Aly Frank updated my hair after a long period of letting it grow out and having a disappointing experience with my previous stylist. She was a great listener: understood my inspiration pictures and asked follow up questions to make sure she understood what I wanted. She did a beautiful balayage and cut and honestly my hair never looked better. I don't get my hair done that often so she styled the highlights and lowlights in a way that let them grow out naturally so the maintenance is easier to accomplish. I scheduled an appt with her two months in advance and when the day came, she said she assumed it was at a different time because she wrote the time down incorrectly in her calendar. It's really hard for me to find a hairstylist because I'd like to get highlights and my hair is dark and thick and usually they highlights turn to orange, brassy color. I called this hair salon and the receptionist was very nice and gave my number to a stylist who texted me within hours. Allison was the stylist I was lucky to get an apt with. She listened to my concerns about the grays in the sides and she started working in my hair. I was nervous but when she revealed the results I was more than impressed, she really got it right and cool down my hair and no orange! I highly recommend Allison! read more

This was my first visit to Play hair lounge, I had Ericka, and I could be happier. I was able to explain exactly what I wanted, and Ericka delivered! Carly has been styling me for what feels like forever, and I'm so grateful to have that special bond with someone. This hair salon is well maintained, cute and lively. All the chairs were full when I arrived. I was greeted right away and felt very welcomed. They also use Bumble & Bumble hair products which are great. My stylist was Ceanna and she did a fantastic job on my hair. It was down to the middle of my back and lifeless and she helped me get the half shaved/lob I've been wanting for years. She also made sure that the half shaved part could be will hidden as I work an office job. I've bounced from salon to salon but I think I finally found a place to keep going back too. After reading all the reviews here on Yelp, I called this place and made an appointment and drove over from Thousand Oaks. Located right off the 118 on Kuehner Drive, this hair salon is incongruously located amongst a bunch of medical businesses in a strip mall. I first came in contact with Amanda on the phone and she recommended Sam for my kind of hair. I am so pleased with Sam! She colored and cut my fine, troublesome hair. It's the best haircut I've had since moving back to Thousand Oaks in 2001, and it's long overdue. The salon has an industrial edge and you HAVE to check out the Barbie chandelier in the restroom! Like others have previously noted, the salon generously offers your choice of beverages. That in itself is a rarity. Their shampoo chairs are like none other I've ever experienced. You actually lay down in them and your neck doesn't hurt at the shampoo bowl. Another plus! It's pretty cool that you can email your particular stylist or leave them a message on their own phone. Everyone I came in contact with was very polite and nice. I definitely will be making another appointment! The only drawback for me personally was the music they had on - something called "Slacker Radio" which was some annoying 20-something angst that made me want to pick up something and throw it at the speakers in the salon. No beat, no rhythm, just mournful caterwauling. Ugh! It really got on my nerves. Otherwise, a great experience, I felt cared for, and I walked out with a haircut, color and style I was proud to show off to the world. And the Bumble and Bumble products are a super line that I could get addicted to quite easily. Sam even gave me a pre-printed list of B&B products to use particularly for my fine hair. No salon has ever gone that far for me, at least. Wow. Sam even showed me how to use a particular attachment for my hair dryer to style my hair to its full advantage. I was awed at how much time and how much attention she gave me. Thanks, Sam! Then a day after, I received a postcard in the mail with the salon's logo with a handwritten message from Sam, saying how much she enjoyed helping me with my hairstyling needs. Aly is amazing! She's exceptionally skilled, she's attentive to what you want, but also honest abut what may or may not work with you, your style and you level of desired daily maintenance. I've been wanting a long mohawk for a VERY long time. She explained that she thought it would look great but suggested that I soft-start with a one side shave first. We went ahead and shaved the right side first. She made an otherwise scary process SO much fun! I left feeling like a new person and loving the my new side shave. The next morning I woke up and just had to get the other side shaved. I texted her and she responded promptly saying she had a cancellation and to come on in. Her enthusiasm during the whole process was wonderful. She shaved the other side and I finally had the cut of my dreams! On to the shop itself.... it is so well maintained, clean, and cool as all hell. The style of the shop is rad! The products for sale were nicely priced and expansive without being overwhelming. It was ridiculously hot outside the day I came in and (in addition to being air-conditioned) they offered me a popsicle to cool down and some ice water. I briefly spoke to Brig and Carly during my visits, and they were both also super friendly. I reached out to Brig to help me get back to my natural color seeing as she had already done so in the article and I was impressed with the results. I got the worst haircut of my life here unfortunately. Went in for a trim and the cut all my hair off, I can't even put it up anymore (keep in mind my hair was almost to my waist straightened, now I cannot even put it up straightened) I am mortified to say the least lol. I feel bad writing this review because I think the hair stylist is a great stylist, they just did not listen to my request for some reason although they promised to even leave my split ends, that is how bad I wanted to keep the length. I went to the same salon whenever I came home to Cali but when my last haircut was done by a vapid 18 year old high school dropout who effed up my haircolor, I realized I had to make a switch. The location and place itself isn't glamorous, but that's Simi for you. I walked in and was greeted by the receptionist who was sooperdooper dripping sweet. She gave me a tour of the place and showed me the FREE beverages! I know some salons offer tea or wine, but it's nice to have a fridge stocked with sodas and water bottles. My stylist Carissa and I spent 10 minutes talking about what I wanted. Then purrrr the hair wash scalp massage was so soothing! Massages give me the heebeegeebees and goosebumps but this one turned me into a wet noodle. I used to be nonchalant about my hair but ever since I was given a mullet in my college years I'm prone to being tense in a hairstylist's chair. Carissa had me as serene as a frog on a lillypad. Intially I wanted blunt bangs but was afraid it'd make me look 5 years old. So first she cut in long sweepy bangs until I asked her to cut off more.. and a little more.. and finally, 'Eff it! Let's just get em done!'. She was totally chipper and didn't blink an eye when my hair ocd came out in full force. My hair is much lighter now and Carissa didn't even cut off a lot, just reshaped it. (There's a huge conspiracy against me. Everytime I ask for a certain amount to be cut off it ends up being 4 times that.) Finally a hairdresser who knows what I mean when I say 'I'm trying to grow it out'. I'm not sure if I'm feeling the layers in the back because they don't blend well, but other than that the haircut's great. $45 cut and complimentary bang trims along with free Bumble and Bumble samples! And the girls here are so sweet it'll give you diabetes and make you feel like a bad person for not smiling. read more

After finishing my contract with the Marine Corps and moving to SoCal, I decided I'd had enough of my regulation high-and-tight haircut and wanted to grow out my hair like all those keen hipsters I kept hearing about. Finding a new stylist after moving is always a traumatic experience for me because of all the potential for error, and I was doubly nervous because I was also vying for a new hairstyle and length. Play was a bit expensive for me coming from my excellent barber in Manhattan, but I was willing to absorb the costs if it meant I wouldn't end up in the parking lot crying at my dashboard. The salon itself is very chic, with very trendy designs, current fashion magazines and the always great Bumble & Bumble products. My mother, who in my youth styled hair to ensure food was on the table every night, always told me to judge a stylist by her own hairstyle. It needs to be trendy, because the stylist in question should be bored to death with the "standards" by the point in her career where she can't remember her cosmetology school schedule. My mom would be very pleased with the trendy cuts and colors I saw on the hairstylists at Play (and some of their patrons!) I am the eternal walk-in, and I lucked out with Brit, who happened to be available when I stumbled in. She directed me to the personal cup coffee machine in the back (a fresh cup each time and they stocked several flavors for me, which saved on my planned Starbucks return trip; that's like five dollars off already!) After drinking my coffee and browsing through an issue of the ever-nostalgic W magazine (are my youthful memories fucked up or what? Thanks, mom,) I sat down for my cut. The cut itself was $25, but men's cuts range from $25 to $35 depending on your stylist. Tip amply. Simi Valley isn't known for its scene, so it was odd to have gotten such a great cut and styling tips in the family values district of SoCal, but it worked for me. I've recommended Brit to a female friend of mine who also takes her daughter to Play, and she is a sworn convert. I've tried other salons in the area when I've needed a desperate cut and Brit was booked, and I've always left regretting not just scheduling with her like I should have and dealing with my unkempt hair until then. Take this from a man with very high standards ingrained in him from a young age, you will not be disappointed with Play Hair Lounge, even if your wallet is a little lighter by the end of it. But hey, it's a recession; if we can't treat ourselves to at least some of the finer things now and then, what's the point of living? I say no matter how much your portfolio's losing on the Street, there's no excuse for not looking like a million bucks. read more

I heart Brig and her bright yellow hair. I don't even live in Southern California anymore and I still have her cut my hair. Brig cuts my stacked a-line bob just how I want it. No one else ever listened when I said I wanted the angle more severe...finally my hair is just how I want it. Service here is friendly and laidback not a pretentious attitude anywhere. They are a Bumble and Bumble salon here and there is never a hard sell with any of the products they use on you, whether you inquire about it or not. There is also always cool art from local artists around the salon and my most recent visit had me coveting a couple of pieces that were done by Brig and her boyfriend...if I'm lucky the pieces will still be available. Love love love this salon. I go to Brit and she is so great. I have blonde hair and its very hard to get the perfect shade, but she does it every time. She also is able to match the roots perfectly, the highlights blend so well. She takes pride in her work and it shows in the results. She listens to what you want, that is so important in a stylist. As for the other stylists...every person I have seen leave the salon looks great. It is such a pleasant experience to go there. I cannot say enough how impressed I am by this salon! I saw a flyer for a fundraiser they were doing for Breast Cancer Research where they were offering to put in a streak of pink for just $15 with 100% going to the fundraiser. Sounded like fun, so I made an appointment. I called Kari and left a message. She called me back very quickly and we set it up. When I got to the shop the next day, I was greeted by Kari at the door, then another member of the staff gave me a full tour of the salon, it was beautifully laid out, they had a coffee bar, snacks, everything! Kari was super friendly and while I was sitting under one of the blowers waiting for the dye to set, another stylist came by just to thank me for coming in and participating in the fundraiser! It really made it feel like everyone was working together and they really cared about their clients! All I got was the streak of pink for $15, but Kari still gave me a gift bag full of samples of products to try in my hair at home! If that weren't enough, I got a handwritten thank you card from Kari a few days later! This is a level of customer service and professionalism that I never thought I'd see in my price range at a salon! This is the sort of client care I'd expect at a Beverly Hills salon for some unimaginable price! I usually only pay about $30 for a cut and was quoted $50 at P!ay, but frankly, with this kind of service, it is definitely worth it! I wish I could also comment on their work, but all I can say is that my hair is successfully pink in the strip she dyed! Aly is my stylist, and does wonders with pin-up do's, color, and various up-do's - including some of the most intricate braids I have ever seen. I've had strangers stop me and ask me where I have gotten my hair done - no joke. Aly has become my friend and always makes me feel glamorous and beautiful. Sam is my kids stylist - which is no simple feat. My 8 year old adores her and always feels like a big girl. My 5 year old will only hold still for Sam and always leaves with a smile. (I let the girls choose what they want themselves, though Sam will always look to me for a discreet nod of approval.) The Bumble and Bumble products are amazing. The right product can make anybody feel like a movie star and the talented staff and stylists will not only show you which product is best for you, but show you how to use it as well (key to any successful product usage).
