We had a cozy one-night stay at this historic hotel. My husband and I stayed here on a Friday night as we were in town for a show at the Civic Center across the street. If you're wondering, I he Civic Center is a 3 minute walk away, and the Farmers Market is within walking distance, too. We checked in a little before 4pm with no problem. Check-in is normally at 4, but I requested an earlier arrival through the Marriott Bonvoy app. The lovely and stylish employee (Miya?) who checked us in gave us a quick run down on where things were located on the main floor and then we headed to elevator and to our room on the 7th floor. Upon entering the room it felt a little humid. Noticing the thermostat was on 72, I just turned it down a little. We weren't in the room long enough to notice any issues. Those came when we were going to bed. The room was cute and the perfect size for two people. I love the bedding and pillows and the lamps on the nightstands. There was a mini fridge, Keurig and overall I liked the decor. The nightstands were a little tired. The bathroom was the size of a closet - tiny. Our sink took at least 5 minutes to drain every time we used it. I didn't like how the light switch for the bathroom was on the outside of the bathroom. We moved the toilet paper to a more accessible spot. By the time we went to bed our room was warm and we couldn't turn down the thermostat below 65. Other reviews stated that the west side of the hotel has ongoing and known a/c issues and that was the side we were on. While the view was great (we could see the Civic Center and giant see saw art installation from our window), we slept horribly. I started to resent having paid $220 for a sweaty night sleep. In addition to the hot room, we could hear our neighbor cough, talk, etc. at different points. The walls are super thin. It could have been worse, for sure. We turned on our white noise machine. The 7th floor hallway did have some popcorn on the floor on Friday night. By the time we left on Saturday it was still there. Kind of surprised me given that housekeeping had to have seen it. I requested a 12pm check-out (also through the Marriott Bonvoy app), and at about 11:30am housekeeping came to the room, knocked, and let themselves in. He quickly apologized and said he hadn't gotten the message about our late check-out. No biggie, but it might have been awkward for others. Check-out is 11am, but the signage on the interior door of the bathroom says 12pm. See photo. I'm still giving The Savery 4/5 stars because I had a nice time and love vibe and history of the hotel. All staff we encountered were very friendly. Next time though, I'd request a room on the other side of the hotel, especially during the summer months when you want to run the a/c. Also, there is a parking garage across the street for $1/hour. We opted for the parking garage and somehow got out for free on Saturday without having to redeem our ticket. Not sure if the ramps are free on Saturdays, but they were this day. The hotel offers valet parking for $35. I recommend The Savery because of the location, overall vibe, amenities (they have a restaurant/bar for dinner, separate restaurant for breakfast, and offer Starbucks drinks in the mornings all for additional $$). This is not the cheapest hotel option, but we couldn't beat the convenience from the Civic Center. It's fairly close to the Iowa Event Center, too. Recommend. Just request a room that's on the east side of the building if you're staying during the summer and bring your white noise machine or earplugs. read more

It was an okay stay, nothing stood out as great. The bathrooms were tiny! If you aren't a petite person you would have to sit sideways to use the toilet. Anyone over 6' beware! I'd assume if you were a larger person wide it would also be a challenge because of the distance to the wall on the side was also very tight. Everything else was fine it's a hotel. Rooms were good sized. Elevator doors were weirdly slow but not a big deal. Not bad for a night. Wouldn't want to be there a week. read more

Absolutely no complaints here! Got a last minute reservation at The Savery Hotel for a Friday in December. Pricing was on point, especially for the quality of the rooms and central downtown DSM location. We checked in early (prior to the 4PM time)-- the front desk was more than accommodating and knowledgable. She directed us to the nearest parking ramp (to avoid the $35/day valet fee) -- it was literally across the street! Less than .1 miles away. Can't beat the proximity. The hotel was obviously renovated. I dug a bit deeper into that and the hotel has been around over 100 years. It has hosted Hillary Clinton, Eleanor Roosevelt, President Harry S. Truman and more. The furniture is newer and rooms themselves obviously got a face lift though I do appreciate the original marble lobby floors. It was thoughtfully done about five years ago. Our room was more than adequate with ample usb plugs/outlets as well as a mini fridge and Keurig. I really liked their window fixtures. Normally hotels have kind of gross blackout curtains but this one used blackout blinds. Very effective (and less gross). We were able to walk to Hello, Marjorie and over to the East Village for a show at Wooly's no problem. (A shuttle is available free to guests but it stops running around 10-11pm.) There is a Starbucks just off the lobby, which was uber convenient. Additionally there is the Coda Lounge for drinks and shareable bites. I believe even a spot for breakfast? Truly, my on qualm was where the toilet paper dispenser was in the bathroom? It may seem like a super strange thing to note (and of course I didn't get a picture) but I am rather small and the dispenser was hard to get at even for me. You have to reach completely behind you to the left to grab it. Larger folks would have a hard time navigating these narrow bathrooms and the toilet paper placement. Overall, you can't go wrong with The Savery. I'd definitely stay here again! read more

Stayed here for a couple nights because I was attending a conference at the Iowa Events Center. The conference lodging was booked and I wanted to still be close. This was a great choice! I walked the first day, drove the second (only because I had checked out). It wasn't a terrible walk (though it was up a really big hill), in dress clothes/shoes, and I saw other professionals making the same commute alongside me. I am a lover of history and maximalist decor so I loved everything about this unique space. The service was also great. My room was plenty spacious for me to relax and work. No complaints. Charming. I also really liked that there are MANY food options within walking distance at all hours of the day, and I was able to do some exploring without needing a car. I will look into staying here again next time I need something in this area. read more

I stayed one night here for a work event, apparently if you stay on the west side, the HVAC has issues. It was mid April and I was sweating in my room and couldn't turn it down. That's just the way it is here apparently they told us they are aware of the issue. Pretty unacceptable for a hotel in my opinion. Otherwise the facility appeared quite nice, good central downtown location, walkable area. My room was clean and spacious and quite comfortable thankfully. Quality shower and good pressure. The staff was hit and miss, I crossed paths with a very unpleasant person and then a couple very friendly folks. I think I'll go somewhere else next time if I have a choice. read more

Stayed here for one night on a layover and I honestly hope I never have to stay here again. Went up to the room they assigned to me and it was TINY!!!!!! It was a corner room with two windows and all I saw out of those windows were buildings. Made me feel VERY claustrophobic. Couldn't stay there so I went and asked to switch rooms. All they had was an accessible room so they gave me that. It was 3 times the size of the original room they gave me and I had a view so that was good. The bathroom didn't have a shower door and everything was exposed. Water went EVERYWHERE!! Not to mention that when you turned on the water it took literally about five minutes for it to get hot. And when I say five minutes, I mean the long five minutes. Not good if you're in a rush! There isn't a microwave in the room so you have to go downstairs and use the one in the pantry. Not a big deal, just inconvenient. Not all rooms have a fridge but you can request one. Tho if you get one of those tiny rooms I don't know where they'd put it. The only thing I loved was the bed. While I appreciate historic hotels, i don't want to give up comfort for it. The airport shuttle is about the only plus I can say about this place. The two elevators are dated and slow so make sure you are not in a hurry. As a lifetime Marriott Platinum Elite member, I am almost certain I was given the worst room in the entire hotel. I am here for a work conference and my co-worker that has no status with Marriott receive a much better room. Avoid room #409. It has layout that doesn't make sense. The closet is on the opposite site of the bed. Not even worth using. The bathroom is very small and there is no counter space. The sink is tiny that it is impossible not to get water all over the wall and floor. Very difficult to move around in the bathroom given its size. The two evenings I was there, it took three minutes of running the water for the sink and shower before it was warm enough to use. The view is a roof of another building which is unsightly. The enhanced internet did not work well and the TV had poor connection. I do not plan on ever coming back here nor would I recommend. read more

Nicely updated hotel! The lobby is cute with 2 restaurants. The desk was welcoming, check in/check out procedure was painless. The room faced the courtyard so it was very quiet. There was a separate space for the coffee bar, separate sitting room for TV watching, bedroom area. The bathroom was small but clean and has a fantastic shower. Parking is the ramp across the street, about $10 without re-entering privilege but the area is compact and very walkable so there's really not need to use a car. There's ample parking on the street, meters are no enforced Sundays. read more

What an experience... Stayed here three nights. The first two nights we were in a tiny room about the same size as my master closet at home. Very little. At about 2am, the A/C in our room started dripping water on the floor and kept us up all night. We reported it and they insisted that we move to a different room. Initially, they were going to put us in another tiny closet sized room, but I had to pretty much ask for an upgrade - they weren't going to offer. We packed up and moved. The "upgrade" is a regular sized room that you would expect to see in a regular hotel. Much better experience. The beds are comfortable, the front desk staff is very helpful and accommodating. Never ate at the restaurants. Wasn't really feeling it. This place might be for you, but it's not for me. Tiny rooms, only premium breakfasts (additional costs, of course), no refrigerator - just know what you're getting before booking. Words cannot explain how small my first room was. read more

I stayed here for a work trip and have to say I had a really nice room and excellent service. The bed was super comfortable, and the pillows were awesome. I loved the Aveda Rosemary Mint products in the bathroom. I had to join their rewards program (free) in order to access wi-fi. I wanted gum one day but they didn't have it in their little shop off the lobby. I asked the front desk clerk and she said they didn't have any unfortunately. The shuttle drivers to and from the airport were both friendly and courteous. There is water and coffee in the lobby. There is a bar with happy hour, and a restaurant (I did not visit either). The double shower doors were an issue because one didn't stay closed and I worried about future water damage to the bathroom floor. I forgot to mention this at check out, but I later emailed them and received a response quickly with a thank you and that they were rectifying it with their engineering dept. Excellent. read more

Stayed here for last two nights on a road trip that took us to Iowa state fair. The location is great for the sleepy downtown. The restaurant scene is emerging here. The nightlife was also fun . We managed to attend the state fair and the farmers market which were both great events. The hotel is on the historic register and has a great deal of charm and character. Too bad for the guests it is not up kept. The hallways are littered with trash , and debris. The light boxes are all cracked in the hallway. No one loves this hotel it seems not even the people that work here. We came with low expectations anyhow based on its location. They don't offer street parking 1.00 hr garage parking. We were told at the front desk that they didn't offer maid service unless you call and schedule it. I took photos of the litter in the hall , I saw not one but two housekeepers and neither could be bothered to clean the debris which is still here day two. The housekeeper was singing a church song dancing in the hall with ear buds in her ears. I was embarrassed for this hotel at the level of port service of their staff . No wonder you need to schedule your room clean had to fit in between the concerts and dance offs in the hall way . The bar was supposed to be open until midnight at 1030 was closed down. No fridge in rooms. Bathroom missing tiles. Was a definite disappointment and will never return here. We weren't expecting a high end hotel , but it helps when people make an effort. Price was 200. Night ... half off that price would have been too high. Perhaps once you train your housekeeping staff on care of your building and ownership to their role people will then get the service they pay for and come to expect. No read more

My word of advice: Pay Attention to the Room type that you select when booking. Room size matters here! I've stayed here twice. The first time I was upgraded into a corner king suite. I LOVED IT!!!! My room had a hallway, two closets, nice corner sofa, plenty of room, a separate room with bathroom. It was nice! The second time I stayed was a couple weeks ago and my room was just a king room. It was a standard king room, nothing to write home about. The beds here are very comfy though. The bathrooms are all very small, however. I stayed on club floor (11th floor) and had access to the club lounge which was very nice. The staff here are all very friendly and accommodating. This is VALET ONLY which is $25 a day so you've been warned. I ate dinner once at Coda, the lobby bar, and my food was pretty good. I had the lasagna and was given complimentary chips and dip. I'd definitely stay here again. This is in a prime location downtown, right across the street from a plaza (sorry I don't know the name) where there are often activities going on. read more

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary weekend in Des Moines! The hotel is historic and has been modernized, but still has touches of its original history all around you. The location is ideal - You can walk two blocks and you're downtown. The customer service was great! The front desk receptionist was super helpful. He provided us with plenty of recommendations and a map. The room was great. I liked that the room and common area are separate with an additional TV inside of the bedroom. Definitely not a Renaissance as the types I am used to from Chicago. There is such a disparity in the sizes of rooms available. That would not be a problem but We had a fam of 4 and were given the smallest possible configuration AND paid the same as others receiving much larger rooms with actual sunlight and views. Definitely NOT FAIR! Literally our 1st room was a fire hazard. My husband accused me of trying to save money on such a horrible depressing room but the thing is I spent $700 on 2 nights!!!! Restaurant was ok but their prices were Chicago pricing in fact everything ,except parking, was Chicago high pricing which seemed odd for this hotel. I will say that small full sized beds were cozy, just be aware that 2 regular sized adults can barely share a full bed if traveling with kids. read more

Got it on Priceline Eighty eight dollars per night Mostly satisfied Was in Des Moines six weeks ago and had a great time so decided to go back this past weekend. Did the blind Priceline pick and ended up with the Marriott Savery. I stayed in the regular old Marriott a couple blocks away last time. I would have to say I liked the Savery quite a bit more. It is closer to the nightlife action and the room was much larger. It has been recently renovated and looks very sleek. Gripes? Bathroom was super tiny and there is no fridge in the room. Other Gripe? When I booked it on Priceline, they do not let you specify what type of room you want. I called them right after I made the reservation to request two beds. Was told they did not have record of the reservation yet but would call me back. Couple days passed and heard nothing. Called again and got general voice mail. Left a message requesting two beds and a call back to confirm. Couple days pass and heard nothing. Third time was the charm. Lady picked up the phone and quickly hooked me up with my request. Probably a five star, except for my gripes. read more

This is a sweet hotel on downtown Des Moines! And old historical hotel taken over by Marriott. The rooms are smaller but that's to be expected when it's a historical building. You do have valet parking which is nice and reasonable at $25 a day compared to many cities. The front entrance area is beautiful and has some hairy on the building for you to read. Everyone I met working there were pleasant and friendly telling me they enjoyed working there. The hotel is located in a great area to walk to restaurants, the ball park and the river and parks. Workout center is nice and big and has an on-site restaurant but I didn't try it so couldn't tell you much. Definitely made a great first impression and will be staying there more often when I come to Des Moines for work. read more

Its apparent the original structure was probably another historic hotel before the Renaissance took over and made the renovations. The room suite is very clean, has a separate area for the bedroom and an additional TV on the wall is a nice feature. Fitness center can be only accessed by reservation with the front desk. The equipment inside is satisfactory and modern. The downside is the food service has been eliminated and the club lounge is closed during the pandemic. The front desk staff are very friendly and helpful with questions about local restaurants and getting amenities that are available for patrons. Parking is not provided by the hotel and public parking for a nominal fee of ten dollars per day is across the street. Overall, a decent place to stay downtown. read more

I am a lifetime platinum member of Marriotts rewards club. So when it comes to their hotel chain there are certain things I expect. When I stay at a Renaissance I think it should be better than the Fairfield Inn or Marriott courtyard. At night when you pull the covers down I expect crisp clean nice sheets. To my surprise I had sheets that were threadbare and had a large hole in them. However I think no big deal all you have to do is let somebody know in this service oriented company and they will take care of a bad situation. So I let the front desk know and they said they would have someone from housekeeping do something about it immediately. I went to dinner came back several hours later sheets were exactly the same, I thought immediately meant immediately not the next day but that's okay I can wait. Came back the next day from working all day long it was time to hit the sack and I pull the covers down to find the same threadbare sheet with the same hole in it. I just think Renaissance is better than that. And normally they are but this time they really missed the mark. read more

The first Renaissance I have stayed at outside of Asia. Great location, within walking distance of a lot of bars and restaurants. They also have a van that will assist you to nearby places. The Renaissance in Seoul had a flyer within their rooms for Navigator recommended places to visit restaurants etc. Just a suggestion to the hotel. This hotel is now open after a complete two year remodel, and it's beautiful. I am sure it was a challenge to fit the new Marriott room designs into the existing structure, especially since this is a historic building and there must have been limitations. I had what we used to call a queen suite, basically a suite without a door. King bed on one side, living room on the other, with a high wall between that sectioned off the rooms. Comfortable rooms with the new bathroom design, large closet, smart TVs, all of the new Marriott features. Had a couple issues with the lights and they came out and fixed everything. The restaurant is fantastic with great service and locally sourced food. Bar scene was a little light on the weekdays but that's understandable. Come back all you fans! read more

My husband and I stayed here for two nights Labor Day weekend. The lobby is beautiful and we were created with a glass of sparkling wine on arrival (one star). We got to our room, opened the door and everything felt damp. I know hotels can get this way but it was bad. To the point when you put clothes on they felt wet as well. We were in a handicap accessible room and there was no tub or glass excluded shower, just a curtain, so water got EVERYWHERE. Went to the bar and the girls down there were awesome. I want to say one was named Robin but don't quote me on it. Super sweet, very attentive and funny. They get the second star. The third star goes to the shuttle driver who drives us to 801 Chophouse (hey it was raining don't judge) and went in to make sure we were in the right place. To make a short story long this place is long on customer service and the location is great but that is it. Rooms are tight, no fridge or microwave and wet feeling, which is just gross. read more

An older building remodeled into a hotel located right downtown. The front desk staff was very friendly and helped us get set up for the shuttle service to our dinner reservations for the evening. Our room was a corner room with some beautiful views of the murals on the surrounding buildings. The bed was comfy and I would have slept well, but the heating unit made random noises whenever it kicked on, thus woke me up every time. The water in our bathroom was also only like warm, so my shower was a little brisk. We enjoyed the on-site bar - great options and cozy seating. As for the shuttle we were not as impressed - the driver was not very talkative and seemed as though he didn't enjoy his job. Typically shuttle drivers will open the van doors and close them for you, he stayed out in the driver seat. Hen when we called to be picked up he didn't have the phone so the fro t desk staff said he would call on his way to get us... after 40 minutes we never heard from him so we took an UBER back to the hotel. So nice, I have been here a few times over the years as my parents have stayed here and I have attended a wedding here. I have also been to Coda a few times for drinks! I must say the remodel is fantastic.. The rooms both large and small are sleek and fantastic. They have great views of the city and really cosy and comfortable! The lobby is very nice and the bathrooms in the lobby are super unique and fun! There is lots of good artistic touches and selfie opps in the hotel! The history of the place is really cool and I must say every member of the hotel that I came in contact with were absolutely fantastic.. The place smelled weird, the beds were absolutely terrible. I had to settle for a double room even though I had booked a king months prior. The real kicker was I put my personal card down to make the reservation then tied a company card to the account to be charge as it was a business trip I was on. So far my personal card has been charged 600 dollars for a 2 night stay. I've called multiple times the last 2 days and have left voice-mails only to be ran around and not attended to. The Marriott Renaissance Des Moines savory hotel is in an older building but you would never know it by staying there. The inside is modern and sparkling clean. My room was the same modern, clean, well lighted and very comfortable. My only complaint with that the controls for the automated curtains are a little hard to figure out as they are not well marked. But that's very minor. This was probably one of the best Marriotts I have ever stayed in. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. We did not eat at any of the hotel restaurants but our convention had their catered food which was average to good. The hotel lobby bar (which I find most hotel lobby bars as not too inviting), was always busy with people socializing , drinking and having a good time. Very nice. read more
