Visited for the first time, after shopping at REI next door. I've been a daily regular at the big chain coffee place around the corner, but I like this better and will become an Underdog regular! It's my new first choice for coffee drinks around here. So many drink choices, plus pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and other cafe type food items. I got a coconut coffee and a bagel today, but I'll be trying all different things for a while. The entrance is not obvious from the main road since it's down a little hill in the parking lot on Carlin Springs. From the entryway, you wouldn't guess how big it is inside! After a couple of visits, this place strikes me as like a Tatte Bakery in ambiance, but with a less ambitious range of baked goods. As noted by others, parking is easy if a bit grungy, the "patio" is a parking lot, but the interior is spacious & clean and the staff is accommodating. If your thing happens to be bagels, go elsewhere. What they serve, any New Yorker would call "bread with a hole." read more

I decided to try underdog coffee today after they finally opened (it's been a while since I was back in the area). I got really excited about their peanut cream latte and wanted to try it iced. I will say, I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but this coffee tasted pretty strong, despite it looking milky in color! I wish there was more of the peanut cream because there was another cafe in California that is known for their peanut butter latte and it just wasn't the same. Either way, it was still delicious! This place is spacious, super clean, and very dog friendly! So many dogs in there with their owners, and you can ask for a pup cup for your dog. Very spacious inside! Newly opened underdog cafe right next to REI on Carlin Springs Rd. I had a chance to check out the cafe on a weekday morning. It wasn't crowded, but there were some people inside and outside seated. I got to try their apple turnover which was heated up for me and an ice butterscotch latte. The apple turnover was flaky and perfect. Butterscotch latte was like eating Werther's original candy. I have heard it is quite busy on the weekends so I am glad I came by to try during the weekday. This is a huge coffee shop and it's bright and open. While they have a lot of seating, it was hard to find a spot to sit on a Sunday morning. The iced latte and iced macchiato were great and despite them being busy, came out super quickly. I am so excited that Underdog is expanding beyond its original Annandale location, as I love their clean aesthetic and delicious drinks and food. The new location, next to REI in Bailey's Crossroads, might be a new favorite for me. First, the shop is easy to get to and clearly visible from the road. The inside seating area is huge, and it's not hard to find a comfy seat, where the Annandale location can feel a little cramped on a busy day. I ordered an Ube coconut latte, which arrived at the counter super fast, and was delicious and refreshing with the perfect level of sweetness. Currently the menu looks the same as the other location, but I have read that the long term plan is for each cafe to have some unique signature items on the menu. I'm really looking forward to coming back and seeing how this evolves. Be sure to check out the merch section, which is always cute, and includes some items I haven't seen at the other site, like tiny stuffed dachshunds. Adorable!! read more

It's so cute in here! The location is kind of random but I loved the inside, very spacious and had no trouble finding a seat on a Saturday morning. My sandwich was yummy!! My latte was as well. A great addition to this tired and worn area in Bailey's crossroads! Went to REI the other day and wonder aloud why the parking lot was so full when it's never like that, and voila underdog. Now there is usually parking so don't worry, and it is totally worth checking out this place. The space is huge and has a chic modern vibe, Just got coffee -love the hazelnut mocha latte (though it tastes more just mocha). Not sure if it was because it wasn't crazy busy right when they opened but they didn't ask for name, instead they place your drink with a printout which is nice so no guessing what each cup holds. Oh my gosh, I was so impressed with this coffee shop! The flavors and combinations they have are so absolutely awesome, it was so hard to pick one. Underdog Coffee & Bread has quickly become one of my favorite coffee spots in Northern Virginia. I've visited both locations--the original Annandale shop on Columbia Pike and their new Falls Church location--and they've been fantastic every time. The coffee is creative, unique, and consistently excellent. Today I had the Black Sesame Latte, which was rich, nutty, and unlike anything else around. On a previous visit, I tried their Banana Matcha, made with an entire banana blended into the drink, and it was absolutely incredible. The food deserves just as much attention as the coffee. Their breads and pastries are outstanding, and the sandwiches are on another level. Today I had Teddy's No. 1 on brioche, loaded with sausage, egg, cheese, tomato, and arugula. Every ingredient tasted fresh, and the buttery brioche tied everything together perfectly. While the Falls Church location doesn't have their famous Crogels available just yet, don't let that stop you. I've had the Crogel before at their Annandale location and it's incredible. The sandwiches alone are worth the trip, and honestly, I haven't had a bad thing here yet. The Falls Church shop is still in its soft opening phase, so now is the perfect time to check them out before the crowds catch on. Great coffee, amazing food, friendly staff, and a menu that's anything but ordinary. Come for the coffee. Stay for the sandwiches. You'll be glad you did. read more

What could improve? When the two items on you sign are coffee and bread, you'd believe that's what they're good at. Not here. Hard pass. Two drinks. A dry cappuccino. Tasted burnt. Second, a hot chocolate. Watered down. Food, expensive and old. What probably was great early morning was what was left in the case or on the baking rack. Really charming place and I am also a dog lover. I've visited here a couple times and tried a handful of things. Their burrito and an ube drink. While yes, I did enjoy it, but each item was missing a little "oomph" if that makes sense. Burrito was generous with the egg, but it was missing some sort of attractive spread to make it memorable. The ube was yummy but was it the best Ube drink in town? Not really. I still like this place and definitely would come back to hang out; solid 4 star concept in my opinion. read more

So, I feel compelled to leave a review, which I rarely do. I'm just perplexed by my experience at Underdog. It's got a super nice atmosphere, especially in an otherwise dumpy strip mall (if you can call it that). Inside, it's like being in a modern French cafe style...cafe. Employees were fairly friendly, but not overly so. Lots of room to park yourself with a laptop, and cozy seats to lounge in as you enjoy a coffee, which gets me to why I'm leaving this review. A few days ago, I decided to try this place. I ordered a flat white and scone. The flat white was fine (not great, just fine--sort of weak though). It cost about $5 and the one size was comparable in size to the smallest Starbucks size, which also costs about $5. The scone, on the other hand, was far from fine. It was weirdest scone I've eaten, and I've had a lot of them in my nearly 50 years on earth. It was like eating spongy piece of bread with a handful or raisins in it and maybe 1/8 a teaspoon of sugar. I can't understand how they call that a scone. It was awful. Also about $5. So, this is a new cafe, so I decided to give it a second chance a few days later. This didn't go well either. I asked for a drip coffee this time. About $4 for a regular mug of that. I specified dark roast. Employee said, yes it's dark roast. It was not. It was at best medium roast (I know the difference), and it tasted no better and possibly worse than a cup of crappy gas station coffee. I also ordered a cheese danish. It was the worst danish I've ever had, and I've had many over time. The pastry was super chewy and dry--I basically had to rip it away with my teeth and gnaw on it. The cheese filling was not remarkable either. I'm super disappointed. Lastly, this grip goes beyond just Underdog, but they have those annoying tip screens that sort of guilt you into leaving extra money. While Starbuck has nothing on the ambiance of Underdog, I'll go to Starbucks in the future for more predictable quality. I do hope Underdog gets better though--we really could use some better cafe options around that part of town. read more

I really want to like this place, but they are making it very difficult. I have now visited this cafe 4 times, and each time, there was some issue. First off, the staff behind the counter just doesn't seem to have a clue about any of the items I have ever ordered. Even when I ordered a basic "iced latte with almond milk," the cashier looked at me like I was an alien and asked, "Do you mean a cafe latte that is iced?" "Um, yeah, because I didn't use the word "cafe" it threw you off?" Whaaat? You work in a freakin' coffee shop and you don't know what an iced latte is?! On three separate occasions, I've ordered food: once a chocolate loaf cake that was so dry, I couldn't even finish it. Then, another time, I ordered a basic egg and cheese croissant, and nowhere on the menu, nor did the cashier mention, that it comes with mayo, which I don't want on my breakfast sandwich. Why would this not be listed on the menu and/or why wouldn't the cashier think to mention this? Same when I ordered the fully loaded avocado toast on another occasion--learning my lesson from the egg and cheese sandwich, I specifically asked what was on the avocado toast, and again it comes out with ingredients that weren't listed on the board and that the cashier failed to mention. It's like the staff just doesn't know their products, and why wouldn't it be listed on the menu in the first place?! This is just so bizarre to me. As for the coffee, I don't really care for it either--just way too strong tasting for me, even when diluted with milk and ice. I think I have to unfortunately give up on this place and go back to my original go-to coffee spots. read more
