My family and I love love loved the food and vibe of this restaurant! The server was friendly and the service was quick! She was able to separate our orders into three portions. I had the spinach salad to start, which had strawberry, goat cheese, and candied nuts with balsamic vinaigrette. It was light and delish! My parents had the caesar and I tried a bite. It was so good and unique! Definitely recommend :) We also shared the calamari and ricotta apps. Both were standouts, but I found the ricotta to be extra amazing! I loved the calamari too... especially the spicy dipping sauce! Since we did a few courses, I ended with a half portion of the summer cavatelli, which was one of my favorite pasta dishes I have ever had! It had corn, truffle, and goat cheese. The goat cheese was piped on the top, so when you mixed it all together, it was perfection. The half portion was actually pretty large and I had some left over! We made a reservation through Resy at Dettera specifically for an outdoor table to celebrate a friend's birthday. My confirmation stated "outside table". When we arrived, the hostess/manager told us our reservation was marked "unassigned" and said there was no outdoor seating available. It was a beautiful night and we did not want to sit indoors. This is why we chose the restaurant and made the outdoor reservation well in advance. I showed her my confirmation, but she simply said "sorry, only inside table available tonight." Meanwhile, there were open tables right outside along the sidewalk. When I asked why we couldn't sit there, I was told "that section isn't open tonight. no servers assigned." This was their mistake, not ours. A good restaurant would make it right--let us sit in the empty tables out front, find a solution, or at the very least offer something (a future credit, an apology beyond "sorry"). Instead, we were met with a dismissive attitude and zero effort to accommodate us. Dettera may have good food, but service and hospitality matter just as much. On a special night, they failed miserably. We won't be back. read more

Beautiful restaurant stationed on a lovely street in Ambler adjacent to the old Ambler Theater. Exquisite atmosphere if you dine outside and the inside is nothing to frown about either. Now on to the food. Bucatini with Scallops - They had two options for this appetizer, small or large size and we opted for the large size to split. This is house made Bucatini which is one of my favorite pasta's and this appetizer did not disappoint. Terrific appetizer and unfortunately it looks like they already have replaced this on the dinner menu with Bucatini with Meatballs in its place : ( Raspberry Point Oysters - Very different, these were prepared with what appears to be a lime sorbet or something of the like frozen in a small pearl shape on the Oysters. I respect the establishment trying out different methods of preparing Oysters but after having two with this flavor blast similar to lime water ice I opted to remove the unique item from the remainder of my portion of the Oysters. Question for the owners, is this the only type of Oysters you offer? May want to offer generic Oysters for those that want the option for traditional Oysters. Mushroom Toast - This appetizer was a home run complete with Buffalo Milk Burrata and Black Truffle Aioli accompanied by local mushrooms on Toast. If you do not have a large appetite this appetizer and a glass of wine may be a perfect pick me up and a healthy fun option. Wine Selection - I was a bit surprised being a Wine Bar that they did not have more options for Red wines by the glass. I wasn't a fan of the Cab that I had but that's ok as the overall meal I was really happy with. I will have to check the other reviews to see if they have Happy Hour as it does not state on their website but if they offer it I would be inclined to come back here for a beverage and some more of their house made pasta options. Great service and the food was excellent. We had the mushroom soup, pappardelle and a meatball dish. Everything was delicious.

After questioning where our dinners were after waiting 45 minutes our waitress told us " it's Saturday night and we have 140 people to feed." No apology. After another 15 minutes , one of us went to the hostess and asked for the manager. We were sent upstairs to look for him (he wasn't there) and finally found him after ten minutes. He told us "it's a Saturday night and things are busy. " Again, no apology or any demonstrated interest. When we did get our food, almost 90 minutes from ordering it was quite good. Unfortunately, we were far too annoyed to enjoy it. At no point in the evening did anyone check with us to ask how things were, to give us an update on our meals, to ask if we wanted more wine--nothing! When we ran down someone to give us more bread while we waited for entrees they delivered three rolls for four people!! I have received better service and interest at my local pizza joint! It's a shame that a restaurant with ambiance and good food can be this unpleasant. None of us will return. read more

Beware - New Owners and a very rough start. Been to Dettera many times since it opened years ago, this was the first truly bad experience with service and food. Came at 6:25 for a 6:30 reservation. 20 minutes to get drinks and the Old Fashioned was poor. Ordered food at 7:00 and mentioned that we needed to leave by 7:50 for a show. Waitress just shrugged. At 7:35 asked about food and they went to check. At 7:40 they said it was in the window and I asked that it just be put in a to go box. That took a while and finally walked out at 7:50. The host was sincerely apologetic, comped the meal and gave us two gift cards which was very nice. Said they were busy but the outside and upstairs were closed and the downstairs was maybe 70% filled. Then when I got home and opened the meal (Salmon) I couldn't believe how pathetic it looked (pic below is before I touched it). Also really disappointed with the lack of any flavor. Will not be going back until I hear they've gotten their s**t together. read more

My first time to Dettera! We made a reservation via OpenTable and were seated immediately. Overall food was incredible but service was not wonderful (started very slow but improved over our visit.) We will definite return to try the rest of the menu! Food: 10/10, would give higher if I could. We started with mushroom toast, dozen oysters and baby greens salad (shared between 4.) I could have eaten the apps and been satisfied based on great portions. I will come back just for those three apps alone, they were fresh and delicious. Loved the granita on top of the oysters, very unique touch! For entrees my mother and I both had pappardelle which was a creamy sauce with scallops. The scallops were very tiny but cooked perfectly and flavors were incredible. Hubs had the rack of lamb which was cooked perfectly. Dad had the burger which was outstanding. My only disappointment was the wine selection. For a wine bar I would have expected more options, maybe I just didn't get the wine menu? I will say that the rosé I had was outstanding. Apparently it is new to their bar and offered on draft. Highly recommend (Cantine Povero, Vino Rosato, NV, Piedmont, Italy.) Ambiance: Beautiful. We sat on the outdoor patio which was nestled between two walls of brick with string lights. Patio furniture was incredibly comfortable. Service: Improved over time and our waitress was excellent. However, after being seated we had to wait a very long time even before getting water and being able to order our drinks. Unfortunately had to wave down hostess to track down our waitress since we'd been waiting so long. My father also asked for an actual menu (as he has a hard time reading on the phone) and had to remind them to bring it out. Once our server did come she recommended putting appetizers and entrees in at once as the kitchen was very backed up, but then our appetizers came before we got our drinks from the bar. I went out Saturday with friends to a movie (Ambler Theatre) and dinner for my birthday. The movie let out earlier than we estimated so we walked over to the restaurant to see if we could be seated earlier. It was cold outside and the restaurant was warm and inviting. The bar area was half full and the restaurant was starting to fill up. We were able to be seated 15 minutes prior to our original reservation. Our server came to the table and asked if we wanted any beverages to start. Two of us ordered cocktails (Sazerac and a Blood Orange Blossom). Both were a welcome start to a wonderful evening. The place was hopping with the usual din of a busy restaurant in the background. It was still easy to have a conversation without having to strain to hear or shout to be heard. Three of us started with the mushroom soup and ordered half orders of pasta dishes. The other ordered halibut that was one of the evening's specials. The food was very good evidenced by how silent the table went when we started eating in earnest. Portion size was good. Our server was attentive without being overwhelming. We paid the check and stuck around for maybe another 10 minutes planning our next steps for the evening without feeling pressured to leave. When we left the place was entirely full. Overall just a wonderful dining experience. This is a solid restaurant. I highly recommend coming here for good food, good service in a welcoming atmosphere. read more

Never have I been disappointed in a meal at Dettera. The menu has many options and also a good deal of specials. I have enjoyed a pizza with my daughter and also burgers with my husband but have also had a full course meal. One of a very few places that my daughter who lives out of the area now always want to go to for a meal. We started with an Artisan Cheese board that had a nice selection of cheeses and garnishes. We had the rack of lamb and herb roasted chicken breast. Both meals were prepared nicely and were served with vegetables. Every thing was cooked exactly as we had requested. The service was good and just love the ambiance of the restaurant. It was too hot to sit outside so we had a table on the second floor. This was a very cool place to go, food was over all very good, we had a issue with one of the entrees but they corrected it.

Wasn't bad but not my favorite. Noticed from a review they had soft shell crabs. My hubby has been on the hunt for them. So of course we had to stop in and try them out. The service was great despite being super busy. Our sharable plates came out fast and hot. The calamari was good, not a fan of the Brussel sprouts. Brussels were a little to burnt for me. I had the brazino dish and of course my husband had the soft shell. My dish was good, should've substituted my chick peas and my hubby was let down with the crabs. With recommendations from our server, we were not disappointed. We then moved on to share their amazing burger and cavatelli entree. The burger was a perfect medium with a sunny side up egg and frizzled onions. The cavatelli was in brown butter with sage, pumpkin seeds, butternut squash and spinach. It all worked. Chef Jeffrey Power is an innovative genius, which is probably why he and his staff were invited to cook at the prestigious James Beard house a few years ago. He's uber picky and selects/serves only high quality all-natural meats and the freshest seafood. He also uses sustainable ingredients that are locally grown. The farm-to-table dishes offer a perfect balance of delicate, yet sometimes surprising, flavors and textures - all carefully prepared to perfection. The staff is amazing and the service is second to none. The wine and liquor selection is one of the largest you'll find and the owner is an experienced wine connoesieur. The two story restaurant is cozy and charming- complete with fireplace, large windows, high ceilings and wood beams. I feel so honored and privileged to have been able to enjoy a multi-course meal here (in good company). I had made a reservation for Saturday, 11/2, at 8:30 p.m. I explained that this was going to be just drinks and dessert. The person I talked to said that was fine and they would make a note of it. 2 of my party had to drop out last minute. Yesterday around 3:30. I called again and apologized, but my reservation was now going to be 7 people and if it was too last minute, we will figure something else out. I was told it is okay. I thought great, the night is planned out. We were having dinner next door at Tannery Run and were running late, so I walked next door to check the reservation policy (most places are 5-15 minute grace period) and said we will be just a few minutes late. I explained what was happening to the host and was met with very rude and borderline hostile resistance. I was told immediately that he was canceling our reservation because we weren't eating dinner and needed to keep tables open for people who wanted to eat, but we could sit at the bar. There wasn't room for 7 to all sit together. I can totally understand the policy of tables are for dinner, but why take the reservation in the first place when I was upfront with my plans? Why are the employees not on the same page? Plus, the restaurant tables were empty. I recommend KC's Alley instead of this place. KC's was amazing. Did Dettera not want money? I don't understand why I was met with such hostility and rudeness when I tried to do the right thing through this whole process. read more

Great Happy Hour! Amazing drink selection and apps. Great quality for the price. We go there a lot for HH then catch a movie at Ambler Theater across the street. Wish they would change the hours to 4:30-6:30 for their HH though. Movies are usually at 7 and hanging there for an hr before film starts is a bit of a wait. read more

Dettera had live music and was pretty busy for a Saturday night. Would recommend reservations. We had an early dinner reservation in hopes to have a nice dinner before the rush and catch the train back. The service was lacking. The server forgot to put in our appetizer, never refilled our waters and had to be reminded multiple times for different things we asked for. Eventually the server had to be waved down to get out checks, which was unfortunate. It's possible the server got too busy. As far as dinner, when we finally got the bread (halfway through our entrees), we discovered how great they were. Warmed and had an awesome crust. We had two pasta dishes, the rainbow trout, and the bone in grilled pork chop. The trout and pork chop were done to perfection. They were both perfectly seasoned. I will say the sides that came along with the dishes were uneventful and not done well. The homemade bucatini was to die for! we loved the sauce and hated the meatballs. Went here for my wife's birthday, and was seated in the outdoor area. It is secluded and beautiful with an amazing view. The appetizers were top notch, with some of the greatest oysters around covered with an incredible line granita on top. The Brussel spouts were covered in a crazy good Kung pow like sauce. We both had a couple of cocktails that were tasty. Our main courses were the pork tenderloin and bucatini with scallops. Sooo good. Great service as well. Our server was pleasant and made sure we had a memorable meal. Not to mention the tiramisu and creme brûlée were the perfect ending to a top notch experience. The manager was rude right from the 1st 5 minutes in the door - when my friend asked if we could sit downstairs instead of upstairs due to several tables with very large parties - yelling "Surprise" etc. and just very loud. That's why restaurants have separate rooms for events. We waited 45 minutes for salad and appetizers. Then another 50 minutes for entrees. When I asked the waitress for info on when the entrees would be coming, she gave a pat answer "they're working on it. " She never apologized throughout the meal about the delays. My friend asked for a soda refill and was charged a 2nd time for it - okay, that's not horrible. But my $35.00 striped bass meal was supposed to come with roasted carrots, Brussel sprouts and in place of potatoes - broccoli rabe. It came with about 1 ounce portion of the vegetables - IN TOTAL. No exaggeration, I thought I was imagining it. When I asked for more vegetables, it was denied. "that's the portion that comes with the meal." - my $35.00 minimal piece of fish was basically my meal. Told Dettera we were celebrating a big birthday when I made the reservation, and they seemed to suggest they'd help the birthday girl feel special! The place had a great look, but our greeter was cold and made no mention of the birthday celebration. Service was ok, she was stressed. The appetizers were solid, but our dinners were bad and way over-priced for the little we got. Mid-way through our meal, it got weird. Table next to us brought their dog, and it wouldn't stop barking. Server did nothing about it. Happy Birthday was never mentioned... and the dog ruined a meal that was going sideways at best. My friends and I ordered the hand cut papperdelle with sautéed rock shrimp and it was really good!!! I loved it! We also got the hand made ricotta cavatelli with sweet corn, summer truffle and goats cheese and it was our favorite dish that night!! It was FANTASTIC! I think the corn really made it soo delicious! Dettera is a new Ambler fav! Our first time here. I made a last minute 7:30 rez on Open Table for 2. Was seated promptly by friendly host. Our server was very friendly and got our drinks right away. They have a fabulous wine menu but I was in the mood for a ketel dirty martini (bonus bleu cheese olives) and hub had a Ballast Point ipa. The bread was brought out right away. Two options with oil..both great. Salad and soup followed. Endive bleu cheese salad with walnuts was huge and delish...enough for 2 people. The pumpkin soup had all these yummy bits in the bottom of bowl and server hand poured soup on top at table side . The pumpkin soup was sooo good! I had the scallop app for entree...grateful I did due to huge salad. It was so flavorful and very pretty that I did not want to mess it up. Hub had the pork chop cooked perfectly with yummy veggies and mash. Also got the fries as a side because they come with 3 dipping sauces...enough said. Deterra is a cute little restaurant in the heart of Ambler. I used to come here often prior to covid to get a drink at the bar before dinner. Most recently I came with a friend for some drinks and apps. They have a cute little outdoor patio in the back - I made a reservation for outdoors but the hostess was less than *friendly* and told us it was fully booked w/ reservations (we also had a reservation?) - ultimately they accommodated us back there though. Everything else was great though - lots of good food, wine, & drinks. Our server was nice and attentive. Overall a good experience! read more

I m throwing in the towel on Deterra. Having dined there a number of times over the past two years imve slowly lost my fondness for this restaurant. Their service has always been ok at best, but I often faulted the kitchen for the slow processing of food. My latest visit resulted in leaving before ordering. Their menu has shrunk. I should say their main menu because I received 3 menus to order from, Main, cheese and wine (with there being a mysterious 4th menu for pizza). It's just not worth the time. read more
