Made a call in order and arrived with order ready for pick up. Tried the Pambazo and wow it was delicious! Filled with potatoes mixed with chorizo and creamy with the sour cream and cheese. The lettuce gives it some freshness as this is a heavy torta. Then tried the tosti esquite and it was also delicious! It also has cut up cucumber in there which was unexpected but added some freshness to it as well. I just wish there was more added sour cream to the corn dish but other than 10/10! This place is bombbbb! I thought this place only sold desserts and fruit smoothies but they sell savory food too. I was blown away by the super cubana torta! It was so big but there was so much meat, flavor and texture!!! The bread was also soft and delicious, definitely recommend it!!! There are a lot of seatings here but a lot of people get the food to go. Overall, I love the torta so much and the staff here is so nice and helpful. My favorite thing about Snacks is the fact that they have a mini mangoneada! It's the perfect size for one person and it always hits the spot. The bottom has a sweet icy mango slush with a good amount of chamoy. It is topped with fresh cut mangoes, more chamoy, tajin, and of course a tamarind stick. So good on a warm day in the Bay! Ok hear me out.... I know this place is called Snacks, but DO NOT SLEEP ON THE FOOD. I originally came here looking for paletas for my daughter who has an allergy to dairy and nuts. Normally ice cream is a no-go for her but I'm thankful they had a few flavor paletas (means little stick/ popsicle) that had no major allergens. I haven't had a flavor that I didn't like. I've had Snacks bookmarked for 7 years! They used to have the counter seats with the big bikini booties but I guess they've remodeled to keep up with the changing times. It was a very hot day and we tried the mango smoothie and mangolado -- total $19.92 Snacks is a very authentic Mexican place at the northern end of downtown San Mateo. Everyone speaks Spanish here and I had to google a lot of the menu items to understand what it was. They were very nice here though and offered to help us decipher after we stood there in front of the menu for 10 minutes -- hahaa The drinks tasted very heavy and maybe not something we're used to. This is a very nice Mexican food and ice cream joint. There is free parking on the street out front of the place and there is also a parking lot across the street. They have some delicious food, ice cream and fruit based treats on their menu. The menu is full. They have an ice cream freezer full of traditional flavors and a small freezer with homemade ice pops. I decided to go with the Bionico and Shuco Guatemaltico. They were both delicious. The Shuco Guatemaltico was a hot dog, covered with cheese, fries, and many different sauces and spices. I was huge and very flavorful. I was very impressed. I could not finish it and had to save the leftovers for later. The Bionico was made with fresh fruit and was equally good. I put that away in no time. The staff is friendly and my only gripe is that the place was not very clean. The floor was a mess and the kitchen area was not up to standards either. The mangoneada from Snacks has got to be one of the most bizarre-tasting things I've ever tried. My first impression was "wow this is salty" followed by "wait, it's actually quite sour" followed by "it's kind of spicy too"! That's because this Mexican dessert is a bizarre mix of diced mangoes with scoops of icey mango sorbet (sounds tame so far..), but the fruit is then seasoned with chamoy, a strong-tasting condiment made of dried fruit and ground chile! When I got this dessert, the mango was quite crunchy and flavorless (probably not in season), but the exact thing the dish could've used was a hit of sweet flavor to balance out the other strong components! The cup of fruit was topped off with a tamarind straw, basically a straw coated with a sweet, chewy, candy-like paste made of tamarind! All this being said, Snacks was a really cool, quirky cafe with a bunch of different unique Mexican antojitos, including desserts, savory snacks, and tortas. A large pineapple is dug out and the interior is filled with chunks of fruits and juice. Slices of cucumber and pineapple rings are coated with chili pepper, and protrude from the top of the pineapple. The juice was pretty hard to slurp up with the straws since chunks of fruit kept getting in the way. Overall, I really enjoyed the freshness of the fruits and the unique flavor that the chili pepper brought to the sweet dessert. The whole ensemble was too big for the two of us to finish! What a deceptively generic name for a genuinely unique experience to satisfy your sweet tooth. While San Mateo has its share of Asian-style sweets (Eggettes, anyone?). the Mexican dessert category is sadly underrepresented not only here but in the Bay Area as a whole, Sure, you can get a mangonada in the Mission or in Fruitvale in Oakland, but can you get a bionico or fresas con crema anywhere? I don't think so. I just came upon this shop quite by accident on the decidedly Latin block of B Street after a disappointing meal at Fusion Peruvian Grill a couple of doors down (review: http://bit.ly/2lWLZSR). It's a family-run spot and looks on the surface like a typical froyo shop, and yes, they serve ice cream. But look at the menu and you see Jugos Frescos (fresh juices), Licuados de Fruta (fruit smoothies), Licuados de Leche (milk shakes), and even Aguas Frescas de Temporada (seasonal fresh fruit waters). What drew my eye were the Fruta Picada choices or the fresh-cut fruit. I like mangonadas, but I was watching an episode of "Pati's Mexican Table" on PBS where she rhapsodized in that distinctly squeaky voice of hers about the joys of Mexican gaspacho, a tantalizing fruit cocktail from Morelia. There's no gaspacho here... But they do serve the Guadalajara-originated Bionico for $5.50 and I went for it. The mix reminded me of ambrosia as it's a fruit salad with plenty of chopped fruit - apples, papaya, cantaloupe, bananas, jicama - all of it covered in crema and topped with granola, shredded coconut, raisins and honey (photo: http://bit.ly/2mW9rUW). There were two different sized cones - the standard small one that ice cream places usually don't charge for and the large waffle cone. The designer must of had Amber Rose in mind when making those bootylicious chairs. There was no A/C so we sat at a table near the doorway to catch some breeze. Yes, I know, we're hot weather pansies. The Melonada is just like a mangonada (w/ mango slush, chamoy) but with cantaloupe ($5.50). It was super refreshing with a vibrant sweetness from the ripen cantaloupe and icy mango slush. They were easy on the chamoy (pickled fruit) so you got a nice sweet, sour, spicy and tangy taste but it wasn't overkill. Really hits the spot on a hot day. I love all types of offal and weird food concoctions so I was excited to try the Tostilocos, a popular Mexican street food ($5.50). It's made and served from a bag of tortilla chips that's topped with pickled pork skin, cucumber, jicama, chamoy, lime juice, Japanese peanuts.
