The yelp pictures and item descriptions brought me to this coffee store, but I don't think I'll be returning. I ordered a macchiato and got a cortado, the nutty latte lacks any flavor of chocolate or nuts as advertised, the chai was generic and overpriced. The breakfast burrito was pretty good, but the eggs in my magician lacked flavor, even though they were scrambled with peppers and onions. I enjoyed the double chocolate muffin. read more

If you have a sudden urge to eat a breakfast sandwich, you have to try this place! I ordered the magician breakfast sandwich and got it on a bagel instead of the arepa. The arepa is a flat bread but I wanted something more filling. The sandwich has avocado, eggs, corn, queso fresco and Tabasco creme. Everything about it was absolutely delicious. The eggs were soft and fluffy and blended very well with the queso fresco and Tabasco creme. I personally am not a huge fan of Tabasco but surprisingly really enjoyed it. The magician comes with a side of fruit or homefries. I highly recommend the home fries. The service was also fantastic. Definitely my new go to spot for a Sunday morning breakfast sandwich. Every detour is not a distraction, sometimes it leads to the perfect destination, that's how I landed here. Craving a macchiato I decided to stop here and see what was poppin. Being amongst the first to arrive, you get your choice of where you'd like to sit. The big red chairs grabbed my attention so thats where my journey began. After reviewing the menu, I settled in on the pancakes and a macchiato. The macchiato was bold, bud grabbing and superbly warming and comforting. Soooo I sipped it slow to savor the flavor. The best way to describe it is tiny cup with a big taste. The pancakes were absolutely beautiful!!!! The presentation was popping but the temperature was cold. I was super sad that they did not taste as they looked. The flavor was there, the fruit was fresh but the cakes were ice cold. *insert tears here* I alerted our server and she apologized asked if I wanted something else to which I declined. I had my heart set on these beauties so I knew nothing else would do. The manager came and apologized and offered to have them remade and deliver them himself, which was nice but I still declined. He offered and insisted on bringing me a sweet. He bought over a strawberry and yogurt croissant that was amazing!!! So happy I did not decline that lol. I admire the level of customer service and their willingness to make it right to ensure I was satisfied. Although this visit was of the brunch kind, I would be willing to come back again for a coffee ( which was amazing ) along with trying a lunch/dinner bite. Detour is conveniently located between Clarendon and Ballston and provides parking space is needed. The service, food, and coffee are good overall. They serve vigilante coffee which is a home run. Pastries are also yummy and fresh. The ambiance is for any type of gathering whether you're working, meeting with friends, or you can sit by yourself. The only con this place has is that their arepas are not well cooked. They are on the thicker side and so they need to sit on the pan much longer. Considering that this is one of their staples, I expected this to be well done. read more

I wanted some recommendations since it was my first time, and the barista was dismissive. this place finally found its legs! i came here early on when they had opened and had a great cortado but now i have to say i prefer it to northside social, the food is great, like even the fries are wonderful (pro tip, ask for garlic aioli to dip it into, gamechanger). I had the Rueben and it was SO good, my friend had the breakfast sandwich which was also a real success. more places need to serve sandwiches on pretzel rolls! they still make a great cortado but they also have cute seasonal beverages and the space is really comfy and cozy. they also have a great brunch menu! read more

I loved my experience here. Everything was delicious. There was not a massive amount of seating options but it was definitely not overcrowded like Northside Social as many have already mentioned. Actually since it was around 1pm, it was passed the morning brunch rush. I got the salmon breakfast sandwich. I wanted to try the almond croissant but they'd ran out already. That's what I get for coming in late on a Saturday. My husband got the strawberry croissant which honestly tasted like a big toaster strudel! Pairs well with black coffee or tea. With my salmon sandwich, my husband's steak and eggs, our fries and croissant, and drinks, we were both very very full. We'd def do it again. read more

While Detour is stylishly decorated, the food and service are a no-go for me. The website hours are incorrect, and if you can't be bothered to update your website, that already shows poor customer service. I also think that in 2018 you should make sure your Yelp and Google hours are correct as well, but that's a digression. I walk in and none of the staff says anything to me. So I think they are open. It's not until I go to order something that the cashier says they are not open. She was very rude and very unfriendly. But she let me order anyway. The pastries sound good, but don't actually look appetizing. Since I was brusquely informed that caramel was not an option for the lattes, I ordered the nitro cold brew and the pupusas. Looking at the menu board, the pupusas appear to come with fruit or home fries, but in actuality, do not. That needs to be fixed, as does the dish in general because they were bland and not good. The two brights spots were the decor and my nitro cold brew. The coffee was creamy and delicious, correctly served in a tulip glass. The decor is really cute and hip. Another dim spot happened though when the music changed from lounge music to blaring rock, which was not appreciated at that hour. Also, fairly sure the bathroom I used didn't have a lock on it. Detour is SUCH a gem. Everything I have consumed at this place has been so delicious - from their wide variety of sandwiches to the various coffees, teas, and cocktails they offer. Detour has quickly become one of my favorite places to work remotely...The ambiance is incredibly cozy with an abundance of comfortable seating and outlets. Came here to check out the hype. Indeed this is a great place to get some coffee, tea or a sandwich. I came here on a week day about a hour before closing and there were plenty of seats which is great. I like how they have couches you can sit on and relax a bit compared to other places with hard chairs. I wish this place would stay open later, it could be my home away from home. I ordered a Jasmin tea and Chivito with no bread. Both were excellent, and they bring it to your table. They definitely don't cut corners on the sandwich meat. I was full even without the bread. As for the Jasmin, it came in a little tea pot so you get about 3 cups worth of tea, which is more than enough caffeine for me. As others have said this is to the left of Jiffy Lube directly under Darnas. It's a bit of a hike for me but I still plan on coming back. read more

Cute & Cozy. With guidance from the nice man at the register, I opted for the El Nene (pork belly sandwich) while my friend decided on the Milanesa (breaded beef sandwich). I also ordered the Fez tea which is their green tea w/ a blend of spearmint & other herbs. When you dine in and order hot tea, they give you your own little personal pot to take back to your seat. The tea was good but I only got to enjoy one cup because I didn't realize the pot still contained the tea leaves and by the time I was ready for another, it had steeped for too long making it bitter (maybe a rookie mistake on my end). We both enjoyed our meals however I do wish my sandwich had a little more of the aioli as it kind of got dried up in the bread. I was also told that the sandwich was on the spicier side but that was lacking as well. All in all a good experience, & worth checking out! BTW the location is weird. Particularly I was unimpressed with the "across steak lines" as it was just a bland Philly cheesesteak. The aesthetic of the overall place inside is perfectly done. The exterior would be perfect if it wasn't facing a gas station in downtown Arlington. The parking situation is also a nightmare as there are only 8 spots that fill up quite quickly. It's through an inconspicuous wooden door between a Jiffy Lube and a restaurant in a random part of Virginia Square in Arlington. You walk in and are greeted by burning fire art to your right and a hilarious "break the glass" art of a coffee cup (just visit and you'll understand). It's one big room with booths, window seats, a long table, and couches. There are outlets at almost every table with strong, free wifi. Little lights decorate the space along with bikes on the wall and hanging white coffee mugs (yep!). They have a full coffee menu with good coffee (my latte was good!). They also serve wine, cheese, and a few other dinner options since they stay open late (love when coffee shops stay open late!). The service is friendly and on point. Be wary of using the right ratio of oatmilk to tea, but if you get it right this earl grey is the absolute perfect blend for an LF. Ive been coming to Detour for coffee for a few weeks and hadn't tried any of the food until today. Im picky and have food allergies. But i realize now I've been missing out. The recipes and the cooking technique are insane. I got the Avocado Toast, which is Not just avocado on toast (as at other cafes). This is a perfectly seasoned avocado guacamole, on toasted sourdough, then topped with spinach, arugula, pickled onions and a perfectly poached egg. The bread I recognized as sourdough before tasting bc of the classic cut and texture- crispy crust and light center with a bit of a bite under the knife. Yes knife- its a big portion and i had to cut in half to pick up. Ive never had pickled onions and these bring great balance to the whole. The Avocado Toast on the menu comes with cheese and tomatoes which I didnt get (bc of my allergies), but the Avo Toast taste did Not suffer in any way. This breakfast (&brunch?) item also came with potato wedges lightly fried. When I was in my 20s, I searched for the perfect (potato) fries and didnt find them until now. This is how they should be- crispy outside, consistently light and fluffy texture through the center. Oh my, this place is awesome. Skills here. Insane, amazing skills! Oh and the coffee!!! Theres a reason I've made a point of coming back over and over again!!! So, so good!!! And they sell the beans to take home. :) read more

Arrived at Detour on a Sunday for brunch because we'd seen glowing reviews and it looked like a spot we'd like. First impressions were that the place had nice decor, and the menu looked interesting. The place looked mostly clean, minus the finished food still sitting at the communal table from where someone must have recently left (or so I thought.) They menu definitely has more options than your standard brunch/coffee shop, which was a plus in our book. At this point, we're off to a good start. We ordered at 11:29 am - see attached pictures of our receipt with time stamp. My husband ordered the brunch royal (a burger), and I ordered the bagel sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese and their watermelon salad. After we ordered, my husband asked if we needed to wait or take a number, and the guy at the register said "no, we'll bring it to you." So we take a seat outside on the patio. I immediately notice there's another table with leftover plates and food where the people must have "recently left." We had been sitting outside and a half hour past. I thought, "man this is taking a long time for a burger and a bagel sandwich." Then it was almost an hour... no word from anyone - no one came out to say our food was on the way, or sorry for the delay, etc... nothing. We're not people to complain, but my husband went in to see what was going on since it had been an hour of waiting at that point. The person at the register told him "yea we're having delays ... it should be out soon... we'll send you a couple snacks for waiting." After another couple minutes, they brought us out a beef empanada and what looked like an egg quiche with potatoes - something that looked like could have been heated up quickly in the microwave. These "snacks" were generous, but also, weren't anything close to what we ordered and weren't what we wanted. We were told again that there were delays with the kitchen, and our food should be out shortly. This was at 12:31 pm (see timestamp I'm attached picture). At that point, we asked for the food we ordered to be put in to-go boxes. After 20 more minutes of waiting, our food was STILL not out yet... we heard several people who arrived AFTER us complaining that they had been waiting for 45 minutes... another complaining it had been over an hour of waiting ... so this wasn't an isolated incident. Those two groups complaining still got their food before us, so we were getting pretty frustrated. Also, it should be noted that the leftover food on the tables around us had not been cleared by anyone the entire time we were there. We finished the "snacks" they brought and we wanted to get on with our day at this point, so once again we headed inside to inquire about our order, and/or ask for a refund. As we were walking back in, we ran into one worker who was bringing out our to-go boxes. Total time it took = 1 hour and 20 minutes (see timestamp picture)!!! We didn't even check the boxes because we were so ready to leave. When we got home, we realized they didn't even pack our watermelon salad, which we paid for. Also, we probably won't even eat the food we ordered because both our dishes have eggs and leftover reheated eggs are pretty gross. To top it off, because we paid up front, we tipped 20% on the worst service I've ever experienced. If it wasn't for the horrendous service, we could have liked the place.
