literally got lost! When I entered the small storefront I didn't realize the space was so deep and wrapped all the way through a series of hallways, and what seemed like a never ending slew of small rooms with different items in them, into the space next door too! Impressive. And they really do have EVERYTHING cooking and kitchen here...ironically except the sink. If it weren't for my waiting hubby, I could have easily spent hours in Der Kuchen Laden. Despite being on Main Street their prices are comparable to other stores. They offer a lot of very high quality items. When I first came across this place years ago I was overwhelmed due to the many rooms of cooking supplies and the layout and the fact that I wanted everything there! The cooking utensils and other kitchen gadgets are decently priced and the best part: they have sooo many purple items! I'm a baker and they have an extensive baking section which I love and I have yet to leave this store empty handed. This occasion I stocked up on some cooking utensils and a knife but there is still a lot more things that I would love to buy... guess it will have to be on the next trip. One thing I want to try is their coffee. It smells sooo good but I have always been too full when I go there and have no room for it but I hear many people complimenting it. This is the coolest little store ever! They look so tiny on the outside but it is really big inside and never seems to end. You should probably clear a good part of your schedule for this place! We were initially going to go in for 5 minutes but ended up staying for 30 minutes or so instead - no regrets! They have mugs, coffee makers, knives, pots, pans, dishes, bowls, wine glasses, aprons phew* ... so much stuff that I can't even list them all off. The stuff they have is very interesting yet many of the things are things you need but have not even realized until you saw them in this store!! We ended up finding mugs with Renoir paintings on them for the outside design, a really really really nice steak knife, an espresso/coffee maker called the Aeropress (that we were going to buy on Amazon), a really nice scooper for coffee grinds and a little measuring cup. If we had more money and time we would have probably ended up buying a lot more stuff than we did. This place is like the Daiso of Fredericksburg! I would travel to Fredricksburg just for Der Kuchen Laden, the Disneyworld of kitchen stores. Not only do they carry the basics and a lot of nice higher end kitchen items, and they also carry a LOT of small specialty items, including those you didn't know you needed! Here, I can buy the long-handled coffee scoop I cannot find anywhere else. For $3. They have an excellent selection for the items they stock. Did you know sieves came in that many sizes?? They pack SO many different items into a small space! And those who work here are very knowledgable about the items they sell and will help you find exactly what you are looking for. They sell tea and coffee in bulk too, and there's also a coffee shop inside with reasonable prices (especially for Fredricksburg). Ask for samples of the coffee of the day. Don't miss it! read more

They look so "normal" from the outside but the inside is a treasure trove of never ending nooks and crannies that will delight a kitchen enthusiast for hours.. I could have blown SO much money in here if I hadn't been majorly scrimping to afford this trip. They had some really fabulous kitchen stuff. Some stuff you need, some stuff that you didn't know you needed til you saw it existed, and some stuff you probably don't need but want the heck out of anyway. There are many rooms to this store and it just...kept...going! In a good way! I am going back someday when I have some spending money and I am going to splurge. This is a promise to myself. The prices are that which you'd expect in a touristy town. I have been to cooking stores all over the world. This store is among the top five I've ever visited. I gauge most kitchen equipment shops by how many items they have for sale that I've never seen before, never knew I wanted. This one had it all, with one surprising find after another in its maze of rooms. Wow and wow! I returned the next day after ruminating on whether or not I could devote scarce real estate in the gadget drawer of my smallish motorhome to them. Yes, absolutely could. I walked into the Kitchen Shop for the very first time...I loved it! Greeted as I walked in by a friendly guy behind the counter, I knew I had to do some serious shopping...I guess my ego was rubbed the RIGHT way. :) haha I couldn't imagine what I had been doing all the 8 days I spent in Fredericksburg prior to visiting here. With a wine tasting room, nice kitchen gadgets and stuff, why not check it out?? This wine tasting bit would attract the vast majority of visitors, however, I couldn't imagine wasting my time with wine when they had a nook and cranny filled with tea stuff! I'm a tea drinker!!! I found items which are rarely found in regular kitchen departments of better stores, I guess that's just the way it is. The coffee section was neat. The whole store was awesome; but, I didn't get to actually spend 30 minutes per section like I wanted to because my children were rearranging the shelves and my husband was suggested kindly to show the girls the fish in the pond outdoors. lol I WAS watching them, but, I blame one of the ladies who worked there...she struck up a conversation with me about foods and we weren't paying attention. lol So, my husband took the girls outdoors (and it was hot as you know what) and so, I knew I had to shop fast and get out before I had to get ugly with my honey after we left. lol I think my 8 year old ate a gold fish...but, I guess she'll be alright. Anyway, I purchased a couple of cute items, got a quick story about the building being an actual hospital back in the day and the owner's father and grandfather were doctors in this hospital back in the day!(I think that's how the story goes). Such a fun place. I know a lot of people talk about this place costing serious money but honestly their prices are fair. Kitchen stuff in general is just expensive. I'm a chef and I buy a lot of it and I didn't see anything that was priced unfairly. By far it was cheaper than a place like Sur la Table, Crate & Barrel or Williams Sonoma. What I loved is that everything was broken up into rooms and the rooms just kept going and going. If everything was in one room it could get overwhelming but this was you feel like you can look at everything. It does get crowded though so go early. They have wine tasting and a coffee shop in the back. This is a haven for the home cook who is looking for something fun. Lots of fun things for bakers. I would give this place more stars if I ever thought I'd be back. Which is not the store's fault, but still... Whatever you want for the kitchen, chances are they have it here. They have an amazing collection of chef's knives and cutlery. So much so that my boyfriend was practically drooling over them, and now I've got something to save up for when birthday time rolls around. They also have a great selection of cookbooks, including a local PTA type cookbook, which I always think is cool. However, being deep in the heart of Texas, chances are a veg like me would never make anything in the book, but it would make a nice gift for someone who collects. Felt like I walked into the TARDIS when I entered this place. (For those who don't get the Dr Who reference: Way bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside, and tons of rooms) Selection is awesome, staff is friendly, store is pretty cool. Biggest reason for not 5 stars... the prices. I know they're not a huge chain and they're more of a 'higher end' store... but a lot of the stuff they carry there I've seen elsewhere for about half the price. We bought a few things there and later found the same exact items at places like Walmart for way cheaper. I'm all for supporting local stores... but damn. Massive location. It looks small, but it is a maze wonderland of kitchen necessities (and not-so-necessities). They have it all. All. The cookbook "library" is great - even a chair or two for sitting and perusing before buying. And buy I did. A place like this I would expect to over-charge, take advantage...but no. Their prices were spot-on. The service was beyond friendly and were extremely helpful in assisting me with decisions - pointing me in certain directions and suggestions to help me narrow down. This shop has everything any cook, home chef, or coffee and tea aficionado could want. Visiting Der Kuchen Laden was easily the highlight of my visit to Fredricksburg. Although my posse and I spent over an hour there, I ended up leaving the shop without the item of my dreams - a 20"x6" gingerbread cookie mold. To remedy that, I called back the following week, and I was pleasantly surprised with the helpful and friendly staff taking my order over the phone. Contrary to what many other reviews imply, their prices are very competitive, and often far lower than that of national kitchenware shops, such as Sur La Table/William Sonoma/etc. Der Kuchen Laden will definitely be on the itinerary on my (hopefully) many trips back to Fredricksburg. read more

Walking by someone (or even a group of people) can be challenging - especially if you have "nature" like yours truly. But I love the stuff they carry here. This is a very interesting place. On the outside, it doesn't look like it would be big but it really surprised me when I walked in. There were so many rooms full of kitchen and cookware. I was amazed by how extensive their supply was. They have anything you could ever need in the kitchen here. Most of the stuff, I found was overpriced. I was looking for a Silpat baking mat and they were selling them between $40-50! Are you kidding me? I'd rather buy mine online for $20. I really don't understand why people think it's okay to mark up prices that much! This place is a nice place to browse and ohh and ahh at different kitchen gadgets but not a place for you to actually buy big ticket items because they will most certainly cost way more than the average retail price. They do carry Fredericksburg Farm items here and had our favorite dip mix, which is the Longhorn dip. It's the best dip mix ever and I'm really sad I only bought one packet of it. We'll have to go back and get a mini stockpile because it's really something you should have on hand at all times. It's THAT good. I found this store to be a little cramped but what can you do? Kitchen Wonderland. That's what this is. If you walk in from the door by the pond, you have no idea how deep this rabbit hole goes. And just when you think you've seen it all, boom! There's another little room... and another. Need an apron? Why, there's a room for that. Knife room. Tea room. Tasting room (yes, you read correctly. You can taste wine while getting your kitchen-gadget-love on). Cookbook room. Pot room. Wall-o-oven-mitts. Wall-o-salt-and-pepper-shakers. Lots of rooms. Little cute rooms. Gadgets-you-never-knew-existed-much-less-knew-you-need. Need! Why tear up your fingernails when you could have an orange-peeling-starter? Why cut that banana with a knife when you could have a special banana-cutter? These aren't the best examples, but that's all that's hitting me right now. Of course, they have all the fancy Cuisinart toys and KitchenAid mixers that you need on your wedding registry. Not recommended for those that have too much empty cupboard space. I am always eager to check out a small indie kitchen gadget store - hoping to find some unusual and better-than- the norm stuff. I was not disappointed. This place, in oh so charming Fredericksburg really stocks a very full and amazing line of stuff. I don't care for Wusthof knives, and that is mostly what they stock. But you could do worse. They dont really mess around with junky, cheaply made products, but stock a lot of items that are beautiful and well-made - not all of which cost a fortune. The place meanders back and back, with some narrow hallways, nice nickel a cup coffee and helpful staff. The staff tends to take the "I am going to educate you about this item" approach, so if you know better or disagree, like I had to, then it isnt worth getting uptight about it. They are just trying to sell things and be helpful. I applaud this small town store on its high standard of quality and stocking the unusual item, such every size of olive wood spoon, or gorgeous pottery. read more

As a Chef I love shopping in these stores. They have some nice knives. I was giving my family pointers of what they need and what to stay away from. They wanted a buffalo chopper and I asked an employee where they were located, but they didn't know what it was. It was okay with me until one lady was trying to tell my parents what tongs to get, and I got frustrated because she was giving them bad advise and trying to argue with me.
