Staff was awesome. They were very informative and polite. Stock was phenomenal, even in a time like we are in now. Purchase was a breeze. There was an issue with a couple screws on the skin of the trailer and a tech came out and fixed it no problem. The guys really really know their stuff about trailers and have no problem answering questions. They even swapped a fuse out on my truck because the lights in the trailer would not turn on. Highly recommend. read more

On a lovely sunny Saturday my husband and I drove two hours to this business, cash in hand, only to leave empty handed. They evidently are not in the business of actually selling trailers. We had driven by this establishment many a time, impressed by the vast inventory of trailers. As we were looking to purchase a trailer, today, it was a sure shot to have exactly what we needed in stock. Despite a very unfortunate adventure thanks to road construction, we still arrived about 20 minutes before closing. Oddly the gate was across the entrance, which was moved aside by a gentleman leisurely smoking a cigarette. My husband was rudely informed at the sales office that "two employees have prior commitments and cannot stay." Assuming that we could still purchase a trailer based on seeing at least six employees, we made our way to the type of product we were looking for. On our way the gentleman who was smoking stopped us and gave us better directions as to where we needed to go. While he was nice and tossed his cigarette when my husband informed him that I was deathly allergic, we were extremely concerned about purchasing a so-called new item knowing it had likely been inundated with something that can kill me. As almost all material absorbs some level of the toxins in cigarette smoke, I am shocked that this is permitted, especially in considering the significant investment inherent in purchasing trailers. Even without the smoke issue, once we were actually looking at trailers we were sent away by another gentleman, who stated that the secretary is the only person who is capable of completing the sales paperwork and that she was leaving due to a prior commitment. It would seem to me that an operation of that size would have more than one individual trained to handle the paperwork, but this is evidently not the case. Take your business elsewhere, where they have respect for what they are selling and who they are selling it to- we did! read more

I had a very bad experience at Detro Trailer Sales. I had recently purchased a travel trailer from another source in a different state. I stopped here to inquire about purchasing a weight distribution hitch which is used to level your trailer and tow vehicle making for safer towing. The young salesman told me I needed some "overload shocks" and the weight distribution hitch would not help my problem. Having towed heavy trailers all my life...I'm 62, I knew 1. He was wrong, 2. Overload shocks were not the safest solution and in fact the weight distribution hitch was exactly what I needed. After some discussion, he finally told me he had the WD hitches and they were $300 to $325. Another salesman standing there said they just got a used one in the day before with a trade in and it was in very good shape. He took me to look at it in another building. It was to large for my trailer/vehicle rig but I thought if I could get it for the right price I could buy the right size torsion bars. The salesman went and asked the manager how much they wanted for the used set. $275. I decided on the new set for obvious reasons. I asked to see the ones he had and he walked me down the isle and pointed at some boxes. I asked the salesman what the torsion bar rating was on the hitches. He had no idea what I was talking about. It's critical that you match the right hitch to the trailer and tow vehicle weight. I'm thinking, ok, we'll figure that out. I asked him how much to install the hitch. He went and asked the manager and came back and told me they didn't want to install the hitch on my kind of truck. I said ok and walked out. I have a 2005 Ford PU. Not wanting to install the hitch was bullshit. They were all set to sell me a used hitch at a huge profit that was unsafe and not right for my truck and then when I pointed out the proper size I needed they didn't want my business. It's best to keep on driving if you are looking for expertise on setting up a safe towing rig. These guys haven't a clue on how to set up your trailer/vehicle to safely tow your rig. And remember....if you have an accident because of unsafe towing YOU are liable AND your Insurance may not cover you. read more

The business also employs 8-10 people and serves the surrounding community as much as possible. Detro Trailers LLC still offers multiple leading brands of trailers such as Sure-Trac, Cargo Express, Look, Pace American, Cam Superline, Aluma, Air-Tow, Sport Trailers and Imperial along with several other manufacturers. Today, just as it's been for almost 35 years, the main business objective of Detro Trailers LLC is still the same - Provide outstanding customer service while offering a quality trailer at the best possible price to the customer.

History

Established in 1990.

Detro Trailer Sales' humble beginning started from a need that arose from one of the many different business ventures of Dan and Jessie Detro... In 1979, the original property at the corner of US 36 & US 231 was purchased to facilitate a gravel & grain operation. They eventually decided to add several new items for sale such as tools and China cabinets. This led to the need to add storage buildings to the property. This particular set-up worked fine until Dan purchased a small, used enclosed trailer. This move then created an unanticipated problem - people kept wanting to buy that trailer. In August of 1990, Detro Trailer Sales began with an inventory of 5 trailers. Dan & Jessie sold three trailers in that first year - and were thrilled! The fledgling trailer business steadily grew and eventually became large enough that they had to purchase more land for their ever-growing inventory - expanding the lot to the 30+ acres it is today! Eventually the inventory grew to 1000 trailers!

A friend recently bought a horse trailer from them and they treated him very well, so I called them because I needed some work done on my trailer. Just some trim work, re-packing wheel bearings, and 4 new tires. The guy I spoke to said they don't do tires because they don't make enough money on them. Ok...fair enough. Then he him-hawed around for a few minutes about the trim, talking about how he's gotten into trouble on that before. I asked if they weren't interested in the job and he said they have plenty of work to do, so I told him I would just try somewhere else. This tells me they're more interested in moving inventory than in being a full service source.
