Detour is a hidden gem in the Clarendon area. A great place to meet up with friends or even to do work with your laptop. Free and efficient WIFI and amazing service is a plus. Delicious espresso drinks and they happy hour options as well. I recommend any of the Breakfast items and their new Levant Toast - light, fresh, and flavorful! Something that I love about NoVA are the amount of coffee shops there are in every city. I ran into this place through Yelp and my boyfriend I decided to try this place out. What a way to take a detour to this coffee shop in Arlington! (I wonder how many times Detour was used in these reviews) We arrived at a time when there were plenty of seats to choose from. I also give coffee points because this coffee shop has outlets along the walls for at least each table. Detour Coffee is also roomy for people to do their work as well. We both ordered lattes ($4.00) with flavored syrup ($0.50). We also ordered cookies because that's definitely needed with our latte! We did see the food menu but we had lunch before arriving to the coffee shop. That'll be something on our list to try when we visit here again! Came across this cafe while looking for somewhere to do work, drink coffee, and eat at the same time. I used the check in offer for free drip coffee which was very strong and tasty I will probably be up all night! They had plenty of seats including booths as well. I came here for a coffee date with one of my old co-workers and she chose this place on a Monday this past week during the holiday of Martin Luther King. I got here when they first open, so I said she had to place all to myself. It gave me a chance to check it out and its entirety. I loved the decor inside because it was rustic and I love the wood throughout. I also enjoyed the cups hanging from the ceiling and creating its own masterpiece of cups. on the way to the restroom, you'll also notice some cups along the wall which was also a cool display. I grabbed a cup of coffee before my friend got there and parked myself at one of the table booths. On the wall was a painting of the monument and it was pretty cool. What I liked about the booth was that it had a plug that was right there and very visible. I plugged in my laptop and my phone and started to work. Eventually, my friend came and she ordered bagels and lox with potatoes. She said it was delicious and I got to try the potatoes. They were pretty good. She also got a mocha which was in this nice huge cup and she finished that off quickly. The place serves breakfast and lunch items. Near the register, they have pies that you can order as well as some delicious-looking cookies. Also in this place, you can get some alcoholic beverages as they are displayed in the refrigerated section. Overall, a cool spot to do some work and maybe have a nice little breakfast. The parking lot has a few spots where you can park your car, but if you can't find parking just go along the side streets and park in the metered spots. I'm not sure if I'll make my way to this area again, but if I do I wouldn't mind stopping by and hanging out while doing some work on my laptop. read more

Wow this place is absolutely amazing!! My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday morning for brunch together and we ordered the pancakes, steak and eggs, and a mimosa. The steak and eggs.. were... the most amazing steak and eggs I've had for brunch! I wasn't really sure what to expect because a lot of places are overpriced for a very mediocre steak. This was cooked to perfection and well worth the price. It came with eggs (obviously), potatoes, toast, and chimichurri sauce. The sauce paired with the steak was what really made the whole entree absolutely delicious! The pancakes were fantastic as well. They make their pancakes with a ricotta filling and normally I am super picky with stuffed pancakes because it can get really overwhelming/be too sweet, but these were so perfect!! It was different than other pancakes we've had and the perfect ending to our meal. My boyfriend loved these pancakes and so did I. The ricotta added the perfect slightly creamy touch to traditional pancakes. I got my pancakes plain this time, but next time I want to order blueberries in the actual pancakes. I think that would make them even better than they already are. The mimosa was really perfectly balanced and the orange juice that they used was fresh squeezed and you can definitely tell in the taste of it. This is a spot I would definitely return to. The food is served on hip wooden cutting boards, and the "U Street" chicken sandwich the host recommended me was delicious. The chicken was juicy and the mumbo sauce was divine! (It is messy/drippy though). The potatoes could have used some crisping. You get a free drip coffee if you check in. One note that needs urgent attention is that the women's bathroom NEEDS an air freshener and a good airing out. The restroom appearance isn't dirty/bad, but the SMELL was repulsing. I almost vomited. It was dingy and musty-feeling, and the smell... my, I felt transported to the middle of a public restroom in DTLA. I came in about a week ago, but am just now getting around to my review. I came in with about a half a dozen of my friends' snack we all tried something different from the brunch menu. Some of the things we ordered were, but were not limited to: Maryland Chicken with bacon wrapped plantains, steak, and eggs, sticky bun French Toast, watermelon salad, the Norwegian, eggs benedict and avocado toast. For drinks, we got mimosas, sangria, Gaviota, and kill bill tea. Not only was everything extremely good, but the presentations are also amazing. The restaurant itself is clean, well taken care and has a wonderful aesthetic. The service was just as good as the food. I was in the area and super hungry this past Saturday morning so a quick search of breakfast spots in the area pointed me to Detour Coffee. I should've just taken a detour! Located between Darna and Jiffy Lube, their free parking is tight and offers very few spots. The inside of the coffee shop is decorated quite nicely and offers plenty of seating. They also serve Vigilante Coffee, but that's the heat as they get. I ordered a mocha and Norwegian toast (cream cheese, dill, smoked salmon). I got my mocha within a minute or two and while it came with pretty art, it just tasted off - maybe too milky but not chocolate-y enough. While waiting for my food, I was on the phone with my friend and didn't even notice how 20 minutes have gone by without me getting my food. I told one of the employees that I've been waiting for my food over 20 minutes and he promised he'd check in the kitchen. Another 10 minutes go by and three GROUPS of people that ordered after me receive their food, while there's no sign of my toast, nor any update from the employee that was supposed to check on what was the issue. At this point I'm very HANGRY so I went back to the register and asked for a refund. Detour Coffee has been open for almost a year, but they clearly don't have the basics of customer service down. So I will avoid this coffee shop at all cost. Take your money and go elsewhere! read more

I got an iced matcha with oat milk which is very delicious. I also ordered the avocado toast which delightfully comes with a poached egg on top, this was also delicious. This is a very cozy cafe with plenty of outlets and great ambiance. Excellent place to sit down and meet with someone or just quietly work by yourself. I came here to read my book in between job assignments. This company seems to support small businesses and organic/natural products as well. You would do well to support this business. One thing to mention is that the outside of the business does have cute seating arranged also but beyond the patio the location is kind of sketchy. I read one review that said this place "is not for kids and it's expensive" i paid about $23 for a matcha and avocado toast. The food is definitely curated for those with a refined pallet. I also want to inquire who in the world thinks that a cafe is a good spot for kids in the first place, although while I was here i didn't suspect that children would be unwelcome at all. This is a good coffee shop but not so much for food. They serve Vigilante coffee which is good, lots of little tables for working or for meeting with friends and a large pastry selection. Pros: Pupusas were toasty and tasty, with a large side of kimchi Coffee was good Cons: We ordered the breakfast bagel sandwich with tomato added. The everything bagels were good and the home fries were crispy. Good portion size, good eggs, but my boyfriend's sandwich was not salted and he found it extremely bland (in spite of the bacon and cheddar). The kitchen also ran out of tomatoes, but instead of telling us they were out, they threw on the tomato ends (see photo), which no kitchen would ever serve you, not even Subway. We would have been okay if someone would have just told us they were out of tomatoes. The hit or miss bagel sandwiches, and use of tomato ends is why they're getting three stars. tl;dr: come here for coffee and lots of room to work or chill. read more

I went to Detour Coffee today and can i just way WOW. The espresso wasn't too strong or bitter which i enjoyed. They had beer and other options to drink and it's something i also enjoyed (not a good combo on the stomach lol) but i had the U Street sandwich and it was amazing, I LOVED THE mumbo sauce. OVERALL the thing i loved the most was the man who took my order. i think this was the best customer service i have ever received. i didn't catch his name, but he made the already great interior even better with his personality, Honestly i wish i would've found this cafe sooner because i would've been here everyday just to study. read more

Let's start with the good: environment and decor - 5 stars. I loved the feel here and all the decorations were whimsical and eccentric. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience really turned me off, and that included not being able to find the place in the first place! They didn't have their sign up, so my boyfriend and I were walking around that corner wondering how we could have missed it. Once we realized that it's in the building with "Darna" in front of it, we walked in and asked a server for a menu as she was placing menus on the table. Instead of giving us one from her hands, she icily looked at us and pointed at the counter. The menu on the counter did not have the brunch menu items that I saw on the website, so we asked the barista behind the counter, who told us to go back and grab it from that previous table. Alright then. There needs to be some more cohesiveness within this place, and updating the menu on the website would be helpful too. Online, it says that an extra espresso shot is $3.75 (whaatttt?!) but in store it says (thankfully) $0.75. Please update that. We ordered 2 iced coffees, which were terrible. Mine almost had a vinegar-y taste to it, and no amount of sugar could fix it. I did not finish my drink at all. Boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich, which was good and came with fries. I ordered the Norwegian, which was described as "Smoked salmon, sour cream, dill, eggs, capers, greens, tomato, cucumber & onion on a croissant." I questioned about the capers as I didn't want them, and the guy told me that I could just pick them off, which is not a problem. However, the sandwich was more of a tuna-salad consistency, and with OLIVES instead of capers. There was no easy way to pick out all the sliced olives in this mix, and I could not enjoy the sandwich. The menu also promised home fries with breakfast sandwiches, and I got potato chips. Terrible experience and I really won't ever be making a detour for Detour. read more

Really enjoy coming here. It seems like it is off the beaten path as it's never crowded (unlike Northside down the street). Brought my computer this morning to get some work done. Ordered a coffee that was good along with a bagel sandwich. The sandwich was good. Unfortunately, they were out of bacon, but replaced it with ham which I appreciate. I will say I would recommend them to tell the customer upfront before assuming they will be okay because not everyone may be okay with that. The side of fruit paired very nicely and I love the touch of powered sugar on top. A brunch recommendation is the Englishmen if you're in to blood sausage. I love the vibe and the service could not be any better as they are friendly and bring everything to you. This is definitely my go to spot. read more

Such a fan of Detour! It's in such a weird spot... It's next to a Jiffy Lube. BUT that does not take away from the whole experience of this coffee shop. The indoor and outdoor spaces are very well decorated, well lit, and provide a very nice and cozy place to grab coffee with a friend or to do some work if you're working remote or a college student needing a place to study. The iced coffee was really good, and their menu of hot coffee/espresso drinks looked incredible - I just always prefer iced. I want to try more things on their menu for sure. I also got an empanada, which was very tasty and was plated exceptionally well for a coffee shop. I wanted to try a salad, unfortunately they were out of the one I wanted to try - but all the more reason to come back and try again! read more

This coffee shops is a gem. It's hidden behind the Speedway gas station, right under the Darna sign. The design of the place is so pretty and spacious. My iced oat latte was perfect and came in a really pretty glass (I'm a sucker for pretty glasses). Their outdoor patio is so nice on a non-humid day - maybe not the cleanest but you can tell someone put a lot of though into its layout. Food is pretty but not quite as good. Well, I have been coming here every other month for about a year and unfortunately must say that it has gone downhill. What used to be a fun, delicious, quirky little place for me to relax with some good food and a cool vibe is no longer that place. I don't know what happened but today I ordered my favorite (french toast) with a side of 2 scrambled eggs and bacon. French toast is normally loaded with syrup, fruit, nuts, and whipped cream was skimpy on all of that, missing nuts, 2 of the 4 slices were hard (stale?) and it was cold. The eggs were also cold and the bacon was a measly portion compared to the past when I had way more, like 2 orders of bacon! Asked for salt and pepper and never arrived. Was given plastic ware instead of the silverware I've had in the past. I ate outside, another normally pleasant experience, but seriously it does not look like the pillows, cushions, and carpet have gotten any cleaning in months, if at all, and overall logs dirty, torn, and worn out. Sorry Detour, but if something doesn't change I'll be making a Detour to someplace else when I visit from out of town for work. Please pull yourselves back up to your former glory! read more

I think this may be by new favorite coffee shop in Arlington. Not a coffee drinker so I can't attest to their drip, but their chai tea with almond milk was on point. For a small shop, there's ample seating and available outlets making it perfect spot for a relatively quiet afternoon of work. Note: Parking can be a little hairy. They have 6-9 free spots in front of the shop, but it's a small, tight lot. There is limited paid street parking around the block a paid public lot off of Fairfax near Northside Social. read more

The barista was delightful. I don't know if all the baristas are delightful, but this lady was and it really made my day better. Good coffee, chill atmosphere, and a nice person to have a chat with...dolce vita, baby, dolce vita. A few additional details: I ordered an iced skim latte. It was delicious, but equally important, it was served in a glass cup. GLASS. Not plastic or paper. To add metaphorical icing to this cake, the barista served it WITHOUT a straw. Yessss! I'm sure if this is an intentional policy by the café, but as a shameless Earth-lover, I'm always trying to preempt restaurant and café employees to go with reusable dishes and no single-use plastics (especially straws which are functionally non-recycable). Huge fan. Apparently the café is owned by the same owners as Darna. I came here to study and this was the perfect environment. It was a quiet space and I was able to focus during my time there. I ordered a caramel iced coffee and it was decent, next time I want to try something else on the menu. I also ordered a plain croissant and a Nutella croissant. The Nutella croissant didn't have any actual Nutella in it, so I asked the barista and she gladly gave me a different croissant with actual Nutella in it. I appreciated her willingness to replace it free of charge. I also liked the variety of options they had. I will definitely be returning to this cafe and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to study. read more
