This is my favorite restaurant in Spring Lake. The pretzels are amazing. Hands down delicious. On one side there is a charming bakery with all sorts of delectable selections. On the other side, there is a restaurant, bar, and charming little giftshop. We stopped in for brunch. It was so good as always. The service was ok. Our server was great, but not sure what was happening at the host stand. Despite being on the wait list, they skipped us a few times before my partner said something. Not sure what was happening there as we said "First Available." Overall, high rating as we have been here a bunch of times, and I love the food, but not sure what was up with the host stand. BTW. Check out the women's bathroom if you get a chance. I love the laminated readers of amazing women. So cool! I love that the menu has photos of all the food. So helpful. read more

Our favorite breakfast spot in spring lake/grand haven. The breakfast pizza is unreal. Here's usually a wait on the weekends but it's worth the wait. You can call ahead and get on the list as well or make a reservation. The chocolate scones from the bakery are SO DELICIOUS as well. There's sooo many chocolate chips in every bite. Well, it's kind of a mixed review. We went over Christmas time and ordered a bunch of things from the bakery, as well as went to breakfast there when we picked up our stuff. First for the bakery: the decorated Christmas cookies were amazing. The icing was perfect. They were beautiful. The cookies themselves were good but the gingerbread was definitely the best! Sourdough bread was soft and delicious, but the jalapeño cheddar bread had virtually no jalapeños or cheese in it. The cinnamon rolls we ordered were baked a little too long and were kind of dry and the frosting was grainy and not smooth and creamy. Don't get me wrong, they did taste good but we're kind of a disappointment compared to other items. Scones were amazing! As for breakfast, everybody in my party ordered eggs Benedict. For two of the three of us the eggs were cooked hard and the potatoes were cold even though we ordered them over easy/medium..., the ham and hollandaise were delicious but a runny egg is a must with eggs Benedict. I love the coziness and quaint atmosphere of Village Baker. It is a small restaurant, but worth the wait. We arrived on a Saturday at 5pm and there was no wait. Our server greeted us shortly after sitting down and grabbed our drinks. We also had a couple of pretzels. We started with spinach and artichoke dip. This is my all time favorite spin dip. The buttery homemade bread dippers are what makes this phenomenal. My husband and I both had mules and they were delicious. I had a pizza and my husband the spaetzle. Both great dishes! Solid brekkie spot that's popular among locals and visitors. Service was prompt, regular, and friendly. I ordered the cinnamon roll French toast. Looked amazing, but tasted mainly like a cinnamon roll that had simply been covered in bananas and syrup. I couldn't figure out what was "French toast-y" about it. Maybe a (longer) soak in the egg batter? Buttermilk pancakes here aren't light and fluffy; they're thinner, more crepe-like and are wet in the middle--but that is how some folks like 'em. Crab meat omelet had lots of real jumbo lump crab (yum!). Sides like bacon and hashbrowns are unremarkable but they did the job. All that said, if you ask me, the adjoining bakery is the real star. Actually, it deserves its own five-stars. A German pal of mine said Village Baker's pretzels are the closest you can get to actually being in Germany--that's high praise! I have always had the soft pretzels from the Village Baker but I've never actually dined at their restaurant. I had high expectations because it is such a staple to the Spring Lake and surrounding community. When we arrived, we were standing at the hostess stand for about 8-10 minutes with workers walking by and no one greeting us or saying someone would be with us. There were empty tables and no other people waiting. It is so important for businesses to give a positive first impression and unfortunately they missed the mark. I finally waited for someone to come by again and I said we were ready to be seated. The hostess had a negative look on her face and was not personable at all. The face of your business is the hostess. We then got seated. The space is comfortable, some of the tables are pretty close together. Our waitress was fine overall. Unfortunately what really put a damper on the visit was when my eggs Benedict came out, the egg was off the English muffin. But they still served it to me like that. See photo. To me that tells me they would rather serve that than quickly redoing the one egg for proper plating for a customer. Dining out is an experience and the plating is part of that experience. I was so bummed because I am a food blogger and this was not photo worthy to share with my followers. As a business, your reputation comes out of that window on every plate. The waitress brought our food and said "oh yeah the egg slipped off but it'll still taste good." And handed me my food. To me that was tacky. It also wasn't great because when I tried to lift the egg on top of the English muffin, the yolk broke and went all over my hash browns. I don't like my food touching so it was slightly frustrating. There are several reasons why plating is so important, and the Village Baker definitely missed the mark. The presentation was not what I expected from such a recommended establishment. People also dine with their eyes and this was not appealing. I read reviews on here after my visit and it seems that there have been previous plating issues mentioned but it's sad that no action has been taken. The eggs Benedict was not my favorite and I would not order it again. The hollandaise sauce did not have flavor. The iced coffee was good. Nothing is giving me the urge to visit again. I wish them success in the future but with success they need to accept constructive criticism and fix the things that reviewers are saying. read more

Came here my kids and some friends after blueberry picking. What a gem! Sat outside and one of there many salads and pizza! So delicious. Their pizza was one of the best thin crust pizzas I've had in along time, and they have a lot of different inventive options. The crust is really think and crisp. Saturdays and Sundays the place serves breakfast till 2:30, but we were told by server the kitchen was over done with breakfast (at 2pm on Saturdays). We had 4 kids ordering the Bavarian pretzels which they all devoured with a side. We sat outside in their small patio which was nice. Definitely want to come here again for more pizza and to try one of their other salads. Israeli couscous was an ingredient in a couple salad options! After lunch we headed to the bakery to check it out. At that late afternoon time, muffins and scones were 1/2 off. Order an apricot and blueberry scone, lemon poppyseed muffin, a couple cookies, macaroon, and some mini cannolis. All were delicious! read more

We had quite a bit of a wait and there wasn't a great place to hang around that wasn't in the way of staff and other diners. I ordered takeout from this restaurant over a month ago and they screwed up my order. I didn't know until I got home. They offered to remake them, but it is a major hassle to get to their restaurant thanks to the horrible parking lot. I paid for cheeseburgers and got charged for each slice of cheese but didn't get cheese on two of the three burgers. The owner responded to my Google review and promised gift cards if I wanted them. He provided me with their email address. I reached out not once but twice and never heard a thing. Not a peep. If someone offers me something, I expect them to follow through. That is the biggest reason I won't go back. Complete lack of follow-through on their part. I couldn't get a refund for my meals because they were bought using a gift card, so that was frustrating. I only went there because a relative keeps giving me gift cards for the restaurant. I hope I don't get any for Christmas this year! read more

The Village Baker is one of those go to places. We were staying at the marina in grand Haven and discover this place early on. Because we had our car it was an easy drive over to Spring Lake. I could rant and rave about all the good things on the food. Anybody that's been there knows how good it is. They have a very menu they will accommodate everybody's needs. The staff has always been outstanding we have never had a bad experience. They even have a bar in the restaurant. One time I even bellied up to the bar instead of sitting at one of their nice tables. Anyone that knows me knows I like sitting at the bars. I think there's a term for that called barflies. Just kidding I got a chuckle out of my wife though. And oh by the way I brought my wife to the bar one time. If you decide to check this out to stop at the front of the store and check the counter out. They have the most awesome cookie selection. This is a great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It's got a quirky hometown vibe with a small store full of cute items you definitely don't need. They have a bakery on one side that is full of treats and the other side of the building is a sit down restaurant that serves breakfast until 11 and then has a great lunch and dinner menu filled with salads, sandwiches, pizzas and some other classic dinner options. The service is friendly and fast. While this isn't a fancy place I think it does a great job serving quality food! read more

We stopped by twice while visiting - once for coffee and pastries and second for dinner. The morning staff could've been a little more welcoming, but the general manager was very sweet. We ordered a loaf of the San Francisco sourdough, apricot scone, cranberry orange muffin, and a cinnamon roll. Out of all those items, the cranberry orange muffin and sourdough bread was the best. The other two were a little underwhelming. I ordered a dirty chai latte, but it just tasted like a regular latte. We ordered it all to-go, otherwise I would've brought it up to their attention. Maybe they made it wrong? For dinner, we ordered the Mushroom Spaetzle, Beef Spaetzle, and crab cakes. The mushroom was much better than the beef, the meatballs were SO flavorful! If you base the restaurant's ratings off the first interaction then this would be a negative 5. I walked into the restaurant and saw a line and I added my name to the list. I saw an opening at the bar and when I asked the young man if seats were available, he abruptly said it was the hostess to seat people. He loudly called to the older hostess, "hey hostess- door, door" . Although she was cleaning the open tables to seat more patrons, he was extremely rude and arrogant. The hostess asked if I wanted seat at the bar and I told her, if someone treated me as disrespectful as he just did, I would not want to be near him. She was very appreciative and I hope she is able to overlook his hateful comments to her because I cannot. The rest of the meal was good, the ham and cheese omelette was good as it can be for a simple item and the strawberry cheesecake pancake was very good. I did get Sour dough toast with mango jam and it was ok as well. They did not offer a military discount which is typical nowadays since many places have gone away from recognition of the military service. The food was good, I bought the roasted garlic and chicken. When I ordered, the waitress asked if I wanted ranch with it, which I thought odd, so I asked if it was good with ranch and would she recommend it. She shared she loved the ranch, it was homemade, and she'd recommend it with the pizza, so I said sure. What she didn't share was I was going to be charged for it, and when I asked about it she only stated if she didn't charge me, the kitchen wouldn't have added it. I told her if I knew I was going to be charged, I would've said no when she asked. She wasn't apologic, didn't offer to remove the charge, and was flippent about her untactful selling technique. This is a mixed review - the Village Baker usually does a good job of- their pizza and brunches are great. However, last Thanksgiving I thought we'd take a break and order from Village Baker. It was terrible! The turkey was from a can, the gravy too salty and everything else was so bad, we just threw it away and had some leftovers.
