After a 2 year COVID delay we finally took our tour . We had a beautiful day weather wise and Dan was an excellent guide ~ knowledgeable but not overbearing. Conversation was easy and his knowledge of Palm Springs & the valley was really informative. We took my Mom to Palm Springs for her birthday. Having been on our first food tour in Scottsdale back in January; which was amazing. We now try to look for food tours when we visit new cities. The tour promised food and history of the area. Our tour guide was an older gentleman (I don't want to use his real name). Let's call him, "Joe". Well, Joe didn't give you enough time to just enjoy eating and chatting with the other people on tour. Every time we sat down to eat, he passed around old photos and newspaper clippings. It was like he wanted to tell us, everything- I mean everything. When there could have been more moments to let us all relax and enjoy chatting about the food. Joe also had a challenging time remembering different words and/or phrases. Thankfully there was a nice lady on our tour who helped him out 90% of the time. He would get kinda of frustrated when he couldn't remember and would look at us like it was our fault. He explained to us at the end of the tour that he had fallen and his mind wasn't working as great as it had been before. I mean I have compassion (especially for older people - I take care of my grandmother full-time), but we still had to pay full price. He said Desert Tasty knew about his condition and still allowed him to work. Well, they should've had another tour guide work alongside him. Now for the food! Please see ratings with photos. The places were all really nice with the exception of the pizza place. They had the most lack luster presentation - the tables weren't ready when we got there and they only gave us water and one slice of a Mediterranean style pizza that some didn't really enjoy. A super fun highlight was Brandini Toffee. Hearing how the company was started by two teenage boys was really cool. The host there was so fun and informative and he gave us delicious samples. I wouldn't even consider myself a toffee aficionado, but maybe that was because I never had Brandini Toffee. Yum! Overall, I would rate the tour guide a 2/5 and the food experience a 4/5. Our tour guide, Eileen, was AMAZING! We were taken to such a wonderful variety of restaurants...food and service at each venue were friendly and wait staff explained each dish that was served. Eileen provided us with lots of history of Palm Springs. We loved Tommy Bahama Restaurant so much, we will be going back there for lunch. This tour was so fun! Our tour guide, Kristi, was amazing. Friendly and knowledgeable... as we tasted our way through downtown Palm Springs she told us about some of the local history. She took us by the I Love PS sign, Marilyn and a great art piece outside the Rowan Hotel. The food was excellent: from the stellar eggplant Parmesan and wine to the tacos and margaritas. We took the Palm Springs tour with Ginny as our guide on a gloomy Thursday with sprinkles threatening but had a nice time nonetheless. We've taken food tours all over the world and find them to be a fun way to try local specialties and learn something about a place we are visiting. All the tours share certain commonalities-small bites in several spots but this one had a few things that made it different: -less walking-all the stops were really close together -booze-it's unusual to get any alcohol, especially at the very reasonable $69 price, but this tour include 1/2 glass of wine at the first stop and a margarita midway on the tour -free stuff-both the olive oil stop and local toffee shop gave us small gifts (mini bottle of oil and small bags of signature toffee respectively) -more seniors-at 50 something we were by far the youngest members of the group of 8 on the tour -less local commentary-some tours are like a full history lesson, this one, not so much. -more stops-typically 4-6 seems to be the norm, this one was 7 -fewer local spots-most often good tours highlight really local, one of a kind businesses-and while there were a couple of those (toffee shop) there were others with several location and even one that started out of the area Bottom line: you won't be disappointed if you take this tour. I have lived in the valley for 22 years and FINALLY experienced one of Kristy's Desert Tasty Tours. The title does not disappoint! We tasted our way through restaurants in downtown Palm Springs with Arnie (a very seasoned and knowledgeable guide). He was informative and funny. The food was delicious at each stop (eggplant parmesan at Lulu, Street tacos at Maracas and pizza at Bill's) and samples at Brandini and Tutti Fruitti. Ernie, our tour guide, was great. lots of fun history info, lots of stories, he was a good guy, the tour is not much walking, just a few blocks, ernie made the short walks interesting. the food tour itself, is nothing great. compared to others ive done in other cities, its way overpriced for what you get, and the food offerings are basically that, "offerings". of course a full meal at any place is not exepected, but for $100 each, I expected more than a 3 bite morsel of eggplant, 8 street tacos to be shared with 5 people, and a very small, 2 bite slice of pizza. the yogurt shop (last stop) i was hopeful was going to be at least a decent sampling....each person got a 1/4 cup of date milkshake (delicious btw), and a tray of sample cups, 3 each of 10 different flavors (again for 6 people). the whole point of a food tour is to try new and different things, to showcase foods unique to the business. aside from the date shake, there was nothing "different" or new. All of the food was very good, but there was nothing special about any of it, and as stated, SAMPLES. other tours i've been on each place offers basically an array many things for each person, individually. splitting 8 small tacos, from one plate, between 5 people is not only awkward, but ridiculous. Weve been coming to Palm Springs yearly for a while now, and have done "everything tourists HAVE to" so we were excited to try this, hoping to find some gems or something new and unique as other cities have done, but.... Today was a wonderful day to start our tour with Palm Canyon Desert Tasty Tours. It was not too hot. This was my first time doing this type of event. I was a little bit skeptical about eating food because I am picky about what I eat! But when I got there, I met the tour guide, Kevin Cobb. He was very professional, super friendly and a great conversationalist. He put my fears at bay. It was a fun, educational and entertaining excursion. On a whim, my girlfriend and I decided to go on a food tour offered in Palm Desert while we were in town. So, we purchased spots on the tour the night before it, which was fairly easy. We went to 6 places: Wilma & Frieda's, Pacifica, Ristorante Mamma Gina, Savory Spice Shop, Wolfgang Puck's, and Clementine's. All the while, we learned bits and pieces about Palm Desert and Palm Springs. Besides the food and products, we usually look forward to learning about the area from someone who is considered a local. It's very tempting to give 5 stars. The feeling is there. However, here is why I'm giving 4 stars, which is still a good thing. 1) Arnie, our guide, was great. He was funny, engaging, and absolutely facilitated interaction, participation, interest, and enjoyment. What a jolly man. He is also a customer of the places he shows us, which tells us that he's not just a paid endorser. 2) It was strange that the first thing we tasted that morning of the tour was a dessert. A rich chocolate brownie pastry. We would have liked it at the end of our tour rather than the very beginning. 3) Pacifica had a very good whitefish seafood cocktail. 4) Unfortunately, Savory Spice Shop was the forgettable stop of the tour. The place isn't bad. It's actually pretty good. However, we weren't exactly wow'd by it. I think one thing I learned was that the term 'curry' refers to a mix of flavors, which is why there are so many kinds of it across different cultural cuisines. 5) Towards the end, everybody was worn out from all the food. We didn't even remember (or we simply weren't told) what our last tasting was. It was as if we were already satisfied from the first 5 places, and that 6th place where we ended the tour wasn't actually necessary. I've been to 3 other food tours before this, and I'll go ahead and say this was one of the better ones. I haven't tried the Palm Springs one, but I'm guessing it's pretty good like this one in Palm Desert. Tips before your tour: - Come hungry. There is plenty of food. Don't do yourself the injustice by eating beforehand. - Bring cash to tip your guide at the end of the tour. - Dress comfortably. Since we went recently (December), it was pretty cold. Other times might be much warmer. - If you've never tried this food, you're in for a treat. If you have, you can expand on the experience with what they offer. - Be on time. They'll still wait for you, but you don't want to KEEP them waiting. Tips during your tour: - Don't be embarrassed to take some food with you. Wolfgang Puck's restaurant served more for us than we could muster. In hindsight, I wish we took some of that lox pizza with us. It was an entire pizza! - Ask questions, but don't overwhelm the tour. Sometimes, there will be some people who are overwhelmingly chatty. Thankfully, that wasn't any of us in our tour. Tips after your tour: - Revisit some of these places if they seem interesting. I ended up having breakfast at Wilma & Frieda's the next morning and loved it. Heck, we even saw Arnie again! - Reflect on the tour. We compared it with the other tours we did. We also contemplated returning to certain places. Some were actually expensive, so we were glad we got a chance to taste some dishes from there. The tour is a pretty good time. Try it out! read more
