Finally returned after the new management took over. It doesn't have the same feeling because the seating was designed in the past to make you feel like you were dining on the streets of HK. Now, it feels more like a restaurant, which is still okay. The food, for the most part, remains consistent with what was offered before, along with some new additions to the menu. Depending on the time, the wait for a seat can be long. But in San Mateo, this is still my go-to place for HK-style dessert.

Fresh Almond Paste and Black Sesame Paste

Was looking for some dessert in downtown San Mateo after dinner on a weekend and came across Dessert Republic, a HK-style dessert shop. The ambience was super cute--almost like stepping onto a Hong Kong street. The walls are painted with storefront-style murals, a blue sky with clouds above, and big Chinese characters designed like signage. Very fun and thematic! Black Sesame Paste & Almond Paste -- they unfortunately didn't have the tai chi yin-yang version since they seem to only make it for special occasions now, but this combo was still delicious. Not too sweet, cool, slightly gelatinous, and super refreshing. Chinese desserts aren't meant to be bold or overpowering, and the pairing of black sesame & almond paste hit it out of the park Service was fast after we ordered our pudding to-go. They're also open pretty late--until 11pm on weekdays/Sundays and 1am on Fri/Sat--which is clutch for dessert cravings. I'll be back for their black sesame almond paste dessert! I've also heard good things about their Willow Dew (coconut & mango juice with tangerine & sago).

The lady who runs the shop was very nice and welcoming. The place has plenty of seating, making it great for large groups, while still maintaining an intimate atmosphere. There's a wide variety of choices, and my favorite was the pandan waffle.

Came in on a Sunday night and there were only 2 other groups of customers so we got seated immediately. First off, their ventilation system seemed off because there was a strong, greasy odor that lingered the entire 30+ mins we stayed. We ordered 2 items but had to get 1 to-go because we couldn't stand the odor any longer. The ginger sweet tofu I got was decent and waited almost 30 mins for this dessert given that it wasn't busy at all. It also came out to almost $10 after tax, which didn't feel justified given the portion size and overall quality. Had I known this is what Dessert Republic is about, I would have gone to Meet Fresh or Golden Island. At least for $10, I would get a good portion of real dessert. Very disappointing experience. Won't be returning.

So disappointed. Hadn't been here in a while so decided to drop by. New ownership maybe? There's a grand opening sign outside. Employees were nice but the person helping us didn't seem to know Cantonese (keep in mind this is a HK style cafe). I dismissed it because honestly it doesn't matter but I should've taken that as a sign. None of the foods were authentic and seemed to be made by someone who had never had the them before. Red bean drink came with regular ice, not crushed ice. Red bean soup came like it was blended to get it to paste form instead of boiling until beans opened. Sesame and almond soup came in layers, when traditionally it's in the yin yang sign. Eggettes was undercooked and came out half white. None of it was gross but why go somewhere inauthentic when there are plenty that are. Will not be coming back. Again so disappointed.... I think we were the only Chinese people there.

I didn't get pictures of the rest of the things we got but this place was great! The decor is so fun and the stuff was so sweet to me and my 1 yr old. The desserts and drinks were delicious and you could tell they made them to order. We will definitely be back!

Haven't been year since the new ownership, and will not come back. Prices are inflated (compared to other HK dessert places like Kowloon Tong and Golden Island). Everything was too sweet. The tofu in the red bean tofu was chunky and clumpy.

I was a more frequent customer over 20 years ago before dessert shops for more popular in the Bay Area. As a kid I was a sucker for the ice cream floats haha now as an adult. I enjoy their paste and sesame balls. Great service, great place to have gatherings and a quick bite. Overall a warm in family oriented place to have gatherings.

Came here on a Sunday night after dinner and place had a lot of sit-ins but we were still able to get a table for our group of 6 right away. Place had really nice murals of old hk. We ordered and the desserts were good but coulld be better. The Tai -Chi Sesame Paste came out first then the banana sundae then the Ginger Egg White & Milk Pudding and last the Willow Den. It's a cute date night spot and it seems like tthey do a lot of to-go orders.

This review is for September 2025. First time dining here and I was hoping that the food will be really good as it is in Hong Kong. Too bad it's not. I was very disappointed. SERVICE: The lady who was the server was nice. FOOD: - Black Sesame Paste $7.99 - 2/5 I've been craving Black Sesame Paste and I was too lazy to make it at home. Turns out that this one tastes almost like the one I could make at home. - Red Bean Paste $7.99 - 1/5 This barely have any red bean flavor. Not good. - HK Style Milk Tea $4.99 for hot - 3/5 If you want it cold, it's $5.69. The tea was good. They did not give us a full cup. Would not return.

I have been going here for the last ten years and it never ceases to disappoint. With crepes, traditional Chinese desserts, and food shaped like other food (they have a dish of "sashimi" made from fruit and tiramisu that looks like a potted plant), it is an amazing place to go. The servers there are all very friendly and will also help explain anything on the menu and all the ingredients. Besides the ceiling painted to resemble the sky and the decor of feeling like you are in China, each table has a placard with buttons that make it very easy to receive service. Not to mention, the food always arrives quickly. My favorite dish there is the Green Wonder, but they also have fantastic garlic noodles, and be sure to try their Tofu with Black Sesame or Tofu with Red Bean! EDIT: Went here recently and prices have become quite expensive. The staff are still extremely friendly and the quality of desserts is good. I understand why they need to raise prices to compete with other businesses, but it's a little sad to see how a 7.29 crepe now costs 12+ dollars.

My friend recommended me this place and it was a little underwhelming but I really enjoyed the spicy popcorn chicken. I wish the crepe was bigger for the price we paid for. However, the staff that was taking care of us, he was really sweet and I enjoyed the service and the vibes at the place

    Ginger Sweet Tofu

Always wanted to try this place - finally did and was not disappointed. Hong Kong style cafe with a rich selection of Chinese desserts. Unlike some Asian dessert chain, desserts are hot when it should be hot - not lukewarm. Will be back to try their other offerings!

I got an iced HK style coffee + milk tea which I've never had before but was so delicious. I'd definitely come back to try the other fruity drinks too! we ordered the tom yum noodles, preserved vegetables & pork noodle soup, salt & pepper fries, and the HK style french toast with peanut butter. the french toast was our favorite- it was fluffy and chewy and was just like the HK classic. the noodle dishes were both so hearty and flavorful too, and the portions were a good size. it did take a bit long for everything to come out, but it did seem like there was only one person working and she was very kind and accommodating when we had questions about our order. we didn't mind at all, especially sitting outside and enjoying the view! overall, I'll for sure be back for the drinks and to try some other HK style street food.

The location is right behind Foster City's Central lake and the weather was nice, so we decided to sit outside. We ordered the HK style milk tea, OG lemon tea, french fries, and the siu mai. If I just ordered the drinks, it might have been a better experience. The fries were okay, nothing special - they were a bit softer than I like. The siu mai was just bad. I'm not sure where it comes from, but it was gummy in texture and tasted like frozen food. There were only 5 small pieces and we still couldn't finish it. The drinks were priced fairly, but the snacks were overpriced for what it is. You order at a kiosk so there isn't much service to talk about, but we did have to ask for a ketchup a few times before they remembered to bring it to us. Maybe I'll go back to try the actual food dishes.

Cheesy, tender, egg fried rice was flavorful. Portion kinda small, as the dish was very shallow. Not a lot of rice. Kinda off tho when it was the first dish that arrived to the table and it was lukewarm. I find a baked dish is typically always last since it needs time to bake, and is served scalding hot imo. That's when you know it's done right. This wasn't that. Suss The baked pork chop with cheese and tomato sauce was so disappointing and super greasy/heavy. The meat was chewy and had an unpleasant flavor. The tomato sauce was not good either. The shrimp wonton noodle soup I sadly cannot recommend, the filling was not good. Had more pork than shrimp consistency. I did not enjoy the flavor. Not aromatic. I will say, the noodles were great quality. Thin, bouncy, correct texture. What you would hope for. The soup was not good. The roast duck was good, with tender meat and fatty skin. Flavorful with the plum sauce. The fish congee was good, though a bit too runny imo once cooled down. The fried donut (you tiao) was crunchy and very doughy. Would be nice if they could slice it. I can agree with everyone about their thoughts on the 18% mandatory tip fee, it's crazy lol. Mandatory service fee for hk service (which is minimal service). It was so hard to flag down the waiter for refilling water, or to get more napkins. The place was empty and they were on their phone the whole time. Waiting for that automatic tip. Whatever man.

My gauge is comparing it to Rooster and Rice (or What The Cluck) which is no longer available in the area. We did take out and ordered online. Even though it had been a while since our last visit, we always found the food to be pretty consistent and reliable. So, after seeing that Garden Kitchen had taken their place, we had to come here to see how this place compares! Looking around inside, it's hard to tell that anything about this place has changed. Their configuration is largely the same, offering plenty of tables inside, for groups large or small, and the menu, while different, is still pretty interesting. While not a HK cafe, it has a cafe sort of feel to it. Along with a slate of appetizers, they also have congee, noodle soups, chow fun/chow mein, fried rice, rice plates, noodle soups, and specialty entrees, including hainan chicken, which seems to be their most popular dish. In addition, they also have some Chinese BBQ options, like Char Siu and Roast Duck, but, tragically, we didn't see roast pork listed. -- ROAST DUCK (QUARTER) I was cautiously optimistic for this one and, thankfully, it turned out great. The pieces we got were rather meaty and the skin on this was really flavorful and neither too soft nor dried out. -- HOUSE SPECIAL HAINAN CHICKEN (QUARTER) Not as amazing as we had hoped for, but still pretty solid. The pieces we got were a bit lean and the skin wasn't the greatest, but the chicken itself was cooked well and I liked the peanuts that this came with. -- SALT & PEPPER FISH FILET Although this wasn't as good as others I've had, this wasn't bad. On the plus side, the batter was crispy, the fish was moist, and there was a fair amount of garlic and peppers. On the other, the inside of the batter was really gummy. -- THREE COMBO MEAT STIR-FRIED RICE NOODLES Sadly, I just wasn't a fan of this at all. Although this had a decent mix of stuff in it, the noodles themselves were torn apart, overcooked, and just kind of tasteless. Pass. -- BEEF CHOW FUN Pretty standard, but still pretty good! The noodles had a nice bite to them and, surprisingly, the slices of beef weren't as tough as I feared they would be. Plus, the dish wasn't very oily either. -- DRY FRIED STRING BEANS WITH MINCED MEAT Nothing special, but still pretty solid. The string beans were cooked well and they didn't skimp on the meat. However, I wish they had used some XO sauce in this to add a stronger punch of flavors. -- BEEF BRISKET & TURNIP RICE PLATE Along with the Roast Duck, this was my other favorite dish here. The brisket was super tender and I really liked how the sauce had a nice beefiness and richness to it. -- BRAISED FISH FILET WITH TOFU & BLACK MUSHROOMS This didn't look all that impressive, but it was actually pretty good. The tofu and mushrooms were both great, but, like the salt & pepper fish, the batter felt a little gummy. -- TOMATO BEEF PAN FRIED NOODLES I didn't eat much of this one, so I can't say much about it. However, based on what I had, this was fine. The noodles were crispy, the portion was decent, and the beef wasn't chewy. -- SOY SAUCE CHOW MEIN For better or worse, this was kind of generic. There wasn't anything about this that stood out, but at least the noodles weren't overcooked nor was it salty/heavy on soy sauce. -- POTSTICKERS Ehh...this was fine. The filling wasn't too shabby and I liked how soft the skins were. However, I wish these had a harder and deeper crust on the bottom to give it that crunch. -- PORK & SHRIMP WONTON NOODLE SOUP Honestly, this had the potential to be so much better. Despite how this came with a fair amount of wontons that were all pretty plump, the broth was surprisingly bland and diluted. Beyond the food, service here is unremarkable, but not necessarily in a negative sense. Rather, there's nothing amazing about it, but all of the workers are still friendly enough and efficient while the kitchen gets orders out relatively quick, which is all you can really ask for. All in all, while a couple of our dishes were definitely pretty tasty, just as many underwhelmed while the rest were just okay. Combine that with how there usually isn't a line and how parking is super easy (they have a small lot, too) and Garden Kitchen is still a terrific option for a quick and convenient meal. Though, one that isn't quite as tasty as Fat Wong's used to be. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.
