Chimney cap blew off due to a storm in March. Detroit Chimney Sweep was original installer back in 2018 and they came out to re-install in May. The entire team at Detroit city sweep Is awesome. From updating, maintaining and servicing 3 fireplaces in a historic home to helping us vent our kitchen stove in our hearth the entire team from quoting to scheduling to actual work has been wonderful to work with. The first thing I noticed right away is they actually answer their phone when they call so that was already a plus for me. I was able to schedule an estimate quickly and get someone out to help us address our main issue which was our kitchen not venting correctly, in addition to a fireplace that we would soon need because of the cold Detroit winter. As a new homeowner, we did want to make sure that the fireplaces were in good working condition before we actually started using them so we requested a estimate on what the service and maintenance could potentially be for the fireplaces that we had in our house and any recommendations that they would have. The process was very straightforward. They easily walked us through the quote and what was needed and why, in addition to what the current condition of the fireplace was in to what would need to be done and how it would fix the problem as well as what comes after the service what could be expected what they would be able to help us with should we come across any hiccups after the fireplace maintenance and what warranties came with the products that we purchased. We purchased dampers some gas fire logs, and had our fireplaces updated so that we could use them last winter. From there coming this winter, we assumed that we would have to have the fireplaces serviced again because it was a new year, though we only had a handful of fires in the living room fireplace they scheduled the appointment. They were prompt and scheduling, as well as coming out for service and transparent enough to say we haven't used our fireplace enough to fully warrant a cleaning. This was refreshing to see this type of honesty from a contractor. Then we ended up having an issue with the smoke coming into our house on our serviced fireplace. They were able to address solve an analyze, the reasons why the smoke was coming in to our living room, though everything looked up-to-date and ready to go. It was next level problem-solving skills that they would rarely run across because of the unique fireplace that we had in our Historic house. It was very appreciated that they did not just give up and ask us to spend a gazillion dollars to throw money at a problem. This company is total scam. I called in Detroit City Sweep company for our fire place problem and set an appointment. The person who came to check on it arrived way later then the appointment time. He came, set down in front of the chimney, only looked at it and his response was "there is nothing wrong with it". Why is it still smoking when I build a fire in the chimney, then? After my random question about dampener, he gave me a quote for changing the dampener cap and a brochure about how to build a fire and left. He never looked from outside nor checked inside for any potential problem. Total amount of time he spent was less than 10 min. and charged for $100. It was a total rip off. Support black businesses. I say support qualified businesses! I contacted Detroit City Sweep in the summer of 2018 for concert step replacement and gutter installment. The steps incorrectly installed verified by the City of Detroit, and the gutter was never finished and improperly installed. I have been in contact with this Company about the steps for two years. Total run around. The owner has refused to contact me and also made false promises. He quoted last year," We'll fix the steps for you at no cost to you," well, I already paid. He acts as though it's my fault; he has third party individuals who are not qualified or a license to perform the work that they are hired to perform. Now that's there is a problem with the steps I'm being referred to the worker who installed the steps whom I talk to several times, his behavior was abusive, and he was very angry with the City of Detroit and me. I refuse to have any more contact with this person. I am a black female; therefore, I sure they don't think that they have to stand by the work or the five years guarantee. We've used Detroit City Sweep for a few years - 1st for chimney cleaning then masonry work (pointing brickwork throughout the exterior & porch). Chimney work always appeared OK & price was reasonable (relative to other quotes). Pointing was a different story. Bricks separating from the cinder lock backing on our front porch, which they repaired, but a year later, I found they stopped just above the grade - leaving much work undone. When I scraped the dirt away (finding the full extent of the problem), the charged me again - for essentially completing the job from the previous year- then rinsed their tools & dumped excess mortar on the front lawn, killing about a 40 square foot patch of lawn - chunks of mortar dried throughout the lawn, which I had to dig out & replace. I wouldn't care if a little grass was killed, but this was a big patch in a very visible part of the front lawn. Just carelessness or lack off thought about how they were leaving the job site. Would NOT use them again. read more

I got a call 30 minutes before they were going to come out so I didn't have to stay home the whole time. The technician (Tekio) was very polite, friendly, efficient. WOW! I called this company & had an appointment for Saturday & the tech ended up calling an hour/half early asking if he could come and put the estimate in my mailbox. My husband & I were not home due to him coming so much earlier but planned to be at the scheduled time. His estimate was &475 for 2 flues. I called Monday morning to enquirer about the 2 flues & was told the guy would check again. He just left my home after putting up 2 chimney caps telling me one of them was a "dummy" to enhance the home. In other words, had I not enquired I wold have paid $250 for a cap that WAS NOT NECESSARY AND PUT OVER A BLOCK OF CEMENT. The technician became visibly nervous when I questioned this quickly trying to say he told me. He was shaking & upset. I had him call his boss and taped everything. He then reduced the price to $200 after telling him I'm calling the media. As the tech was leaving he then threatened to get me as one of his family members was a policeman and he's going to send him here. He said this twice. I called the company to tell them this & the lady answering the phone basically tried to imply I'm lying because I'm upset at being threatened by her coworker. Scary stuff with this company. Not only dishonest but this man threatened my safety because I called him out for trying to scam me. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Bad business! Boy. I reached out to the company to schedule an appointment to receive an estimate for a minor gutter repair. I was given a 4-hour time block for the technician to arrive. He didn't. I called the company and was told that he had car difficulties en route. He also recently switched phone providers and was therefore unable to contact me or the company in order to communicate the delay. They were apologetic, so I rescheduled for the next day. The technician did arrive and apparently surveyed the area and left. I say "apparently" because he was there for ~2 minutes. I was told I would receive an estimate. Three days later, no estimate. I called for the last time to get an update (I was hoping that my email address had been incorrectly captured and they had indeed tried to email me). It wasn't and they didn't. I informed the representative that I no longer needed an estimate because I was dubious that they could keep any commitments. Your miles may vary, but this was an incredibly frustrating experience, and I would not recommend this company. read more

Tech came out to sweep an incinerator chimney and said it didn't need an actual sweeping, so just vacuumed out the bottom but still charged us full price. He also charged an extra $100 for "animal removal" to shovel out a few bird bones using tools and a garbage bag we provided since he didn't have any with him. He left the very heavy bag of trash/debris behind for us to dispose of. Office called to see how the service was and I explained the above. I write this review feeling very frustrated and disappointed but will try to keep my emotions out of it. My initial experience with DCS was really positive. We purchased a new home in Pleasant Ridge and had DCS come out to do an assessment of the chimney and fireplace. They were prompt, courteous and cost competitive. We received a detailed report costing out the necessary repairs and the technician took time to explain what was needed. The trouble began when I attempted to have the work done. The same technician (from the inspection) came out to start the work. Over an hour later he came to the door to tell me that far more substantial work was needed, he couldn't do it that day, and that I would need scaffolding to do any of the work. To be clear I was told the scaffolding was needed to do not only the original work but also the new work (completely replacing the limestone cap). Feeling frustrated I called back to schedule the new work. It took several calls to get accurate pricing for the cost of the scaffolding and custom limestone cap. I was told the technician would arrive between 11am and 1pm. At 11:12 the technician called to ask whether or not the scaffolding had arrived yet. I told him "no". He said he would call to see where it was and hung up. At 12:59 pm I called the main line to inquire where the crew was. I was placed on hold and then told the crew would not arrive at all. The reason given was weather (i'll return to that). I asked to speak to the owner. The owner apologized but reiterated the same reason for rescheduling, safety and weather. They acknowledged they should have called me much earlier but offered no solution or compensation beyond rescheduling. From my perspective this adds up to a really bad experience. Everyone makes mistakes and i like to think i'm a pretty flexible guy. However, I've now taken 3 days off from work to get this done and it's not done. I have a background in the real estate and construction and it's a big red flag for me when a company rebids a job once hired, especially when it's the same crew that did the initial estimate. A reputable firm should always stand behind their bids or try to work with an owner when they have made a mistake in the bid out of courtesy. On the scheduling, I have no way to prove i'm being lied to or that they made a mistake in scheduling. All i can do is provide facts that lead me to that conclusion. Others can interpret them as they wish. OSHA standards for 2nd story scaffolding work seem to be set at no more than 40 MPH although there is comment on the safety at 25 MPH (see https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/federalregister/1996-08-30-1). At 1:09 pm the maximum sustained wind at my home was 17 MPH (see below). The wind had remained constant all day at that speed or below. Perhaps they have some internal policy far below the OSHA standard but they should have disclosed that. More strange being that the inspection was performed on a day where the maximum sustained gusts were 20 mph and averaged 15 mph. That inspection was performed on a ladder so one would think if you cant work on scaffolding at 17 mph, 20 on a ladder would be a no go. Again, maybe it was the wind but i think it's more likely they made a mistake in scheduling for the scaffolding and didn't want to admit it. As i said, i'm disappointed. We go out of our way to support local businesses especially those based in Detroit (I believe they are Detroit based but can't be certain). Things started out great but i'm leaving this experience feeling frustrated and lied to. If they had simply said "you know what, we screwed up and we're going to make it right" that would have been enough for me. Instead I got excuses and placing the blame on the technician who wasn't on the phone. It's just not the way to run a business and a pity because our community is tight nit and referrals mean everything. I know this review will come off as petty and is overkill on the detail. However, i think Yelp is used far too often to abuse small businesses unfairly. It only seems fair that if I'm going to leave a review that could negatively impact someone's livelihood, i should stand behind it with facts and evidence instead of ranting and raving. read more

We had a problem with putting a lining in our chimney after our water heater broke-The company would not put in a water heater until we got the liner in John and Steve came out on New Year's Day and worked for three hours at our house. I called this company and scheduled a chimney evaluation and cleaning. They sent me a young man named Adam who came very prepared and worked diligently and took very good care of my uncle's chimney. I knew my uncle's water heater liner may be collapsed but wasn't sure. Adam confirmed it and I scheduled for them to come out and fix it. They called me to keep me updated on their timing and when the crew arrived, they were extremely young but very knowledgeable. It's the same feeling you get when you see doctors who barely look old enough to vote...They needed extra parts and their boss Steven came with another helper. The liner was replaced, the place was cleaned up and he stayed for hours, late on a Friday night with a smile and a professional behavior. They went above and beyond and did more than expected by making sure there was no CO2 leaking anymore, sealing all the ducts to each other and even replacing ducts to another appliance! Dan came out an hour after his call time, only because he had been in an accident earlier in the day and had to have his van's window replaced. I wish I reviewed this company before I hired them. They were recommneded by Angi's list , I dont know how? $3000 Estimate to repair a chimnny that was decleared " unsafe" by their "tech" . The lady answering the phone is very nice , Steve as well . other than that, this was a mess . We agreed on a $2700 price , they stated that the job will take 3 days , I was asked to leave %50 deposit. Their contractor showed up on a rainy Saturday morning , but did not do anything at all, then on Monday, late afternoon , I got a call from my tenent with their contractor , screeming and cussing demanding the full amount , Mr. Jordon , threatned me to put a lien on my house, I did not understand; the 3 days job was done in less than 6 hours . again , Stave called me, nice guy , we talked , but I did not need a freind, I needed my chimnny fixed . I went to check out the work , messy , incomplate , I sent them pictures and they sent out somone to finish the job. I called them to ask for their address , since it is not on the work order. I drove to a residential area in Detroit , on a rainy day , I was told that the "office" is a mess , it was acually a house, and was told to simply write the check in the car. They get one star because I can't leave 0. My appointment was on Nov. 13 between the hours of 1 PM-4 PM. I called them at 1:30 PM to ask if they could give me an approximate time. A woman could not. At 4:30 PM, I called to see what was the hold up. The woman, apologized and said she would call me back. She called back within 20 minutes to say the were runnng behind and would be there within an hour. At 6:30 PM, NO DETROIT CITY SWEEP, NO CALL, NOTHNG. The worker (Dean) was very thorough and explained all the repairs that were needed. They were very professional and had dimiliar options as our other provider, they were a bit pricey so we did not accept their estimate, price was the only real difference and they would not bust out the old tile and they use a smaller flue pipe.
