LOVE this place. They make such evident strides to build a community in venice with their constant events. Whether it's a motorcycle show or a craft artisan fair, they have something (extremely cool) for everyone. Only one outlet for those people who make this their home office. I purchased some items online from this company. The website is difficult to use and quite buggy. Upon receiving the items I discovered that one was the wrong colour and another item was incorrect. The problem occurs when trying to track down who wants to take responsibility for this. Calling the Venice shop seems to be more of an annoyance for the staff. As in "well its not our fault" and then " we can give you the online representative's number"... two days later I still havn't heard anything from the online representative after leaving several detailed messages. So yeah. The store is perhaps a little too cool for school. Unhelpful, seemingly irritated with me and all I want is to get what I paid for.. I don't think I am being unreasonable. read more

I'm from Europe. My second place on my trip to visit was Deus, after meet Salinas Boys - Cole Foster (btw. cool guy). But expectations about Deus were too high, Cafe service - bad I can say, the guy just ingnore my presence. Excellent service :) ... Store Staff little bit better, trying to show some interest, at least I could make some shots of Store. In general very dissapointed :( Yes, desing and concept is cool, that's all... 2 stars for Store Staff and interior design. Since my return to America after a stint in Kiwi-a-go-go land (New Zealand) I have been DYING to find coffee that comes CLOSE to the delicious macchiatos, flat whites and long blacks of New Zealand. While I admit to being a Starbucks frequenter (hey--they're quick and easy and can't mess up an iced coffee), I have been yearning for one of those small, simple, quick and easy cafes of New Zealand. One where I can take my laptop with my books and study or where I can zip through a paper without being disturbed by loud, obnoxious groups, moms/nannies with babies running around screaming or that occasional creepy frequenter that ogles you and goes out of his way to greet you every time he sees you (talking to you, fro dude with a pipe in P.P Starbucks). Lo and behold- Deus Ex Machina. I was familiar with the motorcycle manufacturer, but had no idea they had these little cafes. My boyfriend's dad came across it one day and said the coffee was amazing. I just so happen to live around the corner so I sauntered over one morning before work and, to my delight, they had everything the cafes I used to spend countless in while hacking away at 30 page papers. Not only did they have the coffees but they had the muesli with fresh fruit and yogurt, the delicious scones and fresh biscuits....and marmite (though, I never liked that stuff). Now, all they need is some L&P and those little crusty marshmallows I was so in love with! Not only is the coffee worth it (it is pricey, but soooo delicious. It's the coffee that's delicious on it's own--spent $25 on a bag for our home and it's never disappointed) but the atmosphere is spot on. Really chill people, dependable workers that are super nice but not fake AND a cool sense of community. They throw BBQs all of the time, invite lots of people to hang out and they have even let us borrow tools if/when our car battery died in the parking lot or our cruisers needed a seat adjustment. I adore this place. I will always come back and hope they continue the good work. To the patrons--keep being awesome. What happened: First time I found the place, I loved the aesthetic and coffee, so I came back for my lunch break since I saw they also had food. Calling in advance, since my break is very short, they told me they cut their menu and only had breakfast burritos but were out of that too and only had sweet pastries. I still went content on just getting coffee and finding food elsewhere, but at the register saw that they still sold bagel sandwiches. Strike 1 - Wishing I knew so I could order ahead like planned. After ordering, my bagel wasn't prepared until after 3-5 other customers orders and took 13 minutes. Strike 2 - I didn't have much time left at this point. Once I got the bagel, the egg was cold and badly prepared with just one side only bread and cheese. Strike 3 - this cost around $9 and was worse than Starbucks pre-made sandwiches. The barista was kind and apologized but it was a waste of time and money. Cold brew was good though. read more

Look! It's a motorcycle shop! No, it's a cafe! No, it's a bookstore! It's a clothing store! An art gallery!! Actually, there's nothing quite like this place anywhere in California. Mekagojira put his finger on it: It's a lifestyle store for the passionate motorhead. And his family and friends who roll their eyes at the motorhead lifestyle. On a trip to Southern California I passed by with my young son and was drawn inside by a fully-restored BMW R60/2 prominently placed in the diagonal window at Lincoln Ave. My son rolled his eyes. "Dad! Another motorcycle store?" We walked in through the back and he was immediately drawn to the cafe, stylishly done with books, flowers and great architecture. A croissant, a cup of hot chocolate and a browse through the cool magazines at the large common table and he was sold. I had a great time admiring the custom motorcycles and we bought an elegant Rodia Bloc notepad and a classic Blackwing pencil to draw with. If we'd been in the mood, we could have walked out with new outfits as well! If you're in the area, check it out. You'll probably like it. Even if you're not a motorhead. I've been riding motorcycles since 1971 and have seen various trends and biker spots come and go. Deus appeals to the cafe racer crowd and is a guaranteed hipster magnet. It's a very cool combination of excellent static motorcycle displays in their shop, an actual motorcycle shop where you can have your bike serviced, some clothing and accessories, an about-average espresso bar, grille/BBQ and beer tent, a contemporary barber and other cool attractions. The only thing missing is a tattoo artist. I got a chance to visit here on Sunday and loved the store, concept, goods and people. The staff were all extremely friendly, especially the lady at the coffee bar. Very helpful... It is however far from perfect... Prices are high. How high? Let's just say you should bring two or three credit cards instead of one if you plan on buying shirts, sweaters, jackets, glasses or gear here. The food was about average, the beer was trendy and the vibe was definitely hipster. If you're the kind of guy who loves to pretend you're a lumberjack albeit with skinny jeans, you'll fit right in... Also the location, while easy to find is also a royal pain to get in and out of. What a cute little coffee spot! You would never know it's back there, but it's well worth a visit. The coffee is always strong and delicious, and they have a different fresh pastry every time I'm in there. The space is also very nice, with a nice long table inside and another one outside, as well as some little tables to the side that are great for a small meeting or catching up with friends. Stopped here after having lunch at the local gourmet German sausage and beer place (Wurst something) and it is just a delightful bit of cultural fun. It seems to have an Australian feel and is a mix of an informal coffee shop, with well made coffee drinks, and pastries, and a retail store for dirt bikes and riding clothes related to that activity. As others have noted the outside seating is well done and is toward the back so away from the direct traffic on Lincoln Blvd. As others have noted, a delightful hipster feel but not uninviting to those less hip of us in the larger population. I think that may be the Australian cultural influence creating a more "live and let live" vibe but whatever it is, if I lived in the area or a nice place to stop in general and enjoy a coffee drink or an herbal tea while soaking up a little cool local vibe before heading on to one's next destination. ;-) read more

Fantastic coffee is to be enjoyed here (Handsome Coffee Roasters), which is the reason I have stopped by on my bike rides. I am a cappuccino or ristretto gal so I can claim no expert opinion on what some customers praise as the Aussie, "flat-white." The interior-exterior, flagship-design of reclaimed wood and exposed brick, the long, sturdy tables and use of concrete, and the open-air experience of the patio, flowing via open (rolled garage-door) wall to the interior on balmy days lends a classy-casual, neighborhood-y feeling (without being too precious or elitist). The convenience of their own (albeit small) parking lot is worth a mention for you drivers. The Bicycle rack beside the patio is of mention, as so many places lack a bike rack. Providing your parking-fortune is good, you can park your car/bike within gazing distance, sit outside with your paper/laptop (providing you have extended battery; little to no plugs avail), and score some gander at the locals and custom-built-motorbike aficionados. read more

Horrifying. If the dept of public health was there during my visit they would be shut down. Do we start with the woman playing with her belly ring with the same gloves on that she was touching the Panini's with? Do we start with the man behind the counter taking down his mask to yell across the restaurant? Do we start with a customer coming in and then getting behind the bar to make her own coffee putting her unwashed hands into the ice? I had to wait 20 minutes for a coffee with only two people in line in front of me. It saddens me to write this review since I have been frequent customer to the shop for the last four years. But with a flagrant disregard for a customer safety and health I must say goodbye. I felt so unsafe after that experience I could not even drink my coffee. read more

Equal parts motorcycle shop, fancy cafe, and biker fashion boutique. I don't know anything about bikes, but it really seems like all three missions are equally prioritized here. The coffee will do right by any coffee snob, and the menu is the kind that combines exotic fruit compotes with cheeses you rarely think about, and they do that fancy bread with the crust that's so sharp it'll shred your mouth. Sometimes they're barbecuing lamb in the parking lot. Also they just had a bin sale on their own clothing label, Deus, that looked like some Rodeo Drive men's wear but ruggedized for biker use. I'm told there are often people with laptops and flip flops discussing business plans, trade deals, and probably trips to Tahoe, etc. Utterly perplexing blend of purposes, but the cafe is awesome. I ordered the RILEY RIPSTOP PANT - BLACK in XS and it is one of the worst pairs of pants I've ever ordered. The material feels like cheap paper that you'd find with H&M pants and it attracts so much lint. I don't know how this originally retailed for $110, it's a complete scam. The sizing was also off. The XS said it was 28-29 with a tapered fit, but the length on these is more align with 31 or 32 in a slim fit. I know it's wise to try on pants, but I don't know how you misjudge your sizing by that much. Overall, very disappointed with my purchase, pants are trash. read more

This place has a very cool vibe. Maybe I'd shop here if I were a millionaire. It's funny how it's a motorcycle/lifestyle shop AND a coffee shop! Only in L.A. I do love how the patio blends right in with the coffee counter. This is definitely an avante-garde kinda place. My problem is that these places get really bougie. Okay, a cup of drip coffee is $2.50. 3/4 a pound of coffee is $19 ... +tax! I guess I'm just not used to the "boutique" lifestyle. I loved a scarf they had there. It was $80! Okay, 20% off for Black Friday, but really. The barista was really friendly, but it was kind of weird how they had no sugar, no half 'n half and no napkins at the "condiment bar" ... it's kind of a condiment bar. Instead, it's agave in a bottle and organic whole milk in a bottle. And the barista let me reach over into his counter for napkins. Oh, Lord. I'm all for new concepts, but this is a little silly. Near perfect shop/cafe/hang out! Although the coffee etc is a little over priced (I mean only maybe $1!!) everything else about this store is perfect, the lay out is great, you can sit in relative peace in the seating area cleverly set back from the road, sheltered from the sun in parts, this place houses some amazing real top quality merchandise. A bikers heaven. Couldn't resist a leather jacket they'd just got in. Give this place a try, it's not a cheap coffee but what it lacks in Starbucks prices it makes up for with character. The staff are helpful and friendly, even gave me a tour of the workshop without me asking. Plenty of amazing bikes and surfboards to look at in store and always something interesting parking out back. Looking forward to visiting this Sunday for their 'Sunday Mass' event, each 3rd Sunday of the month a ride out and gathering at the shop.
