Just came here for the first time. The owner Nick has a lovely spirit. You feel his warmth, kindness and care, and that's probably what makes this spot so popular with locals. They offer organic coffee and bevvies here along with a selection of pastries. Wednesdays are particularly special in that they offer their homemade cinnamon rolls on the menu. I got a cardamom latte. It was the right amount of sweetness thanks to their in house simple syrup. This was served at the perfect temperature. This normally comes with a double shot of espresso but I got mine with a single and they were able to accommodate without any problems. While I didn't taste the cardamom as much as I thought I would, this was a delicious latte and worth ordering. If you can't find street parking on Main, no worries. I parked up the hill on 3rd and Marine. If you don't mind walking up and down a hill for a bit, consider parking here to avoid some of the more stressful parking on Main. My friend and I went to magical mystical Gnarwhal Coffee this morning after driving by it a bunch of times. There is always a line and it's such a cute neighborhood coffee shop. They do tons of cool sounding events there too! I had the plain black Cold Brew and goodness those are some rich and tasty beans being used. This coffee was simple but had layers and I love the taste. I tried my friend's Baja Brew which is also a cold brew but incorporates horchata vibes into it. Lovedddd it almost as much as I love gnarwhals, unicorns and chupacabras. Also tried their flaky and delicious chocolate croissant - their pastry display was looking good. Their coffee is organic and they use good sources for what they have in shop. This is always appreciated but culture on the coast is hyper aware of this and I appreciate that as a consumer. This is such a Santa Monica edge of Venice coffee shop with straight surfer vibes throughout. It fits the neighborhood and I loved the aesthetics. Got one of the cinnamon buns and it was fine, nothing special and - if I'm honest - felt more like a home-baked pillsbury bun more than something from a bakery. Ordered a cold brew as well and it was also just OK, with a sort of dusty taste (like when coffee grounds are in the cup - they weren't but that was the flavor) $14 was the total for the drink and bun - which is very pricey. Came for an event where they were having djs perform for the late morning to lunch hours. The place was super hyped and it really made the place such a fun place to be. I'm sure it's not always this way and you can usually grab a table and get some work done. I got the cardamom latte and it was spicy from the cardamom but also felt very sweet. Nothing special about the coffee here and there are no electricity outlets available for charging your laptop or phone. Wifi also times out every 1 hr. Pretty clear they don't want people hear doing work, but when I'm on the road trying to work, I come to coffee shops to pay $8 for coffee specifically for the ability to camp out for a few hours. Had the cinnamon bun and that was just average to me as well. Service was good and it is very clean, but those are somewhat basic expectations. read more

Finding a small coffee shop in LA that has a great vibe for studying, casual hang outs, and people watching all in one is really hard to do, but I'll tell you not for Gnarwhal studying - they have multiple seating options with tables, both high and low as well as indoor and outdoor. Their complementary wifi makes it a breeze to get your daily tasks done. casual hang outs: quick service with lots of indoor and outdoor seating and a cheerful vibe that makes it easy to meet up with friends and just hand out People watching: large windows and an open layout that makes it easy to observe the other patrons that walk in and even the passerbys on main street if youre like me and need little distractions from time to time to help keep you focused on your work. The service is great with friendly and knowledgable staff. I love trying the unique thing at every place and they frequently change theirs up so things dont get boring. The playlist is fantastic, I rarely can stay in a coffee shop all day without putting in my own headphones, but I did not have to even consider it once at Gnarwhal. There is plenty of street parking on the main street and in the surrounding neighborhood. One negative is that while they are dog friendly, they do not allow pets to drink/eat indoor. While this is completely understandable, it makes it hard to spend the day studying with my service animal who loves to snack so he doesnt get bored. The other negative is in regards to accessibility, while they have awide entrance that would accomodate someone with an assisted mobility device, the layout of the interior would make it exceedingly challenging to navigate the device indoor, so someone in a wheelchair could not easily order and obtain their drink without relying on the help of another, thus limiting their ability to be independent. read more

Gnarwhal is the dream, local, coffee shop. The interior is very surf, beach, vibe. All the baristas are extremely nice and always have a smile on their face. The owners, are the absolute best. (They are actually opening a restaurant in the next month or so in the Venice area called Companion!) I think I've tried everything on their menu but my favorites are the Cardamom Latte and the 50/50 Matcha (which is seasonal at the moment). Every Monday, they have Cinna-Mondays which one of the baristas makes homemade cinnamon rolls which sell out extremely quickly. They have amazing Banana-chocolate bread. Parking is metered, street parking. They have Wifi but they have limited seating (usually lucky to find a spot outside). And they have restrooms! Definitely recommend getting there early as they are so popular that the have a line leading outside :) read more
