My husband and I were on our way to New Jersey to celebrate my mom's 84th birthday. During our road trip, we planned to stop at the Hershey Park area and stay at a hotel there. We rarely take vacations, and I wanted my husband who loves chocolate to enjoy a visit to Hershey Park and Chocolate World. What started out as a pleasant drive through the Ohio and Pennsylvania, suddenly turned into a stressful and costly experience. We pulled into a travel plaza gas station to fill up and discovered our brake pedal went straight to the floor! Considering the prepaid hotel stays, the park tickets, and my mom's birthday dinner, we had our car towed to our hotel in Hershey, PA. The cost of the tow would hurt us greatly, but we felt it was the best option to be safe at the hotel we had already booked and allowed us time to choose a good repair shop. We didn't get to go to Hershey Park. We didn't get to go to Chocolate World. BUT we made it safely to my mom's birthday dinner because of Ed and his crew at Derry Auto & Tire in Harrisburg, PA! They went above and beyond working overtime to make sure our car was repaired in time for us to get to our hotel in New Jersey and be on time for my mom's birthday dinner with my family. We arrived back home safely with no issues. Thank you, Ed (& crew)! And a big thank you to the mechanic who stayed behind after close to finish the job! We're both in our 60's with limited income and resources. The stressful event during this road trip could've resulted in a far more dire situation for us. Thank you for being so kind and emphatically helping us when we were feeling helpless. While my husband stayed in the shop waiting, I stayed behind with our luggage at the hotel lobby after checkout time and sat nervously for hours waiting to hear our car was ready. This so called professional charged me a great deal of money for a full oil change which is fine, then after I pay the money and leave, I find out later when filling my windshield fluid that this guy never replaced the oil filter as i can see its the old one from when I changed my oil, which was a bright orange FRAM high grade filter. It was it and very dirty that told me nobody even removed / replaced the filter, let alone use a higher grade filter as most garages use Napa or Fisher auto part filters. I confronted the owner and he was very nasty, rude and pretty much said to me to prove it. I could as I have my original receipt for the FRAM filter within my auto records as I said to him to prove it that she changed it. I wanted a refund as I'm sure this nasty clown most likely never changed the oil as well since the filter was not touched. He called me a scam artist, a homosexual and said for me to leave is place of business and to never enter my estabishment again for the lies I told. Yes I want to scan this guy out of 69.99 and go thru all of this for a free oil change let alone calling me horible names. I'm not gay but I could imagine what this guy would do when one entered with a complaint. By other feedbacks here, this guy has a long history of being nasty to his customers, maybe he should sell his business to someone who really cares for their customers and doesnt pull stunts like this. My car broke down in Harrisburg on a Sunday afternoon, and this was the only tow truck available. By the time I got to the garage he had added up a bill in the thousands. But worse, he was very rude and intimidating when I hesitated to put this much money into an older car. He was angry when I tried to tell him how to open the hood that had been damaged. I called my husband to drive over 80 miles to get me. He was entirely more friendly with my husband. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with an auto repair! read more

They took at least 2 weeks to pick up my vehicle for a tow. Lost my truck for 3 weeks in their overflow lot. Did my inspection but not my emissions once they found it. Made me come back and wait 4-5 hr to get an emissions check done. They-have no care or consideration for your time. I even tried to call to make an appointment since I had to wait. Our car broke down on Rt 81 by Harrisburg as we were on our way to vacation on Sept 12, 2024. Called towing service and they recommended this shop, so we were towed there at 5pm. They were the only ones open, and they took our car in immediately to diagnose the problem. The owner brought us over to the car which was on a lift and explained exactly what was wrong. By 7 pm when they closed, the parts were ordered, the owner helped us find a hotel for th e night and had one of employees drive us to hotel. The next day, we were kept informed of progress and the car repair was finished by 4:30pm. One of their employees picked us up at the hotel and we were back on the road to our vacation. The owner even called us later in the week to make sure the car was running ok. read more

We went there to get 4 new tires and told him at the time of the appointment that 2 of the tires are not that bad and we wanted them back and wanted to pay with a credit card. He said that would be fine. When we went to pick up the car we notices damage to the tire rims. When we asked about it the owner began screaming at us being very defensive and said that is why he does not like dealing with "your kind"! WTH... We tried to reason with him and he continued to scream at us, so we just said let us pay and get our 2 tires the owner changed and said we had to pay in cash or the price would go up for any credit card payment! The 1st tow truck company my roadside assistance provider sent never showed and after 2 hours of checking every 30 minutes finally was told they were never coming, so my provider called Derry Tire & Auto and they called me directly in 5 minutes and had my car started within 15 minutes after that. I followed them back to their shop, where they tested the battery, alternator and starter and said all were okay. So I had them tighten the belts and change the oil, and even though it was closing time they stayed late to do the couples mall things that might help. When you need a guy with a strong work ethic who enjoys fixing cars and helping people, if you're near here go here first! These guys took good care of me, and I appreciate it! read more

Ok so bottom line up front, i will highly recommend this shop / garage for your vehicle. Just a few things they have done for me. Car wise Inspection, new tires, alignment. Truck wise. Roof mounted cargo basket, light bar, 6 inch lift kit, traction bar, tire alignment and mounting, inspection and emissions. The really nice thing is they're one of the few places around that can do an alignment on large tires. I have taken my 2 vehicles and my wife's SUV to this place. The price is very reasonable, the quality of the work done is good. I couldnt see taking my vehicles elsewhere. They even gave me a ride home. Keep up the good work guys! read more

I had an issue with my car on July 4th, nothing major, but enough to require a auto repair center to fix it, and of course no one was open. The folks at Derry went above and beyond and came into their shop, fixed my car in 40 minutes, and we were on our way. Caused damage to vehicle by removing locking lug nuts without key. Indicated work was needed that was not, such as turning of brake rotors because brakes felt "spongy" to the mechanic. Brakes were found within inspection specs with no defects. Customer beware here as not integrity was detected in my interactions with them. read more

I've been taking my vehicles to Ed at Derry Auto since 2012, when he was the only garage that was willing to install a set of very lightly-used expensive sport tires on my summer wheels. Every other garage said they would only install new tires purchased from them. Ever since then, Ed is my immediate go-to for any type of work needed. I sometimes feel bad because I'll stop by to ask when he can get me in for something, and he'll take me in right away even if I insist that an appointment is fine. I've sent two friends to him, one of who was rear-ended and had their exhaust pipe broken. Ed said to come in that day since it would be a quick job, and he was right. He welded a new pipe in for $70 and had him out within 30 minutes. Ed's a great mechanic, and one of the only honest and personable mechanics I've ever met. I don't know where the two negative reviews came from, because that doesn't sound like Ed. Take my word for it - you'll be taken care of quickly and affordably. read more

I had a bad experience here. I am a young woman and brought my car in for an inspection, I received a call that a ton of work needed to be done in order for it to pass, and that a check engine light was on. I had just had my car in a different shop last month and none of these things were wrong. My father called back and challenged what they were saying and then they changed their story and said "oh we were looking at the wrong car". I had called back a few times and if this was true they would have checked to be sure during one of those calls. But instead they wanted to take advantage of a young woman thinking I wouldn't challenge them. Very disappointed. read more

I will never again go back! First major problem is that they have no respect for anyone's time. Be prepared to have your car there for at least 2 to 3 times what they tell you, even if you're waiting. They will start the work and then disappear out of the garage while you're waiting in a gross room, and they don't come back to update you or anything. Next issue is that if you ask questions, disagree with anything, or cause them to do more work, you get an instant attitude. Goes from friendly to rude really fast! I broke down on the highway. That is usually about the most stressful experiences you can have I didn't know the area, I didn't know any mechanics. I was introduced to Derry Tire and auto by my insurance company who contacted them to send nthe tow. Fist off, Derry has an on staff tow truck and at least one dedicated driver. Over the phone, the technical appointment person was smart, thoughtful, caring and sympathetic. I get here and even though they are swamped with work, they got started on what turned out to be a mystery electric problem. I have an older suburban so the great electronic test equipment for today's cars doesn't work. They relied on knowledge, of which they Excel in. Its impossible to tell what exactly was my vehicle problem was, I think it was multiple, but they plowed though and fixed my suburban. They worked on it until 9pm...way past closing. Not only did the mechanic stay to make sure I got back on the road, but the owner and both the office girls stayed. One even drove me out for an ice cream! I cannot say enough good things about Derry. It is US Army Vet owned and operated which is a bonus. Every employee cares about their work and reputation. The best of the best! They rescued me from a destroyed tire and wheel coming out of a 283 cattle chute to avoid oncoming car. No pull off had to limp off exit. Completely dishonest! Told me my bleeders were missing from my calipers. Why yes they are, and you can see the fresh metal and circular marks from where they just GROUND THEM OFF! When spring came around, my AC started to make a loud grinding sound when I turned it on. I took it to another mechanic who said that the compressor was definitely the problem and that it was also leaking. I called Ed and told him, and he was very uncooperative and unapologetic about it. He made no effort to get me in so I could get it looked at, even though it was his fault that I even have the problem. I work all day during the week, and he just continued to tell me he is only open 8-5 and I have to drop it off. Obviously that's not possible because I have to get to work. When I took it in to his shop on my day off, he was very rude about me coming in without an appointment; again, as if he wasn't the reason I was there to begin with. I still have not gotten him to fix what he messed up, and I will be looking at my options elsewhere if possible. Stay away from this jerk. read more

Ed was recommended to me by my insurance agent, of all people, and I have been really happy with him. He is indeed very honest. He will not overcharge you and will not tell you that you need oil change if you don't the way other mechanics often do. He is also super polite and always answers all questions I have. He always arranges for a ride for me if the car needs to stay in the garage. I have no clue about those other reviews on here because I honestly never saw Ed treat anybody in the shop less than super friendly. I stop in this auto shop because I was on the highway near Derry Street when I got a huge...and I mean a huge nail in my back tire. Ed could hear me coming down the street. He got out of the vehicle he was working on to come take a look at my van. I informed Ed that I was late for work as I had been at a doctor appointment and that we were having a Christmas party that day. It took forever for the guy to show up with my tire. So Ed gave me a better tire so I could get to work for my party. Just as they were putting my new tire on the new one arrived. They could have taken the better tire off the rim and given me the original cheaper tire, but they didn't. I asked if my other tires needed replaced and they were honest and told me no. Everyone was very nice and polite. A friend informed me that she has been taking her vehicles to Ed for years and has been nothing but happy with her service. I am dropping my van off this evening for my yearly inspection. I hope to have no issues. I am pretty shocked by the 2 negative reviews on this page. I will give Ed a try. read more
