I've experienced the larger Detwiler's in the area and walked right out due to it being too insane for me. So I cringed when my friend wanted to go to this location given its smaller. But I absolutely LOVED it! This one was not as insane as the larger location. The store is much smaller but organized enough to accommodate. The produce is fresh and even smells wonderful! The highlight of my trip was the Pineapple coring and slicing machine!!! Omgosh!!! I should've taken pictures and video. But they have fresh pineapple and right next to the bin is a machine where you put the bowl in the specified area, pick a pineapple and place in the machine, close the door and press the button and BOOM, you have freshly sliced pineapple. And it's only $2.99!! I had to do this twice it was so stinkin cool!! They have fresh meat section as well as the bakery and deli. Don't leave without some ice cream! It's Yoders branded ice cream. Usually, my Detwiler's experience is quite nice. Yesterday, I walked up to the deli to order a sub, where a very unhappy woman was there to take my order. Upon completion of my sandwich she asked: "are there any other sandwich you need today." I replied: "Yes." The nasty woman then muttered under her breath, less than 2 feet away from me, "These fucking mother-fuckers" while shaking her head. I am not sure what happened on the bus ride to work that morning, but it must have been something bad enough to treat the customers like this. The woman was short, blonde, and likely in her late 50s. I was simply asking her to do her job, and she decided to treat me poorly. Everyone else in the establishment treated me with grace and kindness. Maybe they need to share a bit with the deli woman. Detwilers is a great grocery store, with awesome deals - and a not so awesome deli woman. Thanks! read more

Great local market in Sarasota. We came upon it as we were making our way back to I-75 and decided to stop. They have a large selection of fruits and vegetables of all sorts, including some exotic things you won't find in most main stream stores. Went to the Palmer location for a few things and a AÇAÍ bowl. Employee helped the lady in front of me, made her a bowl and checked her out with multiple items, touched the computer keyboard and all items with gloves on then turned to me to help me, continued to make my AÇAÍ bowl with the same gloves she touched all other previous customers stuff with. Very unsanitary. I should not have to ask an employee to change their gloves after touching surfaces that could be contaminated with who knows what before handling food. read more

Still my go to market for veggies, seafood, bakery and dairy etc. Staff are super helpful. Clark store is my favorite/ super clean. Please people- it's up to you to pick a ripe pineapple for the machine! It's not going to reject one on your behalf because it's not quite ready to be eaten. J read more

**Update. 1 year later- now with Covid in full swing, the size of this location makes it impossible to avoid being right on top of others. Therefore, it's not a safe environment if they aren't going to enforce masks. About a quarter of the people in there don't wear and I was told officially by 2 store employees they are NOT enforcing masks. So, bye bye for me Detwilers.... Original review: I like Detwiler's a lot and they have some of the best meat and seafood selections around. This location is a mad house though! Way too small and cramped. Parking is difficult, although they did just pave the lot finally. Inside is too tight and there just isn't anywhere to stand. They have 3 registers and the lines are typically long. Another item that I wish they would address is better separation of the cooked and raw seafood at the seafood counter. I have found shellfish mixed together by accident several times and cross contamination. They are stored in the case too close together and the divider is too small. I've mentioned it but it doesn't seem to be a priority. read more

This review is for the Venice store only. I can't see the appeal for this store. The Sarasota store on Clark Rd. is great, but the Venice store needs a lot to be desired. It looks like a dirty, dingy store with very narrow isles that are poorly lit. The parking lot which is mostly gravel is atrocious. The parking spaces are very narrow. We go to to Detweilers often however we stopped buying their milk as it spoiled before the expiration date. We had this happen twice in a row so we stopped purchasing it. Well this last week I went ahead and purchased a gallon two Days ago it spoiled which would have been June 18th, expiration June 23rd. Their pineapple machine is great it cuts and slices pineapples for you but I can not tell a good one from a bad so when I got it home I could not cut it because it was not ripe yet. Excellent Big Olaf ice cream In addition to selling produce, fresh seafood, deli meat and Amish items, Detwiler's also offers ice cream. There is a spot just inside the north door where they have several flavors available. While my wife did some shopping I got a scoop of Kailua Krunch. The scoop wasn't that large but at a total cost of only $1.38 it would be hard to beat that price. They have picnic tables and chairs just outside where you can relax and enjoy. The ice cream had a good Kailua flavor, bits of chocolate, and the crunch came from little round caramel flavored crunchy things. My ice cream scooper was sweet. read more

Disgusting store would not eat many items I saw there, raw chicken stacked unpacked with juice spilling over the trays, many items not marked with prices. I've been to much better grocery stores. plus: + they do have some Local fruit and veggies negative: - - - - - and this is a big Negative, I brought home a loaf of their bread and pulled out a couple slices for a sandwich, then notice a hair, a baked in hair :( - - - - way too crowded, and people stop to chat in the already crowded aisles and otherwise have no sense that anyone else is in the store besides them - cart stopped blocking people from getting around and the customers don't even attempt to make room. - - - none of the meat is humanely raised - happy farm pics, but the animals are factory raised and processed - - may only be a negative for me, but I don't like religion overtly pushed on a people - if you want a secular clientele don't play religious music Not again for me - too many other better options in town read more

I've been back twice to the "Baby Detwilers" as my family has fondly called it for years. I am a permanant resident of Sarasota and grew up here. I'm not strager to Detwilers. Today, I tried the Neighborhood deli as I have countless times in the past. It won't happen again. I ordered 3 sandwiches: a Cuban, a lamb gyro and a Reuben. All three failed the test miserably. The bread on the Reuben slid completely off of the meat when I unwrapped it. Taste was fine, but the sandwich was a total mess. There was no way to reassemble a sandwich that has dressing, sauerkraut and corned beef once it's fallen off the bread. They cut the lamb gyro in half after they wrapped it. When I got it home and opened it up, everything fell all over the place and it was a royal mess. The only way to eat it was as an open-faced sandwich, which is not what I wanted. And finally the Cuban. I'm not sure where the meat went, but my sandwich literally had two slices of meat. I couldn't tell which piece was pork and which was ham. The meat was sliced razor thin and the mustard completely over-powered the whole sandwich. It was basically a pressed piece of bread with a ton of mustard, cheese and a few pickles--a nearly meat-less Cuban. Not worth the calories and not satisfying at all. I couldn't be more disappointed. Oh, and the smoke was overwhelming in the store. When I left my shirt smelled like smoke and I had to change. The smoke was visible in the store and it affected my eyes and nose. Do they not have an exhaust fan somewhere? There was a smoky haze from one end of the store to the other. I will drive an extra fifteen minutes and shop at the Detwilers on Clark where the staff is wonderful, they know how to make a sandwich, I can breathe without coughing and I don't have to bring a change of clothing. I will not be back to this location again. Awful experience. Cashier was super-nice...that was the saving grace, but even she complained about the smoke. read more

When I'm in town this is almost the first place I go to. I plan my meals from their produce and fish counter. I love this place it's my favorite farm market And I travel a lot The bread is baked there. The deli counter is well staffed and fast ( they have you sample the meat and cheese you are buying) I love the corn chips they sell They make great sandwiches to order The dairy counter is well stocked. The produce, the cheese and sausage section, seafood, etc etc etc. Everything is the best! Went because everyone seems to rave about it and indeed, they should. You walk in and question yourself but the selection is terrific and the baked goods are outstanding. I got fresh fruit and muffins that beat just about anything elsewhere at great prices. Both the morning glory and blueberry muffins were as fresh as if they just came out of the oven, and the price was very reasonable. I love the fruits and vegetables, and have shopped there for years. Unfortunately they do not require masks and in a store as small as Palmer there is just no way to get away from the germ spewers. I love love love Detweilers but this one is a little insane. Still, they have some very nice produce, very good seafood and some goodies. The other two stores are much nicer, larger and more pleasant. This one is tough to navigate. It's like those mazes with lots of dead ends. Too small and tightly packed. This review is for the store on Clark Road. I just moved to Sarasota two weeks ago. Friends recommended Detwiler's Farm Market. I went there this afternoon after work and left in about 15 minutes. They do have a great selection of produce. However, no one is cleaning the carts and you have to do it yourself using the wipes provided. OK I did that. What really caused me to leave was encountering A LOT of people not wearing masks, who come right up behind you as well. So I returned my cart and went to Publix where masks are required and announcements are made that customers must wear them. And this is just a personal irritation for me, but I am not a fan of "Jesus music" being played in a store. So bye Detwiler's and hello Publix. read more
