Normally I get a sheet cake, but they didn't have any, so they told me they were giving me a 7 inch round When I picked it up, it was in a sealed box, so I didn't discover until I got home that the cake had a hard chocolate coating rather than just the plain buttercream frosting I had expected. When I called the store simply to understand what had happened, the woman I spoke with was argumentative and dismissive. She repeatedly told me that that cake "always comes that way" and that I "should have known." I explained that I had never received it that way before and had every reason to believe I was ordering the same traditional cake with buttercream frosting that I had purchased previously since that's what I had asked for in my phone conversation to order the cake. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of courtesy. I wasn't asking for a refund or anything for free--I simply wanted to understand why I had received something different from what I thought I had ordered. A simple, "I'm sorry there was a misunderstanding," would have been more than sufficient. Instead, what should have been a very simple conversation became unnecessarily unpleasant. The cake was disappointing, but the customer service was far worse.

As soon as I got it, I went and sat at a table and I could tell the bread was not fresh. It was very hard. I immediately went back up and asked if the bread was made today? And she said, "no, She gave me day old bread." Which I did pay full price for. I asked if I could have a fresh loaf because the one they had given me was very hard. She said, "no, if I want fresh I have to ask for fresh." I couldn't believe I was told that., Then I talked to the manager. He said the same thing, "you have to ask if you want fresh bread" I honestly couldn't believe they told a customer that. Will I be back? "Yes", but very disappointed in the reply. And now I know to always ask for fresh bread to me that was very bad business.

We arrived mid-late afternoon and the restaurant was not busy but by the time our food arrived, Village Baker was pretty busy. The menu is huge but the blackened grouper sandwich was what my wife and I both chose. I was surprised how good it was because every February almost my entire diet is fresh grouper or mahi mahi. The dish here was definitely a worthy contender. Our friends ordered a Rueben and the Baker's Wife Pizza. Everything look so good. Since there were many items I'd like to try, we definitely need to come back. Service-Excellent. On our way our, we stopped at the attached bakery. Lots of really great looking baked items including scones, lemon bars, macaroons, tarts, cinnamon rolls, etc. So glad we discovered Village Baker.

Cons: -Out of many items. -Prices are now more expensive than Walmart on all but sale items. -Too many sale items require quantity purchase to get the sale price.

They aren't nearly as big as Meijer's and perhaps don't carry 9 choices of beans, but I find their selection to be good and I've started buying their store brand "Our Family" and cannot tell the difference. They have a small deli and serve a lunch meal choice Mon- Fri. If I had a negative- it would be that their prices are a little higher but a small price to pay for cleanliness, helpfulness and just down home friendliness that you certainly don't find anywhere else ( if you can find anyone at all!) If you haven't shopped there you are missing out on a zen shopping experience that in this day's troubled world is worth it's weight in gold. It was served with roasted small golden potatoes and salad topped with picked onions. For dessert, we split their delicious carrot cake. It's evident that all food is scratch made. Cake had crushed pineapple and no nuts (important for those who are sensitive). Hope to return when we are back in the Saugatauk area later this summer.

They have a wide selection of cocktails and a unique Chartreuse offering. We had a feature goat cheese and mushroom dip, a petite Caesar salad, a pork tenderloin, and beef brisket bourguignon. The dip was very cheesy and had no visible mushroom (or mushroom flavor for that matter), so was essentially a goat/parm/cream cheese dip with caramelized onions. Both of our mains were poorly cooked. The pork tenderloin was overdone, dry, with an undetectable coffee crust. The blueberry BBQ sauce was all blueberry. The beef brisket was tough and once you swallowed the sauce that it was slathered in was incredibly dry. The veggies it was served with were undercooked and included the chewy stems of mushrooms (also undercooked). Despite all of this, it is a cute spot and service is kind but they are understaffed.
