I have long, thick, plentiful hair that I cut maybe once every two years at most, so I'm a little bit particular about how I like it cut. Nikki made sure to accommodate what I wanted and also added her own flair, walking me through every step and making sure I loved it. She's amazing for wavy/curly hair and definitely provided a PHENOMENAL service. I can't stop touching and looking at my hair! This review is for the experience I had a while back. I left a tip before but wanted to share my experience. I came here for a hair cut and then later for a dye job. I had just moved from out of state and was very hopeful to find my new hair place with desired effects. The first time I came I got a hair cut from Ana. We engaged in the normal small talk and I shared my desired length and she then proceeded to tell me that the look I was going for would be better if I didn't cut so much off. I explained that my hair grows really long and really fast (I have thick Asian hair) and convinced her to go with my choice of length. The cut ended up being uneven. She took a lot of pride in her work and I didn't want to hurt her feelings so I just let it go, my hair grows fast anyways. I later called to set up my hair dye appointment and was hoping to try a new girl out especially someone with such great reviews for their expertise in dyeing hair. The receptionist told me that Ana was fit for the job and everyone else was already booked. Hesitantly I took the appointment. When I went in Anna instantly made a comment about how fast my hair grew. She sat me down and we went over pictures of my desired look. I understand that since I have dark hair I wouldn't achieve the blonde highlighted ombré look I was going for right away but I stressed the importance of not wanting to leave with a brassy color. She assured me that wouldn't happen and she would make it very subtle now and I could come back later to keep lightening to achieve the look I wanted. She told me about how she went to all these hair conventions and classes she was taking for hair coloring which put me at ease feeling like she had all this knowledge so what could go wrong! Well everything kind of did. As she lightened my hair she told me I had to pay early so the receptionist could go home. And when I was sitting in the sink waiting for the toner application I heard her go to another worker asking for advice in which toner to use because she was unsure of "how to correct it". I was nervous because I haven't seen what my hair had looked at this point. During the whole dye process I had layers and layers of foils in my face so I couldn't see the mirror and when she made me go pay my hair was wet with a towel on. Eventually she blow dried it out and it was orange. She didn't even try to tone out the brassiness or at least recommend a good purple shampoo(purple shampoo didn't do the trick)! I mentioned so many times that I didn't want it to be brassy or orange and that's exactly what I got. She said the dye was still fresh and would settle over night. Idk what that means but I still woke up with orange hair. Since they were closing she kind of scurried me out. My appointment was at 1pm and I left the store past closing time. How could I have been there for so long and get the complete opposite of what I asked for. The whole we'll start subtle plan was not evident. There was nothing subtle about my orange hair. My coworkers even teased me about being strawberry shortcake. I was starting a new internship in a couple days and became super self conscious. This time I knew I had to say something because it was more than just an uneven cut. I called and I spoke to the manager. I forgot his name and he was absolutely rude. He told me I was insulting her work and he saw her do a "fabulous job" and I couldn't go any where else and get this quality (I have had way better service at Ulta than this place)and my hair would be damaged Ana did it the way I requested. I was so upset and explaining to him what happened and he wasn't having it. He told me the only way I would get a full refund was if Ana dyed my hair black. So frustrated by the way he was talking to me I tried bargaining with him almost on the verge of crying. Telling him I didn't feel comfortable with that nor did I trust anyone from the salon to touch my hair again because of the attitude they had towards me and especially I just got my hair dyed and since I received a dye job that ended up being exactly what I didn't want. I kept telling him that I'm losing money for having to get it corrected and I had a new internship coming up and people were already making comments about my horrible dye job. He just kind of laughed. Finally after begging and begging he agreed to give me 50% of my money back as long as let Ana keep the tip I gave her for her time. Ana even posted my the competed dye job on her instagram and it looked different than the one I have. After she took the pic in the salon I asked her to take one on my phone too ( I wanted to see the difference between now and in the morning when the color "settled"). I ended up getting my hair color corrected and perfected at Cutie Salon near Carson! They saved my hair!! I wouldn't have not bothered with this review but you just don't treat people rudely especially when you're providing a service. read more

I have been going to Desired Effects for cut and color the last 3 years. My original stylist (Jamie) left and I'm now with Katrina. I cannot say enough about how I love the color, highlights, lowlights! I take a picture of a style I like and she has no problem giving me that cut. I have a lot of very fine hair so I'm sure it's not easy to work with. The salon is always clean, and has a happy atomosphere from the moment you walk in. Michelle is my girl! I've visited other high end salons in Studio City and Sherman Oaks and while my hair looked amazing walking out today the salons, the experience was not what I expected. My stylist were snobby and worked quick to get you out of the chair to move onto their next client. I wanted to try a new place closer to home and found Desired Effects on yelp chose them because of all of the great reviews, I called Tuesday afternoon to see if they had any openings for Wednesday and the receptionist told me that Michelle could see me I booked my appointment and started to try and find any pictures of her work on yelp but couldn't find anything. I showed up Wednesday hesitate due to not knowing seeing any of pictures or reviews for her, but I'm so glad she was my stylist. She did such an amazing job she asked questions and listened to what I wanted gave me input and explained everything she was doing. She took her time and didn't rush at all! Ana is the BEST. I recently spent $50 on a haircut I was very unhappy with and was in a state of skepticism in potentially finding a random hair salon in the Simi Valley/Moorpark/Thousand Oaks area that would be 1) affordable, 'cause I ain't made of $$$, and 2) able to bring my hair vision to life. I initially scheduled a consultation with any available hair stylist at Desired Effects that day, just to test the waters, and luckily I met with Ana. She was absolutely patient and thorough, expressed her professional opinions and recommendations when needed, and after 20 minutes of talking to her, I decided to take the leap (and cut). She did a great job on my undercut, telling/showing me exactly what she intended to do through each step of the process, went over and beyond with massaging my neck and scalp while shampooing my hair, and even styled my new 'do without any additional charge. The consultation, cut, and styling costed $35. Unheard of. I already recommended Ana to my twin sister (coincidentally also named Anna), and will be sending everyone I know over to her. From what I could see, everyone at Desired Effects is friendly, professional, attentive, and supportive. Love the atmosphere, love the people, and I love my newfound confidence! read more

My husband and I went in the same time for our haircuts. I was very excited as this seemed to be the only place in town experienced with cutting edgy hair styles. The place is very cute, well maintained and clean. The front desk staff were friendly and smiling, and it made us feel welcome. However, our stylists, to a degree, were not. We were seated next to each other, and right off the bat we received one of the strangest comments we have ever experienced with a hair stylist. My husband's stylist began to laugh as we asked for undercuts. I myself already have one, with half my head shaved, and he wanted a more masculine version. His stylist rudely called our haircuts "d***** bag cuts". Excuse me? It was completely unwarranted and a turn off as she continued to tell us stories of those "hipster d-bags with undercuts". Wow. Way to insult your clients. The rest of the appointment was more or less fine. Overall, the my stylist did not seem experienced or sure of herself, and was hesitant to make suggestions or take initiative. My hair was trimmed and done in about 25 minutes along with my husband. It was $35 for each of us, and they charge an extra $15 just to dry your hair, so we opted out as it was already raining outside. I prefer a stylist who has more experience and does not insult my haircut or assume lifestyles. read more

I recently moved to Simi Valley, and I was determined to find a salon in town. I of course yelped many salons, and came across Desired Effects. I read so many great reviews, so I went ahead and scheduled an appointment. I am so happy that I was able to meet Gina! She is AMAZING! Not only is she a sweetheart, she's very professional. She listened to my concerns, and she cut and styled my hair with such precision and diligence. Not only did she give me a fabulous new style, she assured me if I had any issues with my new cut I can come back in. That type of offer is unheard of in L.A. She was also very personable and wrote down some places in Simi Valley that I can check out as I am new here. She went above an beyond and can't say enough about her! Gina is fabulous! Also, I was very impressed with the salon as a whole. It was clean, everyone got along, all other customers that I observed seemed very happy. It was nice to hear that the owner believed in education, so to know that the stylists are constantly learning and perfecting their skills is always a plus. Ok, usually I'd have nothing but good things to say about Desired Effects... I've been here 3 different time with 3 different people, Tiffany, Jamie, and now John. And I loved Tiffany! She did amazing things with my hair. Loved it! Jamie was really good too! She cut my hair PERFRCTLY. And I just got my hair done today by John... I felt like he was rushing, he was yanking on my hair and tearing out any knots that I had in the hair, which hurt. He left me alone while he was washing my hair so he could do some other things. I didn't like that, nor has that happened before. To top it off he didn't really dress or act like he wanted to be there. I mean He cut my hair well but he cursed allot and it made me feel uncomfortable. I'm giving Desired Effects a 3 because they've been amazing before, up until this point. Personally I don't think I'm going back to John. He was pricey. I paid $49 just for my layers no style... Usually it's $35 for just a cut... I feel ripped off. All and all I'd defiantly recommend Jamie or Tiffany, both really great stylists! read more

I loved everything about this salon but mostly Jamie! She was so sweet and really easy to talk to about my hair. She let me show her pictures but helped guide me in a good direction for my hair which is real thick and can be unruly at times. She was a slow and cautious cutter and checked in with me to make sure it was what I wanted. I am so pleased with my results and I am excited to have found a place I want to come back to! Also, I should note that I called and asked if I could come in within a few hours. The girl at the front desk didn't make me feel bad for my impulsiveness and said let me check for you. She came back and said that Jamie was willing to stay later to fit me in. How nice is that? Both girls at the front desk were sweet and welcoming. It felt like a very warm environment! I was also pleased that there products weren't 50 dollars! Jamie picked two that she thought would be a good but for me but it never felt pushy! First, this salon is so friendly, clean and calm. Kira understood what I wanted and went straight to work. Other stylist from time to time would chime in on how the cut was going and making suggestions. No infighting here! The end result was the best hair style I have had in over 20 years. Jason Newell from Laguna Beach -- now in Louisville Kentucky, and Dezra in Pleasant Grove, Utah. I write this because I go into hair salons with much trepidation -- as curly haired girls can relate to i'm certain. Today I made an appointment at Desired Effects in Simi Valley due to the great write-ups on YELP! I went in wanting a trim to clean up my curly-Q hair that I had been snipping away at on my own. I didn't have an expectation for anything more then the usual trim and product sales push because I haven't seen more then that outside of the two stylists I mentioned. I got LUCKY! Nikki was the stylist who gave me a lovely hair cut. She cut precisely, educated me about curly hair, showed me ways to style my hair that didn't require too much extra time and she didn't try to up-sell on products! She spoke of methods and hair colors/shades that I was familiar with because of the 20+ years of hair education I heard from Jason as he cut, colored and produced the most gorgeous and stylish hair cuts I ever had. That was very reassuring to me and magnified to me that she knows her stuff. AAnyway, I gave the salon a try due to the positive reviews people wrote about Desired Effects Salon. The only difference was the price. When I called, I was quoted $35. for a hair cut. I was charged $55. I didn't say anything because Nikki spent a lot of time on my hair and went the extra mile. I took picture of my hair cut so curly haired girls can see the soft ringlets and bounce she brought back to my hair, but can't figure out how to do that just now. I've been going to this salon for a few years now and I am still just as impressed as the first time i made an appointment. I was lucky enough to get Ana morales the first time i stepped into the salon and she's very talented much like every stylist there. When making the appointment they set you up with a time and day card, and call you the day before just to confirm your appointment. Ana has taken me from being platinum to brunette to red to bronde back to red & who knows what I may want next time. I had never heard of this salon before, but needed an appointment before the 4th of July. I called and was able to get in the same day. SUE STEMKE is AMAZING! I had uneven color with a previous bad bleach job. Sue was able to give me a beautiful all over buttercream blonde, and she also did extensions the very next day! My hair appointment took hours, but I had a lottt of work that needed to be done. She was very accommodating for it being a last minute appointment. Without my hair needing so much to bring it back to life, the appointment would have been much shorter. That being said, she is truly a professional! Sue is very sweet, and highly talented. I recently went to Ana and she did an amazing job! She cut my sister's hair and then mine and we both love our new hair. I had really long hair and I had her cut it short and highlight it. She picked the perfect color for my highlights. I was so nervous to cut it but she did a great job. My cousin saw my hair and made an appointment right then.
