Went a couple of months ago for the first time. Good was good and staff was great. As we went to pay a woman I assume to be the owner or manager approached the cashier, who I assumed to be new based on the owner/managers actions. She told the cashier not to tell people 20min on the wait list to go 5, 10, 15 etc. in the middle of our transaction delaying our checkout. As she walked back to the grill she stopped and complained to the waitress about the cashier. Then she continued to gripe while back at the grill to the other grill person. She did this loud enough for us to hear at the other end in a busy restaurant. I found this gross and frankly do not wish to return for this reason. My wife and I discussed the situation on the ride home and the owner/manager was not only unprofessional and rude doing it in front of and during our transaction but other patrons. It had been a year or so since we ate here, so we decided to go for breakfast on Saturday morning. Parking is all on the street and there is never a shortage. Inside, the restaurant has been tastefully redecorated with cheerful colors and a wallpaper border with Vermont brown cows. Service is excellent and friendly. We were told that the restaurant sold around five years ago and the new owner has left her mark on it in a positive way. We both started with a cheese omelette and added ingredients to make it the way that we wanted. The omelettes arrived about ten minutes later and they were piping hot. The flavor turned out to be excellent. We both really enjoyed our breakfast. In the past, we considered The Brown Cow to be an average restaurant but it has improved. My wife and I brought our Ford Transit Connect in to the Newport Ford dealer figuring we'd have to take a loaner, instead the body shop manager looked at the damage and decided he's fix it on the spot instead of ordering a (quite expensive) part. However, this left us with an hour or so to kill. The Brown Cow was almost directly across the street so we headed there with not many expectations, except we could sit down and eat while we got our truck fixed. It was a pleasant surprise. Despite being almost packed with a noon-time crowd (They seemed mostly locals which is a GOOD thing in a tourist town like Newport.), the service was pleasant and prompt. The owner has a odd sense of humor and since Vermont allows anyone to carry a concealed weapon we laughed and edged away carefully. He cost them perhaps one star. The food was well cooked and quite tasty and the grill is in the same room with the tables, something I like because the way the cook handles himself or herself tells you a lot about how safe it is to eat at a given place. And, it is basically a one-room diner on the interior. Watch out for the crowds, though, people line up to get in, it seems. I have eaten at the Brown Cow many times in the past, under the previous owner. I have eaten twice since it changed hands. The atmosphere and decor are much more welcoming now, I have to say I am disappointed in the food. The food is not as good as it used to be. For example, I ordered sausage gravy and biscuit with eggs over easy with whole wheat toast. The toast was barely toasted, although the bread was an excellent homemade. The eggs were fine , but the sausage gravy was an overly salted, gelatinous mess. The biscuits could not stand up to the gravy even though they appeared to be OK.
