This place reminds me of NYC based Curry In a Hurry but being run by one or two people rather than a whole clan there are less options. The model is similar and that the food is premade. Each time I went the only vegan option was Chana marsala which is classic. We also enjoyed the rice and a 'brown' one with green beans therein and the white one both with lovely long grains. The food definitely tasted rich so strict vegans need to consider if this is indeed vegan. It's near the Clifton train station so a great option if you're coming home late and need something for the table for dinner. The samosas were delicious again not sure if 100% vegan but we enjoyed. And the pricing was reasonable; the chickpeas with rice & one order of Samosa, which was plenty for the two of us to share, was about $15. This is takeout food; tell them you'll heat it up when you get home or they will zap your entre there. You can certainly eat there too. They had tables and they can heat it up for you. I live nearby and decided to pick up chicken kebabs as carryout (was good and spicy but a little pricey $4/kebab) because it was well known for it. When paying with credit card $10 is minimum. However, as I entered I questioned the cleanliness. The chairs, tables and food buffet counter need replacement because it must have been older than the town itself. Why all the bad reviews?! We had such a great and filling lunch for 14.99!! Pleasantly surprised by how good the food was here. I love Indian food. We drove by here many times but never actually went inside. The place is sort easy to miss. And hard to figure out if they are open or not due to the dark windows. We came here for the AYCE lunch buffet and there was a bunch of different things including butter chicken, tendori chicken, rice, etc. They make the nann for you on the side and the nann was SO good!!! Super fluffy and yummy to dip in that curry! Very impressed with how much flavor the curries here had. We left extremely full and for the price of $14.99 this is definitely a great spot. I love Indian/Pakistanian food. But this place was below standards. Way below. I had a Daal lentil dish with a side of rice, roti and garlic naan bread. When I tell you, I could make so much better food than this! The naan bread was burnt. It was so burnt that that's all I tasted was burnt bread. I didn't taste any garlic. The lentils had absolutely no flavoring, except it was really spicy, but no seasonings. So I ended up going back there because I forgot my son's chicken dish and decided to try the roti. The roti was even worse than the naan bread. The roti wasn't even as thin as it's supposed to be. Looked like the Cook just threw it on the same burnt grill as the naan because there were burnt pieces on the bottom of the roti Bread. The restaurant itself was a mess. There were no customers and the tables were dirty. I literally saw like a white dressing spilled on one of the tables, and a couple of the tables were broken. Literally in the middle of the tables there were cracks and the tables were leaning. That place is falling apart, and I will never order from there again. Spent over $80 for that? read more

Agree with reviews. It's uneven and the food has not improved with new ownership a few years ago. Also the charge for rice is a pure rip off. Most buffets make fresh naan for the table but here they put in steam pans pre made and it dries out immediately. Tables are awkward and too close in the main room when patrons are noisy. read more

Came in with a CoWorker for the lunch buffet and it looked boring messy and the food did not look fresh.. so we opted to order from the menu they had another buffet as soon as you walk in so I thought that was included but it wasn't we ended up ordering the goat Bryaini some Nann and a stewed Okra dish. One thing I didn't like is that they heated up our food in the microwave I don't even use a microwave at home so that turned me off second was the goat was chewy and not falling off the bone !! I used to visit here a lot when they newly opened for the weekend buffet and to dine in on weekdays. I stopped eating here when they started preparing the food in the morning or afternoon and reheating it when ordered. Additionally, the ratings on this restaurant went down, too, so I didn't think about dining here again. But I realized yesterday that them preparing the food in advance is not a bad thing! I had previously ordered the Chicken 65, Goat Masala, Palak Paneer, Chicken Biryani & Naan. All were tasty, but the Chicken 65 was soggy because it wasn't fresh that day. Yesterday, I ordered the Chicken Biryani, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Samosa, and Naan. The food came out quickly and was hot. I enjoyed the Biryani here more than other places because the Masala (flavor) was saturated in the rice, and the rice itself was warm and melted in my mouth. The Chicken Tikka Masala had thicker cut boneless chicken and did get a little dry, but you can simply add the gravy to it to add flavor and moisture. The Naan was made fresh to order. and they added butter to it without asking. It was so soft and Fluffy that I couldn't stop eating it. Overall, the service was great, and the lady at their front was taking care of everything herself. From answering phones, taking orders, and serving guests, I commend her for that. When we were paying, she even offered us to sample the Gajar Halwa and Kheer (so good!), but we were stuffed and couldn't order it. Very petty, disrespectful and unprofesional service plus at best mediocre food and questionable hygiene with flies buzzing around the open food & buffet area. I mainly liked 1 or 2 items there that I stick to, all else is too greasy. I had ordered 8 kabobs and 2 big curries. She quoted a high total price so I asked for a breakdown and she got pissed. In her telling me the breakdown, I realized she was charging me $7 above the listed price. Next, I had told her I was ordering for myself, my brother, my parents, and kabobs for pool party tomorrow. I even asked her for business cards to give out so i can advertise for her. I asked the young man for 3 tiny raitas (yogurt accompaniment) to give one each for family and 1 bigger one for me as I orderd 8 kabobs. When the woman (supposedly the owner) came to pack my food, he told her as much, but she specifically told him under her breath NOT to give me the 3 tiny ones, and tried to HIDE them behind some other things on the counter. I asked about those raitas and she called me a BITCH . So I left my order behind and told her to enjoy herself. If you can't treat your customers with minimal courtesy and respect, PLEASE SHUT DOWN YOUR BUSINESS. I always leave tips here for the other guy tall/big who usually runs the place but this woman who calls herself the owner just lost my business for what? 75 cents worth of raita???? PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU GET CHARGED!!!!! The prices don't match the menus and there isn't an itemized receipt. They overcharged us and then the guy got annoyed when we questioned it. Now for the food...we got a mix of the Chapli and chicken kebabs plus the chicken biryani and Tikka Masada. Kebabs were very good. They were very well seasoned and cooked well. Biryani had really nice flavor but we had literally 3 pieces of chicken. That was disappointing. Chicken Tikka Masala was more of the Pakistani variety that we've had vs the Indian version. Not horrible but it's not our preferred rendition. We would order the kebabs again but the whole overcharging incident left a sour taste. read more

Nothing had any spiciness (how does Indian food have no spiciness?) or fresh herbs--it tasted like the type of Indian food you can buy in those shelf-stable plastic packages at the Indian grocer.... It tasted like It was from some poor excuse for an Indian Restaurant (which It was as it turned out.) As I waited for my order, I watched as orders were being prepped for other people. There was a buffet-style counter with 6-8 pans of food in it and the guy would fill up a plastic container and microwave it. My samosas tasted frozen and reheated and nothing came with any sauce. The rice was well-cooked and hot but had a really weird metallic taste that I didn't want to think too much about. Yuck. I like the food here. I've only eaten here once. The only reason they lose one star is the chicken was a bit dry...a bit. But the flavor was fantastic and I'm a frequent Indian food devourer. When I got there at my "pick up" time, they scooped my food out of a buffet style tray, microwaved it, and put it it a to go bag. I smiled and paid. When I got home, there was a layer of grease about 1/2 inch on top of my chicken. Gross. I can't. If I can't eat something, no one can. I eat cold chef boyardee out of the can but I would not eat this. And they charged me an additional $7:00 just to add rice!!! I am vegan and the owner is super accommodating and helpful in helping me navigate what is vegan and offering additional items to ensure I get a buffet like experience as well. It's popularity has reduced . During weekend buffet it is a madhouse. Food items are not replaced quick enough and buffet area is pretty messy. Was working in NJ for few days and drove 18 miles to eat some Pakistani food. Took a while before I was able to order my food because employee was on the phone. Spent another 20+ minutes just to find out they were out of the main item I ordered (beef Nihari). The girl on the counter tried to sell me mutton curry when I asked for mutton Korma, she said it's the same thing ‍ When I decided to walkout she tells me my two naan and two kebabs are ready and it's my fault I ordered the dish that she was sold out. Didn't eat anything but the worse customer service EVER and an air head employee for sure. If she is a owner, I can see the reason why restaurant was empty. I visited Dera Masala Grill for a recent casual family Sunday brunch with my family in a relatively large group (6+ people). We had heard about this place from my aunt who had heard an Indian/Bangladeshi/Pakistani restaurant opened recently in the area. We were the only people there when we arrived around 1pm, but the restaurant quickly filled up just as we were getting settled with our food, but no one waiting. They have a $10 lunch buffet special, I believe, which is offered almost all week. It was a pretty great deal and they had lots of dish options such as goat curry, a beef stew, chicken biryani, chicken sheekh kabab, samosa, naan, channa masala -- so many options. The only downside is that they don't have a ton of space in the buffet dining area. There are 8 or 9 tables in the back and some of the seating is tight but they definitely make the most of the limited space they had. However, I wasn't sure what the etiquette for using plates and utensils for each visit to the buffet because there was no one coming around to take used plates nor was there a clear designated area for used plates. Also, because we didn't have anyone waiting our table, we had to get up and ask for beverages and tap water for the table. All in all, the food was really great and I didn't have any complaints, and I would definitely recommend this place to people passing through the area, which is in a convenient location. I've seen businesses come and go at this location, so hopefully Dera Masala Grill will stick around. read more

Finally a decent Pakistani takeout! We had been driving down to Edison every weekend to pick up desi food for the past 5 years, so glad this is just down 46 for us. My fav here is chili chicken and naan, I think I have picked this combination every week for the past 2 months! The only reason I took away a star was that we ordered nihari and sat 35 mins waiting for our order. Upon inquiring about our order they informed us they don't have nihari and our other stuff was still not ready. Just a little disappointed with it casual attitude. We came for the lunch buffet, which was all in all good and there was a decent selection. Food was not piping hot but I guess that's fine considering it was a really cheap buffet. I have to say that I am not an expert on Indian cuisine, but we decided to order chicken tikka masala because that's our go-to Indian dish and it was not part of the buffet, and it tasted really off. I have had tikka masala from plenty of indian restaurants and always liked it, but this time my boyfriend and I could not stomach it at all. I don't think this was a matter of the food spoiling. The only reason could have been the food they were serving because this place has been open for several years now and continues to do solid business thanks to very consistent, good food. The $10 all-you-can-eat lunch buffet may not vary much but offers white rice, byriani, several chicken kebabs, Tikka Masala, goat curry, dal, chana masala, an additional vegetable and chicken dish, naan, samosas, salad, and sauces, all kept fresh and replenished. This is Indian / Pakistani food priced and served as it should be (see my other Indian review from this area); inexpensive, generous portions, a casual, no-frills atmosphere. Terrific spot. Haven't got this ripped off in a while... stay away from this place. Wanted something spicy so decided to check this place out. They had all the food out in the open and asked me what I want. I chose the goat curry and a side of chick peas. I got three pieces of silver dollar sized goat and half full of chick peas. Paid for nan and to kick it all off the food was heated with a microwave. You would think an establishment of this caliber would be affordable right? WRONG. This meal costed me 21$!!! TWENTY ONE US DOLLARS! I liked some beef goulash thing, however i grabbed the last tiny piece of it and for 45 minutes nobody refilled it. The guy kept saying it's coming out in a few minutes, but it never did. I've seen other patrons waiting as well, but they left after 15 minutes. Since I was paying $10 for it, I had to eat something, so I went for some mushy peas. The first bite, I chomp down on something really hard. I pull it out of my mouth and it's a frikkin pebble. Thankfully I did not chomp down too hard since the peas were mushy, otherwise my meal would have to come with a side of dental work. I had my fair share of Indian style buffets but the food here was unsatisfactory to me. I went on a weekend around lunch time and decided to try their buffet. There were workers there constantly refilling the food. However, they would bring the food in a bowl and dump it in the buffet pot. So there was a mixture of hot and lukewarm food. The reason I gave this place a two star was the taste. Some of the chicken was dry, some were cold. The curry didn't have that much of a kick. The naan bread was cold and chewy. I ate about a plate worth but despite still being hungry, I just couldn't eat another bite. Lastly, throughout my whole lunch, I never got any water.
