Beautiful store with helpful employees. The prices range from some reasonable to higher prices than other competitors' pricing, assuming the other stores are selling authentic pieces of furniture. I'm in the market for an Eames molded plywood chair--if I buy it here, with the current sale, it will be about $400 more than an online store. However, it will be an authentic Eames chair. For me, it's worth the price difference. I could get a knockoff chair for much less, and I appreciate that option. Still Eames is iconic, and I love the style. This store gave me a chance to sit and decide on the chair's comfort for my body--that's vital to my process. I like how the people who work here were well stationed throughout this massive showroom, but gave us space to look, touch, sit and talk. When we needed help, they were immediately responsive, knowledgeable and efficient. Our order was handled quickly and professionally, and all our questions were answered. I likely won't be back for more furniture because of the price point, but when I'm seeking inspiration for post modern design, I will certainly come back again and again. read more

Very cool items. Very pricey items. We stopped in to purchase a Herman MIller office chair. The first visit we were told to wait for the 15% off sale later that month. We waited. The sale started and didn't include the chair options we preferred. The second visit was for the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. We love chair and would have purchased it but I couldn't come to grips with the 5 year warranty. For the price, I expected a lifetime warranty for the manufacturing. There are too many other chairs like this in the market. On our final visit we hit paydirt! We walked in and this angel of a Studio Sales Assistant came to help us, Kiana was great! She spoke with the manager and was able to get us a Veterans discount, which at that point we purchased the Herman Miller office chair. The warranty on these chairs is 12 years, which will carry us until retirement. Kiana was the perfect Studio Sales Assistant. Great customer service! read more

If you are a fan of mid century design and furniture, DWR has you covered. The space itself is beautifully and thoughtfully designed like a gallery with white floors, white walls and lots of lighting enabling the furniture to stand out like pieces of art. Which they are Since this style speaks to me, I walk around in a daze, taking it all in, dreaming of hitting the lottery so I can buy whatever pieces I want without hesitation! But since the lottery is not in my future, I am very particular about which designer pieces of furniture I introduce to my home. So I carefully evaluate and test out before making a purchase decision. Plus, I want my home to represent me and not look like a DWR showroom. A few select pieces make all the impact one needs. While many other reviews complained about the lack of customer service, I was here to browse and didn't want to feel pressure or be accompanied while I walked around and took it all in, so I was fine being on my own. Before I left I had questions about availability and delivery on Eames dining chairs and Laura was very helpful. And friendly. If I decide to go with these chairs, I will definitely give her a call even though I can order directly online. Speaking of chairs, they have an entire room that displays every style of dining chair, all lined up like soldiers, for you to Test Drive. The chairs are all black for dramatic effect, but come in many colors and fabrics. Showcasing this way and allowing customers to pick one off the shelf and try out is a brilliant idea! Was not aware that DWR has their own parking lot, a rarity downtown, so thank you to the other Yelpers who have pointed this out. I'll remember for next time and save myself a few bucks! read more

I don't usually write reviews, but after more than a month of zero information about our order, I feel compelled to do so. Ordered 3 in-stock desks mid-June. Within days I receive a shipping confirmation. 2 weeks later after no desks, I message DWR. I get an response that it could take 48 hours to hear back. Within 48 hours I get a response saying it could be another 48 to hear info. Over a week later after hearing nothing, I emailed again. Receive a response that it could take 48 hours to hear back. A week later I get a response that they have no information for me. A week after that, my husband calls and is told they will not help him because they are already "helping" me. It's since been another 8 days and I have not heard a word. We called the shipping company and they have no sign of the desks. We are now 6 weeks after our shipping confirmation and no one will give us one piece of info let alone offer a solution. Such terrible customer service. I really thought this company would treat their customers better than this. This experience has been such a joke that Design Within Reach has become a punchline in our household. read more

Please READ before purchasing anything from DWR. This is my second purchasing experience with DWR. It was so bad that I started questioning myself. I've been working with DWR customer service for the past 2 months+ and there has been absolutely no progress. The issue was quite simple - I ordered a standing desk from DWR, and the item was delayed indefinitely due to the desk being damaged during shipping. I waited another month for them to ship the new desk but only to be told the desk was damaged again by the delivery company. I understand this is not normal time but I've waited long enough and I want everyone to know what to expect when things don't go according to plan. read more

DWR is not really within reach, within reach never mean to be the price but suppose to be the delivery time, . But I guess they failed that too. I ordered the Eames lounge chair and ottoman in custom color in Oct 2020 and as of today, Dec 2021, I still got no chair. They failed the first attempt of delivery in Jun 21 (target was Jan 21 but due to covid), it comes without the ottoman. The Sales placed a replacement order and double confirm it will come with the ottoman and it was target to delivery in Sept and it finally come today, but still no ottoman. Speechless read more

I've bought pieces from DWR on multiple occasions, and everything was acceptable, though the buying process typically hit a few snags. Items go out of stock without warning, the warehouse fails to pack something, or there's an issue with the hand-off to a local delivery company, but none of these were the fault of the people. The service is refreshingly regular, following more of a hands-off European style, where the employees leave you alone to shop for the most part but will offer an opinion or answer questions if you ask. If your ego demands incessant attention and superficial reverence while you browse, this will be a different experience. For better or worse, DWR and Hive are the only game in town for this kind of product. If you want the pieces they offer, you take the experience as well. I've shopped at both; Hive's ordering process is a bit better, but its showroom is pitiful by comparison. DWR's primary disadvantage is a comical lack of information regarding order status and delivery. In a time where I can order a tube of toothpaste from Amazon and receive laser-guided targeting on its location, it's inexcusably bizarre that thousands of dollars of furniture sails through an opaque æther to coalesce on a local delivery truck in a few weeks. I know much of this is due to the logistics backend, suppliers, and delivery services outside their control, but it's still an unsatisfying experience. However, the employees always told me everything they knew, even though that knowledge was often a confirmation of unknowing. Interestingly, I've even had some of the salespeople straight-up tell me why some of my design thoughts were misguided/bland/etc when I floated an idea to them. In a time when stores demand salespeople disgorge groundless adulation about every single one of the customer's selections, it's attractive to have someone refute your idea if they believe it isn't going to achieve what you imagine. This approach indicates that the employees have real opinions and ideas about design and decor, not just smiling, agreeable idiots selling generic products. The quality of the furniture is excellent. I've had no service-related issues, and every time I've had an unusual request, order, or problem, the employees accommodated me as best they could. read more

At this furniture store I feel like a kid in a candy store. I go around and drool over all their stuff, its all so nice. The furniture is all high end designer. The furniture you see knock offs of elsewhere. It is decidedly modern. Though some of the pieces have become classics. Everything is well made. The kind of stuff that will last you for years. This isn't IKEA and nor are the prices. The staff are always friendly and helpful. And if you get on their mailing list they will send you notices of sales. read more

The woman who used to own our house keeps getting catalogs sent here...it's not really a problem unless one considers the environmental implications. Still, some of the stuff is fascinating to breeze thru' & certainly gives a glimpse into a world I don't have going on (single woman, clean house, no pets...). The catalog for this shop has been drooled over for 2 weeks now & we do need some items. While I walked past the Berkeley version of this shop several times a week, I never went in. Today, I decided to check it out. I considered it a sign since the only parking space for several blocks was right in front! Everything in here is museum-worthy. It's beautiful, & timeless. It holds up well, yet, it IS very expensive. It's difficult to consider a purchase here in these economic times despite the fact the items I lust over will last far longer than I will. I realized I needed a much stronger lighting situation next to our bed. I think I'm getting to the point where the "mood lighting" is swell, but to read bedtime stories I need a strong light! Found one here! It was more than I wanted to pay, but the design, the quality, & the functionality will make it pay for itself several times over within a short amount of time. Contacted them by phone & email every month for 9 months and our enquiry is still not answered. Tabitha at Portland's DWR and I have spent more than an hour outlining 3D design of my new condo to help me better understand how to fit everything and brainstorm about potential DWR pieces that could work for me - after promises to share the design file - it has never arrived into my email box, even after directly emailing her. The entire time she was designing she was seated (more like reclining as she had her legs up) while making me stand, not even an offer of water or a seat even though I was about to spend thousands of dollars. Moreover, when I suggested that upon review I'd like for first shipment to arrive before making another purchase she gave me attitude. What a major waste of my time. read more

Unfortunately the delivery windows available (9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm) were incompatible with our work schedule, so we asked for everything to be delivered at the DWR studio (for $10 more, we did not mind paying a bit extra) Everyone has been very nice, Ayana was incredible at sending updates on the order. One word...Amazing!!! I've always wanted a Noguchi table and when I finally moved into the neighborhood I decided this was my chance! You only live once right? I called the store to find out details about delivery and timing. Stacy helped me and set me up in the system even though I wasn't ready to make the purchase. A month later when I finally came in to pay for the table Stacy remembered me. I looked around a bit at other furniture and everyone was so friendly! There is an excellent display in the showroom with so many options for all rooms in the home/office. This is a great place to browse and try out very unique furniture. Who knows...you might find something you just can't live without! Stacy especially was helpful and very friendly. I plan on contacting Stacy for any new pieces I need for my new space. Agree with previous comments that the service is terrible--particularly when it comes to issue resolution. It's pretty much non-existent. They lost my furniture and did not provide me any details on its whereabouts for 4 weeks! And I was the one continuing to ask for any updates. They did not proactively contact me at any point during this time. They eventually decided to refund me the shipping for the trouble and 6 weeks later, I still don't have a credit! I'm not sure what the point of having service staff are when they don't actually provide service. If you order from here, pray it arrives because you don't want to deal with what happens when it doesn't. We're not longer going to give this store our money. Not worth it. If you appreciate good service and modern design, there are other choices. read more

An ugly mannered store clerk working in the store around 6:30 PM made my awesome day go south for awhile! This is not how you engage new customers? I was looking for furniture to buy for my daughters new apartment and we'd driven from California, and were in a rush to finish shopping! She left such a bad taste in my mouth, this blonde lady! We merely asked where the bedroom furniture was and her response was " everything is everywhere" and then did not offer to help any further! But.. did follow us around the store, lol! Such people, don't deserve to support customers' please train her as she sucks!! You guys lost a customer who had come in to buy a whole apartment full of furniture! I worked with Kristie to redecorate a room in my house and she was helpful, knowledgable, and a very easy person with whom to work. she was incredibly prompt, quickly responding to my phone calls and emails. the custom pieces arrived individually, but on time, by white glove delivery. Stopped in to check if I could get a replacement foot for my Eames chair (which I have looked for everywhere to no avail) and was surprised that not only was Stacy able to order me one on the spot but also gave me a new appreciation for my chair by educating me on the finer points of changes in the chair throughout it's 50+ years of production. I have just had an amazing customer service experience at DWR. I ordered a Satellite chandelier, which is a new product. It has 24 arms with a light bulb at the end of each. When we installed the chandelier, one of the arms was dead, so the bulb didn't light. I called the store and told Stacy Day about the problem; it took a few days to get everything straightened out, but DWR 1) shipped me a new chandelier; 2) arranged for pick-up of the defective chandelier; and 3) -- this is the amazing part -- actually reimbursed me $150 I spent having the old one taken down and the new one put up. Not a store credit or anything -- actual money. Both my electrician and architect said they have NEVER seen a business do that. Stacy was 100% helpful, including giving me her personal cell number so I could contact her on her day off. I've always loved DWR's products, but this was above and beyond. read more

The two girls in there completely ignored us, basically just walked right past us and continued rearranging whatever they were rearranging. I had already done a lot of online research and felt fairly prepared and educated on the subject, but Stacy still had a lot of insight to offer and was a pleasure to work with. She has a long history with a lot of the products and loves to share that knowledge. I troubled her for loaners several times before finally deciding on the Herman Miller Aeron. I have shopped at DWR locations around the country when I was living in Los Angeles and New York but my favorite location has always been the studio in Portland. While the space is amazing and a great venue to see the amazing modern collections from DWR in person, what makes this location special is the customer service and knowledge of the store manager, Stacy Day. Stacy is exceptional at both understanding your needs and helping you make selections with a great personal touch and she has an incredibly deep background in design that really shines through. She introduced me to several great designers available through DWR and she even went so far as to provide information on designs I had seen in magazines or online. In addition when I mentioned that a lamp I had purchased years ago at DWR was missing a small piece, Stacy took care of the whole situation and made sure I got the part delivered to my home in just a few days. We are lucky to have access to great modern design through this showroom and even luckier to have somebody like Stacy to work with. If you have an interest in modern design and want to work with somebody who is knowledgeable, friendly, and will make sure you have a great experience, I cannot recommend her highly enough. He was extremely helpful and acted very professionally while he showed me the differences between the styles of chairs they represent in the store. I've been in the service industry for over 30 years. When you receive quality customer service, I have to let the sales representative know how gracious I am about that fact. The review is about the customer service, not the furniture. This is the second time I am writing a bad review for Design Within Reach. I wrote one a few years ago and deleted it later because the problem we had was resolved after a while. After that, we did not really want to go back to the store but gave in because there are not that many furniture stores which carry MCM furniture in Portland and we don't like to buy furniture unseen off the internet. As MCM is our passion, we decided to give DWR another try. Over the years we have bought many pieces from DWR, and we wanted to get a Bensen desk this time. It has to be custom-made and we ordered it in March. We were told it would take 8-12 weeks for delivery. Finally, after four (!) months at the end of July, the piece was finished and delivered. However, the two desk drawers arrived damaged. After complaining, the two drawers were re-ordered and we were told it would be another 12 weeks for the new delivery. In the meantime, the damaged drawers were not picked up. Finally, after another three month, at the end of October, we were told there would be yet another delay and the estimated ship date for the drawers would be December. As we had become quite unhappy with the whole process, this was the time we cancelled the order expecting a full refund. We were told then that this was fine, they would start the return process and contact the delivery agent to pick up the remains of the desk. That was three weeks ago. We are still waiting. No explanation was given as to why Bensen cannot deliver, the desk has not been picked up, the money has not been refunded and there isn't much help coming forth from the store other than that they are working on this issue. This time we have definitively learned our lesson and will give DWR a wide berth from now on. Edit 11/23/15: The desk was finally picked up, but after five weeks our money has still not been billed back. I don't think I have ever seen a botched-up order and return so incompetently managed. I ordered a Bantam sofa and chair with shipping estimated to be in 6-8 weeks. However, it took 11 weeks and worse yet both pieces arrived damaged, reportedly because of poor packing. I called the Portland proprietor Stacy Day to discuss what happened. I also asked her if I could change the fabric with the re-order. What started out as a bad experience quickly turned out to be fun. I met with Stacy and she spent a lot of time with me reviewing fabric samples. She had me take 3 samples home overnight saying "measure twice and cut once" so I would make the right choice. Stacy said shipping was currently taking 10-12 weeks but turned out be be only 9 weeks! I didn't receive a tracking number so I called the 800 service number and also sent an email to service@dwr.com requesting the number without any result. Stacy also had difficulty tracking the order but it arrived in Portland on time with no damage. It is beautifully made furniture and I'm very happy with it. This year I also purchased a Nelson saucer light fixture and Herman Miller Setu task chair. There were no issues and I enjoy having both of these items as well. The merchandise and the store are phenomenal. The customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I spent a ton of money there and then our favorite sales guy moved to Europe. Ever since, it's been one poor customer experience after another. They take longer than Hive, aren't as courteous, and their shipping policies are just a flat out a rip off. They lost a customer.
