The food at Detour is consistently delicious, served quickly, and the portion sizes are just right. I have been to this restaurant many times over the last year and a half and have seen it change into a wildly successful, busy place to eat/drink. Every now and then they make tiny errors which, though they do not totally mar the experience for me, do get under my skin from time to time. Twice I have been to the restaurant, ordered my coffee, and then have been asked whether I wanted milk or cream. When I reply cream, they always bring me milk. When this happens, I always pour it in my coffee without really looking at it (because I assume I've been brought cream). I will still drink coffee with milk in it because I don't mind it, but it is little things like this that bother me when I'm already spending $2-3 for a cup of coffee and it isn't the way I ordered it. Secondly, sometimes they forget to bring you cutlery or have it ready for you. This creates an awkward situation - should I just grab it from the cutlery station in plain view of them or wait and ask my server? I'm giving Detour 4 stars because they have the very best coffee outside of Toronto. The food is amazing and always has been. The servers are always friendly, though very busy at times. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone passing through Dundas but I do hope that, over time, they strive to improve. read more

Wow Coffee. They do it right. I wanted to bathe in it! Order something with their "Punch Buggy" espresso blend and you will be in heaven, Starbucks who?? The best thing is you can buy a pound to take home! Ok- now the food. Everything was delish. The Detour Hash Is amazing on the breakfast menu...they mix sweet potatoes and regular potatoes ( is that a kind?) with spinach, smoked meat and poached eggs...I loved every bite. My hubby had the smoked meat sandwich with saurkraut and russian dressing...he ate the whole thing...but did have to cut off a few hunks of fat...besides that everything was divine. They were super busy and could use more staff- but since we had read the reviews we expected to wait. Our server was a gem- speedy and friendly. Wish this were in my neighborhood- we would be regulars for sure. read more

I used to love this place, visiting a handful of times over the last couple of years. After renovation the quality of the food does not seem to be the same as before, and prices went up. Avocado Toast used to be so delicious, with pickled onions, poached eggs, cocktail tomatoes, cilantro. Now all that is gone, just plain avocado and fried egg (+a relatively plain salad), but price is $3 more than before! My wife was pretty happy with her kale salad, but the portion was on the small side. Not sure when I'll be back... I even preferred the old cafe layout, which felt more comfortable/homey. read more

Detour is a lovely cafe, it's a cozy spot located centrally in Dundas. It can get quite busy at times which makes it a little squishy but nonetheless my experiences here have been great. The only reason I am giving this place a 4 or of 5 star is because the pricing feels unreasonable, to my knowledge their ingredients are no organic so that can't justify the price. Toast with avocado is close to $12, and a small cappuccino is around $5. All the food is great! But these aren't massive portions, they're average but the prices are not. I just come here as a treat every once in a while, but it seems as though prices just continue to increase unjustifiably. The wait staff is also below average, on multiple occasions the waitress was a little sarcastic in an unnecessary way, they could be more approachable. read more

I went here last week with my parents and my boyfriend, and 3/4 of us were a fan. My boyfriend loves his coffee and knows a fair bit about it, and when he ordered the pour-over, he wasn't a fan. He didn't find it flavorful enough and had definitely had better. I had a latte (which came with latte art!) and an oatmeal raisin cookie. Both *really* good. My only qualm would be the cup came with no handle and while they only steam the milk to 140degrees, it was still pretty hot to hold in the beginning. My parents had an iced latte and an iced american as they were out of the iced coffee they originally wanted. As far as iced drinks go, they were pretty good. The service was friendly in a way that didn't feel forced, which was nice. The atmosphere was welcoming and cozy and the back patio (where we sat) is great with the umbrellas and the nice breeze that rolls through. read more

This place is amazing, straight through. First, and most importantly, the coffee: I got an Americano, light on the water, and it was a gorgeous deep flavor without any sour or acidity. (Note that I am well aware that a perfect roast is subjective, but this is how I like it.) My only wee complaint might be that it's not very complex, but for a flavor this straightforward and accessible, I don't think they could have done better. A side note here: so I grabbed a pound of coffee to go, getting their darkest roast. Again, it's not terribly complex, no spice at all, but just a very pleasant deep flavor. Flat, perhaps, but not necessarily in a bad way. (I will say here that something disappointing happens to the flavor when the coffee goes tepid, though. But hey, it just encourages me to drink it while it's still hot.) Anyway, the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful, and the ambiance and interior were quite nice--I'm rather jealous I don't have this place a wee bit closer to me, if not down the road to work at. read more

I have been getting my beans from here for years, ever since they opened. They have good variety and their coffees beverages are great! But this review is prompt by my early morning impulse visit. Goat cheese and bacon scones, still warm from the oven with a beautiful cup of flat white, chilling in their patio space, listening to the morning bustle is the best. quaint little cafe in the heart of dundas. i've wanted to check this place out for a while, mainly because they roast their own coffee beans. idk how to describe the decor, there's like a certain word i'm looking for but idk what it is. it's kinda old-school, but cozy. idk. and they have a really pretty awning out front this is the first coffee-centric cafe i've been to that has waitstaff service. pretty cool. plus, our waitress was super patient with taking our order, answering all the questions i had about their coffee. i ordered their "cruz"/"cruise" (didn't ask for the spelling) coffee in espresso form. an excellent dark-ish roast, and one of the best coffees i've had in a while. our party also ordered the sweet-n-salty cookie or whatever, as well as the chocolate chip cookie, and both were delicious. this is THE hip cafe you want to go to if you're west of hamilton. highly recommended :) read more

I was there with my 9 year old daughter a few weeks ago. We had breakfast sandwich and weekenders brunch. Here is my assessment of this place: - Coffee: very good, but no refill. Considering the above average price of of the coffee and the food, there has to be a free refill. - Food quality was good but not excellent. I asked about ingredients and based in the answer and my own tasting, they use good ingredients ( not organic). I felt the price was way too high. The portions were on the low side. I paid about $30 for breakfast sandwich and weekender brunch and a coffee. For being a small town, the prices are higher than some fancy places in Toronto. Took the waiter a long while after we took a seat to greet us and bring us some water. When I checked off the type of ambiance Detour Cafe is, I realized how versatile it really is. During the day, it is a hipster/casual cafe that serves THE BEST espresso in town (Hamilton (GHA). I say this most sincerely, as not only have i worked in a fair number of cafes, and am learning how to make espresso at home, I have also visited and tried a lot of espresso in the Hamilton area. By night (Thurs-Sat) Detour turns into this classy/romantic restaurant. It still serves its amazing espresso, but it also offers a great dinner menu. I'm not really one for choice, usually I feel overwhelmed when I have too much choice. However, when it comes to good espresso beans, I am underwhelmed; there's never enough/good choice. Detour's got me covered on both fronts. They roast and sell their own beans, either in bulk or in your daily latte. It's really one of those places you have to experience, especially if you're a coffee/espresso drinker. I will definitely be back and will bring more people to discover the gem that lays in the heart of Dundas. read more

We used to love Detour however our last two visits (post renovation) have not been as great. Sandwiches and portion size seem to be smaller than in the past, with prices not reflecting this change. We sort of get the impression that management is struggling with the take away/tableside ordering/service. You have to tell them when you order if you want to stay but then people who are waiting for friends will come in and grab the last table, wait for the friend before they order as a group. Everything just doesn't seem as smooth as it once was. We totally understand that it takes time to iron out the wrinkles but it's been several months now. In addition, the space where you add milk/sugar to coffee is in front of the area people wait for their barista drinks which is also in the pathway to the washrooms. On my most recent visit there were 7 people in an area that could not be more than 3 feet wide. I really hope Detour finds their legs again but I worry that things will get worse into the busy spring/summer tourist season. read more

Mike and I stopped in at Detour Cafe today for delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and two beautifully prepared cortados. Seriously...everything was done to perfection. The barista's work was flawless. The servers were both friendly and helpful. Stephanie, the manager, made us feel really welcome. Couldn't be happier. read more

Detour Cafe serves some of the most incredible coffee I've had so far in Hamilton. It's smooth and rich, served black. The muffin called "morning glory" is delicious. It's kind of like "carrot cake" but in muffin form, with crumbles on the top, and pairs nicely with the coffee. It's a busy place, so I wouldn't make it a place to go and do any reading (or any type of work) while I had my coffee; however, there's a cozy seat against the window that looks out into the street, that could be good for a bit of seclusion to have a cup of joe and read the daily paper. Found Detour Cafe thru Yelp looking for a place to brunch. Was a welcome surprise. Eggs Benny were done perfectly; Flat White coffee good. Service was attentive and quick. Excellent coffee, with outstanding beans. Easily one of best Cafés in greater Hamilton (other is Cafe Oranje in Hamilton proper). Staff are friendly and helpful. The food is quite delicious and have fresh ingredients. The desserts are delicious. The lack of Wifi is a touch annoying. I should say they have WiFi, but do not allow the public/customers to access it. I asked about this and they replied "customers would stay too long" and "may interfere with lunch/dinner service". Fair enough--but if they can find an innovative way around this (charge after 1 hour) - my review would easily be 5 stars. Would be a great coffee shop, but this is a touch disappointing. Had a half size winter squash soup ($3.50) and a half size Detour 2-cheese grilled cheese ($ 5.25): Italian Romanella meets French-style brie - heaven on multigrain, served with homemade tomato chilli jam; and a London Fog ($3.24) for sipping.
