I have worn glasses for 55 years, and I have never ever been to an eye care center that charges for an eyeglass prescription!!! You better have a thick wallet because it's not just the prescription that could cost you. At check-in, one of the forms to sign (if you want it) refers to refraction. I know the definition and have never heard it used to refer to an eyeglass prescription. I was told there would be a cost of $50* to get a copy of my prescription, and it's not covered by insurance. * in addition to the office visit charge The other issue was regarding co-payment and, once again, the receptionist and the office manager insisted that I HAD to pay the co-pay. I have dual insurance coverage, which means the secondary insurance picks up the remaining balance not paid by the primary insurance. This has been the case for me for the past seven years. Both women insisted this was incorrect. I paid! Now, two weeks following this encounter, I was not surprised that the co-pay was refunded back to my account ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Who knew, hmm, guess I did! They wouldn't give me a copy of my prescription when I finished my exam because they said I owed them $45. Wrong, my vision plan with United Health has a $0 copay. They had previously wasted half an hour trying to look up my insurance. So I had United Health call them. They straightened it out and told me that Desert Eye would call me and mail me a copy. They didn't call so after a few days I called them. They told me that they couldn't mail it to me because it was the Green Valley office??? So I asked if they could email it to me. She said that they didn't have secure email. The only secure email is encrypted so I stated to explain how it works. She almost immediately interrupted me. I asked her to please let me finish. I tried again and she interrupted me. Asked again and was interrupted in the middle of word. Wasn't even listening. So, I said good bye and hung up. They have always given me a quality examination but how can you put up with total incompetence? read more

Terrible experience! First, they overcharged me for the copay. Then they called the next day to say I hadn't paid it. Glad I had a receipt. I was also charged extra for reversing the dealation. That should have been included. Went in today with their written appointment card filled out by them and they said they had no record. A complete waste or our time! Said I had to reschedule!! No apology, nothing!! Very unprofessional! Would not trust them with my eyesight and neither should you. No one is training the front office help. Let them all go and start fresh! read more

My wife was referred to Desert Eye, for cataracts, and saw Dr. Rosen. So after the first visit, the next visit was to schedule the surgery, two different ones for each eye. Dr. Rosen was great, explained the process and what lenses he would recommend, and the surgery process. Also what type of anesthesia was being used. A few days later we had another appointment to sign the paper work. Had to pay a 30 dollar co pay to sign the documents. At the same time the Lady we were working with, suggested a different lenses for better reading and vision. An additional cost of 600 dollars. We called back the next day and agreed to the better lenses. The very next day we were called again and told there would be an additional 300 dollars to "remeasure" the eyes for the different lenses. Why were we not told when we were told about the upgraded lenses, there would be an additional charge? And last, the same Lady, told us that my wife would not be put under, just a twilight, sleep. It seems the front office is on a different agenda. The next day , we cancelled the procedure. We did not feel comfortable with the back and forth and UP sale of better lenses. Should have told everything up front. I would not trust them to operate on my wives eyes, with so much back and forth, and giving different information from the doctor and the front desk. read more

I saw Dr. Burrell in April 2023 for an eye exam followed by a glaucoma exam. I received a prescription for new lenses but when I received them I could not see through them. I returned the glasses and continued wearing my 3 yr old glasses. Fast forward to yesterday. Imagine my shock when I received a bill for $50 for not showing up or cancelling an appointment for some time in April 2024. This morning I contacted billing number on the statement (New York prefix) who told me I needed to call 520.327.5677 and speak to someone there. I called and explained I'd received a charge for not cancelling an appointment last month. When I told them I'd not made any appointment with Desert Eye, she was adamant I had made one at the time of my 2023 appointment. She also told me I would have received a reminder call just prior to the appointment. I don't know who decided to schedule me over a year in advance but I certainly did not nor would I have. Had I received a reminder call, text or a voicemail message I would have contacted them immediately. She said I must've because it's on their records. She then said she would pass the info on to management to see if they would "consider" waiving the charge. I am beyond furious right now. I am not a liar nor would I have ever scheduled a year in advance for anything other than the new patient appointment with Banner Health after moving here in September 2022. read more

Dr Mara performed cataract surgery on both eyes. My vision is better than it has ever been. He is the best.

The first available appointment wasn't for a month after receiving a referral. I went to the Wilmot/Speedway location. Was asked to show up :20 mins early for paperwork which is fairly routine for first appointments. Unfortunately I then had to wait for forty more minutes before I was called to start the exam. This was ridiculous and un-acceptable. First impressions matter and should have been my clue for the incompetence that was to follow. The exam was routine and was told I needed to return to meet with the surgeon so as to explain my options. I was to meet with a Dr. Mara early the next week. The day before the appointment I received a call that Dr Mara was busy and mot able to keep my appointment. Bummer but Ok will reschedule for the next week. Next week comes and again the day before received another call that Dr. Mara was again busy and needed to reschedule! I was offered a time one hour earlier than my scheduled appointment. I accepted. However, I received a text message to confirm the appointment for the next day at the original time. What?? I called the office the next morning to ask what was going on and was told that Dr Mara was again busy and I needed to reschedule! Strike 3! I'm busy too and there are many, many Eye doctors in Tucson that I can take my business too. Obviously Dr Mara does NOT need my or more business. This is not how new and prospective patients should be treated. Again totally un-acceptable! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this doctor/facility. Can only imagine what would happen if Dr Mara was "busy" the day of or during my surgery! The staff act as if they are doing you a favor! Save the headaches dealing with their nonsense and Spend your hard earned money elsewhere! read more

Today I visited the Desert Eye in Green Valley for my post op cataract consultation. I commend Dr. Felix for her professionalism and courteousness. And I am happy with my post op cataract surgery. However, I am deeply disappointed in the front desk. I have been a desert eye patient for many years. But lately when I approach the desk they do not greet you and I end up asking may I approach the desk. It would be nice to be greeted and to be felt welcomed. Today I arrived 40 minutes before my appt and I asked if I could be seen by by 9:30. Their reaction was very aggravating. I don't know the two ladies names but they looked at me incredulously. "LADY YOUR APPT ISN'T TILL 9:30. AND they BOTH LOOKED AT ME LIKE i WAS CRAZY for even asking. I left so upset I don't even want to attend my 2nd post-op next Fri. Is it too much to ask to be greeted and treated with kindness and some understanding? read more

I called Desert Eye Associates to see if I could get an appointment. My call was answered by an automated system so I left a detailed message requesting a call back. All was Ok until they became the mask police. Medical professionals should know that a cloth mask will not prevent a virus infection, but they're all on board, so you just humor them. Signs in every room. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR MASK WHILE WAITING. So Felix Tacaronte asks me a question, and I can't understand her, cause I wear a hearing aid and the mask she wears muffles her soft voice just enough. Finally, she starts talking very loud and leaning to within inches of my face. No social distancing here. Probably thought I was making fun of her mask, but I wasn't. Pull the mask down? No way! You should not mock the elderly who are hearing impaired. I came by it honestly, in a helicopter in Vietnam with a machine gun. read more

I went to Desert Eye Associates for Posterior Vitreous Detachment, without an appointment, they saw me and checked out my situation. The situation turned out to be a "normal" aging issue that, while quite dramatic to me, is actually typically benign. Anyway, the staff and Doctor were wonderfully nice despite my lack of an appointment. I recommend them very highly. read more

This was my first appointment, and not a routine one. I recently moved to the area and experienced some discomfort in my right eye. The staff I spoke with on the phone when calling in to be seen and in the office were all very friendly and efficient. I saw Dr Marra for the examination and I was given excellent care. He was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain what was happening. It's hard changing practitioners when you move, but this experience made it easier. read more

I Called Desert Eye Associates for an appointment as a new patient in October 2020. I explained that I was looking for a new eye doctor-clinic in Arizona and that I had not had an exam in about 18 months. I also said I was not having any problems but that I was almost out of my "disposable" contacts and needed an updated prescription for contacts. After waiting over 60 days for my appointment, I was "checked in" and seated in the exam room and asked the basic questions about my eye health. She left the room, and returned with the "announcement" that the eye doctor I was scheduled with only does eye glasses, and does not fit contacts. I thought it was a joke when she said no other doctor was available and that she did not know how long it would take to reschedule. I would have given this clinic one star, if the front desk staff and "check in" attendant were not both wonderful. I waited almost 2.5 months to visit that clinic and they didn't have anybody to perform both an exam and prescribe contact lenses. I'm still laughing about it...... read more
